“Shamaris” Grillo Sicilia DOC 2022
Bright straw yellow. This single-varietal Grillo smells of citrus, melon and fine herbs. On the palate, a present, fresh fruit, very juicy and with a mineral-salty vein in the finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Shamaris, a varietal Grillo, is coy in the glass, mixing crushed rocks with lime zest hints. It's more assertive on the palate, with a buzz of citrus-tinged acidity and ripe orchard fruits further enlivened by juicy acidity. Mixing ginger with tart green apple, this tapers off spicy, with a closing mineral tinge." Vinous
"Intense light gold with sparkling reflex. Fragrant nose of juicy grapefruit and orange blossom, with a fine salt scent, clearly reminiscent of pink peach. Opens softly and warmly on the palate, with radiant yellow fruit, finely carried by its acidity, animating in the finish with a delicate bitterness." Falstaff

“Alta Mora” Bianco Etna DOC 2021
Here comes one of the most beautiful interpretations of the white grape variety Carricante. Fresh, dynamic wine from Etna with a multi-faceted aroma of citrus, white peach, yeast, flint and smoke. Cool grapefruit, taut acidity and impressive mineral hints in the dry finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Etna Bianco opens with a whiff of crushed stones and raw almonds, giving way to crushed green apples. It soothes with its round, enveloping textures. Zesty acidity and salty mineral tones add a reverberation of tension. It leaves a subtle tart tinge of sour melon while finishing pleasantly fresh and saline." Vinous
"Bright straw yellow with golden reflections. In the nose of tropical fruits, orange peel, ripe apple and some fumé. On the palate very mineral, fresh and salty, animates to drink, balanced, long final." Falstaff
"A restrained nose with notes of tar and fresh pavement, then lemons and limes, opens to a palate bright with citrus but also stony and peppery, before a long finish carried by powerful acidity." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2021 Etna Bianco is fresh and beautifully balanced with white peach and grapefruit contrasted with minerals and volcanic ash. This crisp white wine proves very drinkable and enjoyable thanks to the almost salty finish that would go well with fried prawns or Thai spring rolls. It matures on the fine lees for six months. The fruit comes from three different contrade: Arrigo (in Linguaglossa), Verzella and Pietramarina." Wine Advocate
"It has aromas of grilled pineapple, papaya and chamomile with distinct smoky and ashy undertones. Medium-bodied with bright acidity. Spicy, with fantastic flint and smoke character." James Suckling

“Jalé" Chardonnay Terre Siciliane IGT 2021
A modern, single-varietal Chardonnay that does not deny its terroir with an almost Burgundian style. Elegant, complex and with a lot of character, the aromatically fragrant Jalé shows itself with a balanced, long taste. SUPERIORE.DE
"On the nose of this wine, baked vanilla notes bring out aromas of baked pears, apples and quince, with nutty and grassy tones echoing the savoury. The palate is unexpectedly lively and light, with slices of lemon-lime and green apple that balance the acidity of the citrus with the comforting warmth of the cooked fruit." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2021 Jalé lifts from the glass with a tropical blend of young mango, kiwi and vanilla bean. It's silky smooth with ripe orchard fruits and sweet inner florals, all nicely balanced by saline-tinged acidity. This leaves rich custard and almond paste through the long and slightly confectionary finale, yet in the end, it tapers off fresh, mixing salty minerals with lime." Vinous

