In 1974, the Frescobaldi family at Nipozzano produced a wine for the first time from a single, clearly defined plot: Montesodi, named after the stony, hard soil that gives this site its character – a single-varietal Sangiovese, bottled separately vintage by vintage. It was the estate's first cru. The vines are situated at 400 metres, in south-west-facing schist soils, at an altitude that lends the Sangiovese here structure and an almost alpine coolness during the nights. Harvested by hand into 15-kilo crates and sorted on the selection table, the wine undergoes fermentation and maceration before malolactic fermentation takes place. It is aged for 18 months in 30-hectolitre barrels made of Austrian and French oak, followed by a further period of ageing in the bottle.
An intense, luminous ruby red in the glass. The bouquet opens with notes of rose and violet, followed by blackcurrant and raspberry, accompanied by an iron-rich, balsamic nuance with a hint of liquorice. Fresh on the palate, with magnificently silky tannins and an exceptionally long, lingering finish. A wine that proves that the harshest soils often produce the most elegant wines. SUPERIORE.DE
"This red wine is a firm, straightforward cuvée, captivating with aromas of cherry, strawberry, earth and iron. It gains in structure on the finish, with lingering notes of fruit and minerality." Wine Spectator
"The single-vineyard wine Montesodi captivates with its style and complexity. Notes of Bing cherries, fennel and mushroom stock unfold from the glass. A full-bodied texture and lively acidity provide balance, whilst you can taste ripe plums, balsamic vinegar and dried violets, which harmonise beautifully. The tannins are rich but become wonderfully supple if you give the wine a little time to open up." Wine Enthusiast
"Complex and layered, with aromas of sour cherries, pomegranates, dried lavender and an earthy edge. The medium-bodied palate is textured and bright, with fine-grained tannins, cool fruit and a long, fresh and fleshy finish. Drink or hold." James Suckling
