“Torrione” Rosso Toscana IGT 2021 (BIO)
Radiant ruby red with brick-red reflections. Plums and sour cherries on the nose, underpinned by tobacco nuances and dried violet flowers. The fine-meshed tannins combine wonderfully with the notes of red fruits and liquorice on the finish. Very juicy, clear and balanced. SUPERIORE.DE

Bòggina Bianco is an extremely deep, spicy and fresh Trebbiano from approximately 50-year-old vines. It was born from Luca Sanjust's meeting with Lucien Le Moine (Mounir Souma), a great producer in Burgundy, who contributed significantly to the success of this exceptional project with inspiration and know-how. Vinification takes place in French oak barrels and tonneaux specially made for this wine and selected by Lucien Le Moine. The wine remains "sur lies" (on the lees) for the entire ageing period of over 2 years, which gives it an immensely fresh aroma and harmony. An extremely rare and very delicious exceptional white wine, which is only produced in a small edition of a few 1,000 bottles. SUPERIORE.DE

The exceptional 2019 harvest has prompted Luca Sanjust to take another step towards "quality without compromise". The yields per plant were reduced even further and the selection of grapes from the identified parcel was made even more rigorous. This led to a reduction in the number of bottles available to around 3,000. The same meticulousness was applied in the cellar, selecting the most suitable 7 hectolitre barrels for ageing "sur lie". The greatest attention was paid to their wood grain and "toasting" in order to achieve the harmony and taste that a pure Grand Cru Sangiovese should have.
Bòggina C Riserva uniquely highlights the fragrance, brightness and expressive depth of Sangiovese from the Bòggina vineyard. This version highlights the inimitable and unmistakable character of this wine, which originates in the midst of the Chianti mountains overlooking the Val d'Arno di Sopra, from where it derives the unmistakable magic of its aromas, its colours and its brightness. A wine that not only warms Luca's heart, but also shows the great path that the winery has been following for years.
With the 2019 vintage, it now becomes a Riserva for the first time. For this occasion, it also received a new label, derived from a painting by the artist Sabina Mirri, who specially made it. “Campo Lusso” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)
Campo Lusso, a Cabernet Sauvignon from the vineyard of the same name, is another Grand Cru from Petrolo. The small location covers only half a hectare under the tower of Galatrona. The natural terrace offers extremely favourable soil and climatic conditions. Only about 1,300 bottles of this spectacular drop can be produced per vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
"The full-bodied 2016 Campo Lusso is absolutely gorgeous. This is a dark and generous expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that is grounded and centered, but so intense all the while. The bouquet is layered and rich with dark fruit, spice, leather, tar and chocolate. Campo Lusso is a beautiful expression of this French grape from Tuscany. The tannins are velvety and impeccably integrated. First produced in 2004, this wine sees fruit sourced from an isolated vineyard spot located just under the Galatrona tower (at 500 meters above sea level). Farmers referred to this site as the "campo lusso," or luxury site, because of the ideal soil composition of rocky limestone. The small vineyard is located at an altitude of 500 m above the Galatrona Tower and offers the best conditions for growing the French grape variety Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to the limestone subsoil, this site is also called a luxury site (campo lusso). Intense and generous bouquet of dark fruits, leather and chocolate. Complex and deep on the palate, very focused and with increasing aeration very elegant and aristocratic. A complete red that will delight not only Cabernet lovers. In 2001, Luca Sanjust unceremoniously renamed his Vinsanto del Chianti "San Petrolo Passito Bianco", as he was no longer willing to put up with the uncompromising and incomprehensible views of the consortium on the specification of a Vin Santo del Chianti Classico. For some of the analytical values (sugar, acidity, alcohol content) of his exceptional dessert wine did not correspond to the rigid specifications of the regulations, which, however, did not detract from the quality of his wine. There are just 600 bottles of each vintage, but they are quite something.
San Petrolo Passito is a hedonistic and intellectual wine that immediately commands any attention thanks to its powerful aromas of candied fruit, brown sugar and caramel sweets. This luscious, full-bodied sweet wine shows wonderful concentration and balance in a style that manages to deliver tons of flavour and richness without being overly heavy. Coconut, spices, flowers and dried figs emerge on the palate and the balance of the wine is simply impeccable from start to finish. The exceptional 2019 harvest has prompted Luca Sanjust to take another step towards "quality without compromise". The yields per plant were reduced even further and the selection of grapes from the identified parcel was made even more rigorous. This led to a reduction in the number of bottles available to around 3,000. The same meticulousness was applied in the cellar, selecting the most suitable 7 hectolitre barrels for ageing "sur lie". The greatest attention was paid to their wood grain and "toasting" in order to achieve the harmony and taste that a pure Grand Cru Sangiovese should have.
