“Tenuta Frescobaldi Castiglioni” Rosso Toscana IGT 2023
Since 1300, Tenuta Castiglioni has epitomised the Frescobaldi family's winemaking tradition, and as early as the 16th century, its wines were held in the highest regard: at the papal court in Rome as well as at the English court of Henry VIII. This Rosso carries that reputation into the present day as a modern blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese. The grapes come from the same hills near Montespertoli where the family has been growing wine for centuries. Destemmed and fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with gentle, constant pumping over, the wine matures for twelve months in barriques, followed by a further two months in the bottle.

It is not just any wine that is set aside for the Frescobaldi family's newborns: Nipozzano Vecchie Viti is part of a small, family-exclusive selection traditionally set aside for the youngest members of the family, made from the estate's oldest vines, whose roots dig deep into the soil of Nipozzano. These old vineyards, planted with Sangiovese and traditional companion varieties, are situated high above the Arno Valley in Chianti Rufina, where the altitude and the contrast between day and night lend the grapes exceptional concentration and freshness. Fermented naturally in concrete tanks, the wine is then aged for 24 months in wooden barrels before being bottled, allowing its flavours to come together.

The "Riserva" is the ageing category prescribed by the Chianti Classico production regulations, requiring a minimum of 24 months' total ageing, of which at least three months must be spent in the bottle. At Tenuta Perano near Gaiole, the historic heart of the appellation, the estate has also opted for 24 months in wooden barrels – a choice made by the estate rather than a requirement of the regulations – which gives the Sangiovese and Merlot their elegant, refined character. The vines grow at an altitude of 500 metres, in a natural south-west-facing amphitheatre whose microclimate bestows upon the grapes exceptional ripeness and freshness in equal measure. Selected by hand, the wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with frequent pumping over of the cap to ensure complete phenolic extraction, before undergoing 24 months' ageing in wooden barrels followed by a further period in the bottle.

As early as 1855, a grape variety unrivalled in Tuscany was planted at Castello Pomino, high up in the Florentine hills: Pinot Noir, introduced by Leonia, Lamberto Frescobaldi's great-great-grandmother, who, with her courage in embracing French grape varieties, laid the foundation for one of the estate's most distinctive wines. To this day, this single-varietal Pinot Noir stands as a testament to her pioneering spirit. The vines grow in cool, water-retaining soils at an altitude that ensures cool nights during the Tuscan summer and preserves the Burgundy grape's freshness right up to harvest.Fermented in wooden vats with careful punching down during the maceration period, the wine undergoes malolactic fermentation before maturing for twelve months in French barriques.

Leonia is named after a woman who was a century ahead of her time in Tuscany: Leonia, Lamberto Frescobaldi's great-great-grandmother, planted French grape varieties in Pomino in the 19th century and pressed them in Italy's first gravity-fed cellar – a pioneering feat that was honoured with a gold medal in Paris in 1878. Today, her name stands for the estate's first Metodo Classico, made from Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. The grapes come from the high-altitude vineyards of Pomino, reaching up to around 700 metres above sea level. Harvested by hand, gently pressed and cold-settled for twelve hours, the must ferments in stainless steel tanks, with part of it in wood, before the classic bottle fermentation – involving a long period of ageing on the lees, riddling and disgorging – completes the wine.

On the cool slopes, 700 metres above sea level amongst giant sequoias and chestnut trees, this led to the creation in 1973 of the Benefizio, the very first Italian white wine ever to be fermented and matured in barriques.

In 1974, the Frescobaldi family at Nipozzano produced a wine for the first time from a single, clearly defined plot: Montesodi, named after the stony, hard soil that gives this site its character – a single-varietal Sangiovese, bottled separately vintage by vintage. It was the estate's first cru. The vines are situated at 400 metres, in south-west-facing schist soils, at an altitude that lends the Sangiovese here structure and an almost alpine coolness during the nights. Harvested by hand into 15-kilo crates and sorted on the selection table, the wine undergoes fermentation and maceration before malolactic fermentation takes place. In 1855, a far-sighted Frescobaldi ancestor planted on the hill of Nipozzano varieties that were virtually unknown in Tuscany at the time: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. This experiment matured for almost 130 years until, in 1983, the Mormoreto emerged as a distinct cru, which the family has since bottled only in vintages that do it justice. To date, they have skipped six vintages. The backbone is formed by Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, rounded off by a hint of Petit Verdot, and since 2013 a small proportion of Sangiovese has brought additional elegance to the cuvée.

