Here comes one of the most beautiful interpretations of the white grape variety Carricante. Fresh, dynamic wine from Etna with a multi-faceted aroma of citrus, white peach, yeast and smoke. Cool grapefruit, taut acidity and impressive mineral hints in the dry finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, light straw yellow. Opens with delicate honey notes, some banana, flint in the background. Juicy and round in the attack and course, fine citrus fruit, clear in the final." Falstaff

"Delicately scented, this has aromas of yellow spring wildflower and white stone fruit. Light bodied and racy, the palate offers Meyer lemon, yellow apple and saline alongside crisp acidity that lends tension." Wine Enthusiast

"A dense white with cooked apple and papaya and some floral and dried-peach undertones. It's full-bodied with gorgeous fruit and intensity. Really flavorful with a pleasing, chalky and minerally undertone and texture." James Suckling

"The 2019 Alta Mora Etna Bianco sends up aromas of musky dried peach, wax, raw almonds and wet stone. Its soft textures envelop the palate with a mix of nectarine and young mango offset by saline-minerality and bright acids. This is persistent and structured yet crisp and savory, resonating on citrus-tinged pit fruits and exotic spices. The 2019 is showing great already, but a year or two of cellaring should help to further smooth out the expression." Vinous

    • "Jalé" Chardonnay Sicilia DOC 2019

      “Jalé" Chardonnay Sicilia DOC 2019

A modern, single-varietal Chardonnay that does not deny its terroir with an almost Burgundian style. Elegant, complex and with a lot of character, the aromatically fragrant Jalé shows itself with a balanced, long taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Jale Chardonnay presents an incredibly pretty bouquet of chamomile, a dusting of confectioner's spice, pear and vanilla bean. It's silky in feel, while leaning more toward the savory spectrum, as salty minerals and tart orchard fruits are briskly carried across a core of bright acidity. While a bit understated through the close, it's crisp and clean. Hints of ginger and spice slowly fade away." Vinous

Open nose with hints of beeswax, yellow flowers, acacia, red apple and green pepper. Very refreshing on the palate, low acidity, fine saltiness and a wonderful fruit exoticism. In the deep finish, herbal spice and expansive fruit with beautiful freshness - definitely aerate. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Salealto mixes both savory and sweet, combining notes of candied ginger, white pepper, caraway and melon. It's silky and deeply textural, as ripe orchard fruits and minerals cascade across a core of brisk acids, giving way to hints of sage toward the close. Beguilingly fruity Noà from Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, equipped with a delicious bouquet of ripe red fruits, spices and cocoa as well as the fresh taste with silky soft tannin and a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"I love the herbal complexity on the nose here with dried bay leaf, Thai basil, blueberries and licorice. Rich and nicely round on the palate, but with a delicate streak of acidity and a tangy finish." James Suckling

"Cooling mint meets sweet tobacco, black currants and hints of dark chocolate as the 2016 Noà slowly comes to life in the glass. This is silky in texture with medium-bodied weight, ushering in a polished display of blackberry and plum, as a mix of minerals and sweet tannins creates a more structured feel toward the close. It tapers off long but also youthfully monolithic to hints of balsamic spice." Vinous

"This wine pours from the bottle with an inky black appearance and an intense concentration of aromas and flavors. The Cusumano brothers have hit the bull's-eye with this beautiful wine in terms of its power, complexity and smooth integration. The bouquet starts off with Morello cherry, dried blackberry, spice and bitter chocolate. As the wine opens in the glass, it unleashes granite, smoke and licorice. • "Sagana" Nero d'Avola Sicilia DOC 2017

“Sagana” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2017

Sagana, an impressively varietal and at the same time very fresh Nero d'Avola of dark colour, intensely scented of sour cherries, undergrowth, iodine and graphite. Very powerful and full-bodied on the palate, velvety tannins and a long, slightly nutty finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep dark garnet with violet reflections. Distinctly fragrant on juicy blueberry, plum and fine pralines, in addition freshly roasted coffee, tobacco in the background. Gripping in the mouth, shows a lot of intensity, appears compact and a bit pithy in the tannin, finishes powerfully on rich fruit nuances." Falstaff

"The 2017 Nero d'Avola Sàgana pulls you close with a mix of black currants, brown spice, tobacco and crushed rocks. It's soft in texture, presenting a pure and savory display of black fruit and inner herbal notes, all lifted by salty acids and minerals. Grippy tannins linger through the purple-tinged finale, as this tapers off lightly structured yet long, resonating on wild berries and hints of mocha and tar. Color me impressed. Give the Sagana another year in the cellar, and then reap the rewards." Vinous

"A red with plenty of blackberry, chocolate, some wet earth and bark, as well as black-tea undertones. It's full-bodied with juicy fruit and a savory finish. Give it a little time." James Suckling

    • "Alta Mora Feudo di Mezzo" Rosso Etna DOC 2015

“Alta Mora Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2015

The second vintage of the red crus from Cusumano's still young Alta Mora family from Etna is a deep dark red, single-varietal Nerello. Elegant bouquet with aromas of berries and herbs, on the palate lean, juicy and very finesse with silky tannins and fine acidity, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Luminous medium dark red. Lovely purity of red cherry and raspberry fruit with a strong dusting of minerals and minty herbs on the nose and in the mouth. Finishes long and piercing but polished, with a nicely lingering floral quality. A lovely wine." Vinous

