Barolo “Tortoniano” DOCG 2019
Tortoniano Barolo is a blend of Nebbiolo, 50% of which comes from the Cerequio vineyard, the other half from other plots, including some plantings in the Novello commune. It combines the complexity and nuances of the Nebbiolo grape with a fruit-driven and engaging personality. The aromatic bouquet shows hints of sweetness and richness with a potpourri of blackberries, summer cherries and spices. On the palate it is powerful and immediate, the tannins are clear and tangible. Will continue to develop towards perfection, elegance and finesse over the next few years. SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo Bussia DOCG 2019
Bussia 2019 is a powerful, intense wine that shows great depth and intensity, with a powerful tannin that gives the wine its masculine, virile personality. Notes of black cherry, wood smoke, liquorice, leather, menthol, pine, scorched earth and pebbles unfold in the glass. Although it is already very expressive, it still needs some time in the bottle so that the tannins can calm down a little. Nevertheless, it is already impressive and represents the 2019 Piedmontese wine year in a great way. SUPERIORE.DE

Ceretto's 2019 Barolo combines the power of the vintage with the subtle signature of the house. Barolo DOCG 2019
The grapes for the estate's classic Barolo come from the vineyards/communes of Ornato, La Serra, Briccolina in Serralunga d'Alba, Gustava and Garretti in Grinzane Cavour, Roncaglie in La Morra, Ravera in Novello and, from the 2015 vintage, also from Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba. It is more of a traditional, classic Barolo with an exciting bouquet of deep, dark fruit and a pretty potpourri of rose petals, spices, smoke and tar. It is full-bodied and firm on the palate, opening up with plenty of dense tannins, very powerful, with pressure and a full bite on the finish, designed for a long life. SUPERIORE.DE

Barolo di Serralunga d’Alba DOCG 2019
Enrico Serafino's classic opens in a medium-dark colour with fragrant aromas of dark fruits, plums, spices, iron ore and freshly ploughed earth. Medium-bodied on the palate, rather slender, which is not a flaw, but emphasises the elegance and class of the Nebbiolo grape very nicely. The tannins are present but pleasantly tame, with peppery nuances on the finish, a salty mineral aftertaste and delicate nougat on the final. SUPERIORE.DE

"For the Barolo DOCG Parussi, we left the confines of Serralunga and opted for a vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Barolo Cerretta DOCG 2019
Barolo Cerretta is a dense, concentrated and energetic expression of Nebbiolo. Red and purple fruit flavours of cassis, dried cranberries and cherries set beautiful accents, but there is also plenty of room for the equally beautiful aromas of liquorice, campfire ash and candied orange peel that play such a deft supporting role. Barolo Ginestra “Ciabot Mentin” DOCG 2019
Barolo Ginestra Ciabot Mentin DOCG 2019 comes from one of Monforte's most prestigious parcels with a south-south-easterly exposure at an altitude of around 400 metres. The old Nebbiolo vines are deeply rooted in calcareous marl with veins of clay and sand, which gives the wine intensity and finesse. The 2019 vintage is considered one of the most classic of the last decade: long, balanced vegetation, mild summer heat and cool September nights produced grapes of rare aromatic precision. After being harvested by hand, the grapes were carefully vinified and matured in French oak for around 30 months.

The loose, sandy soils of Cannubi always ensure a special concentration of flavour, and this is particularly evident in this classic vintage. Barolo Ravera “Bricco Pernice” DOCG 2019
2019 is considered one of the vintage highlights of the last decade in Barolo: cool nights, sunny days and a long vegetation period led to perfectly balanced ripeness. In Bricco Pernice, this meant maximum aromatic clarity and structural depth. The high, south-westerly exposure in the Ravera cru site ensures an interplay of warmth and freshness, while the calcareous marl soils promote a taut, vertical style.

