When Eugenio Palumbo, Vietti's cellar master, described the summer of 2022, he came up with a phrase that has been echoing through the Langhe ever since: "Barolo grapes are usually harvested in wellies, not Crocs." A hot, dry year – harvested 15 days earlier than usual, and the decisions made in the vineyard made all the difference. As in every year, the Barolo is made from grapes sourced from around twenty different plots – the portions remaining after selection for the single-vineyard wines. In 2022, there was a rare twist: the Brunate, Cerequio and Villero vineyards were not released as separate MGA wines this time. It was therefore not the second selection, but their entire harvest that went into this wine. Palumbo himself calls the result "a sort of super single-vineyard" – and he's right.

A bright ruby red, slightly lighter than the 2021. On the nose, cherry, liquorice, graphite, violets and a hint of blood orange – precise, fresh, with an approachability that the vintage did not promise on paper. Well-balanced on the palate, with well-integrated tannins, lively acidity and a long, mineral final. 2022 as a surprise package – and this wine as its truest expression. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2022 Barolo is magnificent. Supple, medium-bodied and complex, the 2022 vintage is impeccable. It benefits from the inclusion of grapes from Brunate, Cerequio and Villero, none of which were bottled as single-vineyard wines. "Vietti's classic Barolo is every bit as good as its MGA single-vineyard bottlings. In fact, this vintage's blend features the finest grapes from Brunate, Cerequio and Villero, as these were not bottled separately in 2022. It has a lively bouquet of rose potpourri, bergamot, sweet earth and raspberries. On the palate, it is vivid and taut, with a assertive structure. The forward tannins cut through the supple fruit, and the acidity is lively. The finish is slightly dry, but overall it remains refined. Hints of mint and tobacco linger.
