    • "Le Difese" Toscana IGT 2019

      “Le Difese” Toscana IGT 2019

Le Difese is one of the most beautiful price-quality wonders of Tuscany. Magnificent, sweetly perfumed fruit aromas in the opulent bouquet, just as generous and wide the long-lasting taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby red with a sparkling core. A hint of reduction on the nose, opens with air on cherries, cinnamon sticks, wild strawberries and bright spice notes. Clear and juicy on the palate, showing good drinkability, pithy salty tannin underpins the final." Falstaff

"Surprisingly pale - more Pinot-like than a Cabernet blend! A sweet-sour red-cherry fruit profile, with a notable herbal edge, perhaps reflecting the higher Sangiovese proportion than 2018. On swirling, some cassis joins the party and there's a background woody, cinnamon note. That sweet-sour sense comes through on the palate too, with a ripeness of red cherry and strawberry cut through with acidity. Pretty fine-grained, powdery tannins that are more refined than previous Le Difese vintages I have tasted. A touch of alcohol on the finish, but overall an enjoyable, perfumed red." Jancis Robinson

"Made with 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Sangiovese, this has enticing aromas of cassis, black tea, violet and wild herbs. Savory and elegantly structured, the medium-bodied palate shows ripe blackberry, star anise and a hint of coffee bean framed in lithe, polished tannins. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced." “Frank” Rosso Toscana IGT 2018

Deep ruby red with a beautiful sheen. On the nose some plum, black cherry with slightly animal notes. Fleshy and taut on the palate, very powerful and harmonious. Not an off-the-peg wine, but a stormy, tomboyish and gripping Cabernet with good length and a powerful finish. Not for elegance drinkers, but rather a crisp, opulent food companion that leaves nothing to be desired, especially with game dishes. Be sure to aerate it sufficiently! SUPERIORE.DE

Juicy, expressive red with a lot of varietal typicity. Fine floral notes, crunchy red stone fruits on the palate, the gripping tannin gives a lot of backbone, sweet spice and fruit flavours in the final. Delicious and of fabulous purity. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Ampeleia 2018 Cabernet Franc is an organic wine that opens to a luminous dark-ruby appearance. The wine is made with 20% whole cluster, and the fruit is sourced from the high-elevation Vigna dell'Asina, which is characterized by local soils known as galestro and palombino with elements of schist and limestone. This wine is very true to the variety with dark fruit and blackberry, spice and a green note of grilled rosemary or wild sage." Robert Parker

"Textbook varietal aromas and flavors of black currant, iron, olive and tobacco are joined by blackberry and Mediterranean scrub in this supple red. It firms up by the lingering aftertaste, where the black fruit persists." Wine Spectator

"We always love this idiosyncratic cabernet franc; this year, the essence-like, primary-fruited nose comes complete with sea-urchin, iodine and oyster-shell character to add to overtones of lavender, violets and citrus. Medium-bodied, soft and fruity on the palate, yet with great depth of herbal and mineral flavors. Very tangy and acidity-driven. Wonderful to drink now." James Suckling

“CiFRA” Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana IGP 2018 (BIO)

Star oenologist Luca D'Attoma has vinified a wonderfully agile and elegant Cabernet Franc with Cifra. Light ruby violet, profound aroma with notes of blackberries and liquorice. Rich fruit on the palate with taut tannins and a mineral final. A delight from the Tuscan coast from biodynamic (Demeter) cultivation. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense, bright ruby red with a slightly lightening core. The nose is marked by clear fruit, ripe raspberry with blackcurrant. Shows uncomplicated and fresh in the mouth, juicy mid-palate, youthful with fresh tannin until the final." Falstaff

"Bottled in July 2019, the 2018 Cabernet Franc CiFRA is an easy take on this Bordeaux grape that saw only cement. Without the wood, this is a tighter and spicier expression with lots of tension, freshness and energy" Robert Parker

"A beautiful, bright red with sliced berries and cherries, as well as fresh flowers. Medium to full body. Light tannins and a crisp finish. Shows focus and finesse, as always. No wood. All cement. From biodynamically grown grapes." James Suckling

"The 2018 Cifra is a total knockout. Fresh, vibrant and full of aromatic intensity, the 2018 boasts superb flavor intensity and exceptional balance. Inky red and purplish berry fruit, lavender, spice and dried flowers all race out of the glass in a boisterous, generous wine that hits all the right notes." Vinous

