• "Nanfrè" Valpolicella DOC 2018

      “Nanfrè" Valpolicella DOC 2018

Cherry red Valpolicella with a pleasantly light scent of currants and raspberries. Very harmonious and discreet on the palate, velvety and fruity in the finish. An ideal food companion, due to its slimmer kind also good for lunch. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright, clear ruby red. In the nose after sugared cherries, tender plum and some violet. Juicy palate with dancing acidity, fine play, high drinking flow, slightly salty in the final." Falstaff

    • "Metodo Ancestrale" Lambrusco dell'Emilia IGT secco

“Metodo Ancestrale” Lambrusco dell’Emilia IGT secco

The Metodo Ancestrale (also called Pet Nat) is a natural form of bottle fermentation, but without the addition of a dosage. This second fermentation in the bottle stops automatically due to the natural consumption of oxygen. The wine is not shaken and then degorged as in the champagne process, but is usually sold on the yeast.

Dark pink with purple reflections. In the bouquet ripe raspberries with a delicate elderberry note. On the palate, the tight acidity structure combined with precise fruit components such as raspberry, blackcurrant, blackthorn and a hint of citrus is convincing. Although the residual sugar has been completely fermented, this Lambrusco is still fruity, drinkable and an extraordinary pleasure with every sip! SUPERIORE.DE

    • "RADICE" Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC 2019 secco

“RADICE” Lambrusco di Sorbara DOC 2019 secco

Out with the cliché, in with the surprise! The most famous Lambrusco growth of the Paltrinieris will also fill every connoisseur with joy. Radice is produced in the Pét Nat method (Metodo Ancestrale) and therefore undergoes a second fermentation on its own yeast after bottling.

This naturally cloudy, dry Frizzante convinces already in the bouquet with notes of rhubarb, a fresh citrus note and some bread. The persistent, fine perlage and its drinky nature make it a racy companion of hearty-spicy antipasti, light meat dishes or simply an upbeat celebration in the midst of nature and happy people. SUPERIORE.DE

"This copper-red Frizzante is a natural work of art: tasting a little of rhubarb and raspberries, dry - and cloudy like a wheat beer, because it was fermented to the end in the bottle and not disgorged. It's capped with crown caps (as all Champagne is before disgorgement). The liveried waiter at the fancy restaurant in Sardinia opened the bottle at the table as cavalierly as the Köbes in Cologne opens beer. That's right!" Dr. Jens Priewe (weinkenner.de)

"Pale salmon pink; pastry notes, subtly rubbery, makes you curious; smooth foam, very fine, practically dry, depth of fruit, length, very pleasant (with yeast sediment)." (JLF) Merum

"Cloudy apricot. On the nose of yeast sediment, ripe tangerines, peach, fragrant floral finish. At the palate of medium weight, dry and nevertheless with nice fruit sweetness, uncomplicated and faultless, makes really mood." Falstaff

"Made by carrying out the second fermentation in the bottle, this radiant, lightly sparkling wine opens with heady aromas of citrus, violet and a yeasty whiff of bread dough. Bone-dry and delicious, the energized palate delivers tart sour cherry, juicy pomegranate, pink grapefruit and white pepper alongside crisp acidity and a savory hint of saline. One bottle probably won't be enough." Wine Enthusiast

“Col del Forno” Prosecco Spumante di Valdobbiadene Superiore Rive di Refrontolo DOCG (2019) Brut

Andreolas Col del Forno Brut is an elegant and balanced Prosecco from an excellent Rive site. Decent, fresh fragrance of green apple and young pear, delicate yet demanding on the palate with a drinkable, citrus note. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fresh fruity, inviting; very fine foam, subtle fruit, fresh, fine structure, bittersweet, drinkable, practically dry, balanced." (JLF) Merum

"Bright, rich, brilliant light gold with persistent perlage. In the nose slightly sulphurous, mineral, after salt. Very fresh on the palate with effervescent and young perlage, particularly crisp, biting and lively, a few more weeks in bottle will do it good." Falstaff

