    • "Pètracine" Riesling Langhe DOC 2015

      “Pètracine” Riesling Langhe DOC 2015

The pioneer of Riesling on Italian soil is Aldo Vajra. Already fascinated by the variety as a student, he planted the first vines of the White Riesling variety in the Langa. Very light yellow-green in youth, developing into a strong straw yellow. The aromas of the noble Pètracine are also varied. Beginning with peach and apricot, delicate floral and citrus notes follow in its food, while minerality comes to the fore as it matures. On the palate harmonious and precisely structured, almost austere, fascinatingly complex and long. Great maturing potential! SUPERIORE.DE

"In 2015 Vajra's Riesling Piètracine is built on a core of rich, expansive fruit. Peach, apricot pit, chamomile and lightly honeyed notes infuse the creamy, expressive finish. This is one of the more racy, forward vintages of the Riesling I can remember tasting. I would prefer to drink it sooner rather than later." Antonio Galloni

    • Freisa "Kyè" Langhe DOC 2015

      Freisa “Kyè" Langhe DOC 2015

Vajra not only recognized the potential of the Freisa grape with Kyè, but redefined it. An explosive wine with dark fruits, violets, minerals, menthol and spices. Amazingly beautiful and multidimensional, the fruit remains primary and the tannins are firm. Elegance all the way and Freisa all the way, but without the ancient rusticity of this native variety. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Langhe Freisa Kyè will be released later this October. Freisa is a fascinating grape that has the structure of Nebbiolo and the freshness of Barbera. It also has a unique touch of bitterness that comes naturally to this variety. G D Vajra has shaped a sophisticated and fruit-driven expression. They let the grapes hang longer in the vineyard before harvest to take away some of that greenness that comes from the seeds. This warm vintage has shaped a soft and rich red wine. This is an attractive pairing partner to serve with lamb or pork dishes." Robert Parker

    • Barolo "Albe" DOCG 2014

      Barolo “Albe” DOCG 2014

Barolo Albe is very multi-layered with tobacco, violet and berry tones and a multi-faceted bouquet. Deep and persistent on the palate with elegant tannin structure and pleasant acid reader, long lasting. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense dark ruby red with a sparkling core. Deep and multi-layered nose of dark blackberries, ripe Amarena cherries, with a slight reverberation of gunpowder. It spreads beautifully on the palate, has well integrated acidity and finely meshed tannin, remains long and fruity in the finale." Falstaff

"Cherry, leather, spice and leafy underbrush flavors walk the line between sweet fruit and bitter tannins. Finds balance in concert with the delicate frame. Fine length." Wine Spectator

"A tribute to local tradition, the 2014 Barolo Albe represents an assembly of fruit from various vineyard plots throughout the area. Winemaking is classic in approach with a 25-day maceration period and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. This vintage shows silky, fine lines and a more accessible approach for near and medium-term drinking" Robert Parker

    • Barolo "Albe" DOCG 2013

      Barolo “Albe” DOCG 2013

Barolo Albe is very multi-layered with tobacco, violet and berry tones and a multi-faceted bouquet. Deep and persistent on the palate with elegant tannin structure and pleasant acid reader, long lasting. SUPERIORE.DE

"Vajra's 2013 Barolo Albe is beautifully perfumed, sensual and expressive in this vintage, with a bit less overt fruit and more aromatic/structural intensity than is often the case. The style of the Albe has always favored a more succulent expression of Nebbiolo that is quite different from the single-vineyard wines, but the 2013 suggests Vajra may be moving the Albe closer in line stylistically to their other Barolos, which I think is a positive. In any event, there is an element of restraint in the 2013 that is hugely appealing. The Albe is a blend of fruit from Fossati, Coste di Vergne and La Volta aged in 75 hectoliter casks. The Albe may be the single best value in Barolo today. As for the 2013, don't miss it!" Antonio Galloni

"Aromas of fresh-cut hay and grass shade the flavors of cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco in this elegant, taut red. A little compact now on the finish, yet should stretch out with some age." Wine Spectator

    • Barolo "Albe" DOCG 2015

      Barolo “Albe” DOCG 2015

Barolo Albe comes from three parcels: Fossati, Castello della Volta and Costa di Vergne. The 2015 edition is a real eye-catcher. Brilliant and finely formed on the palate, it captivates from the first taste. Expressive, floral notes merge into bright red fruits, mint and ground berries in a lively, distinctive Barolo, equipped with pure energy and class. As in all good years, Barolo Albe is juicy and fruity and is like every year due to its comparatively moderate price a clear purchase! SUPERIORE.DE

