A Riserva that only comes into being when the year allows it – and which makes a promise with its name: Essenze stands for the essence of the grape variety, the terroir and the time. The grapes come exclusively from the best cru sites in the municipalities of Barolo, Monforte, Serralunga, La Morra and Castiglione Falletto. Each parcel is vinified separately, carefully monitored, matured – and finally composed like a mosaic. The result: a Riserva Barolo that does not need to be loud to radiate authority. It is only bottled in exceptional years such as 2015 – after more than 42 months of ageing in large barrels and barriques.

A deep, dark ruby colour with a garnet-red core in the glass. The aroma is complex and controlled: dark forest fruits, ripe cherries, dried flowers, leather, tar and fine tobacco, flanked by balsamic freshness and a hint of liquorice. Nuances of violets, truffles and oriental spices appear with air – complex, but never overloaded. On the palate, Essenze Riserva is impressively balanced: firm, fine-grained tannins, a supporting acidity, plenty of juice and substance. The ageing in large oak gives the wine depth and calmness without ever weighing it down. The finish is long, spicy, almost meditative – and echoes in aromatic waves.