"From the Andreola lineup, the 2019 Valdobbiadene Rive di Refrontolo Brut Col Del Forno falls somewhere between the minerality of the 26° Primo and the spice of the Dirupo. Dusty potpourri, incense, dried apricots and ripe apple notes create an alluring display. It’s smooth and pliant, but with a stunning mix of zesty acids and minerals which add tension, as tart orchard fruits evolve toward the close. There’s a good amount of weight and concentration here, which leads me to believe that a year or two in the cellar may bring even further depth, as this finishes long with pretty inner florals." "Sparkling, clear ruby garnet. Opened with notes of saffron and liquorice, then lots of cherry, some pomegranate. Fine-meshed tannin on the palate, spreads well, much ripe fruit, smooth and long, salty." Falstaff

"Wow. I love the texture and beauty of this young Brunello. Medium to full body with a dense and tightly compacted palate. Dried cherry light cedar and chocolate. It goes on for minutes. Gorgeous now. Excellent acid fruit balance, but will improve with age." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Spicy nose that is not showing a lot of fruit (yet). Generous, long palate that is already accessible." Jancis Robinson

"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautifully finessed and elegant wine. It offers a very pleasing sense of balance in which no one characteristic overpowers the next. A dark ruby appearance gives the wine an open and inviting personality. The bouquet produces a subtle medley of wild berry, blueberry, underbrush and toasted almond aromas. The mouthfeel is lean, but it also shows polished and silky persistence. If you don't have the patience to wait, it tastes great even at this early stage." Robert Parker

"Dark spice, ripe berry, forest floor, Mediterranean brush and new leather aromas lead the nose on this powerfully structured wine. Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

In the fragrance black cherries, light spicy notes, some vanilla. Full body, fresh fruit, flattering texture and a clean, silky finish on the palate. Long lasting. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium intense, warm red; deep fruity notes, berry jam; powerful, dense, fine astringent tannin." Merum

"Bright, bright garnet red. Charming, inviting nose, smells of rose petals, pomegranate and raspberries, interwoven. On the palate it shows a polished, much fine-meshed tannin, spreads for a long time, ripe fruit, in the finale light bitter note." Falstaff

"This wine initially comes off as more somber, brooding and dark in personalty. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino takes a few moments in the glass before its starts to relax and grow in volume and context. Before long, opulent tones of black fruit, spice and pipe tobacco. The wine is elegantly tempered and finessed on the close." Robert Parker

"Bright red. The fresh, clean, perfumed nose hints at red cherry and blood orange. Then sweet and supple on the palate, but with a lively mouthfeel to the red fruit and underbrush flavors thanks to harmonious, vibrant acidity. Has much more midpalate flesh to support its acidity than some other less successful 2013 Brunellos, all of which are made in a similar high-acid style typical of the vintage. Finishes broad, savory and nicely persistent. This 2013 from Ciacci Piccolomini is made in a much cooler-climate style than is usual for this producer." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Exuding cherry, strawberry, floral and tobacco aromas and flavors, this effusive, fruity style is bright and elegant, with terrific harmony and a long, mouthwatering finish that leaves a mineral impression. Very compelling." Wine Spectator

"Aromas of light coffee, plum and cherry follow through to a full body with a wealth of dried fruit and hints of figs." James Suckling

"Underbrush, tobacco, ripe berry and balsamic aromas abound in this delicious red. Smooth, full-bodied and savory, the succulent palate doles out Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and white pepper. It's well balanced, with firm yet refined tannins and fresh acidity." • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

Characterful bouquet of sweet cherries, Mediterranean herbs, smoke and tobacco. The splendid fruit and the tightly woven tannins are carried by a light acidity. Mastrojannis Brunello of the Year 2013 seduces with wonderful charisma, intensity and finesse. Very good storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Quite dark red; with aeration fruit, gum, dried fruit, depth; round base, juicy acidity, fine, length, round tannin." Merum

"Plenty of dried fruits on the nose with cedar and flowers that follow through to a full body, layered tannins and an intense finish. Hints of raisins." James Suckling

"This is plump, with cherry, plum, iron and tobacco flavors, nicely balanced by a dense matrix of tannins. Tips slightly toward the dry side on the finish, yet stays fresh and long." Wine Spectator

"Mastrojanni's 2013 Brunello di Montalcino reveals a very precise and focused aromatic profile. This is a signature touch from this outstanding estate that, year in and year out, produces some of the best Brunello you can buy. Wild berries and cherries rise from the bouquet in an elegant flutter. Those tones are followed by spice, leather, rosemary and medicinal herb. The wine is streamlined, polished and smooth in terms of mouthfeel." Robert Parker

