“Michei di Michei” Müller Thurgau Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020
The small Maso Michei vineyard, owned by Martin Foradori, supplies the strictly selected grapes for this great Müller Thurgau. The vineyards at an altitude of over 800m have an ideal southern exposure and, with their special microclimate, provide the grapes for a wine of great aromatic depth, which rightly belongs to the best representatives of its grape variety from the Dolomite region. It is only released on the market after a further 12 months of ageing in the bottle and is only produced in the best vintages.
Intense light yellow. Fresh fruits on the nose, including green apple and bitter orange, lime blossom and the notes of nutmeg typical of the grape variety. Fresh on the palate, equipped with a lively fruit-acid play, this wine presents itself with a finesse that convinces us completely. SUPERIORE.DE

Lagrein Alto Adige DOC 2021
For a so-called basic Lagrein, a more than respectable performance: minty freshness, accentuated by floral notes and a hint of white pepper. The 2019 Lagrein seems a little hesitant to show its full potential today, but the first sip already reveals a deep, silky texture. Corresponding to this is a crisp red and black fruit, the whole driven by juicy acidity and lots of pressure. Very impressive and with potential! SUPERIORE.DE

“Michei di Michei” Pinot Nero Vigneti delle Dolomiti IGT 2020
Maso Michei is located high up in a secluded mountain world in southern Trentino. There, the vines thrive at 790 to 850 metres above sea level on a sun-soaked southern slope in pristine nature. In this remarkable location for viticulture, the vines grow slowly and the grapes ripen late. With the acquisition of the 13 ha Maso Michei vineyards in the Valle dei Ronchi above Ala, Martin Foradori Hofstätter is returning to the roots of his ancestors in Trentino.
Dense, deep ruby red. Fresh and straightforward on the palate, with perfectly balanced acidity and rich aromatic nuances with distinct notes of wild berries, strawberries, red currants and delicate hints of undergrowth, nice length. SUPERIORE.DE
"Though best known for his range of Pinot Neros from Mazon, further up the valley, Martin Foradori also produces a delightful example from vines grown at 800m on his Michei estate in southern Trentino. Fermentation in wooden tini – traditional upright, conical vats – and further wood and bottle ageing give a beautifully balanced wine with luscious loganberry and raspberry and hints of chocolate and pecan. Elegant and stylish." Decanter

“Vigna San Michele” Barthenau Pinot Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2018
The Pinot Bianco from the single vineyard San Michele of the Barthenau Winery has a strong personality, which fully develops after an additional year of bottle ripening. In the rich bouquet green apple and banana, full-bodied and with lots of fruit the taste, in addition a medium, finely balanced acidity and a long mineral finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Barthenau Vigna S. Michele Pinot Bianco from J. Hofstatter is deep, rich and utterly classic. It lifts up from the glass with a dramatic display of dried peaches and apple, offset by zests of lemon, yellow flowers, hints of almond and hazelnut. There’s a sweetness here that strikes a chord, as suddenly a wave of brisk acid brings balance, leaving a coating of silky textures and ripe white orchard fruit. Hints of honey and inner florals linger over a mineral twang that lasts for up to a minute. It’s a large-scaled wine, yet maintains its posture perfectly." Vinous

“Vigna Oberkerschbaum” Sauvignon Bianco Alto Adige DOC 2020
In South Tyrol, the "Vigna" classification guarantees the origin of a site wine. This Sauvignon is a selection from the best grapes of the Oberkerschbaum estate in Buchholz/Salurn at an altitude of about 800 metres. Thanks to the special microclimate, the ideal orientation and the challenging altitude, the Oberkerschbaum estate is one of the most exciting cru sites for South Tyrolean Sauvignon.
Intense straw yellow colour with delicate greenish reflections. Aromas of ripe citrus fruits, grapefruit and bergamot mingle with delicate scents of flint and nettle. On the palate, this fruitiness continues - Oberkerschbaum is a Sauvignon of harmonious complexity that never seems too slender despite its racy acidity and convinces us completely with its aromatic length. Martin Foradori-Hofstätter is a forward and lateral thinker. He took over the fourth-generation family business at a young age and has consistently expanded and converted it. The winery consists of several former farms and five "Ansitzen", as the large historic estates are called in South Tyrol. The wines are also named after them: Kolbenhof, Rechtenthaler Schlossleiten, Barthenau with Yngram, Steinraffler, Oberkerschbaum and the recently acquired Maso Michei in southern Trentino, a remarkable high altitude site, the roots of the Foradoris' paternal ancestors. Today, Martin Foradori tells us with justifiable pride that the family vineyard is the only one in South Tyrol with vineyards to the west and east of the Adige river. His approximately 50 hectares of vineyards lie on a wide variety of soils and in different micro-climates from 250 m to 850 m above sea level. Some thrive in the morning sun, others still get light and warmth early in the evening. Some of them are located on dizzyingly steep slopes, vineyards where, looking up from the valley to the cliffs, one can hear: "Which crazy person is still growing wine up there?
The winery's headquarters are in the middle of Tramin, where Martin Foradori-Hofstätter, due to a lack of space, built the new wine cellar as a wine tower in 1997, right next to the church tower, thus creating an architectural contrast in the historic centre of the village. The historic 16th-century estate was once the imperial-royal post office and became the "Schwarzer Adler" inn around 1900, run by Martin Foradori's great-aunt. Her husband, Joseph Hofstätter, pressed the first wines in the cellar of the inn and thus founded the winery.
Contrast also at work. The vineyards are cultivated close to nature and with elaborate manual labour. As one of the first wineries in South Tyrol, they relied on "gentle pruning" and thus achieved healthy and long-lived vines. Some are now over 70 years old and form the basis for the single vineyard wines. Here, too, the Hofstätter winery was a pioneer in the region; it was the first to be allowed to name its wines after the site, in this case "Vigna", comparable to "Cru" in France.
In the cellar, however, nothing is left to chance. Here we have the most modern technology, stainless steel and wooden barrels, in order to be able to process each grape variety and location perfectly. In 2013, innovative concrete barrels were introduced, a first for South Tyrol in wine production. Due to their special aesthetics, they have become an attraction of the winery.
The focus is on the regional grape varieties, first and foremost of course Gewürztraminerafter all, Tramin is known as the home of this original variety and has been mentioned in chronicles here since at least 1145. In addition, Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc) and various other white wine varieties, as well as the typical autochthonous grape varieties Lagrein and Vernatsch. Alongside Traminer, however, Pinot Noir (Pinot Pinot Noir) is one of the estate's most successful wines. The Vigna Sant'Urbano from the extreme vineyards of the Hof von Barthenau is certainly the most highly decorated Pinot Noir in Italy and superior to many a French Pinot Noir, although of course different due to its origin. The Gewürztaminer from the Kolbenhof are the counterpart from the other bank of the Etsch, equally highly awarded. The absolute top wines honour their ancestors with their labels: Ludwig Barth von Barthenau, who once cultivated the Pinot Noir Roccolo in Mazon, the Gewürztraminer Pirchschrait at the Kolbenhof is a tribute to Konrad Oberhofer, who was the first to vinify the grapes of individual vineyards separately in the 1930s. And the Gewürztraminer Vigna Rechtenthaler Schlossleiten Spätlese, which commemorates Joseph Hofstätter, the founder of the winery. SUPERIORE.DE
