The wine is lean in terms of mouthfeel, but that silky construction gives it extra power and momentum.     Things to know aboutSyrah 

    For some years now, this noble French grape variety has been experiencing a real boom in Italy. From the north to the south of Italy they can be found more and more frequently. It was recognised early on that this spicy grape variety was very suitable as a blending partner. Be it with Barbera, Sangiovese, Nero d'Avola, Aglianico or Carignano - a few percent Syrah usually do well.

    Fits typical Mediterranean dishes.

    In some regions, excellent pure Syrah is now also produced, which is just as distinct from the plump southern French Syrah as it is from the fruity Australians. Italian Syrah is usually very finely structured and spicy, often with the typical Mediterranean herbal aromas and a hint of black olives.

    Shiraz – Syra – or Siracusa?

    For a long time people were wondering where the grape variety probably came from. It is spread all over the world and is one of the most "Cepage nobles" - so to the best grape varieties. The Persian city of Shiraz was suspected to be because the grape variety is so spelt in many countries, such as Australia's most famous wine, Penfolds Grange, a pure Shiraz. It could come from the Cycladic island Syra, Syracus in Sicily also sounds somehow logical. It has even been assigned to the Celts, as an ancient grape variety Allobrogica, which Pliny already mentioned. There could be something to it, because according to the latest DNA investigations Syrah is traced back to a cross between two old grape varieties from Savoy - and this was once under the influence of the Celtic tribe of the Allobroger. At least a nice story. The fact is, however, that it also thrives in the drier and warmer regions of Italy and produces complex wines with a tannin and fruit emphasis.