Bòggina C Riserva uniquely highlights the fragrance, brightness and expressive depth of Sangiovese from the Bòggina vineyard. This version highlights the inimitable and unmistakable character of this wine, which originates in the midst of the Chianti mountains overlooking the Val d'Arno di Sopra, from where it derives the unmistakable magic of its aromas, its colours and its brightness. A wine that not only warms Luca's heart, but also shows the great path that the winery has been following for years.
With the 2019 vintage, it now becomes a Riserva for the first time. For this occasion, it also received a new label, derived from a painting by the artist Sabina Mirri, who specially made it. "The full-bodied 2016 Campo Lusso is absolutely gorgeous. This is a dark and generous expression of Cabernet Sauvignon that is grounded and centered, but so intense all the while. The bouquet is layered and rich with dark fruit, spice, leather, tar and chocolate. Campo Lusso is a beautiful expression of this French grape from Tuscany. The tannins are velvety and impeccably integrated. First produced in 2004, this wine sees fruit sourced from an isolated vineyard spot located just under the Galatrona tower (at 500 meters above sea level). Farmers referred to this site as the "campo lusso," or luxury site, because of the ideal soil composition of rocky limestone. The Torre di Galatrona, which gives its name to the top wine of the Fattoria Petrolo, is visible from afar. Between Florence and Arezzo flows the Arno. The Val d'Arno, a historically always contested, fertile area, for centuries characterized by olives, wine and forests, is rich in former castles and forts. The Tower of Galatrona probably dates back to an Etruscan stronghold. And it adorns the labels of the Fattoria Petrolo, to whose lands it now belongs.
The winery, which has won many awards, has been part of the DOC Valdarno di Sopra since 2011. At last, they remembered and gave this region its historic name again. In 1716, Cosimo II de Medici named Val d'Arno di Sopra as one of the four best zones for olive and wine growing in Tuscany. For decades, the region was known as the Chianti Colli Aretini, the hills of Arezzo. However, the provisions of this region were too casual for the Bazzocchi-Sanjust family, who acquired the estate in the late 1940s. Lucia Bazzocci and her son Luca Sanjust, who now runs the winery, decided at the end of the 1980s to trim production to the highest quality and therefore left the Consorzio. For years the wines were therefore labelled as Rosso Toscana IGT. Which did not prevent international critics from awarding up to 99 points. James Suckling even named Galatrona 2015 the second best wine in the world.
The Fattoria Petrolo is situated at an altitude of between 250 and 450 metres above sea level. Of the 272 hectares of land, 26 hectares are planted with vines. The oldest vineyards date back to 1947, and most of the vines were replanted in the 1990s following analyses carried out by Prof. Scienza of the University of Milan. With up to 5,500 vines per hectare, but with a yield of only 25 hl/ha. This results in about 70,000 bottles per year. The Galestro soils are typical of the Apennine region of Tuscany, but here they are interspersed with slate, limestone, clay and sandstone and are characterised by minerals.
In addition to the leading variety Sangiovese and small quantities of old autochthonous, almost extinct varieties, Merlot, from which the highly awarded Galatrona is pressed as a pure variety, as well as a little Cabernet Franc, Syrah and Petit Verdot are planted. The Cabernet Sauvignon stands in the highest position below the tower at about 500 m above sea level and is a bush culture, here called Albarello. Some Malvasia and Trebbiano complete the range. The white grapes are not only used to produce a very exquisite and rare Vin Santo, but also, with the help of Lucien le Moine from Burgundy, a white wine ("Boggina B") which is quite exceptional for Tuscany. In the last two decades Luca Sanjust has often broken new ground. Today you can find many a terracotta amphora in the most modernly equipped cellar, in addition to cement tanks for fermentation and wooden barrels of various sizes, from the classic large "Botte" to tonneaux and barriques. Depending on grape variety, location or cuvée.
Luca has gathered a team of renowned experts around him. Stefano Guidi and Simone Cuccoli are the Fattoria's oenologists, Carlo Nesterini is an agronomist who looks after the vineyards, and no less than the great Chianti connoisseur Carlo Ferrini has been recruited as an external consultant. For more than 20 years, some of the vineyards have been cultivated organically, and since 2016, all the grapes have been certified organic. The committed goal is to convert the entire DOC Valdarno di Sopra to organic cultivation and thus become a pioneer in Italy. A good idea. SUPERIORE.DE