"Bright ruby-red. Aromas of raspberry, red currant and fresh herbs are complicated by roast coffee, licorice and mocha. Plush, pliant and sweet, offering seductive red berry, coffee and tobacco flavors lifted by a candied violet note. The long, smooth but vibrant finish features sweet tannins, a whiff of herbs and outstanding length." Antonio Galloni

"Agronomist/oenologist Andrea Machetti has been managing this property since 1992, although it was purchased by the Illy coffee group in 2008. The vineyards are close to Castelnuovo dell'Abate, where the soil is predominantly clay with a complex mix of marine salt, tuff, river pebbles and sand. Besides flavours of tobacco, dried sage and forest berries, this has a saline edge and a tanginess that gives plenty of vibrancy and length. Nicely framed by well-managed tannins." Decanter

"Mid ruby with bright, bricky tinges. Balsamic and almost a little medicinal on the nose. Ripe, concentrated fruit tightly packed with fine, grainy tannins. Impressive balance, staying power and youth." Jancis Robinson

    • Barolo "Baudana" DOCG 2014

      Barolo “Baudana” DOCG 2014

Fresh, sparkling ruby garnet. Opens with notes of pickled anchovies, then leather and dark wild raspberry. At the palate a lot of close-meshed, stoffiges tannin, pulls through rapidly, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure. Put away for some more years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Leasing and then acquiring the Luigi Baudana estate in Serralunga has given the Vajra family access to more fine vineyards. The result in 2014 is a delight, with a sweet, generous raspberry nose that shows both zest and charm. Medium-bodied, this is made in a gentle style that's not extracted but has sufficient tannin to give some grip. A firm mid-palate shows solid fruit and good persistence, followed by a long, balanced finish." Decanter

"Flavors of cherry, currant, eucalyptus, wild herbs, tar and iron are supported by dense tannins in this red. Though firm and compact, this remains long and detailed on the finish." Wine Spectator

"Located beyond the sprawling Fontanafredda estate, Baudana has consistently maintained its reputation for top-notch Nebbiolo. In fact, those who farmed this vineyard never had difficulty selling its fruit. Barolo Baudana was one of the first crus to be exported successfully into foreign markets. The site sees sandy limestone mixed with veins of heavier blue clay. You get both elegance and structure as a result. The 2014 Barolo Baudana reveals black and purple fruit characteristics with ethereal tones of smoke, tar and spice on the finish." Robert Parker

"A darker side of Nebbiolo emerges from the 2014 Barolo Baudana. Powerful but also supple, the 2014 is a wine of pure, arresting beauty. Sweet red cherry, kirsch and floral notes meld together in a striking, textured Barolo that is a joy to taste, even at this early stage." VINOUS

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Pianrosso" DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino “Pianrosso” DOCG 2015

Piccolomini's single vineyard Brunello Vigna di Pianrosso 2015 comes from a south-western exposure at an altitude of about 300 metres in the Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone. It is beautiful and delicate from the start and spontaneously impresses with its vitality, depth and balance. Compared to the basic Brunello, the wine matures for another year in oak barrels and you can feel the additional spice in the nose. Rich spices, leather and tar are followed by dark fruit, plum, blackberry and blackcurrant. The finish is graceful and silky, but its length remains impressive. This is a great achievement that promises a great future. SUPERIORE.DE

"A seductively complex scent of red berries, flowers, flanked by subtle liquorice aromas; the tannins powdery, the acidity invigorating and in perfect harmony, polished, ends in an opulent final on notes of plums, eucalyptus and chocolate. Recommended with an autumnal game dish." Vinum

"Sparkling ruby with intense garnet edge. Very inviting and complex nose of dried porcini mushrooms, wild raspberries and dark cherries, some leather. On the palate a lot of juicy berry fruit, opens with handy, dense tannin, salty and rich depth." Falstaff

"Deep red. Perfumed aromas and flavors of red and black cherry, cinnamon, mocha, ginger and blood orange. Smooth and multifaceted, with strong licorice notes emerging on the long suave close." Vinous

"Black cherry, blackberry and blueberry flavors mark this saturated red. Beefy tannins offer support and all the components are in the right place. Stays fresh and long on the finish, with lingering accents of fruit, mineral and tobacco." Wine Spectator