Barolo Cerequio DOCG 2019
Cerequio is considered one of the grand cru sites of Barolo and has been an integral part of the Michele Chiarlo icons for decades. The steep slopes between La Morra and Barolo face south-east and south-west, with calcareous marl and fine veins of sand that give the Nebbiolo here an unmistakable combination of depth, finesse and flavour. The vines, some of which are over 30 years old, produce wines of remarkable complexity in mature vintages. The 2019 vintage was characterised by a balanced vegetation cycle: a cool spring, followed by warm, sunny summer months and moderate temperatures in September, which allowed for slow, complete ripening. After gentle fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, the wine matured for two years in large French oak barrels before being further refined in the bottle.

The grapes come from the historic single vineyard Ornato in Serralunga d'Alba: steep, windy slopes on calcareous marl with ferruginous inclusions, at an altitude of around 350-400 metres, predominantly south/south-west facing. Each parcel is harvested separately and fermented in stainless steel; long maceration with gentle extraction. Maturation takes place classically in large Slavonian barrels, with a finely dosed proportion of French oak for texture and lustre. The typically long autumn of 2019 brought fully ripe, aromatically dense grapes with a cool acidity.

Barolo del Comune di La Morra DOCG 2019
The grapes for Roberto's "entry-level Barolo" come from four of his best vineyards, which are harvested a few weeks earlier than those reserved for his Grand Crus. It is also the most balanced of his Barolo wines, even if the fruit and acidity are anything but restrained, but the proportions are just right here. The structure is great, its length and elegance inspiring - the refined layered components such as raspberry, cherry and its subtle salty vein make it without doubt one of the most serious wines of the entire appellation - a real Voerzio for comparatively little money. Serralunga d'Alba. Anyone who hears this name knows that this is where the masculine, powerful side of Barolo is born. Not the Burgundian elegance of La Morra, not the finesse of Barolo – but structure, tannin and longevity. The Cerretta vineyard is located on the south side of Serralunga, surrounded by legendary crus such as Lazzarito and Vigna Rionda. Sandstone, limestone, chalk – a terroir that gives Nebbiolo strength and depth. Elio Altare has been cultivating 20-year-old vines with a southern, south-eastern and south-western exposure here for decades. The legendary single vineyard Mosconi in Monforte d'Alba: steep, windy slopes on calcareous and ferruginous marl, predominantly south/south-west facing. Hand-picked from parcels, fermentation in stainless steel with prolonged maceration and gentle extraction. Maturation predominantly in large Slavonian barrels, finely dosed and flanked by French oak – always for texture, not opulence. Barolo DOCG 2019 · MAGNUM in OWC

Barolo Brunate DOCG 2019 (BIO)
The Barolo Brunate 2019 comes from one of the most legendary cru vineyards in La Morra, on the border with Barolo. The vineyards, located at an altitude of around 300 metres and facing south-south-east, combine calcareous marl soils with good water storage capacity – ideal conditions for Nebbiolo with great depth and aromatic complexity. The 2019 vintage brought a long growing season with cool nights and sunny days, which ensured precise fruit and a distinctive structure. The 24-month maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels gives the wine depth and longevity.