"A beautiful Etna red that shows raspberry tea, lilacs, rose petals and cherry blossom. Medium in body but deep in flavors that range from herbs to orange peel and are supported by a firm yet velvety and fine-tannined structure." James Suckling

"The Cusumano brothers have successfully given voice to this top-tier Etna red. The 2015 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is a direct and linear expression with just enough fruity softness and roundness to form a solid center of gravity and general complexity. This pure Nerello Mascalese ages in 30- and 50-hectoliter botte for 18 months. The wine delivers delicate berry aromas with crushed stone, spice, tar and campfire ash playing softly as background music. Vines planted in the Feudo di Mezzo Contrada are more than 100 years old. A mere 5,000 bottles were made." Robert Parker

    • "Alta Mora Guardiola" Rosso Etna DOC 2015

“Alta Mora Guardiola” Rosso Etna DOC 2015

Guardiola, a cru from Nerello Mascalese, shows the typical elegant aroma from volcanic soils. Fine raspberry fruit, gentle acidity and silky tannins, full and ripe but never too full-bodied. A modern drop from traditional vine. SUPERIORE.DE

"A savory red, with hints of smoky bacon fat and spice accenting the cherry coulis, dried sage and rose hip flavors. Balanced, featuring creamy tannins on the well-spiced, fresh finish. Drink now through 2027." Wine Spectator

"Lively bright red-ruby. Red and black fruit macerated in alcohol, flint, botanical herbs and a whiff of alcohol on the opulent nose. Then ripe and broad in the mouth too, with rich, dense flavors and a mouthcoating texture with similar aromas. Finishes long and savory." Vinous

"Bilberries, fruit tea, citrus, oranges, fresh raspberries, orange blossom, nectarines and wild strawberries. So Burgundian on the palate, the fine and silky tannins encasing beautiful, energetic and exciting red fruit. Powerful acidity closes this off nicely. So elegant." James Suckling

"From a warm and sun-soaked vintage, the 2015 Etna Rosso Guardiola (made with 100% Nerello Mascalese) shows lots of fruit richness with black currant, dried cherry and dark plum. This is a wine of substantial fiber and succulence. The mouthfeel is layered and rich with softly integrated tannins and firm structure at the back. The fruit is concentrated and dense. One reason is because it is harvested from precious 120-year-old vines. Only 5,310 bottles were released." Robert Parker

    About the winemakersCusumanoSicily
    Cusumano

Some connoisseurs of the Italian wine scene say that since the turn of the millennium more has been done in Sicily in terms of quality thinking and management methods than in the 200 years before. The charismatic Diego and his older brother Alberto Cusumano - one economist, the other oenologist - played a not inconsiderable role in this recently accelerating development. The family winery in Partinico near Palermo, which was once started as a producer of must concentrates and, after a reorientation, is now managed with great passion by its siblings, has quickly conquered the world market with more than two dozen of its own labels and around three million bottles per year despite Sicily's very poor financial situation. America and Germany are the most important export countries. When Diego presented himself for the first time in 2001 at the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona with four of his own creations, he was immediately presented with the "Tre Bicchieri" of the Italian wine guideGambero Rosso.

The rise of the Cusumano winery, which continues to this day, was accompanied by a Sicilian wine revolution: Since then, young wine growers have not only been focusing on better quality, but also offering a home to the island's old grape varieties. After seven years of preparation, Alberto and Diego have succeeded in developing part of Sicily's untapped potential in four wineries spread across the island with a total of 502 hectares of cultivated land. In the south-east of the island, the ancient Sicilian grape variety Nero d’Avola. In Ficuzza near Corleone, with 189 hectares of vineyards the largest cultivation area of Cusumano, the climate is influenced by high temperature fluctuations between day and night at an altitude of 800 metres.

The Cusumano brothers differ from many other winegrowers on the island in that they only use their own grapes for their production. This independence gives them the freedom to experiment. On the newly added Alta Mora estate, the native grape varieties Nerello Mascalese (red) and Carricante (white) grow in the Alberello system on the northern slopes of Mount Etna on sand, lava, ash and basalt at an altitude of 600 to 1000 metres. The grapes are carefully selected and pressed in an underground cellar with walls of lava stone. The Guardiola vineyard, which also belongs to the estate, is one of the Grand Crus of Etna. The two brothers have very high expectations of the newly planted vines: From 2016, the vines will produce the grapes for one of the best red wines in the "mountain of fire" deliver.

Although the grapes of the Alta Mora winery grow on the slopes of a volcano that is still active, the wines are not characterised by excessive southern heat, strength and opulence. The affordable fresh, fruity and mineral drops are rather rich in finesse and of almost Burgundian cool elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"The elite winery of Alberto and Diego Cusumano has succeeded with a message of elegance and modernity in establishing itself on the international market in just a few years. The decisive factor was a clear, dynamic and forward-looking strategy.“Gambero Rosso
