• "Erse" Rosato Etna DOC 2020

      “Erse” Rosato Etna DOC 2020

Etna Rosato Erse offers an authentic expression of the Nerello Mascalese grape (with a 20% share of Nerello Cappuccio). Strong raspberry red with a beautiful bouquet of wild berries and fresh fruit aromas such as watermelon. The volcanic terroir gives the wine concentration and character. SUPERIORE.DE

"A deep-set, tufo-charged nose that lets through just hints of red berries and cherries. Then, on the palate, it's the turn of the fruit, which is highlighted by fresh acidity. The combination of fruit and mineral provides an enduring finish. Super rosé." James Suckling

Sweet cherries, flowers, spices and a hint of mint on the nose. Firm yet harmonious tannin in the lively, very intense flavour, which never feels heavy but elegant until the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Subtle aromas suggesting scorched earth, hazelnut and hay form the nose along with a whiff of eucalyptus. The lithe, bone-dry palate offers mineral-driven restraint, showing flinty mineral, toasted almond, pomegranate and a hint of citrus." Wine Enthusiast

    • "Laeneo" Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia DOC 2018

“Laeneo” Nerello Cappuccio Sicilia DOC 2018

It is very rare and highly commendable that a pure Nerello Cappuccio comes into the bottle here, whereas the Nerello Mascalese on the Etna is usually the red top dog. Bright garnet red, youthfully fresh wine with a bouquet of strawberry and citrus fruit, in addition stone-mineral tones, flowers and spices. In the taste of subtle elegance with a pleasant fresh breeze. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Erse Contrada Moscamento 1911" Rosso Etna DOC 2017

“Erse Contrada Moscamento 1911” Rosso Etna DOC 2017

Rovittello, like Passiposciaro and Pietramarina, lies on the north and northeast sides of the Etna volcano. In 1911, another eruption took place, which resulted in, among other things, the area from which Fessina's red of the same name comes being flooded by lava rock, thus creating the basalt- and sand-rich terroir on which bush vines up to 100 years old grow today. The microclimate of this particular site, in the shape of an amphitheatre, ensures that the Nerello grapes ripen slowly and completely, giving the wines a unique identity, elegance and depth.

Bright, luminous ruby red. Animating bouquet of violet blossoms, pink pepper and small red forest berries. On the palate, spicy and velvety, the harmony between acidity and fruit extract combined with round, elegant tannins create a wine of aristocratic grace and finesse that will increase in depth and complexity in the coming years. Just 3,000 bottles of it will reach selected specialist retailers and top restaurants. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, brightening ruby garnet. Very clear and appealing nose of raspberries and dark cherries, some candyfloss. Juicy and with lots of tension on the palate, unfolds with present, grippy tannin, firm pressure on the final, still seems very young." Falstaff

"A tight, almost reductive yet exotic nose of spiced mulberries and cranberries, following through to a medium palate with firm tannins. The spicy fruit lingers, but overall harmony will take a while." James Suckling

    • "A' Puddara" Bianco Etna DOC 2018

“A' Puddara” Bianco Etna DOC 2018

A' Puddara, a single-varietal Carricante, radiates pure energy and power. Lemon, white flowers and mineral aromas on the nose, breathtaking elegance and class on the palate. The almost energetic, slightly salty and flowing final makes this wine simply irresistible. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, powerful greenish yellow. Exciting nose with notes of peach and flint, some fresh, crisp apple. Crisp and defining acidity on the palate, lots of grip, salty, lingers long." Falstaff

"The 2018 Etna Bianco A'Puddara lifts up with a dazzling display of dusty dried flowers, lemon confit, hints of gingery spice and almond. It's silky-textured and rich, with a sweet display of ripe apples and melon balanced by a twang of lime and kiwi toward the close. Tension remains high as the A'Puddara tapers off with cheek-puckering freshness and a flourish of salty minerality. A bit of cellaring is recommended to allow this Carricante to blossom aromatically. The A'Puddara refines on the lees in neutral 3,500-liter French oak barrels for eight months. I love the sweet and sour contrasts here, and it is packed full of so much character." Vinous

“Il Musmeci” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2015

Lively ruby with light reflections. On the nose, aromas of violets, red berries, rhubarb, black cherries and a subtle hint of nutmeg. Exceptionally compact on the palate, with impressive acidity, fine fruit sweetness and perfectly formed tannin. Great freshness and energy, a salty vein in the long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Etna Rosso Il Musmeci Riserva pulls you close with its sweetly scented bouquet of ripe strawberries and plum, dried flowers and a dusting of cinnamon and clove. It's silky and fleshy in feel, contrasted by a spicy display of tart wild berries and minerals, all balanced by zesty acids. Violet florals linger over a coating of dusty tannin as this tapers off structured yet persistent. The best is still to come for this incredibly pretty and seductive Nerello Mascalese." Vinous

