• "Bric del Salto" Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2019

“Bric del Salto” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2019

Bright ruby red. Bric del Salto interprets the famous Piedmontese grape variety in a direct and classic way. A fruity bouquet combines with the spiciness typical of Neive. On the palate, again clear, with precise fruit, the right dose of fine tannin - and over all, an inspiring freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Blackberry, black currant and violet flavors are defined by vivid acidity in this red. Earth and mineral accents add depth. Balanced and long." Wine Spectator

    • "Pairolero" Barbera d'Alba Superiore DOC 2019

“Pairolero” Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2019

Purple red with black-violet reflections. Wonderfully concentrated and extract-rich Barbera with the right mix of power, fruit and juiciness. Some plum jam, black chocolate and spices combine to create a dark-fruited firework of flavours, framed by finely polished tannin and accompanied into a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Sottimano 2019 Barbera d'Alba Superiore Pairolero is dark and savory with loads of dark cherry and blackberry preserves. The wine is full, generous, and it covers the palate with extra richness and concentration. It feels soft and velvety to the palate, thanks to the high quality and texture of all that luscious fruit. You can't go wrong with a tasty tagliatelle with mushrooms. The wine is aged in equal parts barrique and large barrel. You get terrific value with this bottle." Robert Parker

    • Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2018

      Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2018

Garnet red with light red rim. Beautiful aroma of red fruits, interwoven with a subtle spicy vein. With a little aeration already today a very fine, beguiling and valuable drop which creates a wonderful drinking flow with its juiciness. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo turned out quite elegant and fine. The vines are about 15 years old here, and yet you pick up very refined notes. Again, we're dealing with an ample 30 days of maceration and ten days of submerged cap, similar to every Barbaresco they make, but the difference here is you don't need perfect skins like you do with the other expressions." • Barbaresco "Fausoni" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Fausoni” DOCG 2015

Translucent purple with a fresh, garnet red edge. The bouquet is a potpourri of dried fruits, dark chocolate and a delicate nougat note. Opened on the palate, it is fruity and velvety and with its straight lines and wonderfully integrated acidity it will be a pleasure for many years to come. SUPERIORE.DE

"Broad-shouldered, with cherry, loam and licorice notes, this red boasts well-appointed tannins and bright acidity. Complex and chewy on the long finish." Wine Spectator

"Showing elegance and grace starting with the first sip, the 2015 Barbaresco Fausoni also reveals power and integration. You get both sides of the spectrum with this wine: silk and muscle. The bouquet emits aromas of pressed blue flower, rose hip, dried red currant, spice and fine licorice. The finish is compact and long in persistence." Robert Parker

"Deep, plum and floral nose, then a ripe and generous palate with considerable tannic power, but also very good balance. The dry, quite minerally finish is long and intense." James Suckling

"Just bottled, the 2015 Barbaresco Fausoni possesses a level of volume and intensity to a degree I have not seen in this wine before. Sweet, perfumed and super-inviting, the 2015 is going to be nearly impossible to resist in its youth. Virtually seamless in the glass, but with considerable supporting structure, the 2015 captures all the sexiness of the year. The interplay between the radiance of the vintage and the more energetic, vibrant qualities that are typical of this site is compelling. Hard candy, rose petal, orange zest, mint and spice infuse the creamy, resonant finish." Antonio Galloni

    • Barbaresco "Cottá" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Cottá" DOCG 2015

Bright garnet red with copper edge. Fine cinema smell of red fruits and sea buckthorn. In addition forest soil paired with a breath of tobacco and bitter almond. In the glass then still young, at first loud tannins, with some air then softer tones and a powerful, lasting finale. An elegant, aristocratic wine that leaves a lasting impression not only at the first glass. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Maturing mid ruby with narrow bricky rim. Cloves, cinnamon bark and cherry palate with lots of coating tannins. Great balance, length and concentration. Hedonistic but needs more time." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barbaresco Cottá comes across as a bit heavy, which is something that can happen in warmer vintages, where the natural heft of this site is amplified. There is no shortage of intensity and power, but the Cottà feels blowsy today. On the more positive side, the 2015 does offer a good bit of freshness. It will be interesting to see where things ultimately shake out here." Antonio Galloni

