The name is history. Sapaio – an old Tuscan grape variety, long forgotten, but not its memory. When Massimo Piccin founded his winery in 1999, he chose this name as a sign of his deep connection to the terroir. A tribute to what was and a promise of what was to come. The vineyards extend over the municipalities of Bibbona and Castagneto Carducci, 40 hectares on quaternary deposits, from loose, coarse-grained sand deposits to alluvial soils with calcareous subsoil. Just ten kilometres from the sea, a microclimate that brings Bordeaux varieties to life. Since 2015, Piccin has been going his own way: instead of the prestigious Bolgheri Superiore DOCG, he deliberately chooses the free IGT Toscana, just to be able to add the handful of grapes from Bibbona that make Sapaio what it is today. Sometimes greatness means renouncing titles and regulations.
The 2021 surprises with its accessibility. Sapaio usually takes years to open up, but this one is already seductive. Ripe and lush on the palate, with a surprisingly generous flavour profile. Not overripe despite its richness, primary fruit still dominates, but the complexity is already there. Deep ruby red in colour with violet reflections. The bouquet enchants with crushed redcurrants, hints of paprika and wild strawberries, interwoven with spices, cedar wood and tobacco. Powerful and gripping on the palate, with silky tannins and mouth-filling structure. Already harmonious, but with huge potential for the coming decades. A Supertuscan that has nothing to hide – neither Sassicaia nor Ornellaia. Massimo Piccin has done it: his passion for wine has become world class. The Sapaio 2021 is the embodiment of a dream come true. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, dark purple with a ruby touch. The nose with lots of blackberry, plum, behind it spicy cinnamon and juniper berries. Fruity on the palate with velvety, fine-meshed tannins, retronasal blood orange, good palate pressure through to the long finish. Beautiful!" Falstaff
"A restrained wine with flavours of bark, spice, vibrant cassis, flowers and Mediterranean herbs. Medium-bodied, it shows good fruit concentration, suppleness, integrated acidity, firm, velvety tannins and a tight, balanced finish." James Suckling
"Open and smooth, this red is saturated with juicy blackberry, black currant and black cherry flavors, with accents of iron and spices. Its tannins are integrated, and this is long." Wine Spectator
"The 2021 shows crushed berries on the nose and hints of cocoa powder and crème fraîche in the background. Full-bodied but responsive, with an underlying vein of savoury minerals and a long, dry, tactile finish. A wine with great potential that still needs a little time to develop." Decanter
"The Podere Sapaio 2021 Sapaio comes from a highly anticipated vintage and shows extra volume and rich texture, while remaining incredibly concentrated throughout. The wine delivers a seamless quality in which the blended varieties – cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc are skilfully – are skilfully played off against each other to form the building blocks of this very beautiful wine. The finish is long and of balanced intensity. This brilliant spiciness is what characterises this vintage." Wine Advocate