"Impenetrable garnet with slight rim brightening. Fruit-driven bouquet of small dark forest berries, lots of cassis, cloves, a hint of cinnamon. Builds up juicily, with beautiful interplay between acidity and fruit, grippy bound tannin, supple, opens up finesse-rich on the finish, with enormous drinking flow." Falstaff

"Made with organically grown Cabernet Franc, this opens with aromas of black plum, cedar and Mediterranean scrub. The bright, savory palate offers black currant, rhubarb, ground clove and star anise alongside polished tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"The 2019 CiFRA, 100% Cabernet Franc, is an attractive, mid-weight wine done in a style that exalts freshness. Even so, there is plenty of the natural richness that makes Maremma so compelling. Rose petal, cinnamon and sweet red berry fruit are nicely lifted throughout. CiFra is done with shorter macerations than the flagship wines, aged in cement and bottled before the following harvest, all decisions taken keep the flavors vibrant. That certainly works here." Vinous

"Lots of fun and delicious raspberry, light basil-leaf and walnut character. It's medium-to full-bodied with a well poised, fruity finish. No wood. All in cement." James Suckling

"Made with biodynamic and organic fruit, the Duemani 2019 Cabernet Franc CiFRA is a bright and articulate entry-level wine from this top-level estate. The grape is left to speak for itself, as the wine sees very little meddling or intervention back at the winery. Most of the winemaking process is done in cement vats, and you taste the purity of the grape skins and juice as a result. Dark cherry and blackberry segue to tilled earth, dried oregano and cola. The results are fresh, tight and vertical." Robert Parker

    • Cabernet Sauvignon "No. 2" Maremma Toscana IGT 2018

Cabernet Sauvignon “No. 2” Maremma Toscana IGT 2018

This is the second vintage of the pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Barbara Widmer's Maremma-Dependance. Strong, deep-dark ruby red, in the nose animating smell of dark berries, coffee, cocoa, eucalyptus and spices. In the drink then notes of green paprika, fine sweetness and juiciness. The tannins are polished and prepare the way into a long, silky finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Brancaia 2018 Maremma Toscana Brancaia N. 2 (a pure Cabernet Sauvignon) sees its fruit sourced from coastal Tuscany, and you can taste that extra ripeness and sun-kissed fruit as a result. The bouquet opens quickly to dark cherry and blackberry, dried cassis and sweet spice. You get a lot of Tuscan sunshine for your buck, and it's worth every last cent, especially if you are enjoying this well-priced wine in a cool, northern climate with some grilled sausage and onions." After almost two centuries, it is time to set a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity-spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, taut, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Poggio al Lupo" Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2018

“Poggio al Lupo” Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2018

With his flagship Poggio al Lupo from the Magliano winery of the same name, Antonio Moretti has created an extremely varietal Cabernet Sauvignon. Its full bouquet of red fruits and spices is already delicious. On the palate, there is a lot of pressure and an equally generous variety of aromas of blackberries, dried cherries and young leather. Enveloped by a finely woven tannin, this typical Maremma wine goes gently and long into a very attractive finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Rich garnet. Great, open-hearted nose, of ripe wild berries, rich blackberries and some elderberries, cassis and cherry jam in the finish. Lush and soft on the palate, stretches wide with decent pressure, tuned and harmonious, showing fine fruit in the long finish." Falstaff

"The 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is an attractive, fleshy wine. I can't say it is especially varietal, but it does offer plenty of succulence in a fruity, early drinking style. All the elements are impeccably balanced." Vinous

"The Tenuta Sette Ponti 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon Poggio al Lupo shows a pure expression of the grape with fun little highlights of rosemary essence and dried oregano that are so specific to Tuscany. Otherwise, the wine mostly reverts to varietal tones of blackberry, dried cherry, spice, tar and leather. This is a full-bodied red to pair with your favorite pasta and meat ragù combination." Robert Parker

“Potenti” Cabernet Sauvignon Toscana IGT 2018

Potenti, a concentrated and single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, is rich in finesse with a touch of rurality, typical of the wines from this wild and untamed corner of Tuscany. Refined bouquet, rich and dense on the palate, the mineral note closely interwoven with the wood nuances. Potenti will develop into a great wine in a few years. SUPERIORE.DE

