“Matè" Vino Rosso 2025
Brachetto is almost exclusively sweet in Piedmont – as Brachetto d'Acqui, sparkling, aromatic, as a dessert or aperitif wine. Andrea Sottimano shows that this grape variety can become something completely different when fermented dry on a small vineyard near Treiso: Matè – 1.1 hectares, vines over 40 years old on limestone and clay, one of those quiet individual vineyards in the Langhe that are almost unknown but have a lot to say. 20 days of maceration with natural yeasts, malolactic fermentation, 8 months in steel. No fining, no filtration.

“Bric del Salto” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2024
Three Dolcetto parcels in Neive and one wine: Cottà, Basarin and San Cristoforo consist of calcareous marl soils with sandy veins. The grapes are harvested selectively by hand; fermentation takes place spontaneously in stainless steel with a maceration period of around three weeks in order to gain flavour, grip and depth. The wine then rests exclusively in the tank on the fine lees until early bottling – without the use of wood, focussing entirely on precision and drinking flow.

Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2023
What Andrea Sottimano declares here as Langhe Nebbiolo is in fact a Barbaresco (except for the name). The grapes come 100% from the prestigious Cru Basarin, a historic vineyard on the border between Neive and Treiso, whose altitude gives the Nebbiolo exceptional complexity and structure. The 20-year-old vines in the "Vigna del Parroco", the priest's vineyard, yield grapes of remarkable concentration, which are vinified in steel tanks with spontaneous fermentation. The impressively long maceration period of 35 days gives the wine its characteristic depth before it matures for over 12 months in barrique and tonneau – unfiltered and unfined, in keeping with the Sottimano philosophy of minimal intervention.

Basarin and San Cristoforo – on calcareous marl soils with sandy veins and moderate altitude – are the two Barbera sites for this powerful, exceptional wine. Selective manual harvesting, spontaneous fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts in stainless steel and a maceration period of around three to four weeks ensure depth and grip. For decades, the Sottimano family in Neive has vinified five individual Barbaresco vineyards separately: Cotta, Pajoré, Fausoni, Basarin and Currà – each with its own signature, each an independent argument for the terroir of the municipality. Barbaresco “Cottà" DOCG 2021
In 1969, Rino Sottimano acquired a vineyard that was to become the foundation of his winery: The Cru Cottà, 2.8 hectares located between the municipalities of Neive and Barbaresco, where south-westerly exposures and sandy soils give the Nebbiolo the fullness and structure that make this Barbaresco so special. The vines, now 80 years old, are spaced unusually far apart, a relic from times when vegetables and artichokes were still cultivated between the rows of vines. A historical planting method that gives the roots room to penetrate deep into the calcareous clay soil. Cottà has always been the most fruit-orientated of the five Sottimano crus, a wine of concentrated power that combines the fleshy polyphenols of the Neive vineyards with the distinctive tannin structure of Barbaresco.

Barbaresco “Fausoni” DOCG 2023
Sand changes everything. In Neive, where many Barbaresco soils are dominated by marl and clay, the Fausoni vineyard is characterised by sandy components – and this difference is not a detail. Sand conducts heat differently, drains faster, contains fewer nutrients and forces the vine to concentrate. At the same time, it gives the tannin a fineness that does not occur in heavier soil. 40-year-old vines planted in this light soil have learnt to grow deep and narrow. The result is the softest, most floral of the five Sottimano-Barbareschi wines. Natural yeast fermentation, long ageing on the skins, natural malolactic fermentation. 18 to 22 months in barriques specially made for the house, half on the lees. Like all five crus: no filtration, no fining, a further year in the bottle. The same care – and a completely different result.

Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2023
Treiso is not Neive. Once you understand this, you begin to read the Barbaresco appellation differently. Neive gives strength, weight, polyphenols. Treiso – the southernmost of the three Barbaresco communes, higher up, cooler, with more compact, calcareous soils – gives rigour, minerality and a longevity that some other sites lack. The MGA Pajoré is the voice of Treiso in the Sottimano collection: the most traditional, the most persistent and the one of the five cru that requires the most patience. Old vines on calcareous-clay soils, steep and well exposed. Organic cultivation since the beginning. Natural yeast fermentation, long maceration, natural malolactic. Matured for 18 to 22 months in François Frères barriques, half on the lees, minimal new wood. No filtration. No fining. A further year in the bottle. Basarin is the latest chapter in the Sottimano story – acquired in 2014, the fifth cru to complete the portfolio. And also the most complex. The small MGA Basarin extends over a heterogeneous terrain with a pronounced slope and considerable altitude – a terrain that appears almost rugged in comparison to the gentle hills of other Neive sites. The soils are of Miocene-Helvetian origin, predominantly calcareous, interspersed with sandy veins – a composition that allows for both mineral tension and aromatic depth. The vines here are heterogeneous in age and exposure, which places additional demands on the vinification: even more precise selection, even more precise harvest harvestthe harvest. Then the consistent Sottimano method: natural yeast fermentation, long maceration, spontaneous malolactic, 18 to 22 months in specially made barriques, one year in the bottle. No filtration. This is where it all began. When Rino Sottimano acquired the first plots of land in Neive in the 1970s, Cottà was his first vineyard – the south-west facing site close to the border with the municipality of Barbaresco, where the Nebbiolo benefits from two worlds: the strength and polyphenols that Neive gives its wines, and the tannin balance that the proximity to Barbaresco brings. It is the oldest soil in the family – and the most direct. 40 to 60-year-old vines on gently rolling slopes with light grey and yellowish Tortonian and Helvetic marl. Organic cultivation without compromise, natural yeast fermentation, long maceration with submerged cap. Malolactic fermentation, which is only completed in the spring after the harvest. Barbaresco “Currá" DOCG 2020
Currá: 2.8 hectares in the municipality of Neive, exposed to the south-south-west, where 55 to 75-year-old Nebbiolo vines sink their roots deep into pure limestone soil. This cru has always been synonymous with Barbareschi wines of exceptional structure and long ageing potential, wines that open up more slowly than their siblings and defy time with powerful, persistent tannins. The average yield is a modest 40 hectolitres per hectare – a deliberate self-restriction that guarantees concentration and expression in every berry. Currá combines the tannic power of a classic Barbaresco with the charming elegance that Neive brings to its wines, creating a wine of remarkable complexity. Andrea Sottimano treats the grapes from this vineyard with the same respectful care as all his cru wines: After meticulous hand-picking and selection, alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts. Maceration lasts up to three months, during which the cap of marc is regularly punctured in open stainless steel vats – this intensive extraction gives the Currá its characteristic tannin-emphasised structure. After transfer to wood, malolactic fermentation takes place slowly and naturally in barriques from the Burgundy cooperage François Frères, with around 15 per cent new wood being used. The wine matures in the barrel for 24 months before being bottled unfiltered and unfined and then left to rest in the bottle for another year to reach its full expressive potential.

"family business" Rino Sottimano calls his winery smiling. In fact, at the end of the 1960s, after his studies, he had acquired what was then a tiny farm in the middle of a vineyard. This vineyard is today one of the best individual sites in the Barbaresco area and Sottimano's most famous wine: Cottà. Together with his wife Anna, "without whom none of this would have been possible."Rino recultivated the vineyards and gradually acquired the vineyards and the "with any luck" some more famous vineyards in best sites: Cottá, Currá, Fausoni, Pajoré and Basarin, from which the single sites Barbaresco are also pressed. In the meantime, daughter Elena and son Andrea are fully integrated into the company.
Very early Rino Sottimano started with organic fertilization and renounced chemical sprays. Since 1990 with full consistency. The rows are greened and are only mown 2-3 times per year, only in autumn every second row is ploughed. Fermented spontaneously, only with own yeasts. In the cool cellar a very slow fermentation with a long maceration period between 24 and 30 days is practised. Barriques are used, but only one third are renewed per year, the rest are used. You could call the Sottimanos modern traditionalists. Son Andrea, who now rules in the cellar, pays attention to a slow, careful malolactic fermentation and lets the wines mature up to one year on the fine yeast. Then the wines mature 18-24 months in neutral barriques. Since the use of French barriques is so discreet, wood notes are hardly noticeable even in youth. After ageing, the wine is bottled without filtration and other fining. The wines convince by their fine fruity, elegant, subtle and yet hearty character.
The vines are now between 25 and 70 years old and therefore already carry a little less, which is why they hardly need to be thinned out. Through this respect for nature in the vineyards, which are all cultivated the same way, and only minimal interventions in the winemaking process, Sottimano's philosophy is to let the vineyards speak in the wine, "because often already 200 meters make a difference"The glass is easily comprehensible and convinces even skeptics of the terroir idea.
In addition to the multiple award-winning Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and a wine made from the autochthonous Brachetto grape variety, which are also among the best in the region, are produced. SUPERIORE.DE
