Etna Rosato DOC 2022
Fresh rosato that smells of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness, a fine mineral note and, last but not least, a winning drinkability. SUPERIORE.DE
"A pale and perfumed rosé with notes of cherry blossom, peaches, rose hips and strawberries. Medium-bodied, creamy and delicate yet with plenty of flavor and a dry and delicious finish." James Suckling
"The Cottanera 2022 Etna Rosato is beautiful in the glass, with pink, gold and copper highlights. The wine's color is achieved with just three or four hours of skin contact and finishes in steel. Fruit for this wine comes from a vineyard site that is specifically farmed to make rosé. The bouquet leans toward floral aromas at the front and fruity aromas at the back. It shows balance and precision with a mineral-driven finish. This is one of my favorite Italian rosés, especially at this price point." Wine Advocate

“Contrada Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Brilliant ruby red. Diciasette Salme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit aromas, some flint and Cuban cigar tobacco. On the palate balanced, elegant, full-bodied and salty fresh. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Brilliant ruby red. In the nose, mustard seeds, dried rose petals, raspberries, ripe cherries and delicately resinous tones, reminiscent of plaster in the aftertaste. Hearty on the palate with tightly woven tannin, punchy, stony, final on polished red fruit, still a little unbalanced at present." Falstaff
"A spicy and lively red wine with notes of tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, raspberries and cherry pits. Tight and firm, with medium body and firm tannins. Excellent focus." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme shows dusty minerals and aromas of dried fruit. This wine generally has more muscle and dark fruits compared to the Zottorinoto, which tends to be floral and more delicate in character. The Diciassettesalme is fresh and straightforward and delivers all the fundamentals of Nerello Mascalese from this mighty Sicilian volcano. The vineyard is located just below the Cottanera winery at 780 metres above sea level and is planted on light or grey lava rock. The soils are unique to this site." Wine Advocate

“Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Beautiful single vineyard Nerello from the north side of Etna. Cherry and small wild strawberry on the nose. Very clearly accentuated and fresh taste, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with an impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant bright ruby red. Fine-smelling, red berry nose, with a hint of sea salt, cold smoke, reverberating iron and slightly earthy. The palate is dense and tight, showing powerful, tight tannin, savoury, stretching long across the tongue, earthy finish." Falstaff
"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm red-fruit nose with just a hint of oak. A core of red fruit framed in chewy tannins. Very long, while the firm structure needs a little more time, which would need a tad more fruit concentration to balance out. Right now it has lots of charm." Jancis Robinson
"The Cottanera 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo draws its fruit from one of the grand cru sites of Etna, if you care to classify the appellation vineyards in that manner. From a hot vintage, this wine shows depth and concentration that gives the wine weight and a heavy center of gravity. That makes all the difference in terms of mouthfeel. The wine's volume and texture have been considerably enhanced. The quality of fruit is solid, and the wine shows pretty acidity thanks to vineyard sites located at a cool 750 meters in elevation." Hearty on the palate with tightly woven tannin, punchy, stony, final on polished red fruit, still a little unbalanced at present." Falstaff
"It has aromas of strawberries, orange peel, raspberries and chocolate orange, with some oyster shell. It is medium-bodied and tasty with firm, fine-grained tannins. Subtle mineral restraint. It is just opening up." James Suckling
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is dense and concentrated with volcanic tones of scorched earth and dark fruits. The wine has a bright primary of pressed cherries and blueberries, and it fills out nicely across the palate thanks to the medium weight texture of this supple fruit. There are also floral notes of rose and iris. This vintage has something to offer now, and it will offer more for those who choose to wait." Wine Advocate

“Contrada Zottorinoto” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2015
Just around 2,000 bottles of this noble Riserva are filled each year. With an abundance of aromas of black berries, balsamic nuances and spices as well as the expansive taste - full and clear - this great wine brings together finesse, elegance and softness in an excellent way. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cottanera's 2015 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto offers a beautiful level of purity and sharpness, with plenty of the electric energy and tightness you should expect of a great wine from Etna. This vintage offers some extra ripeness with fruity tones that veer toward plum and black cherry. But those fruit tones are reigned back by the defined mineral backbone of the wine that cedes to campfire ash and scorched earth. The 2015 fruit is a bit looser and thicker altogether. This wine should come together beautifully with a few more years of bottle aging. Only 1,900 bottles were made." Wine Advocate

"The ladies from the mountain." could be called this winegrower portrait, because it is actually a well-rehearsed team of 25 women, who do the manual work here at Cottanera. Because up here in the vineyards you have to do almost everything by hand. Up here? Imagine that you are now a steep narrow road with many curves, even serpentines, high in second gear and park about 700 meters high above the sea, which only 30 kilometers as the crow flies reflects the sun in the east. Black earth, a permanent breeze, which carries a fine herb spice with itself, in between the freshly combed green of the vine rows. Now Etna rises before you. 3,350 metres high, snow-covered for most of the year - you can also ski here until April. But that's not why we're here.
The visionaries: At the beginning of the 1990s, viticulture was almost extinct here. It's too much work. While in the south of Sicily, in flatter plains, vineyards to be cultivated by machine are the boom of the Nero d'Avola, most of the wine-growing stopped here in the north. Too much manual work caused too high costs. The area was small structured, most winegrowers owned perhaps one or two hectares. And these were Albarello cultures, an ancient form of wine education that looks like small trees with thick gnarled trunks, because these cultures were often up to one hundred years old. Uneconomical and also grape varieties that nobody knew and wanted to know. Because it was the time of international varieties. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah were the fashion in Sicily.
It was at this time that Giulielmo Cambria convinced his then 60-year-old father Francesco and his brother Enzo to set up a winery here together. The rest is a local, then an international success story. From wilderness and some hazelnut plantations they formed vineyards. Today it's almost 70 hectares. In the beginning the international varieties like Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier dominated. Soon the Cambria brothers, however, began to think about the old local varieties and planted the white Inzolia and Carricante, as well as the red Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. That was more than courageous at the time - and in the village Osteria the brothers were soon declared crazy behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, the elegant and volcanic-mineral wines of Etna are sought-after specialties among wine lovers that are hard to find because there are so few of them. All wines from Cottanera are characterised by a fine, typical spice, which can only be created here, in addition to wonderful fruit, delicate structure and elegance. Great wines from the volcano.