"Powerfully shining ruby red with violet accent. Pronounced aroma of ripe plums, some rum pot, then mint and delicate wood spice and graphite. Enters the mouth smoothly, with juicy round acidity, velvety tannins a little coarse, full-bodied with some opulence, but balanced overall, finishing on lush forest fruit." Falstaff

"Aromas of dark plums, blackberries, incense, cloves, dried violets and earth. It's medium-to full-bodied with ripe, velvety tannins and fresh acidity. Concentrated and spicy with delicious chocolate character on the palate. Creamy, succulent finish." James Suckling

    Things to know aboutCabernet Sauvignon

    Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is considered the king among the red grape varieties. It thus occupies the same place as the Chardonnay among the white varieties. There is no wine-growing region in the world which is suitable for the cultivation of red wine grapes and in which a significant stock of Cabernet Sauvignon cannot be found. The grape variety is also widespread in Italy.

The greatest advantage of Cabernet Sauvignon is its unbroken individuality. It retains its varietal characteristics under almost all circumstances and is the easiest of all red wines to identify. He can also perfectly interpret the terroir in his own way. In addition, it is of course the quality and character of his wines that have made him the top star of red wine varieties. It is not so much the fruits, which are often compared to currants, or the aromas described as paprika scents that lift Cabernet Sauvignon to the top of the Wine Olympics. Rather, it is his ability to age in the bottle for a long time, in which he presents himself indescribably complex, distinguished, full of dignity and unbelievably profound, multi-layered and lasting like hardly any other wine.

A high content of dyestuffs and tannins are the tools for ripening. Cabernet Sauvignon also responds very well to ageing in small barrels of new oak wood. It then absorbs additional tannins from the oak wood, which further improve its ageing potential. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the darkest wines ever. Only the black wines of Cahors and wines from the grape variety Syrah (Shiraz) have even deeper colors. The wines from Cabernet Sauvignon have a fruity charm and prove youthful freshness.

In the vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon is no more problematic than most other grape varieties. It sprouts later than Merlot, which makes it less sensitive to spring frosts. The tendency to trickle is not particularly great, so that the economic yields can be achieved regularly and reliably. The berries are small, dark coloured, extremely thick skinned and the seeds rich in tannins. In the early years, the fruit of some wines suffered from the hardness of the tannins. In the meantime, however, the wine producers in Tuscany are leading the way in producing first-class, fruity wines from Cabernet Sauvignon that are ready to drink early.

In Italy, Cabernet Sauvignon used not to be very different from Cabernet Franc for a long time, but today it is recognized as being of higher value and is planted neatly on its own. In the meantime, the grape variety has spread throughout the country - in northern Italy from South Tyrol via Venice to the Nebbiolo and Barbera strongholds of Piedmont.

In Tuscany, the resounding success of the Super Tuscans was only made possible by blending traditional Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon. And many a Chianti Classico today contains a good proportion of this noble variety to strengthen its contours. Cabernet Sauvignon is also widespread in southern Italy. In Sardinia in particular, it performs outstandingly, often in blending with the great Sicilian red wine variety Nero d'Avola. Cabernet Sauvignon can be found in the most expensive wine of Italy - the Sassicaia.

    Cabernet Franc

The red Cabernet Franc is often used as a "cousin" of Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to the similarity in appearance, many ampelographers today assume that this is an old mutation of Cabernet Sauvignon, specially adapted to the wetter soils and cooler climate of the French Libournais.

The budding of the Cabernet Franc begins one to two weeks before the Cabernet Sauvignon, as with the Merlot. Thus this variety is more exposed to the unpredictable whims of the weather. In cool and wet conditions during the flowering period, the Cabernet Franc shows a greater tendency to discard the fruit set, i.e. to trickle - but not as pronounced as the Merlot. Grape ripening begins one to two weeks earlier than with the relatively late ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Frequent rainfall at harvest time is less of a problem for the Cabernet Franc than for its more prominent relative.

Cabernet Franc is widespread in northern Italy, where it has only recently begun to be distinguished from Cabernet Sauvignon. Labelling practices have evolved in such a way that Cabernet Sauvignon is now identified by its full name, while the numerous bottles labelled Cabernet usually contain Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc cultivation centres are located in South Tyrol/Alto Adige, Trentino, the Garda Bresciano Riviera, the whole of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The wines are spicy and spicy and usually have a herbal aroma. They are also lighter, lighter and have fewer tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon. SUPERIORE.DE
