“Barbazzale” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Barbazzale Rosso presents itself in dark purple and is a beautifully primary-fruity and solid Nerello from Cottanera. On the palate, it convinces with complex aromas of black berries and mocha. Full, harmonious and ducely fruity, with beautiful tannin, then an interesting fine bitter note in the long fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Juicy mulberry, blackberry, raspberry, orange and herb notes here, with a medium body and powdery tannins. Fruity and bright." James Suckling

Etna Rosato DOC 2022
Fresh rosato with a flavour of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness, a fine mineral note and, last but not least, an appealing palatability. SUPERIORE.DE
"This steely, saline rosé comes from a dedicated vineyard, and the fruit is cryo-macerated in the press for up to six hours to obtain the ideal colour. It offers delicious yet simple crunchy green apple, apricot and delicate, bright cherry and strawberry." Decanter
"A bright and fragrant rosé with notes of cherry blossom, peaches, rosehips and strawberries. Medium-bodied, creamy and delicate, but with plenty of flavour and a dry and delicious finish." James Suckling
"The Cottanera 2022 Etna Rosato is beautiful in the glass, with pink, golden and copper-coloured reflections. The colour of the wine is achieved with just three to four hours of skin contact and is aged in steel. The fruit for this wine comes from a vineyard specially cultivated for the production of rosé. The bouquet is floral at the front and fruity at the back. It shows balance and precision with a mineral finish. This is one of my favourite rosé wines from Italy, especially in this price range." “Contrada Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Brilliant ruby red colour. Diciasettesalme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit flavours, some flint and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced, elegant, full-bodied and salty fresh on the palate. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-light red; reductive-barrelled, plum cake, quite deep, arouses curiosity; dense, sweetness, depth of fruit, lots of beautiful tannin, length." Merum
"Brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, hints of mustard seeds, dried rose petals, raspberries, ripe cherries and delicately resinous tones, reminiscent of plaster on the finish. Hearty on the palate with tightly woven tannins, powerful, stony, with a polished red fruit final, currently still somewhat unbalanced." Falstaff
"A flavoursome and lively red wine with notes of tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, raspberries and cherry stones. Taut and firm, with a medium body and firm tannins. Excellent focus." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme shows dusty minerals and dried fruit flavours. This wine generally has more muscle and dark fruit compared to the Zottorinoto, which tends to be floral and more delicate in character. The Diciassettesalme is fresh and straightforward and delivers all the fundamentals of Nerello Mascalese from this mighty Sicilian volcano. The vineyard is located directly below the Cottanera winery at 780 metres above sea level and is planted on light or grey lava rock. The soils are unique for this location." Wine Advocate
"Vivid ruby with garnet hues, this volcanic red boasts fresh black cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Toasty notes, liquorice, and minerality add complexity. Concentrated palate, supple tannins, refreshing acidity. Elegant yet robust, with a hint of heat on the finish." Decanter

“Calderara” Bianco Etna DOC 2022
Proud single-vineyard Sicilian in a small edition made from 100% Carricante. Fine bouquet of citrus fruits and apricots. Wonderfully juicy fruit on the palate paired with good structure, balanced acidity, fine minerality and appealing length. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Etna Bianco Calderara opens slowly with a nuanced blend of young peaches, rubbed sage, stone dust and sweet spice, keeping the glass constantly in motion. Medium in body, this is silky-smooth, revealing mineral-laced orchard fruits lifted by a tinge of sour citrus. The 2022 finishes long and youthfully tense. A tart resonance of lime and savory herbs wraps things up." Vinous

“Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Beautiful single vineyard Nerello from the north side of Etna. Cherry and small wild strawberry on the nose. Very clearly accentuated and fresh taste, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with an impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant bright ruby red. Fine-smelling, red berry nose, with a hint of sea salt, cold smoke, reverberating iron and slightly earthy. The palate is dense and tight, showing powerful, tight tannin, savoury, stretching long across the tongue, earthy finish." Falstaff
"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm red-fruit nose with just a hint of oak. A core of red fruit framed in chewy tannins. Very long, while the firm structure needs a little more time, which would need a tad more fruit concentration to balance out. Right now it has lots of charm." Jancis Robinson
"The Cottanera 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo draws its fruit from one of the grand cru sites of Etna, if you care to classify the appellation vineyards in that manner. From a hot vintage, this wine shows depth and concentration that gives the wine weight and a heavy center of gravity. That makes all the difference in terms of mouthfeel. The wine's volume and texture have been considerably enhanced. The quality of fruit is solid, and the wine shows pretty acidity thanks to vineyard sites located at a cool 750 meters in elevation." “Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Wonderful single-vineyard Nerello from the north side of Etna at an altitude of 750 metres. Cherry and small wild strawberries on the nose. Very clearly accentuated and fresh flavour, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Herbal and summer meadow scents accompany balsamic red and black cherries, while in the mouth it's earthy and floral, with a juicy sapidity of ripe red fruits, a soft, silky mid-palate and fine, integrated tannins. Vertical and elegant, it finishes with some lavender and milk chocolate on the finish." Decanter
"It has flavours of strawberry, orange peel, raspberry and chocolate orange, with some oyster shells. It is medium-bodied and flavoursome with firm, fine-grained tannins. Subliminal mineral restraint. It is just opening up." James Suckling
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is dense and concentrated with volcanic tones of scorched earth and dark fruit. The wine has a bright primary side of crushed cherries and blueberries, and it fills out nicely across the palate thanks to the mid-weight texture of this supple fruit. Floral notes of rose and iris are also evident. This vintage has something to offer now, and it will offer even more for those who choose to wait." Wine Advocate

“Contrada Zottorinoto” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2015
Just around 2,000 bottles of this noble Riserva are filled each year. With an abundance of aromas of black berries, balsamic nuances and spices as well as the expansive taste - full and clear - this great wine brings together finesse, elegance and softness in an excellent way. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cottanera's 2015 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto offers a beautiful level of purity and sharpness, with plenty of the electric energy and tightness you should expect of a great wine from Etna. This vintage offers some extra ripeness with fruity tones that veer toward plum and black cherry. But those fruit tones are reigned back by the defined mineral backbone of the wine that cedes to campfire ash and scorched earth. The 2015 fruit is a bit looser and thicker altogether. This wine should come together beautifully with a few more years of bottle aging. Only 1,900 bottles were made." Wine Advocate

"This is a wild and earthy red wine with notes of watermelon, walnuts, ash, minerals and earth. It has a medium body and nice substance. Long, savoury and spicy." James Suckling
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Zottorinoto is darkly floral and earthy in the glass, with a blend of grilled herbs, crushed rocks and blackberries forming its bouquet. This displays silky textures and masses of mineral-tinged red and black fruits. Hints of cocoa emerge toward the close. It finishes with a coating of fine tannins and a staining of primary concentration, offset by a bump of residual acidity that maintains fantastic freshness despite its youthfully structured state." "The ladies from the mountain." could be called this winegrower portrait, because it is actually a well-rehearsed team of 25 women, who do the manual work here at Cottanera. Because up here in the vineyards you have to do almost everything by hand. Up here? Imagine that you are now a steep narrow road with many curves, even serpentines, high in second gear and park about 700 meters high above the sea, which only 30 kilometers as the crow flies reflects the sun in the east. Black earth, a permanent breeze, which carries a fine herb spice with itself, in between the freshly combed green of the vine rows. Now Etna rises before you. 3,350 metres high, snow-covered for most of the year - you can also ski here until April. But that's not why we're here.
The visionaries: At the beginning of the 1990s, viticulture was almost extinct here. It's too much work. While in the south of Sicily, in flatter plains, vineyards to be cultivated by machine are the boom of the Nero d'Avola, most of the wine-growing stopped here in the north. Too much manual work caused too high costs. The area was small structured, most winegrowers owned perhaps one or two hectares. And these were Albarello cultures, an ancient form of wine education that looks like small trees with thick gnarled trunks, because these cultures were often up to one hundred years old. Uneconomical and also grape varieties that nobody knew and wanted to know. Because it was the time of international varieties. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah were the fashion in Sicily.
It was at this time that Giulielmo Cambria convinced his then 60-year-old father Francesco and his brother Enzo to set up a winery here together. The rest is a local, then an international success story. From wilderness and some hazelnut plantations they formed vineyards. Today it's almost 70 hectares. In the beginning the international varieties like Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier dominated. Soon the Cambria brothers, however, began to think about the old local varieties and planted the white Inzolia and Carricante, as well as the red Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. That was more than courageous at the time - and in the village Osteria the brothers were soon declared crazy behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, the elegant and volcanic-mineral wines of Etna are sought-after specialties among wine lovers that are hard to find because there are so few of them. All wines from Cottanera are characterised by a fine, typical spice, which can only be created here, in addition to wonderful fruit, delicate structure and elegance. Great wines from the volcano.
