Sparkling ruby red with an intense aroma of ripe wild berries, concentrated, full-bodied and yet elegant in taste, which ends in a fresh, smooth finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Flavors of crème de cassis, cured tobacco, spicebox and graphite are firmed by chewy tannins in this fresh, medium-bodied red, with a lingering finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Benuara (closed with a glass cork) is made with fruit sourced from the estate's Presti and Pegni vineyards in Monreale, and these sites are identified on the front label. This is a mid-weight blend of 70% Nero d'Avola and 30% Syrah that offers an accessible and forthcoming drinking style. There is a subtle note of sunny ripeness on the bouquet, with a point of cherry marmalade, but the wine ultimately delivers a tight and focused mouthfeel. Most of the wine (80%) is aged in steel, and the remaining percentage goes into large oak casks." Robert Parker

"There is not a touch of overripeness to this nevertheless explosive nose of blackcurrants, mulberries, bark, herbs, even beet, slate, iodine and spices. Medium-bodied with driven acidity, fine tannins and tons of fruit on the finish. So delicious." James Suckling

    • "Alta Mora" Rosso Etna DOC 2016

“Alta Mora” Rosso Etna DOC 2016

From the still young Etna branch of the Cusumano family: bright ruby red, very clear bouquet with pronounced fresh fruit notes of berries, elegant on the palate with medium strength, soft tannin; juicy, persistent and long. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening garnet. Attractive nose with lots of sweet raspberry, strawberry and rhubarb. Round and supple on the palate, unfolds with fine tannin, round and pleasing." Falstaff

"Strawberry, wild rose, citrus and Mediterranean herb aromas take center stage on this fragrant red. Reflecting the nose, the focused, vibrant palate offers pomegranate, blood orange, star anise and hint of espresso alongside firm acidity and fine-grained tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"An elegant, light- to medium-bodied red, this shows fine balance, integrating light, taut tannins with a subtle mesh of ripe raspberry, cranberry and citrus notes, accented by dried thyme and tar-tinged smoke." Wine Spectator

"The Cusumano brothers have a well-respected, internationally distributed brand of Sicilian wines, and in 2013 began this venture on Etna, buying well-known single vineyards and constructing a modern gravity-fed winery. This bottling shows muted raspberry aromas – it’s medium-bodied and silky, but spicy and vigorous, and doesn’t lack concentration or flesh. Fine acidity and length too." Decanter

"This was a challenging vintage on Etna that showed uneven results across different areas of the volcano. The 2016 Etna Rosso defies those difficulties to show steady aromas of wild berry, rose and blue flower. The wine is dry and almost dusty on the finish with generous flinty mineral tones." Robert Parker

"Bright red. Subdued nose hints at red flowers, bright red berries and powdered rocks. Clean, fresh and mineral in the mouth, but with a greater herbal presence than on the nose, finishing long, vibrant and juicy." Vinous

"From the moment you hang your nose in the glass, it’s clear that there are plenty of ripe plums, but not the slightest hint of prune character. However, there is a ton of subtle, herbal nuances in here, too. Powerful and concentrated with plenty of healthy tannins that carry the long, dry finish." James Suckling

    About the winemakers
    Cusumano
    Sicily
    Cusumano

Some connoisseurs of the Italian wine scene say that since the turn of the millennium more has been done in Sicily in terms of quality thinking and management methods than in the 200 years before. The charismatic Diego and his older brother Alberto Cusumano - one economist, the other oenologist - played a not inconsiderable role in this recently accelerating development. The family winery in Partinico near Palermo, which was once started as a producer of must concentrates and, after a reorientation, is now managed with great passion by its siblings, has quickly conquered the world market with more than two dozen of its own labels and around three million bottles per year despite Sicily's very poor financial situation. America and Germany are the most important export countries. When Diego presented himself for the first time in 2001 at the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona with four of his own creations, he was immediately presented with the "Tre Bicchieri" of the Italian wine guideGambero Rosso.

The rise of the Cusumano winery, which continues to this day, was accompanied by a Sicilian wine revolution: Since then, young wine growers have not only been focusing on better quality, but also offering a home to the island's old grape varieties. After seven years of preparation, Alberto and Diego have succeeded in developing part of Sicily's untapped potential in four wineries spread across the island with a total of 502 hectares of cultivated land. In the south-east of the island, the ancient Sicilian grape variety Nero d’Avola. In Ficuzza near Corleone, with 189 hectares of vineyards the largest cultivation area of Cusumano, the climate is influenced by high temperature fluctuations between day and night at an altitude of 800 metres.

The Cusumano brothers differ from many other winegrowers on the island in that they only use their own grapes for their production. This independence gives them the freedom to experiment. On the newly added Alta Mora estate, the native grape varieties Nerello Mascalese (red) and Carricante (white) grow in the Alberello system on the northern slopes of Mount Etna on sand, lava, ash and basalt at an altitude of 600 to 1000 metres. The grapes are carefully selected and pressed in an underground cellar with walls of lava stone. The Guardiola vineyard, which also belongs to the estate, is one of the Grand Crus of Etna. The two brothers have very high expectations of the newly planted vines: From 2016, the vines will produce the grapes for one of the best red wines in the "mountain of fire" deliver.

Although the grapes of the Alta Mora winery grow on the slopes of a volcano that is still active, the wines are not characterised by excessive southern heat, strength and opulence. The affordable fresh, fruity and mineral drops are rather rich in finesse and of almost Burgundian cool elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"The elite winery of Alberto and Diego Cusumano has succeeded with a message of elegance and modernity in establishing itself on the international market in just a few years. The decisive factor was a clear, dynamic and forward-looking strategy.“Gambero Rosso
