“Inarno” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

Inarno is a joint project of friendly neighbouring winegrowers of the region, who deliver the grapes and Petrolo, who do the handicraft and authentic vinification. A traditionally made and yet modern, fresh Sangiovese full of beauty and generosity in its aroma and richness. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Inarno is juicy, boisterous and flat out delicious. Super-ripe red cherry, leather, cedar, spice and tobacco all race out of the glass in a plush, forward wine with tremendous appeal. Best of all Inarno is a ridiculous value." Vinous

    • "Torrione" Pietraviva Rosso Val d'Arno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

“Torrione” Pietraviva Rosso Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

Brilliant ruby red with brick-red reflections. In the nose plums and sour cherries, accompanied by tobacco nuances and dried purple flowers. The finely woven tannins combine wonderfully with the notes of red fruits and liquorice in the finish. Very juicy, clear and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE

"Petrolo's 2018 Torrione is fabulous. Deep, inky and generous, the 2018 packs a serious punch. Ripe dark red fruit, chocolate, spice, leather and tobacco are all kicked up a few notches, with sweet floral top notes that add aromatic lift. The 2018 is an especially boisterous Torrione, with all the elements in the right place. In a word: delicious." Vinous

"This is such a fun edition of this wine with a fluttering heart sketched onto the front label. I imagine that the heart could be dedicated to proprietor Luca Sanjust's rambunctious mother who recently passed away. The wine opens to a dark and rich appearance with punchy aromas of tart cherry and wild berry. Warm aromas of tobacco, spice and cedar wood appear gradually as the wine opens in the glass." Robert Parker

"A red with plenty of blackberry, black-olive, floral and oyster-shell character. It’s full-bodied, yet layered, extremely polished and beautiful. A dusty texture. Hazelnut and walnut undertones. From organically grown grapes. A little more merlot and cabernet sauvignon in the blend." James Suckling

The filigree tannins lend elegance to the palate, accompanied by subtle nuances of mint and chocolate. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sour cherry, tea and tobacco aromas. Bright, juicy fruit core on a finessed palate with herbal complexity. Good length." Decanter

"A dense and beautiful young sangiovese with dried cherry, orange rind and flowers. Full body, tight and silky with a long and seamless finish. Tannic and structured. A fantastic sangiovese. Aged in cask. No new wood. Give it two to three years to soften." James Suckling

"Sangiovese from the central rows of Petrolo’s Bòggina vineyard ferments in cement tanks and rests in a mix of large French oak casks and tonneaux for 18 months, giving a wine with dark cherry flavors accented by black spice. It feels woodsy and earthy, with lively acidity and a cooling ferrous tone." Wine&Spirits

“Bòggina C” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

The C in the name of the Boggina stands for the "Classico", aged for about 18 months in large wood and tonneau: In the bouquet the whole fullness of Sangiovese - sour cherry, plum, various floral notes and spices. The filigree tannins give elegance on the palate, yet it is the archetype of a taut and wonderfully precise Sangiovese with impressive depth. SUPERIORE.DE

"The purity of fruit is just right in this red with dried berries, dried leaves, terracotta and dried tobacco. Some smoke, too. It’s full-bodied, yet vivid and focused. No new wood. From organically grow grapes from a single vineyard. A beauty and so drinkable now, but will improve nicely with age." James Suckling

"From old-vine (and organic) Sangiovese planted in 1952, the Petrolo 2018 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a gorgeous wine with thick flavors and dark saturation. This is a beautiful expression - polished, bright and intense. It offers pure fruit flavors of wild cherry, cassis, dried basil, crushed flower and candied orange skin. The wine is silky and mid-weight in texture, but it produces a very long and polished finish. This wine hits all the proverbial Sangiovese high notes." Robert Parker

"The 2018 Bòggina C (Bòggina Classico) is another superb wine from Petrolo. Here, Sangiovese is aged in oak, which gives the wine more mid-palate depth and broader shoulders, which, frankly, the wine seems to benefit from. Dark cherry, licorice, leather, spice and menthol build as the 2018 shows everything its got. Impressive." Vinous

The filigree tannins give elegance on the palate, yet it is the archetype of a taut and wonderfully precise Sangiovese with impressive depth. SUPERIORE.DE

