      “Torrione” Rosso Toscana IGT 2015

Bright garnet red. In the nose plums and sour cherries, accompanied by tobacco nuances. The finely woven tannins combine wonderfully with the notes of red fruits and liquorice in the finish. Very clear and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE

"On the ripe and sweet side, the 2015 Val d'Arno di Sopra Torrione is a terrific, easy-drinking red wine made near Arezzo in Tuscany. The bouquet is soft and sunny with red fruit aromas, cherry and crème de cassis. The wine offers a mid-weight finish with bright acidity that is characteristic of Sangiovese." Robert Parker

"Lovely aromas of sweet fruit, flowers such as violets and black olives. Sandalwood undertones. Full body and extremely fine tannins. Persistent and sexy. Shows such intensity and finesse." James Suckling

"The 2015 Torrione is gorgeous. Bright fruit and expressive floral notes give the Torrione striking energy. Hints of smoke, tobacco and game add further shades of complexity as the wine gains volume and nuance with air. Above all else, though, what stands out is an emphasis on energy that is quite a departure from the Petrolo style of years past. The 2015 is a winner. Don’t miss it." VINOUS

"This is lean and taut, with cherry, leather, tobacco, earth and iron flavors. Leans to the dry side in the end, but has depth and character. Turns more elegant and complex with air." Wine Spectator

"Petrolo's Torrione is quite pretty and gracious in 2016. Aromatically expressive and pliant, this Sangiovese-based entry-level offering has a lot to offer. Dollops of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon round out this juicy Sangiovese-based blend." Antonio Galloni

"Fresh earth and graphite aromas lead off in this version, finding its feet with cherry, raspberry, currant and floral notes midpalate. Hints of earth, mineral and tobacco add depth as this plays out on the finish. Shows fine elegance and harmony." Wine Spectator

"Dried herbs on the nose, together with blackberry and cherry. Bright and complex in the mouth with flavours of dark chocolate, dark fruits and some dried herbs." Decanter

"The bouquet opens to ripe cherry and dried raspberry with moist earth, exotic spice and chewing tobacco. The wine is plush and rich with a hint of that tangy Sangiovese acidity on the close." Robert Parker

"Aromas of dried flowers, dried berries, cherries and hints of stones. Full-bodied, very firm and silky. An intense underlying energy of acidity and a lovely finish. One of the best ever?" James Suckling

“Bòggina C” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2015

The C in the name of the Boggina stands for the Classico, matured for about 18 months in the large wood and tonneau: in the bouquet the whole fullness of Sangiovese - sour cherry, plum, diverse floral notes and spices. The filigree tannins lend elegance to the palate, accompanied by subtle nuances of mint and chocolate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sour cherry, tea and tobacco aromas. Bright, juicy fruit core on a finessed palate with herbal complexity. Good length." Decanter

"A dense and beautiful young sangiovese with dried cherry, orange rind and flowers. Full body, tight and silky with a long and seamless finish. Tannic and structured. A fantastic sangiovese. Aged in cask. No new wood. Give it two to three years to soften." James Suckling

"Sangiovese from the central rows of Petrolo’s Bòggina vineyard ferments in cement tanks and rests in a mix of large French oak casks and tonneaux for 18 months, giving a wine with dark cherry flavors accented by black spice. It feels woodsy and earthy, with lively acidity and a cooling ferrous tone." Wine&Spirits

“Bòggina C” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2016 (BIO)

The C in the name of the Boggina stands for the "Classico" which was built in the large wood and tonneau for about 18 months: In the bouquet the whole fullness of Sangiovese - sour cherry, plum, diverse floral notes and spices. The delicate tannins lend elegance to the palate, yet it is the archetype of a tight and wonderfully precise Sangiovese with impressive depth. SUPERIORE.DE

"This vibrant, balanced red is rich, with plum, cherry, iron and tobacco notes. Firms up nicely, suggesting a decade or more of development ahead, ending with a tangy aftertaste of fruit and mineral." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Bòggina C, 100% Sangiovese vinified in cement and aged in oak, is a total knock-out. Readers will find a wine endowed with fabulous richness and depth. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and espresso all flesh out in a generous, deeply expressive wine that is ample and nuanced at the same time." Antonio Galloni

"The 2016 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a pure expression of Sangiovese from vines planted in 1952. Give the wine a little time to open in the glass; once it does, it offers a beautiful display of forest fruit, spice, leather and earthy tones. Unlike the Bòggina A that is aged in amphorae, the Bòggina C is fermented in concrete vats using ambient yeasts. It sees extended maceration times and is aged in French 40-hectoliter casks and tonneaux. Some 11,000 bottles were made. This single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese reveals impeccable balance and elegance." Robert Parker