"Mid ruby. Lifted and appealing cherry nose with a hint of cocoa and black tea leaves. Supple palate with plenty of ripe fruit and lots of delicious chewy tannins. Really accessible and long. Great balance." Jancis Robinson

"Elegant and pure aromas on the nose. Sour cherry, rose petals on the palate with a clean and long finish." Decanter

"The 2015 Barolo Albe is a soft, open-knit wine that will drink well upon release. Bright and lifted, with plenty of red cherry fruit and floral notes, the Albe captures the essence of the Vajra house style nicely. This is a terrific entry-level Barolo, not to mention one of the finest values in Piedmont." VINOUS

"Pretty, featuring rose, cherry, raspberry and mint flavors, with a touch of mineral. Supple, harmonious and elegant, offering a long finish. The aftertaste is tinged with orange peel and tobacco notes." Wine Spectator

"This Barolo offers a more immediate approach, with lots of dark berry followed by spice, tilled earth and black truffle. The 2015 Barolo Albe pours to a medium dark color and lays out a mid-weight texture, with bright primary fruit that is expertly woven into the wine. It exposes clearly etched veins of acidity and some determinedly firm tannins. Despite the Albe's accessible personality, I recommend that you wait a few more years before popping the cork." • Barolo "Ravera" DOCG 2014

      Barolo “Ravera” DOCG 2014

Barolo Ravera from Vajra is an earthy, rich drop with a robust tannin structure and a well-measured acid nerve - an impressive wine, the climax of which one can already look forward to in the coming years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tasted blind. Surprisingly dark ruby for this vintage. Brooding richness on the nose. Plenty of sour cherry on the palate and firm, somewhat drying tannins. This is still very youthful, and unsettled." Jancis Robinson

"This rich red is laced with cherry fruit and feels approachable now. Offers firm underlying tannins, along with accents of mineral and tobacco. Balanced, with a long finish." Wine Spectator

"A stark contrast to the Bricco delle Viole, Vajra's 2014 Barolo Ravera is a tannic, powerful wine. There is quite a bit of power and depth, but the tannins are also rustic and a touch rough around the edges. The 2014 is going to need time to settle down." Antonio Galloni

"The 2014 Barolo Ravera is indeed a fuller and more structured expression. The bouquet opens to dark fruit, iodine and mineral nuances. Ravera is a low-altitude vineyard from an estate that is specialized in high-altitude Nebbiolo farming. That added power is well suited to this thinner vintage." Robert Parker

      Barolo “Baudana Cerretta” DOCG 2011

Excellent site Barolo Cerretta, very strong and elegant, with the classic spicy cherry bouquet, very beautifully articulated. Full fruit of forest berries on the palate, pleasantly silky tannin and a good acidity form the opulent taste structure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Dark berry, pressed flower, iron, leather and spice aromas come together on this firmly structured wine. The full-bodied palate delivers juicy black cherry, eucalyptus, anise and clove alongside big, velvety tannins. A licorice note closes the lingering finish. It’s already almost approachable but hold for more complexity."Wine Enthusiast

      Barolo “Baudana Cerretta” DOCG 2012

Barolo Baudana from the individual vineyard Cerretta presents itself energetic and intense with a scent of black cherries, wild herbs, smoke and tar. Convincing also on the palate with complex aromas and textures, strength and structure. The powerful tannin and the imposing acidity unmistakably show the style of a classic Barolo. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2012 Barolo Cerretta is richer, deeper and darker than the Baudana. Black cherry, smoke, licorice and dark spices open up first, followed by scents of sage, rosemary and mint that add complexity. In 2012, the Cerretta is more about brawn than finesse. Layers of fruit fill out the wine's ample frame nicely, but above all else, the Cerretta is distinguished for its raw, almost animal, power." Antonio Galloni

"A bright, floral-, strawberry-, cherry- and herb-flavored version, allied to an elegant profile. Picks up mineral and tobacco notes as this cruises to a lengthy conclusion. Though stylish, this has ample grip and complexity." Wine Spectator

"Raspberry compote, star anise, grilled herb and sun baked earth and a whiff of leather are some of the aromas you'll find on this structured Barolo. On the full-bodied palate, chopped mint, licorice and tobacco accent ripe Morello cherry and juicy raspberry." Wine Enthusiast