"Very attractive red-cherry, redcurrant, plum and floral nose with discreet oak, then a sleek yet powerful and tannic palate with a lot of structure and some real elegance. Enough fruit for immediate drinking, but this is made for aging." James Suckling

"From a celebrated cru in Neive, the 2015 Barbaresco Cottá is a shapely, soft and accessible interpretation of Nebbiolo from a warm vintage. This mid-weight wine boasts a bright bouquet with ruby highlights. Those aromas are alert, tonic and straightforward in delivery. In terms of mouthfeel, this wine is firm and structured. However, the astringency is safely within bounds (for a young Nebbiolo). Some 10,000 bottles were made. Only 10% of the wine goes into new oak and the rest goes into neutral barrique." Robert Parker

"Cherry, strawberry, chicory and woodsy notes mark this solidly structured, tightly wound Barbaresco. The sweet fruit offsets the dense tannins for balance, and this stays long and vibrant." Wine Spectator

    • Barbaresco "Pajoré" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2015

Bright garnet red with copper edge. Here comes the most opulent and friendly Barbaresco of the highly impressive squad of Sottimano's individual vineyards. Lavish scent of black fruits, orange peel, rounded off with a fine nut note. Fine-grained tannin already at an early age envelops the firm structure and reinforces the highly distinctive character - and this is only the beginning: with the years of maturity, Pajoré will have convinced even the last doubter of his monumental charisma and cast a spell over him! SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense ruby garnet with luminous core. Elegant nose of rose petals, plums and some rum pot, in the aftertaste of blackberries. Plucking and salty on the palate, balanced and harmonious from start to finish, especially in the middle very strong, ends long and fruity". Falstaff

"Tasted blind. Dark ruby with narrow bricky rim. Ripe, dark cherry that is a little ethereal but certainly complex. Full, ripe-fruit palate that is not yet as complex as the nose has it, but certainly generous and mouth-filling. Long and tactile finish with bags of grainy tannins matching the rich fruit." Jancis Robinson

"Sleek and linear, with cherry, strawberry, menthol and chalky, stony flavors fused to the muscular tannins. Finishes lean and dry, with a kernel of sweet fruit bound up in the structure. This seems to have already shut down, so forget about it for five years." Wine Spectator

"Intense aroma of cloves, but also rose and earth notes. This rather sophisticated, medium-to full-bodied Barbaresco has bold, dry tannins that are well integrated and a long, dry finish." James Suckling

"Of these various single-vintage releases by Sottimano (including Basarin, Cottá and Fausoni), the 2015 Barbaresco Pajorè is very well integrated and smooth. The tannin management shows an excellent approach, and you don't get the astringency that comes forward in the Basarin. Instead, this expression offers increased focus on the ripe, round and plump fruit of the vintage. Only 5,000 bottles (including magnums) were produced." Robert Parker

"The 2015 Barbaresco Pajoré is the most potent and brooding of the 2015s. The heft, weight and structure of Pajoré comes through in the 2015, but the flavor profile is similar to that of the other wines. Racy, silky and generous, the 2015 is very much the product of a warm, sunny growing season. The Pajoré will need at least a few years to shed some tannin, but it is very showy, even at this early stage." Antonio Galloni

    • Barbaresco "Pajoré" DOCG 2017

      Barbaresco “Pajoré" DOCG 2017

Here comes the most opulent and friendly Barbaresco of Sottimano's overall highly impressive squad of single vineyards. Bright garnet red with copper rim. Lavish scent of black fruits, orange peel, rounded off with a fine nut note. Fine-grained tannin already at a young age coats the firm structure and reinforces the well recognizable highly independent character. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brightening, medium dense garnet red. Very finely marked nose with rich notes of fresh dark cherries, clear and bright, some anchovy and caper leaf behind. Gripping and grippy on the palate, opens with present, dense tannin, builds nicely, juicy on the final." Falstaff