"The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso is distinguished by a unique aromatic profile that brings out mineral notes of crushed limestone or chalk. This adds a greater sense of focus and delineation that not only characterizes the bouquet but also applies to the way the wine hits the palate in a fuller and more determined way (compared to the slightly softer classic Brunello). Instead, this single-vineyard Brunello shows an upright and direct approach with soft salinity on the close followed by forest fruit, spice and medicinal herb. The mouthfeel makes a big impact thanks to its streamlined and polished texture." Robert Parker

"Lots of ripe and rich fruit with a decadent undertone of meat and spice that turns to pure fruit and licorice. Medium to full body, refined tannins and a fresh and bright finish. All about harmony. Better after 2021." James Suckling

Montosoli 2015 in bright ruby and with a clear bouquet of raspberry, blood orange and hot spices. Strict elegance on the palate, red fruits, flowers, tobacco and grass, with a slightly salty minerality, long finish. A Burgundy style with the tannin and structure of a great Brunello from an equally great vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium red; fruity, also cassis, arouses curiosity; round base, sweetness, good length, very pleasant." Merum

" Flower of violets and raspberries, also elegant balsamic notes; elegant structure with fine-grained tannins and beautiful progression towards aromas of ripe fruit, leather and dried flowers. A good accompaniment to food." Vinum

"Quite deep, firm scent of ripe mixed berries and a little cherry with delicate nutty and spicy aromas, a touch of bacon, pepper and mineral tones. Clear, firm, polished, rather juicy fruit with bite and youthful, yet very fine tannins, persistent on the palate, a little peppery spice in the background, also a little wood and roasting, a touch of tobacco and herbs, restrained power, good depth, nutty notes, multi-layered, very good, firm, juicy and spicy finish with salt and draught." Wein-Plus

"Bright ruby with a fine garnet shimmer. Very clear, appealing nose of fresh, ripe cherries, some dried orange peel and cloves. Blossoms beautifully on the palate, very well worked out, present fruit, fresh cherry, opens with a lot of fine-meshed tannin, builds up for a long time." Falstaff

"Rich and round, featuring cherry, raspberry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors. Graceful and intense, showing terrific balance, with a long, fruit-, tobacco- and mineral-tinged aftertaste. Exhibits fine purity and freshness." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli has a dark, hauntingly beautiful bouquet, displaying ripe blackberry and cherry with spicy, dark florals, as well as a hint of animal musk, which manages to ground the experience in the earth. On the palate, velvety textures, offset by tart red and black fruits, with juicy acidity maintain balance, as sweet cherries and rosemary give way to a core of minerality and hints of fine tannin. It finishes long and elegant, showing dark inner florals, ripe blackberry and lingering sweet spices. It’s interesting to taste this next to the classic Brunello from 2015, as I find them to be equally enjoyable, but for completely different reasons." Vinous

"Altesino's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli shows those celebrated characteristics of this special vineyard cru that are always portrayed with pronounced mineral intensity, with highlights of crushed granite and pencil shaving. Indeed, Altesino's five-hectare Montosoli vineyard sees a greater concentration of clay schist Galestro rock, and the vineyard altitude (at 350 meters above sea level) adds to the wine's perceived freshness. In this case, those mineral notes are applied with small brush strokes, as the core of the wine is occupied by wild fruit and forest berry. Medicinal herb and rosemary essence appear quietly at the back. This is a very compact and bright wine with young tannins and solid structure. It has all the attributes you look for in a candidate that can withstand long cellar aging. I'd suggest waiting five years or more before popping this cork." Robert Parker

"A very nuanced but powerful Brunello showing hibiscus, raspberry tea, gunpowder, petrichor, dried orange rind and spearmint. The rows of sharp tannins are very defined and agile, and the acidity is tensely strung up in overtures of vivacious red fruit. A beautiful, nimble Brunello 2015. Drink from 2024." James Suckling

“Antico Gregori” Vernaccia di Oristano DOC s. a.

Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori - a breathtaking blend of the best vintages. The base dates back to the beginning of the last century and has been refilled with the best Vernaccia selections from Contini. SUPERIORE.DE

"Armagnac-brown, sweet, intense, multi-layered nose, very inviting; powerful, mouth filling, great acidity, sweeping, pile and nutty taste, stays in the mouth for minutes; incredible wine! ... impossible not to pause during the tasting to enjoy this wine." Merum

"This is a precious, rare and, yes, costly Vernaccia that merits a closer look. This very unusual wine, the NV Vernaccia di Oristano Antico Gregori, is a cuvée of the best vintages spanning back over the past 40 years. It ages in oak, with some of it spending up to four decades in the barrel, producing a sweet wine that opens to a dark amber color with aromas of dried figs, honey, apricots and candied orange peel. It clocks in with a 18.5% alcohol content, about the same as your average Port, positioning it a digestif to be consumed on its own, or with a cigar. Only 1,000 bottles were made, and each one will pass the test of time because this wine is timeless in heart and soul." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 · MAGNUM

Altesino's Brunello di Montalcino 2015 is unique in terms of its aromatic charisma. The nose bewitches with mint, broom and herbal spices. On the palate it has subtle small red berries like wild berries and a little plum. Silky and flowing on the palate, an almost perfect balance and harmony with indescribable length and reverberation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium-bright, ripe red; ripe notes, depth, appealing; fullness, sweetness, ripe fruit, good depth, especially length, round tannin, pleasing." Merum

"Sparkling ruby grenade. Complex and inviting nose of blackberry, cinchona bark and dried orange peel. Round and smooth on the palate, opens with juicy, ripe berry fruit, well integrated tannin, good pressure in the final." Falstaff

"Aromas of underbrush, leather, camphor and wild berry form the nose. On the elegant, medium bodied palate, licorice and clove accent a core of juicy black cherry while polished tannins lend refined support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast

"Altesino's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers a rich yet classic expression of Sangiovese fruit, showing ripe red berries coated in dusty earth tones, with hints of leather and dried florals completing the picture. On the palate, brisk acids frame silky textures, creating a polished expression of red and black fruits, savory spice and saline-minerals. The finish is long yet fresh, as cooling mint and licorice tones carry remnants of red berry fruit hovering above a core of fine tannins." Vinous

"Terracotta, earth, iron filings, cedar and leather make for an undergrowth-driven Brunello 2015, which doesn’t fall short in the fruit department either, where there are red plums and red cherries. The tannins are neatly stacked, one on top of the other, with tidy acidity drawing in vibrant fruit and keeping it taut throughout. Balanced and stylish. Drink from 2023." James Suckling

"The Altesino 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows beautiful depth and latitude, with broad fruit aromas of dark cherry and cassis that recall the warmth and golden sunlight of the vintage. The wine is deceivingly streamlined in terms of mouthfeel, but that slim and buttoned-down backbone supports a broad range of flavors and sensations, from lavender essence and camphor ash to moist soil and toasted spice. All of these elements are delivered with impressive harmony and unity, and I expect that this wine will continue on a slow, steady and satisfying aging trajectory over the next 10 years or more. Fruit is sourced from across 21 hectares of vines with tufaceous limestone soils and Alberese rock, which contributes to the freshness and balanced structure of the wine." Robert Parker

    • "Sopra il Pozzo" Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015

“Sopra il Pozzo” Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015

Graci's new growth Sopra il Pozzo is a "selection from selection" and comes from the vineyard of Arcurìa. It is the red archetype of an Etna Rosso, a Nerello Cru with the unique DNA of the volcanic-stony terroir. Light ruby with orange reflexes, in the nose candied fruits, cooling firewood, some anise and herbs. On the palate it is silky without being smooth, its subtle wood and delicate acid wire harmonize perfectly with the flanking tannin to an unforgettable mineral and salty finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium-bright, warm red; mature-peppery, arouses curiosity; peppery-maturing, certain fullness, fine astringency." Merum

"Bright garnet red with a fine shimmer. Emphasizes fragrant nose, of rhubarb, pomegranate and raspberry. Bright on the palate, it shows a lot of present fruit, especially pomegranate and raspberry, then opens up with dense, pithy tannin, firm pressure and long final, in the final accentuated salty notes". Falstaff

"Pale ruby-garnet. Ripe, scented maraschino cherry, with hazelnut and subtle smoky complexity. Sweet-savoury, flinty cherry palate fruit, with sandy, firm tannic structure and quite bright acidity. Long, smoky-spicy finish. Power over elegance." Jancis Robinson