"Savoury iodine cherry fruit on the nose with touches of spicy and savoury rather than sweet oak. Hints of Moroccan leather and minerally notes. Sappy red-fruit palate with a cool edge and just medium-bodied feel. Gritty tannins adding depth." Jancis Robinson

"This vibrant, balanced red is rich, with plum, cherry, iron and tobacco notes. Firms up nicely, suggesting a decade or more of development ahead, ending with a tangy aftertaste of fruit and mineral." Wine Spectator

"The 2016 Bòggina C, 100% Sangiovese vinified in cement and aged in oak, is a total knock-out. Readers will find a wine endowed with fabulous richness and depth. Black cherry, plum, lavender, spice and espresso all flesh out in a generous, deeply expressive wine that is ample and nuanced at the same time." VINOUS

"The 2016 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina C is a pure expression of Sangiovese from vines planted in 1952. Give the wine a little time to open in the glass; once it does, it offers a beautiful display of forest fruit, spice, leather and earthy tones. Unlike the Bòggina A that is aged in amphorae, the Bòggina C is fermented in concrete vats using ambient yeasts. It sees extended maceration times and is aged in French 40-hectoliter casks and tonneaux. Some 11,000 bottles were made. This single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese reveals impeccable balance and elegance." Robert Parker

"This is so focused and precise with fantastic depth and beauty. A pure definition of sangiovese. Full-bodied, tight and refined. Yet, full of strength and length. Succulent, too. A single-vineyard wine with soul." James Suckling

“Bòggina A” Sangiovese Val d’Arno di Sopra DOC 2018 (BIO)

The A in the name of the Boggina stands for the natural wine matured for about 6 months in terracotta amphorae of 400-600 Liters, which is bottled without the addition of sulfites in a run of just 1,200 bottles. Bright, bright garnet red. In the bouquet ethereal, very filigree and nuanced, with a very precise interpretation of the scent of the Sangiovese grape. In the drink it is of medium weight, with a very beautiful structure and authentic Sangiovese fruit. In the finish of high drinking flow, with silky tannin and beguiling length. A masterpiece of beauty and elegance. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Bòggina A (Bògginanfora) offers a striking expression of Sangiovese. Sweet red cherry, mint, orange peel and cinnamon all grace this silky, mid-weight wine from Petrolo and proprietor Luca Sanjust. The translucent beauty of Sangiovese comes through loud and clear. The Bòggina A (Bògginanfora) is 100% Sangiovese fermented and aged in amphora. What a gorgeous wine." Vinous

"The Petrolo 2018 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A is Sangiovese that has been aged in amphorae. The Bòggina A is pure and punchy in its fruit intensity, with chiseled aromas of wild cherry and dried rose potpourri. The wine offers very soft and subdued tannins, with the natural structure and staying power coming from the crunchy healthiness of the fruit." Robert Parker

"The purity of fruit here is impressive with cherries, plums and highlights of grilled meat and wet earth. Some tile, too. Full-bodied with chewy tannins that are pure and polished. Lots of fruit at the end, but not overdone. From organically grown grapes. Fermented and aged in amphora." James Suckling

"Bright, bright garnet red. Opened with a pronounced earthy note, followed by cranberries and raspberries. On the palate a lot of fine-meshed tannin, interwoven with fine enamel, very clear and juicy." Falstaff

"The 2016 Bòggina A is 100% Sangiovese done in amphora. Crushed flowers, dried rose petals, mint, sweet tobacco and savory herbs give the wine much of its distinctive, pungent personality. Time in the glass helps soften some of the more angular contours that are present initially, while also allowing the aromatics to fully emerge." VINOUS

"This is elegant, offering cherry, plum, tobacco, leather and earth flavors, backed by lively acidity. Harmonious and long, echoing the leather and tobacco elements, with a hint of mineral." Wine Spectator

"Extremely refined and beautiful with tight density of fruit and polished, linear tannins. Full to medium body and a bright, beautiful finish. Iron and stones, too. Made in amphora." James Suckling

"Aged in amphorae, the 2016 Val d'Arno di Sopra Bòggina A is a pure expression of Sangiovese. The wine is beautifully ethereal, delicate and fragile, showing focused purity and intensity at the same time. In a nutshell, this wine embraces all the best characteristic of this iconic vintage, especially in terms of the crystalline authenticity of its varietal aromas. Luca Sanjust experimented with Spanish clay vessels and then went back to Tuscan terracotta amphorae made with clay from Impruneta (not far from Florence). This wine is light and luminous with mid-weight texture but a very long and silky finish. It is a true beauty." Robert Parker