"With fruit from Treiso, this wine is often recognized by its immediate and accessible personality, with silky tannins and delicate floral aromas. The Sottimano family farms five separate vineyard sites in the appellation. The 2017 Barbaresco Pajoré is a little more subdued in this vintage with a wide assortment of earthy, wild fruit and licorice aromas. This expression offers a lower threshold on the aromatic high points. However, the palate is more elaborate and constructed in this vintage with firm, free-standing tannins that give lift and buoyancy." Robert Parker

"Violet, new leather, truffle and spiced plum are just some of the aromas you'll find on this captivating red. Full bodied and boasting youthful tension, the linear palate delivers mature Morello cherry, spiced cranberry, star anise and tobacco framed in tightly knit, fine-grained tannins. Drink 2023–2030." Opened on the palate fruity and velvety and will be a pleasure for many years to come with its straightforwardness and wonderfully integrated acidity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Smells beguilingly of red berries, truffles and flowers; elegant approach, the tannins youthful and yet fine-grained, combines character, freshness, great length. In short: great Barbaresco that can still mature." Vinum

"Mid ruby. Serious, savoury nose that is still a little closed. Brooding and still a little compact and firm on the palate, but with a succulent, tightly knit finish with persistent, sandpapery tannins. Very youthful and solidly built." Jancis Robinson

"Plum and cherry fruit is accented by licorice, leather and tar notes in this tightly wound red. The tannins are on the severe side today, yet this finds equilibrium in the end." Wine Spectator

"Delicious, lifted notes of incense and candlewax envelop dried rose petals and cedar. Tannic and structured, full-bodied and powerful, this remains an elegant Barbaresco with a sheen of iridescent acidity and a buffed, polished texture. Drink from 2021." James Suckling

"The 2016 Barbaresco Fausoni is another superb wine in this lineup of 2016 Barbarescos from the Sottimano family. Bright floral and citrus overtones give the 2016 a vibrant, chiseled feel. Sweet red/purplish berry fruit, blood orange, spice, menthol rose petal and lavender are some of the many notes that flesh out in this super-expressive, mid-weight Barbaresco from Sottimano. Aromatically lifted, dense on the palate and also very structured, the 2016 is a very complete Fausoni. The 2016 finishes with tremendous persistence and a classic sense of austerity that is compelling." VINOUS

"The Fausoni zone provides sandy and clay soils, and you get more power here than from the other locations. These vines are 35 to 40 years old, and the 2016 Barbaresco Fausoni lets fly those menthol notes that are so characteristic of this vineyard in Neive. Slightly more balsamic in its aromatic profile than the other Barbarescos, this expression of Nebbiolo, sitting sur lies for two years, shows a very different tannic feel in a wine that offers surprising freshness and purity. Those minty Neive notes, its direct and linear nature, plus the very precise and sharply managed tannins make this cru a winner in my book." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco "Basarin" DOCG 2016

      Barbaresco “Basarin” DOCG 2016

Do you know the small vineyard Basarin near Neive? A bright ruby garnet awaits you and a wine from a particularly beautiful vintage: on the nose, a cornucopia of aromas of wild sour cherry, herbs, some liquorice and tobacco. On the palate firm and very clearly structured, muscular and yet with an elegance that never loses control due to the power. Basarin is a highly energetic and precise Nebbiolo that reveals its complexity only with some patience and aeration. The neighboring Neive terroir shows itself with distinguished elegance and marries harmoniously with the volume and weight typical of the site - and in a depth that only vines over 50 years old can produce. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, rich ruby garnet. Intense nose with lots of ripe berry fruit, intense plum, some blackberry, exciting. Powerful and substantial on the palate, shows lots of rich, grippy tannin, builds up for a long time." Falstaff