"This was the first vintage of an outstanding parcel within Arcuria that henceforth is bottled separately. For all the excellence of the regular 2015, this is different, with richer raspberry aromas and greater aromatic weight. It's very elegant and silky, highly concentrated with fine acidity. It's more skeletal now than the regular wine: taut, lingering and very long." Decanter

"This is a new wine from Alberto Graci with fruit sourced from the part of his vineyard holding located "above the well" in the Contrada Arcuria not too far from the Graci winery. The beautiful 2015 Etna Rosso Arcurìa Sopra il Pozzo pours from the bottle with medium intensity and mild ruby intensity. You might mistake this wine for a Pinot Noir or Nebbiolo if you were to judge by appearance alone. However, the bouquet shows that strong volcanic character that is unmistakable in the red wines from Etna; wild berries, blue flowers, red currant, licorice, mountain herbs and crushed stone all play leading roles on the bouquet." "Altesino's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Montosoli shows those celebrated characteristics of this special vineyard cru that are always portrayed with pronounced mineral intensity, with highlights of crushed granite and pencil shaving.

    • "Sopra il Pozzo" Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015 <br> 3 Bottles in OWC

“Sopra il Pozzo” Rosso Arcurìa Etna DOC 2015 · 3 Bottles in OWC

Graci's new growth Sopra il Pozzo is a "selection from selection" and comes from the vineyard of Arcurìa. It is the red archetype of an Etna Rosso, a Nerello Cru with the unique DNA of the volcanic-stony terroir. Light ruby with orange reflexes, in the nose candied fruits, cooling firewood, some anise and herbs. On the palate it is silky without being smooth, its subtle wood and delicate acid wire harmonize perfectly with the flanking tannin to an unforgettable, mineral and salty finish.

However, the bouquet shows that strong volcanic character that is unmistakable in the red wines from Etna; wild berries, blue flowers, red currant, licorice, mountain herbs and crushed stone all play leading roles on the bouquet." Things to know aboutMerum
    Merum

Merum, the Italian magazine for wine, olive oil, travel and food, has been writing completely independently, competently and critically about wine and olive oil for 25 years, and also about Italian topics, which other magazines leave behind.

For more than 25 years, the Merum editors around editor-in-chief Andreas März have been passionately reporting on famous and unknown appellations, researching directly on site, selecting the best Barolo, Brunello, Chianti Classico etc. for the readers, and at the same time being committed to less prominent wines such as Vernatsch, Grignolino, Raboso, Lambrusco and, of course, quality olive oil. The articles never just scratch the surface, but provide background knowledge and details that are useful to readers when making purchases and travelling to Italy.

Merum is not a commercial product, let's call it an immodest cultural product. What is written in Merum is not embellished, sometimes perhaps undiplomatic, even ruthless in the tastings, and uncompromising in the values for which the makers stand. Merum does not seek broad consensus and circulation at any price, but works forward in the service of its subscribers on a journalistic course with which they do not always have to identify, but on whose transparency, reliability and independence they can build. The Swiss small publisher is interested in values that should be strengthened and not in profits that should be maximized.

Founder and editor-in-chief Andreas März is Swiss, who owns a small farm in Tuscany, where he himself produces one of the best olive oils in Italy and a little wine. In the past, he has built a solid editorial team around himself. Like himself, all editors are completely independent, contentious and constantly on the lookout for the best quality.

Some MERUM creations enjoy great popularity, such as the little word "beaver wine", which is used to describe wines that have been given too much "toasting" from barrique barrels and thus fall through the evaluation grid. Or the JLF test, at which wines are served hidden on the table for the joint dinner of the editorial staff and also at regular reader meetings in Tuscany, and then the centimetres of remaining wine are measured with a ruler: The emptier the bottle (the better the wine).

At MERUM, only wines that have a high "drinking factor" in addition to grape variety typicity and terroir fidelity are rated positively. Wines that speak the clear language of their origins and are a lot of fun. The actual wine evaluation is published in the middle of the issue as Merum-Selezione and is evaluated with one to three hearts. Each year the extensive MERUM paperbacks "Italy's Best Wines" and "Italy's Best Olive Oils" are published and each issue is accompanied by a Degu Box containing the best wines from the respective theme tastings.
