Eugenio Campolmi loved Syrah. Not as an assemblage component, not as a flavouring for other grape varieties – but in its pure form, without compromise. In 1994, when hardly anyone in Bolgheri was seriously considering 100% Syrah, he started Scrio. The name comes from the Tuscan – a dialect word normally used for people: scrio, whoever it is, is pure, sincere, undivided. Eugenio Campolmi has transferred this word to a wine. It fits. Scrio is made from a rigorous selection of the best Syrah grapes from the Puntone and Vignone vineyards – hand-picked, 800 grams per vine. The vineyard does not yield more than this, and it does not want more. Never more than 5,000 bottles. Fermentation and maceration for 20 days in stainless steel, then 13 months in new tonneaux and conical wooden containers, a small proportion in ceramics – ageing that gives the wine texture without masking it.

Scrio 2022 presents itself with dark intensity and great originality. Intense, deep ruby red colour. Black pepper, spices, plums, olives and a hint of Mediterranean scrub on the nose – dark, powerful. A style that does not call for Côte du Rhône, but for Bolgheri. Powerful on the palate with a silky texture, densely spun tannins, mineral depth and a very long, spicy finish. "The Scrio (with 4,000 bottles made) has a level of bright primary fruit that comes out roaring. The power and textural richness of the vintage is immediately clear, and you get dark fruit, sweet spice and a nicely hydrated mouthfeel and tannins. The estate has seven hectares of Syrah in the Vigna Vignone and an additional 9,000 square meters of vines in the Casavecchia vineyard that is 200 meters above sea level with schistic galestro soils and head-pruned plants. The first site delivers the wine's roundness and sweet fruit, whereas Casavecchia brings the acidic tension and linearity. This wine is a 50-50 blend of both parcels. No whole cluster is used because the skins were too fragile and the stems did not fully ripen. The wine is fermented in Tava cement vats, and cap management is more of an infusion with submerged cap. Great care is taken to avoid oxygen, which could result in undesired black olive-like aromas. This wine has taken on a life of its own, and the intensity of primary fruit is excellent." Wine Advocate