"This is so focused and precise with fantastic depth and beauty. A pure definition of sangiovese. Full-bodied, tight and refined. Yet, full of strength and length. Succulent, too. A single-vineyard wine with soul." James Suckling

    • "Bòggina A" Sangiovese Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC 2016 (BIO)

“Bòggina A” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2016 (BIO)

The A in the name of the Boggina stands for the natural wine aged in terracotta amphoras of 400-600 litres each for approx. 6 months, which is bottled in a quantity of just 1,200 bottles without any further addition of sulphites. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2016 Bòggina A is 100% Sangiovese done in amphora. Crushed flowers, dried rose petals, mint, sweet tobacco and savory herbs give the wine much of its distinctive, pungent personality. Time in the glass helps soften some of the more angular contours that are present initially, while also allowing the aromatics to fully emerge." Antonio Galloni

"This is elegant, offering cherry, plum, tobacco, leather and earth flavors, backed by lively acidity. Harmonious and long, echoing the leather and tobacco elements, with a hint of mineral." Wine Spectator

"Extremely refined and beautiful with tight density of fruit and polished, linear tannins. Full to medium body and a bright, beautiful finish. Iron and stones, too. Made in amphora." James Suckling

"Aged in amphorae, the 2016 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A is a pure expression of Sangiovese. The wine is beautifully ethereal, delicate and fragile, showing focused purity and intensity at the same time. In a nutshell, this wine embraces all the best characteristic of this iconic vintage, especially in terms of the crystalline authenticity of its varietal aromas. Luca Sanjust experimented with Spanish clay vessels and then went back to Tuscan terracotta amphorae made with clay from Impruneta (not far from Florence). This wine is light and luminous with mid-weight texture but a very long and silky finish. It is a true beauty." Robert Parker

"Very perfumed aromas of plum, dried berry, cedar, and flower. Full body, with velvety tannins and a juicy finish. Love the texture and richness to this wine. Fascinating smoky undertone. Amphora gives it a life and energy of its own. No wood." James Suckling

"Bright ruby of pale to medium intensity. Warm, fragrant, almost burnt aromas and real texture and tension. The wine really does taste as though it had little bits of clay dissolved in it – but rather agreeably. Long and vibrant." Jancis Robinson

"Bòggina A originated in 2011, when Sanjust decided to ferment and age a portion of the wine in amphorae. The 2015 Bòggina A is a delicious rendering of unadorned sangiovese, its fresh red-cherry flavors brimming with vibrant acidity. Lean and taut at first, the wine fleshes out with exposure to air, evolving into darker fruit tones tinged with anise and fennel." Wine&Spirits

“Campo Lusso” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Campo Lusso, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard of the same name, is another Grand Cru from Petrolo. The small location covers only half a hectare under the tower of Galatrona. The natural terrace offers exremely favourable soil and climatic conditions. Only about 1,300 bottles of this spectacular drop can be produced per vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mineral, mint and blackcurrant aromas and flavors. Full and structured with lots of ripe and racy tannins yet refined and beautiful. Really polished and fine, ending with an attractively long finish. Drink or hold. The magic continues."James Suckling

"A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Campo Lusso is a dark and savory red wine that offers a sophisticated and quiet demeanor. The wine takes a while to open, and once it does, it maintains a certain air of distance, restraint and formality. This characteristic seems to reflect the wine's inner heart and soul. It offers evolved aromas of dried blackberry, cured meat and exotic spice. The finish is dry, linear and direct. This is a very unique expression of the grape that explores the introspective side of the otherwise charming and boisterous Luca Sanjust. I would recommend a few more years of cellar aging."Robert Parker

Galatrona is a distinctly terroir-typical Merlot. Deep, fleshy scent of ripe, dark fruits and fine spicy tones. Its compact taste and dense tannin show its enormous potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich, impenetrable ruby violet. Very intense and compact nose, full of blueberries, blackberries and dark currants, in the background cardamom and moist forest soil. On the palate it shows fine-meshed, pithy tannin, juicy, dark fruit, to bite into, shows considerable length." Falstaff

"The polish and fine texture to this 2014 is impressive with blueberry, dark chocolate and light walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body, integrated tannins and a long, refined finish. Serious sense for the vintage." James Suckling

"Petrolo’s 2014 Galatrona is impressive. Medium in body, with striking aromatic presence and depth, the 2014 is all class. Exotic spice, rose petal, mint and red plum give the 2014 its air of cool sophistication. A bit rough around the edges, the 2014 could use a bit of time in bottle to allow the tannins to soften a touch. This is a very strong showing from Petrolo." Antonio Galloni