“Salealto” Bianco Terre Siciliane IGT 2019
Salealto consists of equal parts Insolia, Zibibbo and Grillo and was aged for about 10 months on the fine lees in stainless steel. Strong golden yellow with green reflections. Open nose with hints of beeswax, yellow flowers, acacia, red apple and green pepper. Very refreshing on the palate, low acidity, fine saltiness and a wonderful fruit exoticism. In the deep finish, herbal spice and expansive fruit with beautiful freshness - definitely aerate. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Salealto takes its time opening in the glass, as nuances of ginger-spiced apples, hints of tangerine and a zest of lime form its understated yet incredibly pretty bouquet. This impresses with its silky textures offset by saline-tinged acid and mineral tones that give way to savory spices and orchard fruits. The 2019 tapers off surprisingly fresh yet long, leaving hints of tangerine and yellow curry. This is so unique yet also equally enjoyable." Vinous
"Lemon-cream pie with some straw and lime undertones on the nose. Honeysuckle flowers, too. It’s full-bodied with tangy and focused acidity and a long, flavorful finish. So much lemon zest and cream at the finish." James Suckling
"A three-way blend of Inzolia, Zibibbo and Grillo from vineyards in the area of Piana degli Albanesi near Palermo, grown at altitudes of between 700 and 800 metres. A short maceration is followed by fermentation in stainless steel. The various components are blended and matured for around 10 months on the lees, followed by further time in bottle. Rounded yet light on its feet, this is very pure in its vivid fruits and clean acidity. Fragrant floral notes are accompanied by scents and flavours of white peach, yellow plum, apricot skin and orange peel. Intense and delicious." Decanter

“Sagana” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2017
Sagana, an impressively varietal and at the same time very fresh Nero d'Avola of dark colour, intensely scented of sour cherries, undergrowth, iodine and graphite. Very powerful and full-bodied on the palate, velvety tannins and a long, slightly nutty finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Deep dark garnet with violet reflections. Distinctly fragrant on juicy blueberry, plum and fine pralines, in addition freshly roasted coffee, tobacco in the background. Gripping in the mouth, shows a lot of intensity, appears compact and a bit pithy in the tannin, finishes powerfully on rich fruit nuances." Falstaff
"The 2017 Nero d'Avola Sàgana pulls you close with a mix of black currants, brown spice, tobacco and crushed rocks. It’s soft in texture, presenting a pure and savory display of black fruit and inner herbal notes, all lifted by salty acids and minerals. Grippy tannins linger through the purple-tinged finale, as this tapers off lightly structured yet long, resonating on wild berries and hints of mocha and tar. Color me impressed. Give the Sagana another year in the cellar, and then reap the rewards." Vinous
"This wine sources its fruit from a site identified on the front label: the Vigneto del Torrone Bianco in the Tenuta San Giacomo. A pure expression of Nero d'Avola, the Cusumano 2017 Sicilia Sàgana is a richly concentrated and powerful wine. The bouquet is heartily enriched with blackberry preserves and cherry confit, and the wine is soft and luscious to touch. The length is moderate, even a bit clipped, in this hot vintage that front-loads most of its fruit weight and volume. Black olive tapenade appears on the finish." Wine Advocate
"A red with plenty of blackberry, chocolate, some wet earth and bark, as well as black-tea undertones. It’s full-bodied with juicy fruit and a savory finish. Give it a little time." James Suckling

“Noà" Rosso Sicilia DOC 2017
Beguilingly fruity Noà from Nero d'Avola, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, equipped with a delicious bouquet of ripe red fruits, spices and cocoa as well as the fresh taste with silky soft tannin and a long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"This fresh red leads with tar and black licorice aromas on the nose that transition to the palate, accenting ripe black currant, plump cherry, cedar and black tea flavors. Dark in hue and creamy in texture, with sleek tannins well-meshed to a full-bodied frame." Wine Spectator
"The 2017 Noà bursts from the glass with a clash of ashy crushed rocks, flint, grilled sage and blackberry preserves. This is elegant and silky in feel with medium-bodied weight, as a core of tart wild berries complemented by sour citrus and mineral tones adds tension toward the close. It finishes structured and long, pinching at the senses with grippy tannins, as a salty flourish and hints of plum skin linger incredibly long. The 2017 Noà is a beast in need of taming; that said, it should be fun to follow over the next five to eight years." Vinous
"A rich, round red with dark berries and some milk-chocolate and orange-peel undertones. It’s full and flavorful with lots going on." James Suckling

