Barbera d’Alba Superiore DOC 2018
Fontanabianca has created here an elegant and densely packed Barbera. It shows the exuberance and potential of the grape while still maintaining a reasonable degree of restraint. It is neither marmalade nor too fruity, but pampers with a fine dose of dried cherry and plum aromas, along with some Spanish cedar wood with a fine citrus note. A well-balanced drop with a beautiful final. SUPERIORE.DE
"A lightly fruity red with berry and walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body. Easy finish." James Suckling
"The Fontanabianca 2018 Barbera d'Alba Superiore is a lovely wine with a darkly saturated side contrasted against a more contained and elegant mouthfeel. Those qualities make this wine a perfect candidate for a restaurant steak and potatoes. You get all the vivid brightness of the bouquet, with wild cherry and blackberry, with a good dose of refreshing acidity that cuts through the fat in your favorite foods." Robert Parker

Nebbiolo Langhe DOC 2018
A Nebbiolo for purists. In the fragrance pine resin, dried fruit and essential spices. On the palate we find sweet plums, juicy cherries, robust tannins and a fine mineral acidity. This drop requires a strong food companion and is in this combination a great pleasure! SUPERIORE.DE
"Really polished and balanced with berries, cherries and spices. Hints of walnuts. Medium body. Creamy finish. A smoky note comes through." James Suckling
"The Fontanabianca 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo shows a bright and tonic vibe that makes this a good choice for dinners at home with the family. The wine is open and approachable with lovely aromas of wild cherry, crushed flower and soft ferrous earth. The mouthfeel is lean and those Nebbiolo tannins are silky and satiny." Robert Parker

“Classe 91” Metodo Classico VSQ 2018 Brut
With just 3.0 grams of residual sugar, this high-quality sparkling wine, produced using the champagne process, is a particularly dry representative of its kind. The Chardonnay grapes come from clayey and calcareous terroirs about 450m above sea level in the small municipality of Neviglie. In the nose fresh floral with beautiful citrus and subtle yeast note. Fine perlage, harmonious on the palate with fine creaminess and a complex finish. SUPERIORE.DE

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2017
Medium deep ruby red with orange reflections. Wonderful bouquet of fine sour cherry and strawberry compote with restrained oak spice. Complex and juicy on the palate with a potpourri of dark fruit, framed by fine-grained tannin. Well structured, it leads to an interesting, long finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Tasted blind. Mid ruby with bricky rim. Deep, brooding nose with a hint of fruit pastry and succulent, dark fruit and dried cherry on the palate. Lots of juice on the finish, while the coating tannins give it grip." Jancis Robinson
"Packaged in the bottle with the black label, the Fontanabianca 2017 Barbaresco Bordini shows us a beautiful expression from Neive, one of the three principal comuni, or villages, that make up the appellation. The results here are tightly knit and firm, with lifted aromas of forest fruit, iron ore, cola and balsam herb. The tannins show some dryness, probably a consequence of the hot vintage, but the wine offers plenty of extra fruit padding and cushioning in order to hit the right balance. The final results are yielding and pliable." Robert Parker
"A firm, fresh red with raspberry, lemon-peel and light cedar undertones. It’s medium-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are long and very intense. Just a baby. Give it time to come around. Better after 2022." James Suckling

Barbaresco Bordini DOCG 2016

"Deep ruby with orange tinges. Closed and not showing much on the nose except for faint, sweet hints. Youthful and tightly built palate but with plenty of fruit on the finish. Gripping tannins that then melt on the finish." Jancis Robinson
"Underbrush, balsamic notes, new leather and rose aromas lead the nose. Tight and assertive, the linear, full-bodied palate offers dried cherry, licorice and espresso framed in firm acidity and youthfully austere, close-grained tannins that leave a tight, rather austere finish. Give this time to fully unwind and open up." Wine Enthusiast
"The Fontanabianca 2016 Barbaresco Bordini is a very soft and accessible expression of Nebbiolo that shows some ripe fruit softness with bold cherry notes followed by spice, tobacco and tar. The wine delivers a very tightly knit texture, yet it is surprisingly forthcoming and generous at the same time. It's another great Barbaresco for grilled meats." Robert Parker

"family business" one could call the typical Piedmontese winery of the Polas. Papa Aldo and son Matteo take care of the winemaking, so to speak the cellar, the second son Davide takes care of the vineyards and Mama Luisella takes care of the organisation and the bookkeeping.
It all began in 1969 when grandfather Franco Pola and his friend Ottavio Ferro founded a small winery in Bordini. A tiny village near Neive in Piedmont, where one family ran a Salumeria and the other family sold it in their Alimentari.
The sons Aldo Pola and Bruno Ferro made such fine wines in the second generation that Fontanabianca quickly became a secret tip among wine lovers. This was mainly due to the fact that the two recognized the potential that was to be found in their Barbaresco top locations. "Bordini" and "serraboella" and worked out the elegance of this calcareous terroir. While Bordini is almost entirely south oriented and therefore produces slightly denser, fuller wines, Serraboella is exposed to the southwest and a little cooler.
Matteo Pola joined the company in 2016 after studying wine and a few years in a wine laboratory, when the Ferro family retired for reasons of age. Matteo loves the elegance and harmony between fruit, tannins and acidity in the wine and has therefore carefully changed the style: "In the late 1990s and 2000s, complexity was important, as ripeness meant harvesting as late as possible to reach high sugar levels. I prefer to harvest three or four days earlier, looking for the optimal degree of ripeness to achieve more elegance and freshness. I don't want aromas of overripe grapes in my wines."
The 2018 harvest also saw the completion of the new cellar, which over three floors, two of which are directly under the vineyard, enables gentler treatment without pumps. Matteo now also has more room for even more accurate selection, including large and small wooden barrels, when taking over the grapes, in order to be able to optimally develop the various batches. Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo are cultivated. Four wines are made from Nebbiolo, one Langhe Nebbiolo, one "normal Barbaresco" - a selection of different sites, classically matured in large wooden barrels - and the two single sites (Cru): Barbaresco Serraboella, from approx. 15-20 year old vines, fermented in steel tanks and traditionally matured in large barrels for 15 months, as well as the "flagship" Barbaresco Bordini, from vines over 30 years old, allowed to mature for 15 months in small barrels (tonneaux and barriques).
And because his grandfather loved to drink sparkling wines so much, he was pleased to have produced a "blanc de blancs" Spumante Metodo Classico in classic bottle fermentation from Chardonnay, with almost zero residual sugar or dosage, which is now quite in demand. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature and for several years neither fertilizers nor chemical sprays have been used. SUPERIORE.DE
