Luigi and Fiorina Baudana ran their small winery in Serralunga d'Alba for three decades, with no heirs to take over the business. Rather than accepting offers from major wine houses for their 'golden mile', in 2008 they set out to find a successor themselves who would preserve their legacy, and to this end visited G.D. Vajra incognito. Aldo Vaira took over the management of the estate, whilst Luigi and Fiorina remained on board; production continues to this day in the same cellar.

The Baudana single vineyard itself covers just one hectare, situated on a west-facing slope north of Parafada and Lazzarito, at an altitude of between 250 and 350 metres, with a south to south-west aspect. To the north lies marl from the Sant'Agata Formation with vines around 50 years old; to the south, calcareous white Lequio soil, which retains water rather than allowing it to run off. Open wooden vats, a long maceration period under the cap of pomace, spontaneous malolactic fermentation in spring and a good three years' ageing in bespoke Slavonian oak botti, ranging from 15 to 25 hectolitres in capacity, define the style.

Ruby red in the glass. Pomegranate, orange peel and fresh blueberries mingle with leather and herbal notes; on the palate, the typical Serralunga character emerges with eucalyptus, blueberry and liquorice, fine-grained tannins and a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"A distinctive, captivating bouquet with notes of wild berries, a hint of smoke and an equally lively hint of eucalyptus. On the palate, the wine is brooding, with pronounced, well-integrated acidity and juicy yet delicate, distinct fruit, so typical of this vintage.
