A Barolo from a great vintage: the 2021 wine year brought a long growing season with clear day-night amplitudes and precise harvest: fully ripe phenolics, bright acidity, impeccable health. The grapes come from family-owned plots in Serralunga d'Alba, La Morra, Grinzane Cavour, Monforte and Mosconi. Each vineyard is fermented separately in stainless steel; prolonged maceration with gentle extraction, followed by unhurried malolactic fermentation. For the ageing process, the winery primarily uses large Slavonian oak barrels (botti), discreetly supplemented by French oak.
Bright, radiant garnet colour with a ruby red core. An uncanny energy and depth on the nose: Marasca cherry, pomegranate and red plum, with dried roses, violets and blood orange; subtle hints of aniseed, cedar wood, white pepper and a cool, iron-mineral undertone. Vibrant and precise on the palate: silky, dense but feather-light tannins, carried by crystal-clear, dead-straight acidity. The fruit appears glassy, the mid-palate has fullness without heaviness, the wood remains in the background as a fine lustre. Long, salty-mineral final with citric freshness and elegant herbal spice. This is a Barolo with goosebumps factor: bright, focussed, with inner tension. 2021 shows great class here and offers excellent development over many years. SUPERIORE.DE
"Light, medium ruby red with a brightening rim. The nose opens with redcurrant jelly, followed by a fine spiciness of wood and leather. Clear and straightforward on the palate, opens with fine-meshed tannins, very clear and precise, juicy fruit, good pressure on the final." Falstaff
"A stately nose with aromas of cherries, raspberries, herbs and some blood oranges; pithy on the palate, the tannins robust yet dense, long plum finish with fine spice. Elegant, compact style." Vinum
"The 2021 Barolo Pio has a lot to offer. Medium in body and quite gracious, the 2021 offers up an exciting mix of dark red fruit intermingled with scents of tobacco, spice, dried herbs, menthol, leather, incense and licorice. This virile yet mid-weight Barolo is such a great example of what makes blended Barolos so compelling, namely the complexity that comes from blending sites from various appellations. I loved it." Vinous
"It's fresh and attractive with redcurrants, wild strawberries, brushwood and rosehip tea. It is quite full-bodied with a certain richness of fruit, but also with assertive tannins that give it the necessary support. The finish is long and earthy. This classic bottling, which brings together eight vineyards from five villages, shows a more immediate balance than the Ornato." Decanter
"The Piedmontese stage opens with an elegant pas de deux of blueberries and cherries pirouetting into a garden scene of freshly harvested herbs and violet leaves. The performance continues as delicate spices waft through the air. Fine but confident tannins conduct a symphony in which the fruit takes centre stage, framed by earth and salty mineral notes in perfect harmony. A masterful composition that will enchant the public for many years to come." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2021 Barolo comes from different sites, and as with the Barbaresco, you get an excellent portrait of the vintage with balanced acidity, firm tannins and bright primary fruit. There is energy and vitality in this beautiful Barolo with dried cherries, iris and subtle dustings of iron ore or rust." Wine Advocate
"This wine is very powerful and structured, with flavours of black truffle, graphite and hints of dried thyme and cedar. Medium to full-bodied and chewy, but polished. Hints of terracotta and dark fruit. The finish is lingering. Best after 2028." James Suckling