The 2015 Bòggina A is a delicious rendering of unadorned sangiovese, its fresh red-cherry flavors brimming with vibrant acidity. • "Bòggina B" Trebbiano Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Bòggina B” Trebbiano Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

Bòggina Bianco is an extremely tasty and fresh Trebbiano of vines about 50 years old. It was born from Luca Sanjust's meeting with Lucien Le Moine (Mounir Souma), a great producer in Burgundy, who with his inspiration and know-how contributed significantly to the success of this extraordinary project. The vinification takes place in French oak barrels and tonneaux, which were specially made for this wine and selected by Lucien Le Moine. The wine remains "sur lies" (on the lees) for the entire maturation period of over 2 years, which gives it an incredibly fresh aroma and harmony. An extremely rare exceptional white wine, produced in a very small edition of just 1,000 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE

"Posh oak and lemon nose with notes of hazelnuts. A hint of petrol, which might indicate the very hot year. Viscous lemon and green-apple palate with citric acidity. Tight and linear palate upholstered with ripe lemon fruit. The plentiful oak is well integrated in the lemon-curd aromas on the finish. Lemony lusciousness." Jancis Robinson

"A cellar-worthy expression of Trebbiano Toscano, the 2017 Bòggina B sees extended aging on the lees to create a creamy and generous medium to full-bodied white wine. The Etruscan-named Bòggina opens to a light golden color followed by Mediterranean aromas of stone fruit, apricot and candied orange peel. That sur lie aging contributes to the honey-like fattiness or creaminess of the wine that is played up a notch higher in a hot and dry vintage such as this, which resulted in extra fruit concentration. Trebbiano, with its loose clusters, is harvested immediately before Sangiovese. There are documents that trace the existence of Trebbiano in this part of Tuscany back to the 13th century. In fact, the grape was widely popular back then, and fruit from the vineyards near the Petrolo estate fetched top dollar." Robert Parker

"The 2017 vintage of Luca Sanjust’s Bòggina Bianco one again makes the case that this is one of the best whites of Tuscany. The complex perfumes of white pepper, chalk, flint, pear tart, green apples, white chocolate and smoke are stunning. Then comes an incredibly linear texture that’s so vertical it could cut your mouth in two. Cutting, sweeping acidity makes an indent in the palate, which it expertly fills with praline, almond and nutmeg undertones. Full-bodied and very, very long on the finish with a well-judged play between oxidation and reduction." James Suckling

    • "Bòggina B" Trebbiano Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)

“Bòggina B” Trebbiano Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)

This is an extremely rare exceptional white wine, which is only produced in small editions of about 1,000 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Bòggina B (Bòggina Bianco) is bright, focused and full of energy. Lemon peel, crushed rocks, mint and white pepper come alive in a wine that combines sizzling energy and depth. A hint of reduction remains, but it adds character without dominating the wine's balance. Wow!" Vinous

"This is a niche wine that will capture your heart and mind. The Petrolo 2018 Bòggina B is a pure expression of Trebbiano that is aged carefully on the lees to add to its aromatic intensity and complexity. Trebbiano can sometimes produce viscous and waxy wines, but that's not the case here. This is a beautifully pure and sophisticated expression that offers honey, peach, acacia flower, toasted almond and spicy saffron. The aromas are delivered with extreme focus and sharpness, and that's the main takeaway of this vintage. Fresh acidity and racy mineral notes give this white wine the power to cut through an epic spaghetti alle vongole. If you don't already know Bòggina B, I highly recommend you try it." Robert Parker

"This white offers serious layers of fruit and acidity with fantastically complex apples, honey blossom, nuts and walnuts on the nose and palate. It’s full-bodied, yet fresh and vivid. Acidity and fruit is all there. Soulful is the word. An exceptional wine that shows such complexity and beauty." James Suckling

    • "Campo Lusso" Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

“Campo Lusso” Rosso Toscana IGT 2013

Campo Lusso, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard of the same name, is another Grand Cru from Petrolo. The small location covers only half a hectare under the tower of Galatrona. The natural terrace offers exremely favourable soil and climatic conditions. Only about 1,300 bottles of this spectacular drop can be produced per vintage. SUPERIORE.DE

