In 1958, Bertani produced his first Amarone. The category was virtually non-existent, and "Amarone" is a new term for an age-old practice, yet most producers were still unsure whether this dry Appassimento wine had a future. Bertani, however, had no doubts at the time. Since then, the estate has been one of the leading voices behind a wine that is now considered one of the world's longest-lived reds. The key is patience. Corvina and Rondinella from the Tenuta Novare in Arbizzano di Negrar – vineyards dedicated exclusively to Amarone grapes – hand-harvested from the second week of September.

Then comes the decision that defines the character of this Amarone: 120 days on traditional bamboo racks, in a single thin layer – no accelerated drying, but rather a slow, natural concentration. This is followed by cold maceration at 4 to 5°C for around 20 days, followed by a slow fermentation in concrete tanks at a maximum of 18°C, lasting approximately 30 days. Then at least six years in large oak casks (not barriques).

2016 was a complex year in Valpolicella. Spring began with fluctuating temperatures and abundant rainfall during the early growing season. An early start to the harvest ensured good acidity; the dry autumn allowed for a healthy harvest and excellent appassimento. What began in 2016 with fermentation and ageing in wood is now leaving the winery in 2026. Deep violet-red. The bouquet is broad and intense: ripe dark fruits, blackberry, black cherry and redcurrant, followed by sweet spices, dried plum, hay, tea leaves, liquorice and cocoa. On the palate, it is round and of remarkable structure, with complex tannins that fill the palate and leave it feeling dry – a wine that invites you to take the next sip.
