“Sallier de la Tour” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2021
The Sallier de la Tour winery has been owned by the Counts Tasca since 2009, making it the fifth winery that complements and characterises the diversity and professionalism of what is probably Sicily's most famous winery. Deep dark red, spices and a fine note of liquorice on the nose. Beautiful classic fruit and freshness on the palate, the discreet use of wood gives it concentration, backbone, velvety elegance and a good future. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark red; intense, discreetly volatile fruit, raspberries, violets, rubber, inviting; juicy, fresh fruit, finely tart, drinky, round and balanced, very pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"In the glass, the Nero d'Avola 2021 is dark and somewhat reductive. It opens with a forest-inspired blend of wild berries and peppery herbs. It is soft and enveloping with ripe red and blue fruits swirling under a hint of violet blossom. It leaves a hint of primary concentration and finishes grippy and long while retaining a lovely inner freshness. This wine has potential, but the 2021 will need cellaring to come into its own." Lambrusco Metodo Ancestrale dell’Emilia IGT secco
Metodo Ancestrale (also called Pet Nat) is a natural form of fermentation in the bottle, but without the addition of a dosage. This second fermentation in the bottle stops automatically due to the natural consumption of oxygen. The wine is not shaken and then disgorged as in the Champagne process, but is usually put on sale on its lees.
Dark pink with purple reflections. On the nose, ripe raspberries with a delicate note of elderberries. On the palate, the taut acid structure combined with precise fruit components such as raspberry, cassis, sloe and a hint of citrus are convincing. Although the residual sugar has been completely fermented, this Lambrusco is still fruity, drinky and an exceptional pleasure with every sip! SUPERIORE.DE"Light strawberry pink; discreet strawberry fruit, also distantly rosemary; fine foamy, strawberry fruit, delicate tartness, juicy." (JLF) Merum

“Palai” Müller-Thurgau Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2022
The Palai area is one of the most representative areas for the production of Müller Thurgau in Italy due to its microclimatic characteristics and the influence of the Cembra and Isarco valleys. In order to preserve its varietal characteristics (aromas and natural antioxidants), the grapes are processed using the hyper-reduction technique (in the absence of oxygen) developed and patented by the company.
Brilliant straw yellow with greenish reflections. The bouquet is intense, aromatic and rich with notes of baked apples and crushed raw almonds, accompanied by citrus peel and a hint of smoke. Its fine acidity and aromatic vein make it a convincing accompaniment to both great fish dishes and simple braised dishes with freshwater fish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light yellow; fresh fruit, grapefruit, inviting; juicy acidity, nettle, crisp, fruity, drinky, length, pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"This bone-dry white wine is lean and seductive. It offers notes of petrol and stones overlaid with flavours of poached quince, nectarine, verbena and grapefruit flesh, and crackles with lively acidity on the crisp finish." Wine Spectator
"The 2022 Müller Thurgau Palai is intense, herbal and perfumed with dusty flowers, lemon zest and crushed stone. Wonderfully fresh and seriously salty, this reverberates across the palate with zesty acidity and a mineral-tinged blend of orchard fruits. Long and staining yet full of tension, the 2022 leaves the cheeks puckered and the mouth watering for more with a saline sensation that resonates. The limestone soils of these vineyards shine through in the glass." Vinous

Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Fine, slender and racy Chianti Classico from organic cultivation - and one of our particular favourites for 20 years. Captivating aromas, dense, firm body, deep and juicy, with well-defined tannins and a fresh and appetising finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark red; rather discreet; good acidity, juicy acidity, also fruit, tannic, not drying, length." Merum
"Brilliant, youthful ruby red colour. Beautiful, pure bouquet of cherries with mineral and savoury notes. On the palate, an impeccable balance between fresh, concentrated red fruit, juicy acidity and fine, gravelly tannins. Simply irresistible." Jancis Robinson
"The Chianti Classico 2021 is accessible and easy to drink. Mild cherry and dried raspberry, followed by almond, blue flower and peat moss. The winemaking is very simple and starts with spontaneous yeast fermentation and a short maturation in large oak barrels. You get good value, especially with this classic vintage." Wine Advocate
"The Chianti Classico 2021 is great. Bright and vibrant, with plenty of Sangiovese character, the 2021 is everything a Chianti Classico should be. Bright red cherry fruit, blood orange, mint, spice and tobacco all come through well in this juicy, wonderfully inviting Chianti Classico. The 2021 is one of the best editions of this wine I've tasted recently." Vinous
"A vibrant, even racy style, featuring cherry, pomegranate, rose hip and mineral aromas and flavors fused to a steely structure. Intense and elegant, this lingers, with fruit and stony mineral notes." Wine Spectator
"Notes of cooked strawberries, red liquorice, blood orange and cedar wood. Medium body. Bright and racy with crisp acidity and a flavourful finish." James Suckling
"Unobtrusive yet persistent, beautiful herbs and spring flowers on a bright strawberry. While the palate is still a little austere and angular, it shows great tension and concentration. Fine-grained tannins provide an effortless, unforced structure, while the pure raspberry notes are enhanced by salty minerals in this mid-weight beauty." Decanter

