Elvio Cogno produced his first vintage in 1964 from the Brunate vineyard near Marcarini, initially on a voluntary basis and later as a partner in the estate; the wine is still regarded as legendary in Barolo to this day. In 1990, he fulfilled his own dream and bought an estate in Novello, in the heart of Ravera. The manor house, which gives the wine its name, also serves as the estate's headquarters. Cogno died in 2016; his daughter Nadia and son-in-law Valter Fissore have taken over the business, and with 9.5 hectares, the estate is one of the most significant producers in the area. Three hectares of Nebbiolo grow here on calcareous clay, at an altitude of 380 metres and on a south-facing slope; the vines are 23 years old on average. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks using wild yeasts; the wine is then left on the skins for 30 days with the cap submerged, matures for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and spends a further six months in the bottle.
Dark berries, floral notes, white pepper and sweet spice, accompanied by a hint of smoke and ripe plum. On the palate, it is hearty and firm, with velvety tannins; the structure is finely defined and carried by a fresh vigour. A Barolo that is already a pleasure to drink today and will reward patience, whilst bearing the hallmark of its founder: precision over posturing. SUPERIORE.DE
"Impressive aromas of sweet cherries, leather, sandalwood and a hint of cinnamon; stimulating on the palate, with lively acidity and fresh, perfectly integrated tannins, leading to a long, floral and fruity finish." Vinum
"Still very closed, but with a little patience, a slow, steady succession of notes of cinnamon, sun-kissed sand, strawberry blossom and raspberries gradually unfolds. Rhubarb and porcini mushrooms join the light and supple palate, accompanied by long, silky tannins. A ripe, gentle acidity rounds off the finish. What a smouldering beauty." Decanter
"A wild and wonderfully spicy energy unfolds here: wild plum and freshly cut herbs are underpinned by a beautiful hint of balsam, which feels elemental and full of life. Sour cherry and a hint of clove give way to a dark, earthy forest floor, which underpins a long and deeply satisfying, spicy finish. Exceptional complexity; ready to drink now through to 2050." Wine Enthusiast
"A graceful wine with aromas of mint, dried cherries, strawberries, cinnamon and red currants. Well-packed tannins that are ripe and velvety, with a full body, crisp acidity and a tight but savory and fragrant finish. Drinkable now, but best from 2027." James Suckling