      Barolo Ravera DOCG 2015

Brilliant, intense ruby red. Very intense, fruity nose with hints of ripe forest raspberries, blackberries, also some dark currant juice, in the background some laurel. Ravera 2015 presents itself very juicy in its base and course, shows a lot of crunchy cherry fruit, opens with fine-meshed, present tannin, which is very well incorporated. A long reverberation in the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Lustrous, youthful mid ruby. Brooding yet generous nose with cherry fruit and hints of iron. Layered, concentrated cherry palate with bags of muscular tannins. Great balance and length, but it still needs to shed its youthful fruit sweetness." Jancis Robinson

"The 2015 Barolo Ravera captures all the best the vintage has to offer. More importantly, it has that extra level of textural richness and sweetness that the Bricco delle Viole does not have, at least not today. Creamy and beautifully textured in the glass, the 2015 is a total winner. Bright red raspberry and pomegranate fruit notes are lifted, while expressive floral and blood orange overtones add brightness. The 2015 suggests that the Ravera might, in time, become the flagship wine here. Don't miss it!" VINOUS

      Barolo “Luigi Baudana” DOCG 2013

Fresh, sparkling ruby garnet. Opened with notes of pickled anchovies, then leather and dark forest raspberry. On the palate a lot of dense, substantial tannin, rapidly drags through, fine fruit, in the finale firm pressure. Put it away for a few more years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, medium ruby. In mouth and nose it looks strict and quite closed. Only with air does a scent of red berries and floral hints develop. Classic tannin structure on the palate, combined with a slowly intensifying, very pure fruit. "Very vital, much inner tension and minerality. Weinwisser

"The 2013 Barolo Baudana opens with striking, beguiling aromatics. Deep, pliant and sensual on the palate, the 2013 exudes fruit intensity to the point the tannins are nearly buried. Intense savory and mineral notes provide an underpinning of virile intensity that builds into the super-expressive finish." Antonio Galloni

"Seems open and forthcoming for the cherry, black currant and floral aromas and flavors, but this red has some punch too. The dense tannins provide support, while tobacco, green olive and mineral notes add depth. Terrific length." Wine Spectator

    About the winemakers
    G.D. Vajra
    Piedmont
    G.D. Vajra

The noble wines of G.D. Vajra with their elegance and beauty are a reference for a world-famous royal wine. The winery has been in existence since the 1970s and is located in Vergne, the highest village in the western Barolo area. The Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera varieties are cultivated there, as well as the Freisa and even the white Riesling grapes, which were important in the past, in strict compliance with fundamental ethical values. The initials of the winery G.D. Vajra stand for Giuseppe Domenico, Aldo Vajra's father, who signed the founding documents of the winery in 1972, as Aldo himself was still a minor. His wife Milena joined the company in the 1980s and together they managed to bring the initially small company with today's top locations Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta to world fame in Barolo production. In the meantime, Aldo's children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro are entrusted with the work in the company.

The grapes of G.D. Vajra have always been grown close to nature. As they mature only late, the authentic, strong character and multi-faceted wines produced in the estate are of a cool elegance. Its aromatic finesse is brought into balance with a lively but well-proportioned acidity in beautifully modern and functionally designed cellars. The wines are traditionally characterized by a longer maceration and are predominantly aged in Slovenian barrels. In this Piedmontese winery, values such as wholeness and harmony are written in capital letters.

In 2009, the Vajra family, modest, hospitable and not by chance left their vineyard portfolio of the highest quality with the acquisition of the Baudana company in Serralunga d'Alba upgraded again. Here, in the heart of the Barolo area, two top-quality plants thrive in the top locations of Baudana and Cerretta.

The fact that the wines produced in the G.D. Vajra winery with great personal commitment - above all the Bricco delle Viole - are first-class is confirmed again and again by ratings in wine guides such Gambero Rossoas , Robert Parker, Antonio Galloniand also in the Veronelli Guide. "It is a true amusement park of varieties and areas that Aldo and Milena Vajra have built over the years. Few wineries in the Langa region have succeeded in experimenting successfully with less common types of wine such as Riesling Renano, Pinot Nero and Freisa, while maintaining admirable stylistic coherence for the great classics. (...) With the acquisition of the Luigi Baudana company, the Baudana and Cerretta di Serralunga plots are now also part of the family business."Gambero Rosso 2015