Barolo 2019: classic size, structure and a vintage for the cellar
In direct comparison with the more accessible Barbaresco 2020, Barolo 2019 shows the classic austerity, depth and tannin structure that makes great Nebbiolo vintages so fascinating. It is precisely this contrasting effect that sharpens the profile of the vintage: less early flavour, more architecture and long-term perspective.
Barolo 2019 is already considered a classic vintage with great Storage potential. The wines combine high acidity, grippy tannins and aromatic depth with a long, even growing season. On this page you will find the most important critics' opinions, the stylistic classification of the vintage as well as information on origin, drinking window and storage perspective.
Barolo 2019 at a glance
The 2019 Barolo is a vintage for those with patience. The best wines demonstrate:
- distinctive, often still grippy tannins
- High freshness and clear acidity structure
- Classic proportions instead of early opulence
- great potential for long bottle ageing
- strong expression of origin in the best sites and communities
Anyone looking for Barolo with depth, attitude and a long-term perspective will find a vintage of very serious calibre in 2019.
The character of the 2019 vintage
With the 2019 vintage, Barolo is focussing on a wine year that is already being discussed with great seriousness. There is much to suggest that it will be a classic, long-lasting and broodingvintage. At the same time, it requires patience, as these wines do not want to please immediately.
2019 is not a pleasing vintage, but one with attitude and perspective. The wines have tannin, freshness and backbone. This is precisely where their status lies. Those who open them young often experience contour and structure first. Those who give them years in the cellar will find depth, complexity and great nobility.
Barolo 2019 compared to Barbaresco 2020
James Suckling has aptly described the stylistic contrast between the two vintages:
"The most recent Piedmontese vintages of Barolo and Barbaresco, 2019 and 2020 respectively, could not be more different. The former is very tannic and at times austere, whilst the latter is fresh and well-balanced, with an enticing drinkability and subtle structure. I like to call them 'Beauty and the Beast'."
For Barolo 2019, this "beast" is not meant in a negative way. Rather, it describes a vintage that prioritises structure over charm and tension over early accessibility. While Barbaresco 2020 scores with harmony and early appeal, Barolo 2019 shows the more serious, cellar-ripe side of Nebbiolo.
JAMES SUCKLING | A classic vintage
James Suckling describes his expectations for 2019 in an open and differentiated manner:
"I have to admit that I had high expectations for the 2019 vintage when I tasted around 400 Barolos and Barbarescos in mid-June. Especially after all the hype from some producers and wine merchants, who categorised the vintage as great and classic. We tasted a total of 626 Barolos and Barbarescos for this report. The top wines I tasted from this vintage, both from bottle and barrel, were beautiful. It seems that the producers who picked their Nebbiolos later, around the third week of October, produced the best wines with polished tannins and normal colours. Most of them still have four to five years to mature in the bottle, but they are classic Barolos." James Suckling
This categorisation already contains much of what makes 2019 special. It is a vintage that rewards selection and sensitivity. Later harvestin the second and third week of October seem to have produced particularly convincing results in many places. The best wines combine tannic ripeness, colour intensity and aromatic depth with a classic proportion that you look for in Barolo.
GAJA | Potential for the patient
Giovanni Gaja also describes the vintage very clearly:
"The 2019 Barolo has firm tannins," says Angelo Gaja’s son Giovanni. "They aren’t polished. The vintage has a certain austerity. The acidity is high and accentuates the tannins. The potential is there, but it will take time to unfold." Giovanni Gaja
The description of the tannins is particularly important for 2019. They are grippy, not polished, not glossed over. This gives the vintage the seriousness that often characterises great classic Baroli. These are wines that require air, time and bottle ageing.
WINE ADVOCATE | The Barolo boom
Monica Larner from the Wine Advocate places the 2019 vintage in a wider context and shows how closely vintage quality, origin and the current dynamics of the region are linked:
"The selection of outstanding wines is enormous. The great enthusiasm for the 2019 vintage has a legitimate background. It is fair to say that the Piedmontese wine regions have entered a chapter of unprecedented glory. And the value of the wine has been transferred to the value of the land. The vineyards of Barolo are the most expensive land you can buy in Italy, with prices ranging from 250,000 euros to two million euros per hectare, according to the state research agency CREA. I was also told that a record price of six million euros was paid for a single hectare of vineyards. There are many good reasons for this veritable Barolo boom. One is the price, as Barolo is considered a (still) affordable collector's wine alongside the great wines from Bordeaux and Burgundy. However, quality is the most important factor, and this applies to both the wines and the region. The better the wines become, the more the region reflects a sense of balance and sustainability, which in turn attracts visitors from the upmarket segment who want to explore the range of food and wine on offer.
