    • "Le Difese" Toscana IGT 2019

      “Le Difese” Toscana IGT 2019

Le Difese is one of the most beautiful price-quality wonders of Tuscany. Magnificent, sweetly perfumed fruit aromas in the opulent bouquet, just as generous and wide the long-lasting taste. SUPERIORE.DE

"Surprisingly pale - more Pinot-like than a Cabernet blend! A sweet-sour red-cherry fruit profile, with a notable herbal edge, perhaps reflecting the higher Sangiovese proportion than 2018. On swirling, some cassis joins the party and there's a background woody, cinnamon note. That sweet-sour sense comes through on the palate too, with a ripeness of red cherry and strawberry cut through with acidity. Pretty fine-grained, powdery tannins that are more refined than previous Le Difese vintages I have tasted. A touch of alcohol on the finish, but overall an enjoyable, perfumed red." Jancis Robinson

“Burdese” Rosso Sicilia Menfi DOC 2015

A Bordeaux blend in a class of its own! Deep concentrated ruby red, dense and intense aroma of red fruits with notes of leather, earth and minerals, with hints of vanilla and sandalwood. Full-bodied on the palate, energetic tannins, carried by a dense structure, leading into a long-lasting final. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby with a rich violet shimmer. Very intense nose with lots of ripe dark berry fruit, at the beginning lots of tobacco and leather, then full of dark currants and blackberries, carob in the background. Straightforward and clear on the palate, lots of juicy fruit, then opens up with firm, sturdy tannin, gives the wine lots of grip, long finish." Falstaff

"Made with Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, this opens with aromas of dark-skinned berry, bell pepper and tilled earth. The structured palate offers black plum, white pepper, mocha and tobacco alongside smooth tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc offers power and density with lots of sound varietal purity. The 2015 Sicilia Menfi Burdese is a textured red wine with rich and succulent characteristics that flow to black fruit, spice, tar and smoke. I like the restrained intensity of this sunny and warm vintage." Robert Parker

Deep ruby red with a beautiful sheen. On the nose some plum, black cherry with slightly animal notes. Fleshy and taut on the palate, very powerful and harmonious. • Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)

Cabernet Franc Costa Toscana IGT 2018 (BIO)

Juicy, expressive red with a lot of varietal typicity. Fine floral notes, crunchy red stone fruits on the palate, the gripping tannin gives a lot of backbone, sweet spice and fruit flavours in the final. Delicious and of fabulous purity. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Ampeleia 2018 Cabernet Franc is an organic wine that opens to a luminous dark-ruby appearance. The wine is made with 20% whole cluster, and the fruit is sourced from the high-elevation Vigna dell'Asina, which is characterized by local soils known as galestro and palombino with elements of schist and limestone. This wine is very true to the variety with dark fruit and blackberry, spice and a green note of grilled rosemary or wild sage." Robert Parker

"Textbook varietal aromas and flavors of black currant, iron, olive and tobacco are joined by blackberry and Mediterranean scrub in this supple red. It firms up by the lingering aftertaste, where the black fruit persists." Wine Spectator

"We always love this idiosyncratic cabernet franc; this year, the essence-like, primary-fruited nose comes complete with sea-urchin, iodine and oyster-shell character to add to overtones of lavender, violets and citrus. Medium-bodied, soft and fruity on the palate, yet with great depth of herbal and mineral flavors. Very tangy and acidity-driven. Wonderful to drink now." James Suckling

    • Cabernet Sauvignon "No. 2" Maremma Toscana IGT 2018

Cabernet Sauvignon “No. 2” Maremma Toscana IGT 2018

This is the second vintage of the pure Cabernet Sauvignon from Barbara Widmer's Maremma-Dependance. Strong, deep-dark ruby red, in the nose animating smell of dark berries, coffee, cocoa, eucalyptus and spices. In the drink then notes of green paprika, fine sweetness and juiciness. The tannins are polished and prepare the way into a long, silky finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The Brancaia 2018 Maremma Toscana Brancaia N. 2 (a pure Cabernet Sauvignon) sees its fruit sourced from coastal Tuscany, and you can taste that extra ripeness and sun-kissed fruit as a result. The bouquet opens quickly to dark cherry and blackberry, dried cassis and sweet spice. You get a lot of Tuscan sunshine for your buck, and it's worth every last cent, especially if you are enjoying this well-priced wine in a cool, northern climate with some grilled sausage and onions." • "Philip" Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

