    • Etna Rosato DOC 2018

      Etna Rosato DOC 2018

Fresh Rosato, which smells of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness and not least appealing sweetness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Very bright dusky pink. Attractive nose of flint and citrus fruits, compact with a slightly floral hint. On the palate light-footed and clear with juicy trait, stretches very nicely, balanced and slightly salty, ends in finest harmony." Falstaff

"Pale onion peel pink. Fresh juicy pomegranate, violet and saline nuances on the nose and in the mouth. Lots of flavor and sneaky concentration on the long juicy finish. Well done." VINOUS

"The 2018 Etna Rosato opens to a pale pink color and offers bright perfumes of almond blossom, sweet nectarine and wild cherry. The wine's color intensity is beautiful, with pale pink luminosity that shines with copper and gold. Served well chilled on a scorching summer day, it would be a great match to shrimp and seafood couscous. This is a terrific Rosato from Southern Italy—and a great value to boot." Robert Parker

"The 2018 Etna Bianco is a refreshingly fragrant and zesty wine with citrusy aromas of bergamot and lemon blossom followed by white peach. The wine is tonic, fresh and easy-drinking." Robert Parker

Cottaneras Nerello from Etna offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit aromas and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced on the palate, elegant, substantial and fresh. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep red; lighter in color than the Barbazzale Rosso. Captivating aromas of black cherry, red berries, fresh herbs and flowers. Plush and impressively concentrated; harmonious acidity gives good tension and definition to the midpalate. Finishes graceful and long with silky tannins. Lovely Etna Rosso." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Raspberry-fruit-driven nose with a fine spicy edge. No obvious oak and only a hint of mint on the palate intertwined with raspberry fruit. Elegant palate weight and firm, firm tannins that stick out for the moment, but this is very promising." Jancis Robinson

      “Calderara” Bianco Etna DOC 2016

Proud single layer Sicilian in small edition of 100% Carricante. Fine bouquet of citrus fruits and apricots. On the palate a wonderfully juicy fruit paired with good structure, balanced acidity, fine minerality and appealing length. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling yellow-green. Opened with steel mineral notes, then lots of grapefruit and bergamot. Juicy and salty on the palate, unfolding at the back with creamy nuances". Falstaff

"The single-vineyard 2016 Etna Bianco Contrada Calderara is indeed characterized by a more robust and structured flavor profile. The bouquet offers stone fruit, pineapple and Golden Delicious apple. This white wine also offers a broad and lasting sense of texture and volume. The vines are 40 years old and more, and the wine is partially oak fermented. Some 5,600 bottles were produced." Robert Parker

"Vivid straw with golden highlights. Very lemony fresh aromas of apple and pear, lifted by white flowers. Then juicy, deep and quite serious with a very strong lemon and mineral presence, offering lingering white peach nuances on the back end. This will likely develop slowly and blossom in about two years from now. Best white from Cottanera I have ever tried." Vinous

    • "Contrada Feudo di Mezzo" Rosso Etna DOC 2014

“Contrada Feudo di Mezzo” Rosso Etna DOC 2014

Beautiful single vineyard Nerello from the north side of the Etna. In the bouquet cherry and small wild strawberry. Very clearly accentuated and fresh taste, acidity and tannin in perfect harmony and well integrated. Long finish with an impressive elegance and freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright red. Flinty red berries and botanical herbs on the nose. Slightly riper red berries in the mouth, at once elegant but also currently very tannic. Turns very floral on the long finish. This will age well. Strikes me as one of the more precise, refined versions of this wine by Cottanera. From 25 year old vines, this 100% Nerello Mascalse is aged in 20 hL oak barrels for 15 months." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Aromas of watermelon, plums and flowers follow through to a medium body with a solid core of fruit and a smoky and fruity finish. Delicious. Pure nerello mascalese." James Suckling

"Here's a very interesting new wine from the Cambria family of Cottanera. The 2014 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo is a single-vineyard effort from one of the most celebrated cru sites on this northern side of the volcano. Feudo di Mezzo sees soils that have been broken down and eroded from ancient lava flows and is therefore fine and almost sandy in nature. This helps to establish elegance and finesse in the wine. The bouquet opens to wild blueberry and white cherry aromas with light dustings of ash and spice at the back." Robert Parker

    • "Contrada Zottorinoto" Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2012

“Contrada Zottorinoto” Rosso Riserva Etna DOC 2012

Just about 2,000 bottles are filled every year by this noble Riserva. With an aromatic fullness of black berries, balsamic nuances and spices, as well as an expansive taste - full and clear - this great wine combines finesse, elegance and softness perfectly. SUPERIORE.DE

"Cottanera is showing an ever-increasing learning curve, and I think this is very evident in this Riserva. This is the second edition of a limited-edition (only 1,982 bottles were produced), single-vineyard, top-shelf wine. The 2012 Etna Rosso Riserva Zottorinoto puts Cottanera's winemaking moxie to the test. The results show depth, volume and power, with bold aromatic trimmings of blackberry, crème de cassis, balsam herb and dried mint. But the real personality of the bouquet is driven by those distinctive mineral notes of ash and brimstone. In the mouth, the wine is alive and succulent. This is an excellent, cellar-worthy red wine from Etna." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Cottanera
    Sicily
    Cottanera

"The ladies from the mountain." could be called this winegrower portrait, because it is actually a well-rehearsed team of 25 women, who do the manual work here at Cottanera. Because up here in the vineyards you have to do almost everything by hand. Up here? Imagine that you are now a steep narrow road with many curves, even serpentines, high in second gear and park about 700 meters high above the sea, which only 30 kilometers as the crow flies reflects the sun in the east. Black earth, a permanent breeze, which carries a fine herb spice with itself, in between the freshly combed green of the vine rows. Now Etna rises before you. 3,350 metres high, snow-covered for most of the year - you can also ski here until April. But that's not why we're here.

The visionaries: At the beginning of the 1990s, viticulture was almost extinct here. It's too much work. While in the south of Sicily, in flatter plains, vineyards to be cultivated by machine are the boom of the Nero d'Avola, most of the wine-growing stopped here in the north. Too much manual work caused too high costs. The area was small structured, most winegrowers owned perhaps one or two hectares. And these were Albarello cultures, an ancient form of wine education that looks like small trees with thick gnarled trunks, because these cultures were often up to one hundred years old. Uneconomical and also grape varieties that nobody knew and wanted to know. Because it was the time of international varieties. Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah were the fashion in Sicily.

It was at this time that Giulielmo Cambria convinced his then 60-year-old father Francesco and his brother Enzo to set up a winery here together. The rest is a local, then an international success story. From wilderness and some hazelnut plantations they formed vineyards. Today it's almost 70 hectares. In the beginning the international varieties like Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Viognier dominated. Soon the Cambria brothers, however, began to think about the old local varieties and planted the white Inzolia and Carricante, as well as the red Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. That was more than courageous at the time - and in the village Osteria the brothers were soon declared crazy behind closed doors.

Meanwhile, the elegant and volcanic-mineral wines of Etna are sought-after specialties among wine lovers that are hard to find because there are so few of them. All wines from Cottanera are characterised by a fine, typical spice, which can only be created here, in addition to wonderful fruit, delicate structure and elegance. Great wines from the volcano.