"The Sottimano family produce four Barbaresco single-vineyard wines - Basarin in Neive being a new addition from the 2014 vintage. The wines are aged in barriques, but the proportion of new oak has been severely reduced in recent years. This is no blockbuster, and the lean, precise raspberry nose shows elegance rather than power. A stylish wine, it's fresh and fluid with refined tannins and no overt extraction, showing charm and lift on the long finish." Decanter

"The 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is elegant, perfumed and gracious. Sweet dark cherry, lavender, spice and mint all grace this nuanced, understated Barbaresco from Sottimano. The Basarin shows a decidedly aromatic, finessed expression of Neive." Vinous

"Focused and full bodied, this has aromas of underbrush, eucalyptus, crushed botanical herb and wild rose. The chiseled palate delivers tension, structure and finesse, featuring cranberry, pomegranate, licorice and tobacco framed in tightly wound, fine-grained tannins. Youthfully nervous acidity gives it balance and an ageworthy structure. Drink 2024–2036." Wine Enthusiast

"The Sottimano 2016 Barbaresco Basarin is a contained and elegant expression with sharp intensity and defined aromas. You get wild fruit, spice, balsam herb and crushed mineral, all pretty much in equal measure. The wine flexes its muscle, adding volume and weight with each swirl of the glass. It shows energy and fluid movements. Sottimano farms a three-hectare plot in Basarin, in Neive but near the border with Treiso, with 50- to 60-year-old vines." Robert Parker

    • Barbaresco "Currá" DOCG 2013

      Barbaresco “Currá" DOCG 2013

Garnet red with delicate violet reflections. Currá 2013 is initially archaic and unapproachable. With time and oxygen it reveals dark berries and a fine chocolate note. In his style he is rather angular, but does not deny his greatness and harmony at any point. Tobacco, plums, smoke and tobacco: with every glass this exceptional wine reveals new facets and a firework of impressions. So Nebbiolo goes from 65 years old vines at the highest level! SUPERIORE.DE

"A fresh, cherry-, mineral- and tar-flavored red whose great structure provides support. Elements of underbrush and earth come into play on the lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2013 Barbaresco Currá offers a savory side that is seamlessly juxtaposed against a plump fruity side. Those two halves paint a pretty picture of this unusual and slightly cooler vintage. The wine shows power and a great sense of forward thrust or momentum that will serve it well as it ages in your cellar. The 1.5-hectare vineyard is planted to 65-year-old vines in the Neive subzone." Robert Parker

"A rich, explosive wine, the 2013 Barbaresco Currà possesses remarkable depth, intensity and power. Dark cherry, smoke, leather, spice and savory herb nuances saturate the palate in an explosive, full-throttle Barbaresco. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2013 is going to need at least several years in bottle to fully come around. A final blast of exotic, perfumed aromatics makes it very hard to move onto the next wine." Antonio Galloni

    • Barbaresco "Currá" DOCG 2015

      Barbaresco “Currá" DOCG 2015

Currá is an archaic long-distance runner and presents itself very aristocratic at a young age as it matures in the bottle or is well ventilated. Then he reveals dark berries and a fine chocolate note on the nose. In its style it is angular at the beginning, but does not deny its size and harmony at any point. Tobacco, plums, smoke and tobacco: with each glass, this exceptional wine reveals new facets and a firework of impressions. Thus Nebbiolo goes from 65 year old vines at the highest level! SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Quite a pretty nose of cherry fruit and raspberry jam with a hint of oak and liquorice. Generous fruit that still is not entirely open on the palate with a fine nerve of ripe acidity. Ripe, chewy tannins frame the fruit on the long finish." Jancis Robinson

"Fragrant and focused, this offers tantalizing aromas of rose, violet, woodland berry and Asian incense. Firm and linear, the chiseled palate evokes red cherry, cranberry, star anise and a hint of white pepper set against tightly wound fine-grained tannins. It's still young and austere but balanced, with vibrant acidity. Give it ample time to fully develop." Vinous

