• Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2019

      Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2019

Deep ruby red with a violet tinge, the typical cherry flavour with notes of rose and bitter almonds caresses the palate. This Dolcetto shines with a powerful body and a fruity, crisp finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The G.D. Vajra 2019 Dolcetto d'Alba is a dark and exuberant wine that offers a naked and pure interpretation of this easy and food-friendly grape. Dolcetto d'Alba is the kind of wine I'd love to pair with my favorite broccoli rapini and spicy sausage pizza from a wood oven. Dark cherry, blackberry and prune segue to bitter almond and tilled earth." Robert Parker

      “Dragon” Bianco Langhe DOC 2019

Rare white from Vajra's 4-hectare boutique Baudana Winery in Serralunga. Scent of flintstone and flower meadow, fresh fruity body and elegant mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Luigi Baudana 2019 Langhe Bianco Dragon is a blend of 46% Chardonnay, 25% Sauvignon Blanc, 24% Nascetta and 5% Riesling. The wine is luminous and bright with bright citrus, nectarine and passion fruit. This is a wholeheartedly open and pleasurable blended white that has the balanced acidity and the fun, aromatic character to pair with exotic dishes with lemongrass, basil or cilantro. The finish is lean and compact, and the wine ends with a taste of salty mineral." Robert Parker

    • "Coste & Fossati" Dolcetto d'Alba DOC 2018

      “Coste & Fossati” Dolcetto d’Alba DOC 2018

Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati is one of the benchmark wines of the appellation. A very dark purple drop with a bouquet of toasted almonds, cherries, tar and chocolate. On the palate it is voluminous, long and rich, velvety and juicy with subtle sweetness, impressive the gripping texture. Already a pleasure today and undoubtedly a great experience in a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"A pure, black cherry– and blackberry-flavored red, this is rich and balanced, with juicy acidity and refined tannins meshing with the texture and ripe fruit." Wine Spectator

"The G.D. Vajra 2018 Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati is a plump, succulent and rich expression that offers a clear view into the fundamentals of the Dolcetto grape. Fruit comes from two vineyard sites, Coste di Vergne and Fossati (in the comune di Barolo), with characteristic Sant'Agata marl soils rich in fossils. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel, and traditional winemaking protocol called for submerged cap. That method was used until 1989, then abandoned, but it came back with this 2018 vintage. Submerged cap is a process that works to stabilize the deep color you see here, and it draws out the intensity of the blackberry, black currant and dark fruit aromas. With 8,000 bottles produced, this is a terrific and well-priced wine." Robert Parker

"The 2018 Dolcetto d'Alba Coste & Fossati is a gorgeous wine. Usually, the Coste & Fossati is a richer, bigger wine; the 2018, on the other hand, offers lovely mid-palate depth, but in a restrained, perfumed style that is hugely appealing. Dark red cherry, red plum, chocolate, licorice and spice all flesh out in this delicious and inviting Dolcetto from the Vajra family." Vinous

    • Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2018

      Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2018

Typical Langhe Nebbiolo. Garnet red, distinct scent of wild berries. The very fruity yet cool-elegant taste shows its silky yet solid flanking tannins and harmonious acidity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby with dark tendency. Hearty nose of ripe cherries, raspberries, dried rose petals, subtle hints of beetroot, hazelnut in the aftertaste. On the palate very clear with juicy acidity and pithy fruit, opens an elegant umbrella, deep, with emphasis. Falstaff

"The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo emerges from a parcel in Sinio. Dark fruit, spice, earthy notes and a good bit of tannin give the Vajra's Langhe Nebbiolo a decidedly brooding, powerful feel and quite a bit more seriousness than is typical at this level. Sweet red berry fruit, mint and spice add freshness alongside bright acidity as the 2018 opens up in the glass. This is such a pretty and expressive wine." Vinous

      Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2017

Barbera d'Alba Superiore from Vajra is a very elegant version of the versatile Barbera grape. Sweet cherries and blackberries are enveloped by a hearty touch of black olives and capers. The wine shows great aromatic perfection, length and an accentuated style. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is plush, racy and flat-out delicious. Raspberry jam, cinnamon, dried flowers, sweet tobacco and cedar all flesh out in a forward, plush Barbera that will drink well right out the gate. • "Pétracine" Riesling Langhe DOC 2019 (BIO)

“Pétracine” Riesling Langhe DOC 2019 (BIO)

The pioneer of Riesling on Italian soil is Aldo Vajra. Fascinated by the variety even as a student, he planted the first vines of the White Riesling variety in the Langa. Very pale yellow-green when young, which develops into a strong straw yellow. The aromas of the noble Pètracine also take a varied course. Beginning with peach and apricot, delicate floral and citrus notes follow in his food, while with increasing ripeness, minerality comes to the fore. On the palate it is harmonious and precisely structured, almost austere, fascinatingly complex and long. Great ageing potential! SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Kyè" Freisa Langhe DOC 2016

      “Kyè" Freisa Langhe DOC 2016

Vajra has not only recognized the potential of the Freisa grape with Kyè, but has redefined it. The freshness of the grape variety is somewhat reminiscent of Barbera and has a similar structure to the Nebbiolo grape. An explosive wine with dark fruits, violets, minerals, menthol and spices. Incredibly beautiful and multidimensional, the fruit remains primary and the tannins are firm. Elegance all along the line and yet all Freisa, but without the ancient rusticity of this indigenous variety. SUPERIORE.DE