“Alta Mora Guardiola” Rosso Etna DOC 2016
Guardiola, a cru from Nerello Mascalese, shows the typical elegant aromatics from volcanic soils. Fine raspberry fruit, gentle acidity and silky tannins, full and ripe, but never too full. A modern drop from a traditional vine. SUPERIORE.DE
"An appealing note of ripe black raspberry is pure and slightly juicy, leading the way in this grippy, mineral red. It is complex with accents of liquorice, sage, orange peel and a smoky hint of hot iron. Very elegant on the finish, where the dense tannins take over, recommending short-term cellaring or decanting." Wine Spectator
"Aromas of fragrant purple flowers, undergrowth, Mediterranean scrub and fragrant spices dominate the nose. Focused and elegantly structured, the vibrant palate shows ripe black cherry, raspberry, liquorice and a touch of salt alongside tightly wound, fine-grained tannins that hold the finish." Wine Enthusiast
"Smoked meat, volcanic ash, liquorice and wild cherries. It is medium-bodied with fine, silky tannins. Lovely minerality with spices, dried herbs and berries on the palate. Leather and dust on the finish." James Suckling
"In 2016, only 3,000 bottles were produced of this 100% Nerello Mascalese, which comes from vines in the Contrada Guardiola in the north of Mount Etna at an altitude of about 800 m with an average age of 150 years. The fruit is macerated for 18-21 days and then gently pressed. Malolactic fermentation takes place in barrel, followed by 18 months of ageing in 30 and 50 hL barrels. Taut and tannic, it shows a muscular frame combined with fragrant red cherry, liquorice, hints of black cherry and terracotta and a stony, mineral finish. Very much potential." Decanter
"Alta Mora reveals its high-value cards with this wine. The 2016 Etna Rosso Guardiola is a carefully manicured wine from an excellent growing site and a classic vintage. It has benefited from long bottle age, and that extra time in glass has proven fundamental for the balance and fruit integrity displayed here. It shows dried cherry and redcurrant with dusty tannins and lasting notes of campfire ash. The mouthfeel ends on a dry note. Ultimately, the palate feels more mature than the bouquet does. Alta Mora farms three hectares in Contrada Guardiola with ancient alberello (or bush-trained) pre-phylloxera vines. Production is limited to 4,000 bottles." Wine Advocate
"Good, full, bright red. Captivating aromas of red cherries, raspberries, quinine, powdered stones and violets. Big, dense and mineral with no slight sweetness to the rich ripe but refined red fruits and stony flavours. Finishes very long with a layered personality, but this young, still brooding wine needs time." Vinous

“Alta Mora Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2016
The third vintage of the red crus from Cusumano's still young Alta Mora family from Etna is a deep dark red, single-varietal Nerello. Elegant bouquet with aromas of berries and herbs, on the palate lean, juicy and very finesse with silky tannins and fine acidity, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright shining ruby red. Intense nose of raspberries, cherries and Mediterranean herbs as well as a little smoky in the back. Very fresh and juicy on the palate with very appealing tannins and pleasant drinking flow." Falstaff
"A fresh, focused red, with brambly herb accenting the wild cherry and red currant fruit flavors. It's light- to medium-bodied, with a fine frame of light, snappy tannins and a subtle underpinning of tarry smoke and spice lingering on the finish." Wine Spectator
"Elegant and savory, this focused red has aromas of wild berry, blue flower, underbrush and dark spice. The radiant palate has great energy, delivering juicy Morello cherry, licorice and tobacco alongside lithe, fine-grained tannins that give it a rather drying finish. Bright acidity keeps it well balanced." Wine Enthusiast
"Complex aromas of smoke, bramble and savory herbs, followed by cloves and dried flowers. This is an elegant, medium-bodied red with ultra fine tannins and red-tea notes. Firm and lightly austere. Mouthwatering finish." James Suckling
"The Alta Mora 2016 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is a wine of unsuspecting power and intensity. The momentum takes a moment to build, but sure enough, this wine fills the balloon of your glass with ripe cherry, cassis, blue flower and rusty nail aromas. It also shows a sanguine or mineral side with iron ore and pencil shavings. Made with fruit from 90- to 100-year-old vines, the wine hits the palate in a sharp and decisive manner, thanks to the tannins and the wine's focused style. A tasting party with just a few slices of caciocavallo cheese will be huge success with this bottle." Wine Advocate

