It was Domizio Cavazza, director of the Royal School of Viticulture in Alba, who gave Barbaresco its name and its claim to fame in 1894. A wine that was to stand up to the more powerful Barolo – finer, accessible earlier, but no less complex. More than a century later, the roles are clearly divided: Barbaresco stands for the elegant side of Nebbiolo, for finesse instead of power, for fragrance instead of darkness. Prunotto has found his answer to this appellation in a single vineyard: Bric Turot. Five hectares at around 200 metres, with an exposure from south-west to south-east, which gives the hill the shape of a natural amphitheatre. The soil – tortonian limestone and marl with veins of sand, rich in magnesium and manganese – is the same foundation on which Gajas Sorì Tildin stands just a few metres away. Not bad terrain then.
2022 was a year that demanded discipline from the vines. Little rain, heat above the seasonal cut – the plant regulated itself, reduced grape size and yield, concentrated its energy. The result: perfect health, smaller berries, higher density. Harvest at the end of September to the beginning of October. Ten days of maceration at max. 30°C, malolactic fermentation before winter – then at least twelve months in oak barrels of various sizes, a further year in the bottle.
Intense garnet red with the orange-coloured reflections that only Nebbiolo has. The nose is open and clear: red fruits, undergrowth, aromatic herbs, violets and a fine spiciness. Excellent density on the palate and an elegant, silky tannin structure. The entry is soft, almost inviting – the final is long, complex and savoury. A Barbaresco that does not exhibit its class, but simply possesses it. SUPERIORE.DE
"The classic from the Antinori estate: tones of red berries, rosehips and violets; juicy texture, the powdery tannins and acidity in harmony, finishes long on notes of fresh redcurrants and pepper." Vinum
"Bright, light ruby red with garnet tinges. Inviting, multi-layered bouquet of juicy wild berries and Mediterranean herbs, plus coffee and milk praline. Soft and supple on the palate, with great harmony between ripe fruit and supporting tannins and acidity, long." Falstaff
"The 2022 Barbaresco Bric Turot opens with hints of baking spice, new leather, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and menthol. Aromatic and pliant, with lovely balance, the 2022 is a delight to taste. In this vintage, the Bric Turot is quite open and accessible, even in the early going. I would not wait too long, given the wine's mid-weight structure." Vinous
"A fruity version, boasting strawberry, cherry and rose flavors, plus a hint of tar. Elegant and juicy, this lingers nicely on the lightly chalky finish. Supple and inviting." Wine Spectator
"Wild berries and white pepper leap from the glass like they're playing tag with fresh pine needles and mint leaves. The flavors hit that sweet spot between power and grace, where velvety tannins wrap around juicy red fruits and bright herbs, leading to a finish that keeps you coming back for more." Wine Enthusiast
"Scents of incense, baked earth and hazelnut offset the more candied character of dark raspberry fruit. It has some heft and concentration yet remains harmonious and fluid. Chalky tannins build up, but this is still quite approachable. Bric Turot is a small hill within the MGA of Montaribaldi. As Prunotto has been producing this since 1996 – long before Barbaresco’s MGAs were codified – it continues to be labelled exclusively with its original name." Decanter