On the CastelGiocondo label, a condottiero is depicted on horseback: Guidoriccio da Fogliano, the figure from Simone Martini's famous fresco in Siena's Palazzo Pubblico, who once led the siege of Montemassi Castle. For the Frescobaldi family, this image marks the beginning of their centuries-long adventure with wine. The estate itself dates back to a fortress built in 1100, whose origins lie far before the start of modern viticulture.

“Mormoreto” Rosso Toscana IGT 2022 · 6 bottles in OWC

“Lamaione” Rosso Toscana IGT 2022 · 6 bottles in OWC
In 1991, the Frescobaldi family at CastelGiocondo embarked on an experiment that caused a stir in the Sangiovese-dominated world of Montalcino: a single-varietal Merlot, made from the first Merlot vines that had been planted on the estate back in the 1970s. The Lamaione became the solitary, powerful and self-assured figure that it remains to this day in the Montalcino landscape – a wine that defies all the appellation's conventions.

“Giramonte” Rosso Toscana IGT 2023 · 6 bottles in OWC
Tenuta Castiglioni has belonged to the Frescobaldi family since the 11th century, making it one of the family's oldest estates in Tuscany. Drawing on this long history, the Giramonte is a modern, internationally inspired cuvée that demonstrates just how far the estate has come since its beginnings. At an altitude of 200 metres, in south-west-facing clay and loam soils, a blend of Merlot and Sangiovese is cultivated here. Known as Giramonte, it embodies the modern side of an estate whose roots are far older than its grape varieties.