    • "Il Musmeci Contrada Caselle" Bianco Etna DOC 2017

“Il Musmeci Contrada Caselle” Bianco Etna DOC 2017

White wines from Etna are always special and in a league of their own due to the usually very old vines, the extreme altitude and the usually minimal yield per hectare. When the origin of the Carricante grapes is the small parcel (Contrada) Caselle with mostly 100-year-old rootless bush vines (Alberelli), even connoisseurs can be excited. The soil, formed by centuries of volcanic activity, has numerous layers of minerals and salts, pumice, lapilli, fine and light ash. This distinctly rare terroir is particularly fertile and produces late-ripening, healthy, fresh and very aromatic grapes, despite the usually great thermal excesses during the summer season. Silvia Maestrelli produces just 650 bottles of this exceptional wine in good years, so you can imagine that we are fortunate to be able to offer a few cases of this rare vintage.

Il Musmeci Contrada Caselle delights on the nose with fresh citrus notes, refined by hints of candied fruit and delicate notes of smoke and toast. On the palate, it refreshes with a dense and vertical acidity structure. In the extremely complex taste, we find the characteristic minerality and freshness and a hint of almonds and iodine in addition to a racy sugar-acid interplay. Tip: Be sure to aerate before drinking and ideally serve in Burgundy glasses! SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Etna Bianco Contrada Caselle Il Musmeci is stunning yet refined, wafting up with a vivid display of yellow flowers, ginger spice, mulled apple, hints of lemon and crushed stone. It's silky and pliant in feel, washing across the palate with glycerol weight that is perfectly offset by tart orchard fruits and salty mineral tones. Residual acids and sour citrus add tension, balancing its youthful density. A year or two of cellaring is recommended for this gorgeous Carricante." Vinous

    About the winemakersTenuta di FessinaSicily
    Tenuta di Fessina

The fact that it is possible to produce truly expressive wines from ancient, neglected vines in a very short time has been impressively demonstrated by the winegrowing consultant Federico Curtaz, the Chianti winemaker Silvia Maestrelli and her husband Roberto Silva. In their Tenuta di Fessina on the Etna, originally an 18th century mill with seven hectares of vineyards, the trio has contributed a great deal to the valorisation of Sicilian wines and vine culture on Europe's most powerful volcano.

To this day, the passionate team has invested a great deal and almost doubled the area under vines, some of which are more than one hundred years old. The grapes of the experienced and already before the foundation of the company very successful winegrower trio grow on black soils at the edge of the Etna and produce in small editions not only strong character and elegant reds, but are also responsible for great white wines.

The wines of Tenuta di Fessina were born out of a love for Etna and are produced in three widely separated production sites. The main site on the northern slope of the volcano lies just outside Rovittello in the municipality of Castiglione di Sicilia and consists mainly of a vineyard planted with Nerello Mascalese and around 80 years old. A vineyard planted exclusively with the native Carricante variety and reaching a height of 900 metres is located on the south-western slope of Santa Maria di Locodia. Here grows Etna Bianco A, which is highly rated every year.' Puddara. The plots located on the eastern slope of Milo are also very suitable for the cultivation of Carricante. Other estates of the Sicilian wine company are located in Segesta and Noto in the provinces of Trapani and Syracuse. In the latter location, the owners of the estate have created a magnificent vineyard of almost two hectares with Nero d'Avola sticks, which are more than half a century old.

Federico Curtaz - who worked for the wine producer Angelo Gaja in Piedmont for 20 years, first as an agronomist and later as an oenological consultant - was brought on board in 2007, the year the company was founded, as an experienced expert for responsible work in the cellar. In the meantime, the still young Tenuta di Fessina has increasingly come into the public eye.

So Silvia Maestrelli was interviewed by the daily newspaper "Corriere della Sera" when "Innovative wine producer in Italy 2016" because, as the explanatory memorandum states, they are "the colours of the sky above Etna" I've transferred to their wines. We do not have to have prophetic gifts of vision to predict that the trio of winegrowers from the Mediterranean island will continue to provide one or two surprises in the future. SUPERIORE.DE

"In this Sicilian adventure, Federico Curtaz has been implementing his stylistic idea since the first harvest that Fessina wines must bring out the typical aromas of the vine and the unique volcanic terroir in the best possible way, without sacrificing finesse in the least."Gambero Rosso