There is a spirit of optimism that drives the creative spirit of the local wine community. Broadly speaking, there are four overarching themes that have increasingly come to the fore in recent years. Some of the best qualities can be found in the growing area of "community bottlings". These are, for example, the wines labelled Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba, Barolo del Comune di Verduno and Barolo del Comune di La Morra. They obtain their fruit from the entire village, whether from a Menzione Geografica Aggiuntiva or from several vineyards.
In the face of climate change, there has been a move away from the established cru sites of Barolo to alternative MGA sites. However, most experts agree that two sites in particular, Monvigliero in Verduno and Ravera, which borders the villages of Barolo and Novello, are the new favourites. However, this does not mean that the most famous Barolo sites, such as Cannubi and Brunate, are less important. These historic sites continue to offer top wines, especially in a balanced vintage like 2019, and La Morra is perhaps the most consistent site over time, although this village has been subject to more severe weather over the past decade. These wines, with their silky tannins and approachable style, can be relied on as usual.
The classic 2019 vintage is characterised by a long growing season, which favours the colour intensity and aromatic complexity of the Nebbiolo grape. These wines are predestined for long ageing in the cellar. The last part of the season was slow and even, with large daily fluctuations. These peaks between warm days and cool nights create conditions that are extremely favourable for Nebbiolo. This grape variety loves a long growing season. The temperature fluctuations are always the secret of a good Barolo vintage. The end of the growing season is the time when the colour intensity is established, the aromatic depth is defined and the tannin structure is solidified.
As the Nebbiolo grapes were harvested on time in the second and third week of October, the winegrowers were able to achieve high acidity and good sugar levels. The colour and intensity of the aromas are wonderful. The resulting wines have additional tannin structure and freshness. We can be confident that these bottles will age beautifully in the cellar for a long time. This is a vintage to buy and hold. My cellar is well stocked, what about yours?" Wine Advocate
This passage makes it clear why 2019 in Barolo is more than just a successful vintage. It comes at a time when the region is working at an exceptionally high level in terms of style, economy and culture.
Municipalities, MGA and important references of origin
Barolo is now assessed with greater nuance than ever before. For a vintage such as 2019, in particular, terroir is crucial. Of particular relevance are:
- Serralunga d'Alba for structure, depth and tension
- Verduno for finesse and aromatic precision
- La Morra for silky tannins and a more accessible style
- Cannubi as a historical reference site
- Brunate as a classic top site
- Monvigliero in Verduno as a particularly sought-after MGA
- Ravera on the border to Barolo and Novello as a new reference site
2019 offers these origin profiles a particularly strong stage, because freshness, tannin and aromatic depth are clearly emphasised.
Climate, vegetation and harvest
Climatically, 2019 was a classic Nebbiolo year. The long growing season favoured colour intensity, aromatic complexity and tannin maturity. The clear differences between warm days and cool nights towards the end of the season were decisive.
It is precisely this slow, even maturation that is one of the prerequisites for great Barolo vintages. It allows the Nebbiolo to develop depth without sacrificing freshness. The fact that the grapes were harvested on time in the second and third week of October gave the wines an additional balance between sugar, acidity and phenolic ripeness.
Storage potential and drinking window
Barolo 2019 is above all a vintage for the cellar. It rewards buyers who make decisions with foresight and understand that patience is part of the pleasure.
The best wines:
- should often rest for a few more years
- gain significantly through bottle ageing
- have the potential for long development
- often only show their true greatness after several years
Anyone looking for classic Barolo with long-distance potential will find a vintage to buy and hold in 2019.
Conclusion: A classic vintage with a future
Barolo 2019 is a vintage with seriousness, structure and a clear perspective. It requires patience, but offers precisely the depth and classic nobility that characterise great Nebbiolo vintages. While other vintages appear accessible earlier, 2019 impresses with its poise, tannin architecture and the prospect of a long, impressive development.
As always, we have compiled the wines of the new vintage for you and hope you enjoy discovering them.