      “Philip” Rosso Toscana IGT 2016

After almost two centuries, it is time to set a "monument" to the enthusiastic grape grower Philip Mazzei (1730-1816). In the form of this single-varietal Cabernet Sauvignon this succeeds extraordinarily well. Elegant deep dark colour, classic aromas, complex fruity-spicy taste, tannin and acidity well proportioned, taut, structured and persistent. SUPERIORE.DE

"It shows terrific balance and intensity in this classic vintage. Dark fruit, blackberry, cassis, spice, tar and leather build intensity as the wine warms in the glass. It demonstrates impeccable balance and beautifully polished length, making this a wine that offers elegance and power in equal measure." Robert Parker

    • "Dulcamara" Rosso Costa Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

“Dulcamara” Rosso Costa Toscana IGT 2016 (BIO)

Deep dark ruby red. In the dark berry scent a Bordeaux blend that is already quite typically Cabernet-dominated - one could also guess Bolgheri - but there is also something peppery-spicy, for wine lovers certainly a good "pirate" for a blind tasting. On the palate then juicy black currants, blackberries and sour cherries, powerful, but not thick, but very lively, with a high drinking flow. Elegant tannin structure, long finish, with a lot of ripe fruit and delicate spice lingering. Good ripening potential, but is also already wonderful to drink now, if you give it some air. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deepest ruby red. In the nose medium expressiveness, after ripe cherries and blackberries, also has something salty. Opens up on the palate with tightly woven tannins, rich structure with creamy fruit, then a delicate after-drying in the aftertaste". Falstaff

"Aromas of blueberries and black licorice follow through to a full body with medium-ripe tannins. Hint of chocolate on a flavorful finish. From organically grown grapes." James Suckling

    • "Ampeleia" Costa Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

“Ampeleia” Costa Toscana IGT 2017 (BIO)

Ampeleia is the top wine of the winery and has been vinified exclusively from Cabernet Franc since the 2015 vintage. A wine of personality and character, its elegance and fruitiness make it a fascinating interpretation of the new and different Maremma. SUPERIORE.DE

"Bright ruby red with a slightly brightening rim. Inviting nose with notes of goji berries, wild blueberries and raspberries, slightly resinous notes. Juicy and round on the palate, grippy tannins, firm pressure on the final." Falstaff

"The organic 2017 Ampeleia is a pure expression of Cabernet Franc with fruit selected from across various parcels planted at a cool 500 to 600 meters above sea level. The wine sees 15 days of fermentation on the skins in large oak casks. This opens to a dark color and concentration, showing pretty aromas of pressed rose, tart cherry, dried apricot and tilled soil. Like the other wines from Ampeleia, this expression shows a lasting sense of inner elegance that transcends the heat and drought of the 2017 vintage." Robert Parker

“Tenuta Belguardo” Rosso Maremma Toscana DOC 2016

Interesting bouquet of eucalyptus, rosemary and other garden herbs, underpinned by damp forest soil and a beautiful blackberry nose. On the palate, multi-layered and complex after coffee, raspberry jam with an exotic note. Wonderfully aromatic, complex and long - a successful and independent interpretation of the Cabernet grape. SUPERIORE.DE

"Intense and deep dark ruby red. Noble nose of fine wood spice, dark chocolate, blackberry, sage and ripe wild strawberries, balsamic. Dense and rich on the palate, spans a wide arc, dark and ripe fruit, multilayered." Falstaff

"An earthy, meaty version, this is nonetheless saturated with fruit, exhibiting plum, cherry, earth, leather, sanguine and saline flavors. Dense with tannins, this leaves a mouthcoating yet fresh impression on the finish." Wine Spectator