"Here's a little hop, skip and a jump back in time to a vintage with great personality and character. The Sottimano 2015 Barbaresco Currá is a majestic expression that unfolds to reveal dark fruit, spice and carefully evolved aromas of tar, licorice and spent embers. Past vintages of this wine have started off slow and closed (that's one of Currá's age-worthy attributes), but the warm and sunny 2015 vintage starts with high aromatic intensity." Robert Parker

      Barbaresco “Currá" DOCG 2016

Currá is an archaic long-distance runner and presents itself very aristocratic when young with increasing bottle maturity or also good aeration. Then it reveals dark berries and a fine chocolate note in the bouquet. In its style, it is edgy at first, but then at no point denies its greatness and harmony. Tobacco, plums, smoke and tobacco: with every glass, this exceptional wine reveals new facets and a firework of impressions. This is Nebbiolo from 65-year-old vines at the highest level! SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid to deep developing ruby with narrow orange rim. Firm nose of ripe fruit spiked with sweet baking spices. Compact sour-cherry fruit palate with bags of crunchy tannins. Succulent and with tannic bite on the finish. Quite gorgeous." Jancis Robinson

"A beefy style, this red buries its cherry, iron and menthol flavors in a matrix of thick tannins. The vivid acidity works in tandem, yet in the end, there's an equilibrium of all the elements, with the fruit reemerging." Wine Spectator

"Showing darker and slightly more saturated fruit, the Sottimano 2016 Barbaresco Currá is a more robust and amply endowed wine compared to the other single-vineyard expressions in this portfolio. Drawing its fruit from the village of Neive, the Currá offers ripe berry and redcurrant with softer tones of spice and tilled earth. The wine's concentration and richness are an absolute pleasure, and you could direct this bottle to a heavier roasted meat dish when the time is right. Fruit is drawn from a 1.5-hectare plot in Neive." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersSottimanoPiedmont
    Sottimano

"family business" Rino Sottimano calls his winery smiling. In fact, at the end of the 1960s, after his studies, he had acquired what was then a tiny farm in the middle of a vineyard. This vineyard is today one of the best individual sites in the Barbaresco area and Sottimano's most famous wine: Cottà. Together with his wife Anna, "without whom none of this would have been possible."Rino recultivated the vineyards and gradually acquired the vineyards and the "with any luck" some more famous vineyards in best sites: Cottá, Currá, Fausoni, Pajoré and Basarin, from which the single sites Barbaresco are also pressed. In the meantime, daughter Elena and son Andrea are fully integrated into the company.

Very early Rino Sottimano started with organic fertilization and renounced chemical sprays. Since 1990 with full consistency. The rows are greened and are only mown 2-3 times per year, only in autumn every second row is ploughed. Fermented spontaneously, only with own yeasts. In the cool cellar a very slow fermentation with a long maceration period between 24 and 30 days is practised. Barriques are used, but only one third are renewed per year, the rest are used. You could call the Sottimanos modern traditionalists. Son Andrea, who now rules in the cellar, pays attention to a slow, careful malolactic fermentation and lets the wines mature up to one year on the fine yeast. Then the wines mature 18-24 months in neutral barriques. Since the use of French barriques is so discreet, wood notes are hardly noticeable even in youth. After ageing, the wine is bottled without filtration and other fining. The wines convince by their fine fruity, elegant, subtle and yet hearty character.

The vines are now between 25 and 70 years old and therefore already carry a little less, which is why they hardly need to be thinned out. Through this respect for nature in the vineyards, which are all cultivated the same way, and only minimal interventions in the winemaking process, Sottimano's philosophy is to let the vineyards speak in the wine, "because often already 200 meters make a difference"The glass is easily comprehensible and convinces even skeptics of the terroir idea.

In addition to the multiple award-winning Barbaresco, Dolcetto, Barbera, Langhe Nebbiolo and a wine made from the autochthonous Brachetto grape variety, which are also among the best in the region, are produced. SUPERIORE.DE