"Mineral, mint and blackcurrant aromas and flavors. Full and structured with lots of ripe and racy tannins yet refined and beautiful. Really polished and fine, ending with an attractively long finish. Drink or hold. The magic continues."James Suckling

"A pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2013 Campo Lusso is a dark and savory red wine that offers a sophisticated and quiet demeanor. The wine takes a while to open, and once it does, it maintains a certain air of distance, restraint and formality. This characteristic seems to reflect the wine's inner heart and soul. It offers evolved aromas of dried blackberry, cured meat and exotic spice. The finish is dry, linear and direct. This is a very unique expression of the grape that explores the introspective side of the otherwise charming and boisterous Luca Sanjust. I would recommend a few more years of cellar aging."Robert Parker

    About the winemakers
    Fattoria Petrolo
    Tuscany | Chianti
    Fattoria Petrolo

The Torre di Galatrona, which gives its name to the top wine of the Fattoria Petrolo, is visible from afar. Between Florence and Arezzo flows the Arno. The Val d'Arno, a historically always contested, fertile area, for centuries characterized by olives, wine and forests, is rich in former castles and forts. The Tower of Galatrona probably dates back to an Etruscan stronghold. And it adorns the labels of the Fattoria Petrolo, to whose lands it now belongs.

The winery, which has won many awards, has been part of the DOC Valdarno di Sopra since 2011. At last, they remembered and gave this region its historic name again. In 1716, Cosimo II de Medici named Val d'Arno di Sopra as one of the four best zones for olive and wine growing in Tuscany. For decades, the region was known as the Chianti Colli Aretini, the hills of Arezzo. However, the provisions of this region were too casual for the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, who acquired the estate in the late 1940s. Lucia Bazzocci and her son Luca Sanjust, who now runs the winery, decided at the end of the 1980s to trim production to the highest quality and therefore left the Consorzio. For years the wines were therefore labelled as Rosso Toscana IGT. Which did not prevent international critics from awarding up to 99 points. James Suckling even named Galatrona 2015 the second best wine in the world.

The Fattoria Petrolo is situated at an altitude of between 250 and 450 metres above sea level. Of the 272 hectares of land, 26 hectares are planted with vines. The oldest vineyards date back to 1947, and most of the vines were replanted in the 1990s following analyses carried out by Prof. Scienza of the University of Milan. With up to 5,500 vines per hectare, but with a yield of only 25 hl/ha. This results in about 70,000 bottles per year. The Galestro soils are typical of the Apennine region of Tuscany, but here they are interspersed with slate, limestone, clay and sandstone and are characterised by minerals.

In addition to the leading variety Sangiovese and small quantities of old autochthonous, almost extinct varieties, Merlot, from which the highly awarded Galatrona is pressed as a pure variety, as well as a little Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot are planted. The Cabernet Sauvignon stands in the highest position below the tower at about 500 m above sea level and is a bush culture, here called Albarello. Some Malvasia and Trebbiano complete the range. The white grapes are not only used to produce a very exquisite and rare Vin Santo, but also, with the help of Lucien le Moine from Burgundy, a white wine ("Boggina B") which is quite exceptional for Tuscany. In the last two decades Luca Sanjust has often broken new ground. Today you can find many a terracotta amphora in the most modernly equipped cellar, in addition to cement tanks for fermentation and wooden barrels of various sizes, from the classic large "Botte" to tonneaux and barriques. Depending on grape variety, location or cuvée.

Luca has gathered a team of renowned experts around him. Stefano Guidi and Simone Cuccoli are the Fattoria's oenologists, Carlo Nesterini is an agronomist who looks after the vineyards, and no less than the great Chianti connoisseur Carlo Ferrini has been recruited as an external consultant. For more than 20 years, some of the vineyards have been cultivated organically, and since 2016, all the grapes have been certified organic. The committed goal is to convert the entire DOC Valdarno di Sopra to organic cultivation and thus become a pioneer in Italy. A good idea.  SUPERIORE.DE

"It is no coincidence that the winery has been romping around in the upper echelons of the Tuscan wine league for years ... In all production phases, but especially in the vineyard, meticulous care is taken here." Gambero Rosso"

Luca Sanjust has long been working with extended skin macerations, amphorae and a non-interventionist's approach. He is a historian of local wine culture and ampelography. Indeed, he is one of the most vocal proponents of the recently established Val d'Arno di Sopra appellation." Robert Parker
