Rosato di Toscana IGT 2020 (BIO)

The grapes of this 100% Merlot come from a single vineyard of Brancaia's Maremma-Dependance, certified organic since 2020. Three months of aging on the fine yeast results in a polished, mineral rosato of the special class. Bright salmon pink, fragrance of floral notes and watermelon, ends precisely and long with a fresh, well-dosed acidity and fine melting. SUPERIORE.DE

    • Cabernet Sauvignon "No. 2" Toscana IGT 2018

Cabernet Sauvignon “No. 2” Toscana IGT 2018

This is the second vintage of the pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Barbara Widmer's Maremma-Dependance. Strong, deep-dark ruby red, in the nose animating smell of dark berries, coffee, cocoa, eucalyptus and spices. In the drink then notes of green paprika, fine sweetness and juiciness. The tannins are polished and prepare the way into a long, silky finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Brancaia 2018 Maremma Toscana Brancaia N. 2 (a pure Cabernet Sauvignon) sees its fruit sourced from coastal Tuscany, and you can taste that extra ripeness and sun-kissed fruit as a result. The bouquet opens quickly to dark cherry and blackberry, dried cassis and sweet spice. You get a lot of Tuscan sunshine for your buck, and it's worth every last cent, especially if you are enjoying this well-priced wine in a cool, northern climate with some grilled sausage and onions." • "Ilatraia" Rosso Maremma IGT 2015

      “Ilatraia” Rosso Maremma IGT 2015

Ilatraia was born in 2002 and is a true Supertuscan from international grape varieties that ripen optimally in the dry summers of the Maremma, even without irrigation.

Deep dark ruby. Opulent nose of red berries, pleasant smoky note and fine herbal spice. On the palate opulent and round, the fine tannins give the wine a delicate but certain structure and the necessary seriousness until the long, soft finish. The well integrated wood and the fruit of the Cabernet grape find an exciting symbiosis here in a very harmonious way with the rather strict and taut Petit Verdot style. The wine gets better with every edition and 2015 was a perfect year with an optimal climate and ideal ripening point of the grapes. SUPERIORE.DE

"Velvety, rich ruby violet. Very clear, fruity nose, with notes of blueberry, dark currant and forest raspberry. Round and supple at the base, opens with fine-meshed tannin, polished and surprisingly fresh, with an aftertaste of sweet enamel." Falstaff

"The 2015 Ilatraia is a dark, fleshy wine. Blackberry jam, espresso, grilled herbs, menthol, licorice and lavender infuse this fleshy, wonderfully resonant Maremma blend. Powerful and racy in the glass, the 2015 offers plenty of near and medium-term appeal. Depth and a real sense of gravitas infuse this succulent red from the Tuscan coast."Antonio Galloni

"The 2015 Ilatraia is a drop-dead gorgeous blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc with all fruit coming from Brancaia's Maremma vineyards along the Tuscan coast. This warm vintage has shaped an exuberant and intense red wine that hits the palate with lavish richness. The complex bouquet is composed of dark fruit elements that are contrasted seamlessly against spice, sweet tobacco and campfire ash. Yet the mouthfeel is never too heavy or overextracted. There's a lot to enjoy here." Robert Parker

"Aromas of black licorice and blackberry. Blueberry, too. This is so complex. Full body, extremely silky and polished with lovely tannins. Deep and long. It seems powerful and rich yet ends so balanced and refined. A blend of cabernet sauvignon, petit verdot and cabernet franc." James Suckling

      “Ilatraia” Rosso Maremma IGT 2016

Deep dark ruby. Opulent nose of red berries, pleasant smoke note and fine herbal spice. Opulent and round on the palate, the fine tannins give the wine a delicate but determined framework and the necessary seriousness until the long, soft finish. The well-integrated wood and the fruit of the Cabernet grape find an exciting symbiosis here in a very harmonious way with the rather strict and tight Petit Verdot style. The wine is getting better with every edition and 2016 was an almost perfect year with optimal climate and ideal ripening point of the grapes. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, deep ruby red. Opened with lots of crisp, present berry fruit, some cassis, raspberry and goji berries. Powerful, gripping tannin on the palate, lots of ripe fruit, some rough wood in the final." Falstaff

"This blend of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc features aromas of black-skinned berry, toasted hazelnut and underbrush. The structured palate delivers blackberry jam, toasted oak, licorice and tobacco alongside polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2016 Ilatraia is laced with blackberry jam, grilled herbs, leather, bittersweet chocolate, espresso, smoke and menthol. Unctuous on the palate, with tremendous richness, Ilatraia is a decidedly heady, concentrated wine. All of the richness, power and breadth of Maremma come through loud and clear in this bold, beautifully intense Tuscan red." Vinous

