Pettineo is more than just a contrada, it is a place of remembrance. Old Frappato vines, some of which are over 60 years old, take root here on sandy, slightly ferrous soil with a limestone base. The vines grow like bushes as Alberello, densely planted, deeply rooted – they yield little, but the essentials. For Arianna Occhipinti, this location is a key to the soul of Frappato: a wine that does not shine in its fruit, but in its quiet, almost floating intensity. The harvest by hand and fermented spontaneously with natural yeasts in cement tanks for around 30 days on the skins – gently, without mechanical intervention. The wine is matured traditionally and with restraint for around 20 months in cement tanks.

In the glass, the wine is a bright, vibrant ruby red colour. The nose opens with an ethereal clarity: pomegranate, wild strawberry, hibiscus, orange peel, plus notes of laurel, dried thyme and a hint of earth. Not a quaffable charmer, but a fragrant but multi-layered storyteller that only gradually reveals its life in layers. Almost dance-like on the palate, with fine, linear acidity, chiselled tannins and a stony, quiet length. The texture is transparent, but not fragile – the wine carries. Pettineo is Arianna Occhipinti's most poetic interpretation of Frappato – serious, lucid and full of inner tension. "The Frappato has the most ethereal nose in the range, with a mix of Chambolle-like redcurrants, dusty flowers and incense with unmistakable Mediterranean flavours of garrigue and tapenade. The Frappato places the same emphasis on drinkability and purity of fruit as the entry-level Frappato, but the tannins are a little racier and the flavours even more varied. Blood orange and iron flavours linger on the long, mineral finish. The PT comes from 60-year-old vineyards planted on a mixture of red sand and yellow tuff in the Contrada Pettineo and, according to Arianna Occhipinti, embodies grace and lightness." Decanter
