“Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2016
Beautiful single vineyard Nerello from the north side of the Etna. In the bouquet cherry and small wild strawberry. Very clearly accentuated and fresh taste, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with an impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Cask sample. Just mid crimson. Sweet, aromatic raspberry nose. Really lithe and perfumed palate of raspberry and with firm tannins on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"This is a beautiful wine that is very representative of what a red wine from Etna should look and taste like. This classic rendition, the 2016 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo, shows medium-thick fiber and impressive depth. This is a direct and incisive wine that hits the palate with lovely intensity and sharply defined angles. Compared to Cottanera's Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme, this wine is taller, broader and speaks in a louder voice. I tasted the open bottle again the next morning, and the wine was even softer, more fleshed out and delicious." Robert Parker

“Contrada Zottorinoto” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2014
Only about 2,000 bottles are filled every year by this noble Riserva. With a full aroma of black berries, balsamic nuances and spices and a full and clear taste, this great wine excellently combines finesse, elegance and softness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Powerful, radiant ruby with garnet. Opened with notes of ripe, small blackberries, some plum, behind which iodine and liquorice. Full-bodied and dense at the beginning and the end, fine dark berry fruit, opens with present, dense tannin, in the final after liquorice." Falstaff
"Moderately saturated ruby-red. Clean, flinty and characterized typically by darker fruit aromas and flavors than all of the other Cottanera red wines. Finishes with slow building but noble tannins and a multilayered quality. Zottorinotto evolves at a much slower pace than other Etna reds, so I’d suggest forgetting about this in your cellar for the next couple of years." Vinous
"What a nose with tulips, dried rose petals, burnt oranges, pomegranate, mandarins, cinnamon, tamarind and black pepper. So juicy and generous yet structured and serious, the beautiful red fruit driven along by well-poised acidity and sturdy tannins." James Suckling
"The 2014 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto is one of the stars in this exciting group of new releases from Etna. The wine is darkly saturated and powered by intense, territory-driven aromas. Wild cherry and cranberry emerge first with dark tones of crushed rock and camphor ash at the back. The mouthfeel is tight, elegant and very polished. This vintage shows a very tight and compact nature at its core that makes me think it will have a lot to offer as it continues its bottle evolution. Only 1,900 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

"The ladies from the mountain." could be called this winegrower portrait, because it is actually a well-rehearsed team of 25 women, who do the manual work here at Cottanera. Because up here in the vineyards you have to do almost everything by hand. Up here? Imagine that you are now a steep narrow road with many curves, even serpentines, high in second gear and park about 700 meters high above the sea, which only 30 kilometers as the crow flies reflects the sun in the east. Black earth, a permanent breeze, which carries a fine herb spice with itself, in between the freshly combed green of the vine rows. Now Etna rises before you. 3,350 metres high, snow-covered for most of the year - you can also ski here until April. But that's not why we're here.
The visionaries: At the beginning of the 1990s, viticulture was almost extinct here. It's too much work. While in the south of Sicily, in flatter plains, vineyards to be cultivated by machine are the boom of the Nero d'Avola, most of the wine-growing stopped here in the north. Too much manual work caused too high costs. The area was small structured, most winegrowers owned perhaps one or two hectares. And these were Albarello cultures, an ancient form of wine education that looks like small trees with thick gnarled trunks, because these cultures were often up to one hundred years old. Uneconomical and also grape varieties that nobody knew and wanted to know. Because it was the time of international varieties. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah were the fashion in Sicily.
It was at this time that Giulielmo Cambria convinced his then 60-year-old father Francesco and his brother Enzo to set up a winery here together. The rest is a local, then an international success story. From wilderness and some hazelnut plantations they formed vineyards. Today it's almost 70 hectares. In the beginning the international varieties like Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier dominated. Soon the Cambria brothers, however, began to think about the old local varieties and planted the white Inzolia and Carricante, as well as the red Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. That was more than courageous at the time - and in the village Osteria the brothers were soon declared crazy behind closed doors.
Meanwhile, the elegant and volcanic-mineral wines of Etna are sought-after specialties among wine lovers that are hard to find because there are so few of them. All wines from Cottanera are characterised by a fine, typical spice, which can only be created here, in addition to wonderful fruit, delicate structure and elegance. Great wines from the volcano.
