“Barbazzale” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Barbazzale Rosso presents itself in dark purple and is a beautifully primary-fruity and solid Nerello from Cottanera. On the palate, it convinces with complex aromas of black berries and mocha. Full, harmonious and ducely fruity, with beautiful tannin, then an interesting fine bitter note in the long fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Some nice red-fruit character, but there's a rather simple feel to this. Medium body, lightly firm tannins and a clean finish." James Suckling

Etna Rosato DOC 2020
Fresh rosato that smells of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness, a fine mineral note and last but not least a winning drinkability. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Etna Rosato is incredibly pretty with its bouquet of dusty dried flowers, peaches and white smoke. Its silky textures give way to a more tactile and almost crunchy display of pit fruits and minerals, yet it's all under an air of honeyed florals. There's a lovely salinity that lingers long, while residual acids keep the mouth watering for more." Vinous
"Loads of mineral character to this, from hot tile to chalk, together with notes of sour cherries and even a hint of damson. Medium-bodied with the same complex character to the lingering flavors. Well-balanced, serious rosé, made from nerello mascalese grapes." James Suckling

Etna Bianco DOC 2020
Elegant, exotic-looking Etna Bianco with wonderfully wide aromas of tropical fruits, flowers and peach. Beautifully juicy, balanced and long on the palate. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pale shimmering silver yellow. Pronounced aromas of lemon balm, freshly cut grass, tomato leaves in the background, a hint of fumé. Draws up with tension, very juicy in the drink, persistent with fine tension, ends mineral and on meadow hay." Falstaff
"This vivid and refreshing wine is an excellent introduction to the dry whites from Etna, with a wide spectrum of fruit aromas, from red apple to white peach via a slew of citrus. Sleek and polished, medium-bodied palate with lovely mineral freshness at the finish." James Suckling

“Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Brilliant ruby red. Diciasette Salme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit aromas and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced, elegant, full-bodied and fresh on the palate. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby red. In the nose of rich red berries, a hint of flint and delicate toast, then in the reverberation of ripe cherries. Clear and radiant on the palate, with tight, salty tannin, spans a wide arc, with emphasis and extremely delicate tasting." Falstaff
"Still very young, this Etna red has attractive, bright red-berry, wild-herb and candied-orange aromas. The palate has a level of creaminess that's unusual for this appellation, but behind that is a solid tannin structure that powers the moderately dry, mineral finish." James Suckling
"The Cottanera 2019 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme offers a lean and pure expression of Nerello Mascalese without too many extra bells or whistles. The wine finishes fermentation in oak and continues its evolution in large casks for eight months. There are dusty notes that frame cassis and sour cranberry. But both the fruity and the mineral sides of the wine are well-contained and measured." Robert Parker

“Calderara” Bianco Etna DOC 2018
Proud single vineyard Sicilian in small edition from 100% Carricante. Fine bouquet of citrus fruits and apricots. On the palate, a wonderfully juicy fruit paired with good structure, balanced acidity, fine minerality and appealing length. SUPERIORE.DE
"The Cottanera 2018 Etna Bianco Contrada Calderara is hitting prime drinking right now with perfumed notes of peach and orange peel, backed by candied almond and creamy custard. The Carricante grape is not normally this plush, soft and aromatic, but the Calderara is a special and deeply attractive wine. Some 40% of the total is fermented in oak and the wine is partially aged on the lees. These steps serve to further flesh out the wine's texture and volume. I especially love those glossy notes of latex or natural rubber. The wine is idea for a baked, flaky white fish." Robert Parker

“Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2017
Beautiful single vineyard Nerello from the north side of Etna. Cherry and small wild strawberry on the nose. Very clearly accentuated and fresh taste, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with an impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Elegant bright ruby red. Fine-smelling, red berry nose, with a hint of sea salt, cold smoke, reverberating iron and slightly earthy. The palate is dense and tight, showing powerful, tight tannin, savoury, stretching long across the tongue, earthy finish." Falstaff
"Mid ruby with orange tinges. Firm red-fruit nose with just a hint of oak. A core of red fruit framed in chewy tannins. Very long, while the firm structure needs a little more time, which would need a tad more fruit concentration to balance out. Right now it has lots of charm." Jancis Robinson
"The Cottanera 2017 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo draws its fruit from one of the grand cru sites of Etna, if you care to classify the appellation vineyards in that manner. From a hot vintage, this wine shows depth and concentration that gives the wine weight and a heavy center of gravity. That makes all the difference in terms of mouthfeel. The wine's volume and texture have been considerably enhanced. The quality of fruit is solid, and the wine shows pretty acidity thanks to vineyard sites located at a cool 750 meters in elevation." “Contrada Zottorinoto” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2015
Just around 2,000 bottles of this noble Riserva are filled each year. With an abundance of aromas of black berries, balsamic nuances and spices as well as the expansive taste - full and clear - this great wine brings together finesse, elegance and softness in an excellent way. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cottanera's 2015 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto offers a beautiful level of purity and sharpness, with plenty of the electric energy and tightness you should expect of a great wine from Etna. This vintage offers some extra ripeness with fruity tones that veer toward plum and black cherry. But those fruit tones are reigned back by the defined mineral backbone of the wine that cedes to campfire ash and scorched earth. The 2015 fruit is a bit looser and thicker altogether. This wine should come together beautifully with a few more years of bottle aging. Only 1,900 bottles were made." Robert Parker

"The ladies from the mountain." could be called this winegrower portrait, because it is actually a well-rehearsed team of 25 women, who do the manual work here at Cottanera. Because up here in the vineyards you have to do almost everything by hand. Up here? Imagine that you are now a steep narrow road with many curves, even serpentines, high in second gear and park about 700 meters high above the sea, which only 30 kilometers as the crow flies reflects the sun in the east. Black earth, a permanent breeze, which carries a fine herb spice with itself, in between the freshly combed green of the vine rows. Now Etna rises before you. 3,350 metres high, snow-covered for most of the year - you can also ski here until April. But that's not why we're here.
The visionaries: At the beginning of the 1990s, viticulture was almost extinct here. It's too much work. While in the south of Sicily, in flatter plains, vineyards to be cultivated by machine are the boom of the Nero d'Avola, most of the wine-growing stopped here in the north. Too much manual work caused too high costs. The area was small structured, most winegrowers owned perhaps one or two hectares. And these were Albarello cultures, an ancient form of wine education that looks like small trees with thick gnarled trunks, because these cultures were often up to one hundred years old. Uneconomical and also grape varieties that nobody knew and wanted to know. Because it was the time of international varieties. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah were the fashion in Sicily.
It was at this time that Giulielmo Cambria convinced his then 60-year-old father Francesco and his brother Enzo to set up a winery here together. The rest is a local, then an international success story. From wilderness and some hazelnut plantations they formed vineyards. Today it's almost 70 hectares. In the beginning the international varieties like Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier dominated. Soon the Cambria brothers, however, began to think about the old local varieties and planted the white Inzolia and Carricante, as well as the red Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. That was more than courageous at the time - and in the village Osteria the brothers were soon declared crazy behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, the elegant and volcanic-mineral wines of Etna are sought-after specialties among wine lovers that are hard to find because there are so few of them. All wines from Cottanera are characterised by a fine, typical spice, which can only be created here, in addition to wonderful fruit, delicate structure and elegance. Great wines from the volcano.