On the more fruit-forward palate, bitter orange peel and dark chocolate maintain balance, while acid zips past grasping tannins." Wine Enthusiast

Beautiful, single-varietal white from Carricante from Planeta's Etna Dependence. A youthful, exuberant growth full of freshness, energy and minerality. Grown under exclusive conditions on volcanic soils and at an altitude of 870 metres, this wine is an exceptional pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE
"Warm light yellow; openly fruity, pronounced, appealing; sweet, full-fruity, ripe pear, concentrated, dense, very nice." (JLF) Merum
"The 2022 Etna Bianco Contrada Taccione is wickedly fresh, displaying an herbal-tinged bouquet of lime, peach and mint. This opens with a pleasant inner sweetness as a burst of zesty acidity enlivens its tart orchard fruits. The 2022 tapers off crunchy, with a flourish of salinity and an inner smoky sensation." Vinous
"The nose is light, fresh and gentle, with coherent but compelling aromas of citrus, yellow apple and white flowers. The palate is lemon-driven, but a hint of salt brings out a honey-nut element and a lingering apple note." Wine Enthusiast

Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Medium, bright ruby red colour. The bouquet and flavour are dominated by interesting notes of fresh cut flowers, sweet red berries, liquorice, mint, pine and cedar wood. As the wine progresses, the Chianti Classico reveals a marvellous precision and spiciness, which is enveloped by a well-measured extract sweetness. The overall impression is one of grace and an open-hearted style, which impresses with all its components and not least with its typical Radda Sangiovese freshness. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium red; reductive, appealing; round, balanced, fruit, dense, round tannin, very pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"10% Merlot gives this animating Chianti Classico a rich mouthfeel, it glides velvety over the palate and offers plenty of fruit." Weinwisser
"Intense, radiant ruby red colour. Inviting on the nose, with elegant spice and red cherry fruit, light peach flavour. On the palate with tightly woven tannins, fresh, with clear fruit and subtle spice, beautiful length, drinks very well." Falstaff
"On the nose, dark chocolate links sweet cherry and vanilla to savory tomato leaf and earth. The streaks of cherry, chocolate and vanilla continue on the palate, with strawberries highlighting their sweetness, but well-timed tannins and acid boost the enduring, vegetal tomato note to maintain balance." Wine Enthusiast
"This Annata opens to reveal generous plums and strawberries flecked with black pepper. Sweet red berries fill the mouth while showing the brightness and freshness associated with the heights of Radda. The balanced tannins have a slightly chalky texture that adds a special touch to this delicious red wine." Decanter
"The 2021 Chianti Classico is an absolute delight. Fragrant, silky and super-expressive, the 2021 captures all the finesse of Radda. Crushed red berry fruit, rose petals, orange peel and mint are beautifully brought out in this vibrant, medium-bodied Chianti Classico that has so much to offer. It's a beautiful performance." Vinous
"A racy version with flavours of black cherries, blueberries, violets and iron. It has firm tannins that harmonise with the acidity, while a hint of Mediterranean scrub shines through. Mouthwatering finish." Wine Spectator
"Balanced blend of Sangiovese and Merlot, notes of redcurrants, undergrowth and liquorice on the nose, wild mint on the finish. Juicy attack, dense and crisp, salty-sour tannins, very long finish. Closes with a return of small red fruits." Luca Gardini

