Coste di Rose, covering one and a half hectares, is the smallest of Vajra's single-vineyard plots, named after the wild roses that once lined the steep slope in Vergne. Situated at an altitude of 310 to 350 metres, this narrow plot lies on sandy, well-drained soil – significantly lighter than the heavier marl of the neighbouring Bricco delle Viole – and brings out the most fragrant and delicate qualities of the Nebbiolo grown here. The steep slope and small area allow only a limited, almost experimental production within the Vajra range. Produced as a single-varietal wine, it matures for around 36 months in large casks – a shorter period than most other crus in the cellar – a deliberate compromise in favour of freshness and aroma rather than power and tannic richness.
A bright, clear ruby red in the glass. The bouquet reveals red fruits and dark berries, along with violets, dried rose petals and a smoky undertone, followed later by a hint of liquorice and a touch of tobacco. On the palate, this Barolo is delicately structured, with lively acidity, delicate yet distinct tannins and a slightly spicy, lingering finish. A Barolo that doesn't set out to impress, but is simply utterly lovely. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark, ripe red berries, interwoven with incense and whole spices that have been slowly roasted – a smoky and aromatic depth that feels ancient yet full of life. Mint and herbs linger subtly in the background before a firm and chewy texture unfolds on the palate, with ripe fruit nestling against the tannins as if it had always been meant to be there. This herbal note carries through to the finish, leaving a long and beautiful aftertaste." Wine Enthusiast
"Floral, as is typical of this winery, with crisp red fruits and rose petals. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, with an abundance of delicate, refined fruit, characterised by chalky, precise yet silky tannins. Ready to drink after sufficient aeration, but will improve with a little bottle ageing." James Suckling