Anyone who reduces Frescobaldi to tradition is probably missing the most interesting part. More than 700 years of winemaking represent an extraordinary history – but what really matters is what the family has made of it. Frescobaldi is not defined by one large operation with a uniform signature, but by a world of different estates, landscapes and grape varieties.
The roots lie in Florence and reach deep into the Middle Ages. Viticulture at Tenuta Castiglioni, the historical starting point of Frescobaldi's wine story, is documented as early as around 1300. The family business is now managed by the 30th generation. In between lie centuries in which not only the family itself, but also the wine landscape of Tuscany has repeatedly changed.
What is remarkable is how early Frescobaldi combined openness with a strong sense of origin. New grape varieties were already being explored at Nipozzano in the mid-19th century, while Chardonnay and Pinot Nero developed an unusually long Tuscan tradition at Pomino. At the same time, Sangiovese remained a central constant in Chianti, Chianti Classico and Montalcino. These wines are not united by a single stylistic formula, but by the idea of allowing each place as much individuality as possible.
Five estates, five perspectives on Tuscany
This approach is precisely what Frescobaldi itself describes as the core of its philosophy: Tuscany's different terroirs should not be standardised, but made visible through the individual estates and wines. At SUPERIORE.DE, this world is focused on five estates that could hardly be more different from one another.
From the cooler Chianti Rufina at the foot of the Apennines to the high-altitude vineyards of Pomino and Gaiole and the celebrated slopes of Montalcino, each estate leads to a different corner of Tuscany. Their common signature therefore lies less in a particular flavour profile than in the willingness to take origin seriously.
Castello Nipozzano – Chianti Rufina with the Apennines at its back
Northeast of Florence, Castello Nipozzano lies at the foot of the Apennines. Sangiovese shapes the vineyards, while fresh winds and pronounced differences between day and night temperatures encourage the freshness and elegance for which Chianti Rufina is appreciated.
Nipozzano Riserva and Vecchie Viti show the classical side of the estate, Montesodi sharpens the focus on Sangiovese and origin, while Mormoreto opens up a second perspective. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot have also long been part of the varietal spectrum here. Nipozzano thus exemplifies one of Frescobaldi's great ideas: tradition and openness do not have to be opposites.
Castello Pomino – great wines from great heights
Castello Pomino tells a completely different story. Its vineyards climb to around 700 metres on the wooded foothills of the Apennines. Pronounced day-night temperature differences and intense light create conditions in which Chardonnay and Pinot Nero play an unusually distinctive role for Tuscany.
Pomino was already among the Tuscan wine-growing areas specifically recognised by Cosimo III de' Medici in 1716. In the mid-19th century, Leonia degli Albizi introduced new ideas: Chardonnay, Pinot Nero and a gravity-flow cellar made Pomino an early centre of oenological curiosity. This history extends from Pomino Bianco and Benefizio to the Leonia range of Metodo Classico wines.
Tenuta CastelGiocondo – the spirit of Montalcino
With Tenuta CastelGiocondo, the journey leads to Montalcino. The estate is one of the historic properties involved in the early development of Brunello di Montalcino in the 19th century. Southwest-facing vineyards, elevations of around 300 to 400 metres and a remarkable variety of soils create ideal conditions for Sangiovese.
Campo ai Sassi, CastelGiocondo and Ripe al Convento reveal different levels of depth within this origin. Lamaione deliberately broadens the picture beyond Brunello. CastelGiocondo's strength lies precisely in this diversity: different parcels and soils are not smoothed into one style, but translated into distinct expressions of a major Montalcino estate.
Tenuta Castiglioni – where Frescobaldi's wine journey began
In the Val di Pesa lies Tenuta Castiglioni, the family's oldest property and the starting point of its winemaking history. The estate has belonged to Frescobaldi since the 11th century, while documents attest to wine production as early as around 1300.
Fresh, clay-rich soils, a mild climate and breezes from the Tyrrhenian Sea shape the gentle hills. Castiglioni Chianti represents the classical connection with Sangiovese, while Tenuta Frescobaldi Castiglioni and Giramonte broaden the estate's possibilities. The family's oldest property thus demonstrates particularly well that tradition at Frescobaldi by no means implies standing still.
Tenuta Perano – Chianti Classico at 500 metres
Tenuta Perano lies between Radda and Gaiole in the historic heart of Chianti Classico. Frescobaldi acquired the estate in 2014, but the place itself reaches much further back into the history of the appellation: as early as 1716, Perano lay within the Chianti zone defined by Cosimo III de' Medici.
At around 500 metres, the vineyards form a natural amphitheatre opening towards the southwest. Steep slopes, stony soils and altitude create conditions in which Sangiovese can ripen slowly while retaining freshness. Tenuta Perano, the Riserva and Rialzi bring this particular place into increasingly precise focus.
One family – but no uniform wines
Nipozzano, Pomino, CastelGiocondo, Castiglioni and Perano could hardly be more different in terms of landscape and style. That is precisely where the fascination of Frescobaldi lies. Their common thread does not come from a cellar recipe, but from the conviction that each estate should express its own origin.
Chianti Rufina and Brunello, high-altitude Chardonnay and Chianti Classico, Sangiovese and international grape varieties therefore sit naturally side by side. More than 700 years of winemaking history provide not only tradition, but above all experience – and the freedom to understand that great wines do not have to taste the same everywhere.
Anyone exploring Frescobaldi is therefore discovering less a single style than different landscapes of Tuscany. And that is where the most exciting journey begins: with the estate, its origin and finally the wine that brings that place most convincingly into the glass.
Frequently asked questions about Frescobaldi
Is Frescobaldi a single winery?
Frescobaldi is a historic Florentine family business with several independent wine estates in Tuscany. The individual estates are not intended to reproduce one uniform style, but to express the different soils, elevations, grape varieties and climatic conditions of their respective origins.
How long has the Frescobaldi family been producing wine?
The documented winemaking history stretches back around 700 years. At Tenuta Castiglioni, the historical starting point of Frescobaldi's wine production, viticulture is documented as early as around 1300. The family business is managed by the 30th generation.
Which Frescobaldi estates can you find at SUPERIORE.DE?
SUPERIORE.DE focuses on five estates: Castello Nipozzano in Chianti Rufina, Castello Pomino in the hills east of Florence, Tenuta CastelGiocondo in Montalcino, Tenuta Castiglioni in the Val di Pesa and Tenuta Perano in Chianti Classico.
Which grape varieties define Frescobaldi's wines?
Sangiovese plays the leading role at several estates, including Nipozzano, CastelGiocondo, Castiglioni and Perano. Pomino, by contrast, has an exceptionally long tradition with Chardonnay and Pinot Nero. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and other international grape varieties have also long formed part of the Frescobaldi repertoire at individual estates.
What distinguishes the individual Frescobaldi estates?
Above all, their origins. Altitude, exposure, soils, climate and grape varieties can differ considerably from one estate to another. Frescobaldi therefore explicitly aims to make these differences visible in the wines rather than imposing a uniform style on the estates. SUPERIORE.DE