“Saia” Nero d’Avola Sicilia DOC 2020 (BIO)
The pure Nero d'Avola is bursting with dark aromas of berries, black cherry, liquorice and tobacco. Lush and distinctive on the palate with wonderful spicy notes of mint, aniseed and espresso. Juicy tannins, good length, fine pressure. A really great wine of impressive intensity at a still very reasonable price, incidentally certified organic since the 2020 vintage! SUPERIORE.DE
"Dark ruby; cooked wild berries, arouses curiosity; juicy, clear tannin, cherry fruit, crisp, good length." Merum
"Very intense dark violet colour. Intense aromas of sour cherries and plums on the nose, accompanied by notes of leather and white pepper. In the mouth it is powerful but balanced, very drinky, also thanks to a fine tannin structure, persistent and savoury." Falstaff
"Deep carmine red colour. Brooding and muted fruit with a hint of leather. Fluid, elegant and juicy. Long and supple, with finely polished tannins. A truly elegant Nero d'Avola of the new school." Jancis Robinson
"The Saia 2020 is seductively dark and opens with a blend of red plums, sage, smoke and tangerine peel. It is soft and round and shows ripe red and blue fruits, sweet herbs and dark chocolate. The juicy acidity ensures that the 2020 finishes long and pleasantly acidic. Traces of sour citrus fruits slowly fade away. This incredibly beautiful Nero d'Avola wants to please." Vinous
"A wine with deep, earthy cherry and herb scents, and a rich, vertical palate of sweet black and red fruits and potpourri fragrance allied to good acidity and fine, sandy tannins. The barriques peek through with their coffee, liquorice and spice, but this is ultimately a fresh, gastronomic Nero d'Avola, well sculpted and flexible with food." Decanter
"This medium to full-bodied red wine is well-structured and balanced, with a slight hint of balsamico acidity that enlivens concentrated flavours of blackberry, roasted plum, violet, espresso and smoke. The fine tannins provide fine definition and firm up the slightly chalky finish." Wine Spectator
"The organically certified 2020 Sicilia Saia is a pure Nero d'Avola from one of the most beautiful areas of rural Sicily in Noto. This red wine shows medium concentration with dark fruits, ripe cherries, black olives and sweet earthy tones. It is richly structured and finishes with soft, sweet tannins. This is a great wine for the kitchen." Wine Advocate
"Aromas of black liquorice, crushed plums and ground spices. Medium to full body with powdery but firm tannins. Fresher and crisper than previous vintages. The red and black fruits on the palate are nicely articulated by a steady acidity and some mineral notes." James Suckling
"Pure Nero d'Avola from the area between Noto and Pachino, 14 months in French barriques, a wine of great stature. On the nose, notes of blackberries, violets and a hint of juniper on the finish. Compact and juicy on the palate, with brackish tannins, fruity flavours and a long, spicy finish." Luca Gardini

Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 (BIO)
Every year, Istine's Chianti Classico is one of the most racy and authentic representatives of its genre. Its weightlessness and at the same time precision make up a large part of its appeal. A finely knit bouquet of red berries, flowers, chalk and white pepper. Medium-bodied on the palate, its fine fruit, creamy tannins and plenty of personality come to light with further aeration. A red wine that takes hearts by storm with its lively, dancing and extremely fine nerve! SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-intense red; subtly red-fruity, slightly spicy, arouses curiosity; sweetness, juicy, clear acidity, fruit, good tannin, pleasing." (JLF) Merum
"A lively, straightforward red wine that produces flavours of black cherries, blackberries, liquorice and spices. Rich and dense, with a lively structure, it finishes with generous fruit and spice flavours." Wine Spectator
"The Chianti Classico 2021, which has just been bottled, captures all the energy of the year in its bright, red fruit. Blood orange, mint, white pepper and lively acidity give the Chianti Classico a remarkable energy that sparkles with excitement. All of this is underpinned by plenty of fruit. Bright salty notes extend the finish wonderfully." Vinous
"A crisp, spicy and fruity Classico. Small red fruits on the nose, especially pomegranate, amoral notes of marjoram, iris tones on the finish. Juicy mouthfeel, nice spice and tension, fruity again on the finish." Luca Gardini

Not a Lambrusco, but a highly elegant and classically yeast-fermented spumante made from Lambrusco di Sorbara grapes: elegant pale pink colour, delicate aroma of rosehip and a hint of wild strawberry and raspberry. A lovely freshness on the palate with a fruity, long finish and great structure. SUPERIORE.DE

“Ghiaia Nera” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Ghiaia, a pure Nerello Mascalese from the slopes of Mount Etna, exudes sweet aromas of cherries and flowers. A refined, very detailed and seductive wine with great charm, character and personality. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-light red colour; reductive red-fruity, appealing; powerful, deep fruit, subtly tart tannin, long." Merum
"Attractive bouquet of chestnuts, violets and crisp strawberries, fresh and crisp with attractive acidity and a savoury finish." Decanter
"Sweet berries and orange peel with undertones of peach and lemon blossom. Medium-bodied, with crisp fruit and a fresh and slightly chewy finish. Delicious wine, now showing volcanic character with ashy and smoky undertones." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Ghiaia Nera is intense, smoky and ashy, opening with a burst of crushed strawberries complicated by hints of blood orange and clove. This is a model of purity, with zesty red berry fruits and a core of salty minerality that comes forward toward the close. Brisk acidity maintains fantastic balance. A web of fine tannins lingers long, creating a classically dry sensation and youthful tension as sour cherry tones taper." Vinous

