On the CastelGiocondo label, a condottiero is depicted on horseback: Guidoriccio da Fogliano, the figure from Simone Martini's famous fresco in Siena's Palazzo Pubblico, who once led the siege of Montemassi Castle. For the Frescobaldi family, this image marks the beginning of their centuries-long adventure with wine. The estate itself dates back to a fortress built in 1100, whose origins lie far before the start of modern viticulture.

The grapes for Ripe al Convento grow on the highest hills of the estate, where wine was already being produced as far back as the 19th century: 450 metres above sea level, on south-facing slate and marl soils, which lend the Sangiovese here a rare concentration. Harvested by hand and selected grape by grape, the wine ferments in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks with frequent pumping over in the early stages, before maturing in wood. It is only released in the sixth year after harvest, following the maturation period prescribed for the Riserva and further bottle ageing.

In 2019, the Consorzio rated this a five-star vintage, and the wine impressively demonstrates its class: a brilliant ruby red, with notes of wild rose and violet, followed by redcurrant, blueberry and pomegranate. Subtle spice and elegant tertiary notes lend further depth. Long and persistent on the palate, with a dense, superbly integrated tannin structure.