"I have a thing for the Freisa grape and am very excited to be in front of this sample. The 2016 Langhe Freisa Kyè is named after a colloquial phasing of the question "who is it?" (or "chi è?" in Italian), underlining some of the mystery and allure surrounding this native grape. Freisa is a local favorite, but it is relatively unknown outside of Piedmont. This expression from the fine team at G.D. Vajra opens to a nicely saturated color with dark ruby or garnet highlights. The bouquet offers black cherry, dark fruit and accents of spice or white pepper. Primary fruit is the protagonist and so is that pretty freshness. Fruit comes from vineyards planted closest to the winery at the lower part of Bricco delle Viole. The wine is fermented in stainless steel (to lock in those fresh berry aromas) and is aged in large Slavonian oak casks for 26 months." Robert Parker

"The 2016 Langhe Freisa Kyé is a gorgeous wine, but it is going to need at least a few years in bottle to be at its very best. Scorched earth, smoke, tobacco, grilled herbs and black pepper give the Kyé its distinctive brooding personality. As always, the Kyé is a powerful, deep wine, but, as in recent years, the style is a bit more restrained than the more explosive wines in the past. The Kyé emerges from a parcel in the Vajra family's Bricco delle Viole home vineyard." Vinous

Barolo Albe is very multi-layered with tobacco, violet and berry tones and a multi-faceted bouquet. Deep and persistent on the palate with elegant tannin structure and pleasant acid reader, long lasting. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense dark ruby red with a sparkling core. Deep and multi-layered nose of dark blackberries, ripe Amarena cherries, with a slight reverberation of gunpowder. It spreads beautifully on the palate, has well integrated acidity and finely meshed tannin, remains long and fruity in the finale." Falstaff

"Cherry, leather, spice and leafy underbrush flavors walk the line between sweet fruit and bitter tannins. Finds balance in concert with the delicate frame. Fine length." Wine Spectator

"A tribute to local tradition, the 2014 Barolo Albe represents an assembly of fruit from various vineyard plots throughout the area. Winemaking is classic in approach with a 25-day maceration period and aging in large Slavonian oak casks. "Elegant and pure aromas on the nose. Sour cherry, rose petals on the palate with a clean and long finish." Decanter

"The 2015 Barolo Albe is a soft, open-knit wine that will drink well upon release. Bright and lifted, with plenty of red cherry fruit and floral notes, the Albe captures the essence of the Vajra house style nicely. This is a terrific entry-level Barolo, not to mention one of the finest values in Piedmont." VINOUS

"Aromas of mature dark-skinned berries and brown baking spices fill the glass along with a whiff of new leather. Medium bodied and taut, the chewy palate offers dried black cherry, cranberry, blood orange and star anise alongside tightly knit, dusty tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"Pretty, featuring rose, cherry, raspberry and mint flavors, with a touch of mineral. Supple, harmonious and elegant, offering a long finish. The aftertaste is tinged with orange peel and tobacco notes." Wine Spectator

"This Barolo offers a more immediate approach, with lots of dark berry followed by spice, tilled earth and black truffle. The 2015 Barolo Albe pours to a medium dark color and lays out a mid-weight texture, with bright primary fruit that is expertly woven into the wine. It exposes clearly etched veins of acidity and some determinedly firm tannins. Despite the Albe's accessible personality, I recommend that you wait a few more years before popping the cork." The noble wines of G.D. Vajra with their elegance and beauty are a reference for a world-famous royal wine. The winery has been in existence since the 1970s and is located in Vergne, the highest village in the western Barolo area. The Nebbiolo, Dolcetto and Barbera varieties are cultivated there, as well as the Freisa and even the white Riesling grapes, which were important in the past, in strict compliance with fundamental ethical values. The initials of the winery G.D. Vajra stand for Giuseppe Domenico, Aldo Vajra's father, who signed the founding documents of the winery in 1972, as Aldo himself was still a minor. His wife Milena joined the company in the 1980s and together they managed to bring the initially small company with today's top locations Bricco delle Viole, Coste di Vergne, Fossati and La Volta to world fame in Barolo production. In the meantime, Aldo's children Giuseppe, Francesca and Isidoro are entrusted with the work in the company.

The grapes of G.D. Vajra have always been grown close to nature. As they mature only late, the authentic, strong character and multi-faceted wines produced in the estate are of a cool elegance. Its aromatic finesse is brought into balance with a lively but well-proportioned acidity in beautifully modern and functionally designed cellars. The wines are traditionally characterized by a longer maceration and are predominantly aged in Slovenian barrels. In this Piedmontese winery, values such as wholeness and harmony are written in capital letters.

In 2009, the Vajra family, modest, hospitable and not by chance left their vineyard portfolio of the highest quality with the acquisition of the Baudana company in Serralunga d'Alba upgraded again. Here, in the heart of the Barolo area, two top-quality plants thrive in the top locations of Baudana and Cerretta.

The fact that the wines produced in the G.D. Vajra winery with great personal commitment - above all the Bricco delle Viole - are first-class is confirmed again and again by ratings in wine guides such Gambero Rossoas , Robert Parker, Antonio Galloniand also in the Veronelli Guide. "It is a true amusement park of varieties and areas that Aldo and Milena Vajra have built over the years. Few wineries in the Langa region have succeeded in experimenting successfully with less common types of wine such as Riesling Renano, Pinot Nero and Freisa, while maintaining admirable stylistic coherence for the great classics. (...) With the acquisition of the Luigi Baudana company, the Baudana and Cerretta di Serralunga plots are now also part of the family business."Gambero Rosso 2015
