The grapes come from the high-altitude MGA Il Bricco near Treiso. Each parcel is harvested separately, fermented in stainless steel with long maceration and then matured classically in large Slavonian and French oak barrels; a small proportion matures in barriques to refine the texture without masking the origin. The 2018 vintage was characterised by a long growing season with a sufficient water supply, a warm summer and a calm autumn. The late, selective harvest yielded pure grapes with a fine acidity line and polished tannins – a subtle, elegant style with early grace and good development prospects.
Light to medium garnet colour with a ruby red core. Red cherry, rosehip and wild strawberry on the nose, accompanied by dried roses, tea leaves, a hint of cedar and cool stone. Silky on the palate, then with a pithy centre: fine-grained, ripe tannins, lively, clearly defined acidity and a subtly salty mineral note that prolongs the finish. Long, elegant final with notes of liquorice and herbal blossom. A very classic Il Bricco with fine transparency and calm depth. SUPERIORE.DE
"Combines the elegance promised by its origin with sweet flavours and plenty of fruit, always underpinned by a certain sweetness with a hint of nougat, offering depth, salinity and fine acidity on a fairly long finish. Shows what the 2018 vintage is capable of." Weinwisser
"Sparkling, intense ruby garnet colour, light rim. Notes of rose petals, raspberries, some tobacco and truffles on the nose. Pithy tannin, full-bodied, lots of tobacco and leather, then slightly sandy tannin on the finish." Falstaff
"Brilliant medium ruby red colour. Like an enhanced version of their pure Barbaresco. Powerful nose that is perfumed at the same time. Cherry with hints of tobacco leaf, iron, orange peel and caraway. Increasingly mineral with aeration. Iron and orange and again a hint of cumin. Fine-grained, long tannins that carry the supple fruit. You can approach it now, but ideally it should spend more time in the bottle." Jancis Robinson
"A rich, well-defined style that evokes flavours of cherry, raspberry, iron, menthol and tobacco. Broad tannins herald the finish, but it remains balanced, intense and energetic, with a lingering aftertaste." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Barbaresco Il Bricco is a worthy successor to the outstanding 2017. Menthol, liquorice, gravel, incense and a range of broodingspice notes are the first to open up, but it's the overall depth of the wine that I find particularly enticing. The 2018 is racy and complex, yet refined enough to have a lot going for it. Best of all, it can be enjoyed with minimal cellaring time. It's a great Barbaresco that captures the essence of Treiso." Vinous
"The 2018 Barbaresco Il Bricco shows abundant depth and intensity with dark fruits, smoke, toasted spices and smoked tobacco. This is a production of 6,393 numbered bottles. This vintage shows a medium-bodied approach with rich fruit weight and polished tannins." Wine Advocate
"This is a very solid red wine for the vintage, with a medium to full body and extremely refined and concentrated tannins that run the length of the wine. Flavours of bitter lemons, strawberries and spices. Compact and long. To be tasted after 2025." James Suckling
The Barbaresco "Selection" by Pio Cesare, which comes from 3 micro-zones in the highest part of the vineyards of Cascina Il Bricco in Treiso. Great freshness on the nose, with notes of raspberry, blood orange, gardenia and cloves. Dense and exciting on the palate, savoury tannins, pleasantly long finish." Luca Gardini