"This is really impressive with roasted blackberries, thyme, forest floor, pine needles, conifer, iodine, mint and light vanilla. Powerful and muscular, but agile and floral, this sweeps through decadent layers of dark fruit, while keeping the linear acidity constantly in view. Long and very structured on the finish." James Suckling

"A blend of 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Ilatraia is a terrific, full-bodied expression from Tuscany. If you love this combination of full-throttle grapes, I suggest you try this rendition. It tends to be more delicate and nuanced at the edges compared to a similar blend from a New World wine region, like say, California. The wine is contoured and full but never heavy. Indeed, the aromas of blackberry, spice and tar remain surprisingly fresh and bright. This is a big wine to be sure, but there is a lot of tonic energy packed tight within." Robert Parker

    • "Ilatraia" Rosso Maremma IGT 2016 <br>Double-MAGNUM in OWC

“Ilatraia” Rosso Maremma IGT 2016 · Double-MAGNUM in OWC

“Il Blu” Rosso Toscana IGT 2017 · Double-MAGNUM in OWC

Every year Barbara Widmer proves anew how to make a dense, intense red that is nevertheless balanced, elegant and refined. Rich, unfathomable ruby red. Explosive aromas of black cherries and blackberries on the nose. The texture is wonderfully balanced, on the palate Il Blu 2017 presents itself fresh, persistently powerful and with wonderfully articulated tannins. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fleshy, dark ruby purple. Opens with spicy notes, reminiscent of conifers, then licorice and lots of blueberries. Polished and fine in approach and course, shows a lot of present, rich fruit, fine-meshed tannin, firm pressure in the final." Falstaff

"Blackberries, blueberries and stone on the nose. Some mineral and moss, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Plenty of blue fruit at the end. Give it time to come together. But very pretty." James Suckling

"Packaged in its distinctive blue label, the Brancaia 2017 Il Blu is a blend of mostly Merlot, Sangiovese and a smaller percent of Cabernet Sauvignon. It offers power, structure and firmness spread out over a medium to full-bodied frame. The wine exhibits a dark and concentrated color and opens to rich aromas of dried cherry, blackberry, tilled earth, candied orange and iron ore." Robert Parker

"The 2017 Il Blu is fabulous. Inky, vibrant and beautifully layered in the glass, the 2017 marries richness with vibrancy, showing remarkable balance and so much class. Lavender, spice, chocolate, menthol and licorice are all woven into a core of inky blue/purplish fruit. Despite the warm, hot growing season, in 2017 Il Blu retains a mid-weight personality as well as a good deal of energy." Vinous

    About the winemakersBrancaiaTuscany | Chianti
    Brancaia

Il Blu occupies a firm place among the top wines of Italy and is already considered a classic by many wine lovers. The noble drop comes from the Casa Brancaia in Castellina. "My parents went on holiday to Tuscany in 1981, fell in love with the area, the people and of course with the good food and delicious wine. So they looked for a holiday home - and bought Brancaia, including the vines," says Barbara Widmer, the Swiss woman who actually wanted to become an architect but then decided to study oenology and in 1998 took over her parents' now highly successful winery.

The career changers from Zurich managed to win first place at a major Chianti Classico tasting after only two years of "hobby wine production". And this in not exactly easy times. The rapid initial success made people want to do more and so a steady expansion of activities developed. In 1989 the Widmer couple acquired the Poppi winery in Radda, which has since become the family estate. And nine years later the third estate was founded, in the Morellino di Scansano wine growing area in the Maremma near Grosseto. There the Supertuscan "Ilatraia" is pressed from the idiosyncratic composition with 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Petit Verdot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Since 1998, Barbara Widmer has been responsible for the wine production and the vineyards as head and leading oenologist. She is supported by the cellar masters Amar Amarouche (in the Maremma) and Fabrizio Benedetti (in the Chianti area) and the excellent oenologist Carlo Ferrini as advisor.

Environmental protection is a priority at Brancaia. Barbara Widmer works according to the guidelines of integrated production. The vineyards are treated with sustainable care, and individual sick or dead vines are manually replanted and nurtured until the roots are strong enough. With the 2019 vintage, the conversion to organic cultivation is completed and all wines are certified organic from this vintage onwards.

Brancaia has long since joined the top group of Tuscan producers. The wines are always at the top of the list at tastings and are highly praised by international wine critics. The elegant wines are matured in two cellars (Chianti Classico and Maremma), which were built according to the most modern principles, in modern containers. New cement and steel fermenters, up to French barriques and tonneaux. Never perceptible, purity, fruit and elegance are always in the foreground.

The Tuscany parade variety Sangiovese is dominant in the Chianti Classico Riserva and Chianti Classico, but also plays a significant role in Il Blu and the base wine Tre, whose grapes come from all three wineries. SUPERIORE.DE