The natural terrace offers exremely favourable soil and climatic conditions. Only about 1,300 bottles of this spectacular drop can be produced per vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"A cabernet sauvignon with fabulous purity and fineness but a dense center palate with amazing silky tannins. It reminds me of a top Diamond Creek from Napa with its mountain cab style and hot-stone and iodine undertones. It's full-bodied with mindblowing integrity and polish. A wonderful expression of cabernet in central Tuscany. Only 600 bottles made. Try to get some." James Suckling

    • "Galatrona" Merlot Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC 2016

“Galatrona” Merlot Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2016

He's never been better. Galatrona is a pure Merlot of the extra class. With the 2016 edition, owner Luca Sanjust achieved an absolute masterpiece. Black-red ruby in the glass. In the bouquet black berries, fine wood spice and some leather. Very generous fruit aromas and extremely complex on the palate, it glides elegantly into the depths until it is caught by a finely woven tannin and merges into a long and finesse rich finish. A wine that doesn't have to hide behind Masseto & Co., on the contrary it has been Italy's Merlot benchmark for years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Powerful, sparkling ruby violet. Very clear and catchy nose, full of blackberries, dark currants and ripe blueberries, with fine resinous components and tobacco. Fresh and with a lot of juicy, ripe berry fruit at the base, then opens with a lot of fine-meshed, dense tannin, salty and very long." Falstaff

"This is full of enticing blackberry, blueberry and plum flavors, with a spine of acidity, iron accents and beefy tannins. Long and well-proportioned, this needs time to integrate. Tobacco and spice hints detail the finish." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Galatrona (Merlot) is fabulous. Powerful, dense and layered, the 2016 brings together serious fruit intensity and energy, as is so typical of this important Tuscan vintage. A whole range of floral and spice notes develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. I have long felt Galatrona is released too early. The 2016 is a perfect example of that. Opening a bottle now is a crime." Antonio Galloni

"The aromas of dried flowers, stones, dark tea leaves, hot tile, and dark berries. Full-bodied, yet tight and linear. Wonderful drive and depth. An extremely long and focused finish. A great wine." James Suckling

"The 2016 Galatrona is indeed a masterpiece to behold. This wine offers thick layering and deep intensity with aromas that offer an incredible range, starting off with luscious dark chocolate on one side and ending with fragrant white truffle on the far end of its long aromatic trajectory. You get plummy fruit, spice, sweet tobacco and tilled earth packed tight in between. This full-bodied Merlot is softly textured and succulent with long-lasting flavor intensity on the close. Petrolo's Merlot is planted in a ten-hectare parcel distinguished by thick clay soils. I have been watching Galatrona's evolution for years and have tasted the wine on occasion in various vertical tastings. This is my favorite vintage made thus far." Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Fattoria Petrolo
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Fattoria Petrolo

The traditional Petrolo winery is one of the very few wineries that has been consistently awarded top marks by all renowned Italian wine critics for years. Actually the Fattoria belongs to the Chianti zone of the Colli Aretini. But since the 1996 vintage, the current owner and art historian Luca Sanjust has gladly renounced this appeal. He is convinced that the production there does not meet his strict quality requirements. Thus, Sanjust's wines - such as the Sangiovese based Torrione - are marketed as IGT and his other wines under the name of the still relatively young DOC Val d'Arno di Sopra.

The Fattoria is located in the middle of Tuscany between Florence and Arezzo. It covers a total of 272 hectares, of which 31 hectares are used for vineyards. The vines are situated at an altitude between 250 and 450 metres above sea level. The Galestro soils are typical of the Apennine region of Tuscany.

Since the Middle Ages, the estate has been owned by the famous Tuscan dynasty Galatrona, of whose buildings the ancient tower has survived to this day. The Torre di Galatrona, which lends its name to the house's cellar star from Merlot, is already based on Etruscan origins.

In the 1940s the estate was acquired by the Bazzocchi family. Lucia Bazzocchi Sanjust and her son Luca decided at the end of the 1980s to convert production to the highest quality level. Luca has gathered a team of respected experts around him. Stefano Guidi is the oenologist at Fattoria, Carlo Nesterini is an agronomist who is mainly responsible for the vineyards and Carlo Ferrini, the Chianti expert, has been recruited as an external consultant. SUPERIORE.DE

"It is no coincidence that the winery has been romping around in the upper echelons of the Tuscan wine league for years ... In all production phases, but especially in the vineyard, meticulous care is taken here." Gambero Rosso

"Luca Sanjust has long been working with extended skin macerations, amphorae and a non-interventionist's approach. He is a historian of local wine culture and ampelography. Indeed, he is one of the most vocal proponents of the recently established Val d'Arno di Sopra appellation." Robert Parker