“Contrada Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2021
Brilliant ruby red colour. Diciasettesalme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit flavours, some flint and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced, elegant, full-bodied and salty fresh on the palate. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Medium-light red; reductive-barrelled, plum cake, quite deep, arouses curiosity; dense, sweetness, depth of fruit, lots of beautiful tannin, length." Merum
"Brilliant ruby red colour. On the nose, hints of mustard seeds, dried rose petals, raspberries, ripe cherries and delicately resinous tones, reminiscent of plaster on the finish. Hearty on the palate with tightly woven tannins, powerful, stony, with a polished red fruit final, currently still somewhat unbalanced." Falstaff
"A flavoursome and lively red wine with notes of tapenade, sun-dried tomatoes, raspberries and cherry stones. Taut and firm, with a medium body and firm tannins. Excellent focus." James Suckling
"The 2021 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme shows dusty minerals and dried fruit flavours. This wine generally has more muscle and dark fruit compared to the Zottorinoto, which tends to be floral and more delicate in character. The Diciassettesalme is fresh and straightforward and delivers all the fundamentals of Nerello Mascalese from this mighty Sicilian volcano. The vineyard is located directly below the Cottanera winery at 780 metres above sea level and is planted on light or grey lava rock. The soils are unique for this location." Wine Advocate
"Vivid ruby with garnet hues, this volcanic red boasts fresh black cherry and dried blackberry aromas. Toasty notes, liquorice, and minerality add complexity. Concentrated palate, supple tannins, refreshing acidity. Elegant yet robust, with a hint of heat on the finish." Decanter

Bright ruby red, notes of fresh fruit, cherry, wild berries on the nose, with elegant hints of white pepper. Spicy, juicy and tasty on the palate, with remarkable persistence and great length! SUPERIORE.DE
"Young light red; reductive, fresh, fruity, peach; round, juicy, fruit deep, long, very nice." (JLF) Merum
"Juicy, crisp, light and playful, with exuberant energy running on a trail of white peppery acidity and a gentle drive of herbal tannins. Red limestone. Strawberry, mountain herbs, crushed musk and lilac. A great substitute for a Cru Beaujolais. A delicious drinking pleasure that reflects the current zeitgeist of quality fruit without dryness, tension and joyful immediacy." James Suckling
"Lively and spicy on the nose, with notes of strawberry sweets. Nervous and structured on the palate, very long and pure." Decanter

Merum, the Italian magazine for wine, olive oil, travel and food, has been writing completely independently, competently and critically about wine and olive oil for 25 years, and also about Italian topics, which other magazines leave behind.
For more than 25 years, the Merum editors around editor-in-chief Andreas März have been passionately reporting on famous and unknown appellations, researching directly on site, selecting the best Barolo, Brunello, Chianti Classico etc. for the readers, and at the same time being committed to less prominent wines such as Vernatsch, Grignolino, Raboso, Lambrusco and, of course, quality olive oil. The articles never just scratch the surface, but provide background knowledge and details that are useful to readers when making purchases and travelling to Italy.
Merum is not a commercial product, let's call it an immodest cultural product. What is written in Merum is not embellished, sometimes perhaps undiplomatic, even ruthless in the tastings, and uncompromising in the values for which the makers stand. Merum does not seek broad consensus and circulation at any price, but works forward in the service of its subscribers on a journalistic course with which they do not always have to identify, but on whose transparency, reliability and independence they can build. The Swiss small publisher is interested in values that should be strengthened and not in profits that should be maximized.
Founder and editor-in-chief Andreas März is Swiss, who owns a small farm in Tuscany, where he himself produces one of the best olive oils in Italy and a little wine. In the past, he has built a solid editorial team around himself. Like himself, all editors are completely independent, contentious and constantly on the lookout for the best quality.
Some MERUM creations enjoy great popularity, such as the little word "beaver wine", which is used to describe wines that have been given too much "toasting" from barrique barrels and thus fall through the evaluation grid. Or the JLF test, at which wines are served hidden on the table for the joint dinner of the editorial staff and also at regular reader meetings in Tuscany, and then the centimetres of remaining wine are measured with a ruler: The emptier the bottle (the better the wine).
At MERUM, only wines that have a high "drinking factor" in addition to grape variety typicity and terroir fidelity are rated positively. Wines that speak the clear language of their origins and are a lot of fun. The actual wine evaluation is published in the middle of the issue as Merum-Selezione and is evaluated with one to three hearts. Each year the extensive MERUM paperbacks "Italy's Best Wines" and "Italy's Best Olive Oils" are published and each issue is accompanied by a Degu Box containing the best wines from the respective theme tastings.