“Alta Mora Guardiola” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Guardiola, a cru from Nerello Mascalese, shows the typical elegant aromatics from volcanic soils. Fine raspberry fruit, gentle acidity and silky tannins, full and ripe, but never too full. A modern drop from a traditional vine. SUPERIORE.DE
"Lots of ripe fruit with cooked plums, figs and bark. Also some mahogany and Chinese spice box. It's full-bodied with firm, juicy tannins and a hint of wood and spice on the finish." James Suckling
"The nose of this Etna rosso shows stones, fresh mixed berries and new leather shoes, while the juicy but savoury palate has notes of grilled meat, olives and crushed stones before wild strawberries and raspberries creep in. The rounded juiciness is contrasted by a backbone of acidity that keeps the finish dynamic." Wine Enthusiast
"Crushed stones, spicy herbs, dusty roses, dried cherries, hints of blood orange and camphor - all these are found when the 2017 Rosso Guardiola whisks the taster away to the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. It is surprisingly juicy and cool on the palate, with a stimulating acidity that counteracts the intense wave of dark red fruit that washes over the palate. A layer of grippy tannins and a balancing inner sweetness allow the 2017 to finish remarkably long, leaving violet flowers and mineral tones that linger for up to a minute. Alta Mora has captured the essence of Guardiola, though intensified by the warm vintage." Vinous

Some connoisseurs of the Italian wine scene say that since the turn of the millennium more has been done in Sicily in terms of quality thinking and management methods than in the 200 years before. The charismatic Diego and his older brother Alberto Cusumano - one economist, the other oenologist - played a not inconsiderable role in this recently accelerating development. The family winery in Partinico near Palermo, which was once started as a producer of must concentrates and, after a reorientation, is now managed with great passion by its siblings, has quickly conquered the world market with more than two dozen of its own labels and around three million bottles per year despite Sicily's very poor financial situation. America and Germany are the most important export countries. When Diego presented himself for the first time in 2001 at the Vinitaly wine fair in Verona with four of his own creations, he was immediately presented with the "Tre Bicchieri" of the Italian wine guideGambero Rosso.
The rise of the Cusumano winery, which continues to this day, was accompanied by a Sicilian wine revolution: Since then, young wine growers have not only been focusing on better quality, but also offering a home to the island's old grape varieties. After seven years of preparation, Alberto and Diego have succeeded in developing part of Sicily's untapped potential in four wineries spread across the island with a total of 502 hectares of cultivated land. In the south-east of the island, the ancient Sicilian grape variety Nero d’Avola. In Ficuzza near Corleone, with 189 hectares of vineyards the largest cultivation area of Cusumano, the climate is influenced by high temperature fluctuations between day and night at an altitude of 800 metres.
The Cusumano brothers differ from many other winegrowers on the island in that they only use their own grapes for their production. This independence gives them the freedom to experiment. On the newly added Alta Mora estate, the native grape varieties Nerello Mascalese (red) and Carricante (white) grow in the Alberello system on the northern slopes of Mount Etna on sand, lava, ash and basalt at an altitude of 600 to 1000 metres. The grapes are carefully selected and pressed in an underground cellar with walls of lava stone. The Guardiola vineyard, which also belongs to the estate, is one of the Grand Crus of Etna. The two brothers have very high expectations of the newly planted vines: From 2016, the vines will produce the grapes for one of the best red wines in the "mountain of fire" deliver.
Although the grapes of the Alta Mora winery grow on the slopes of a volcano that is still active, the wines are not characterised by excessive southern heat, strength and opulence. The affordable fresh, fruity and mineral drops are rather rich in finesse and of almost Burgundian cool elegance. SUPERIORE.DE