"A pretty blend of cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc with dark berries, blueberries and hints of walnuts. Full body, firm tannins and a polished and caressing finish." James Suckling

"This is a terrific wine, both opulent and generous. The 2016 Maremma Toscana Tenuta Belguardo is a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc that adopts a playfully rich and contemporary style with plenty of southern Tuscan sunshine locked deep within the dark ripeness and softness of the fruit. This vintage, with its hot sunny days and cool nights, delivers precision and balance throughout. This is the top-end wine from the Mazzei family's property, Tenuta Belguardo, along the Tuscan Coast." Robert Parker

    Things to know aboutCabernet Sauvignon

    Cabernet Sauvignon

Cabernet Sauvignon is considered the king among the red grape varieties. It thus occupies the same place as the Chardonnay among the white varieties. There is no wine-growing region in the world which is suitable for the cultivation of red wine grapes and in which a significant stock of Cabernet Sauvignon cannot be found. The grape variety is also widespread in Italy.

The greatest advantage of Cabernet Sauvignon is its unbroken individuality. It retains its varietal characteristics under almost all circumstances and is the easiest of all red wines to identify. He can also perfectly interpret the terroir in his own way. In addition, it is of course the quality and character of his wines that have made him the top star of red wine varieties. It is not so much the fruits, which are often compared to currants, or the aromas described as paprika scents that lift Cabernet Sauvignon to the top of the Wine Olympics. Rather, it is his ability to age in the bottle for a long time, in which he presents himself indescribably complex, distinguished, full of dignity and unbelievably profound, multi-layered and lasting like hardly any other wine.

A high content of dyestuffs and tannins are the tools for ripening. Cabernet Sauvignon also responds very well to ageing in small barrels of new oak wood. It then absorbs additional tannins from the oak wood, which further improve its ageing potential. Cabernet Sauvignon is one of the darkest wines ever. Only the black wines of Cahors and wines from the grape variety Syrah (Shiraz) have even deeper colors. The wines from Cabernet Sauvignon have a fruity charm and prove youthful freshness.

In the vineyard, Cabernet Sauvignon is no more problematic than most other grape varieties. It sprouts later than Merlot, which makes it less sensitive to spring frosts. The tendency to trickle is not particularly great, so that the economic yields can be achieved regularly and reliably. The berries are small, dark coloured, extremely thick skinned and the seeds rich in tannins. In the early years, the fruit of some wines suffered from the hardness of the tannins. In the meantime, however, the wine producers in Tuscany are leading the way in producing first-class, fruity wines from Cabernet Sauvignon that are ready to drink early.

In Italy, Cabernet Sauvignon used not to be very different from Cabernet Franc for a long time, but today it is recognized as being of higher value and is planted neatly on its own. In the meantime, the grape variety has spread throughout the country - in northern Italy from South Tyrol via Venice to the Nebbiolo and Barbera strongholds of Piedmont.

In Tuscany, the resounding success of the Super Tuscans was only made possible by blending traditional Sangiovese with Cabernet Sauvignon. And many a Chianti Classico today contains a good proportion of this noble variety to strengthen its contours. Cabernet Sauvignon is also widespread in southern Italy. In Sardinia in particular, it performs outstandingly, often in blending with the great Sicilian red wine variety Nero d'Avola. Cabernet Sauvignon can be found in the most expensive wine of Italy - the Sassicaia.

    Cabernet Franc

The red Cabernet Franc is often used as a "cousin" of Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to the similarity in appearance, many ampelographers today assume that this is an old mutation of Cabernet Sauvignon, specially adapted to the wetter soils and cooler climate of the French Libournais.

The budding of the Cabernet Franc begins one to two weeks before the Cabernet Sauvignon, as with the Merlot. Thus this variety is more exposed to the unpredictable whims of the weather. In cool and wet conditions during the flowering period, the Cabernet Franc shows a greater tendency to discard the fruit set, i.e. to trickle - but not as pronounced as the Merlot. Grape ripening begins one to two weeks earlier than with the relatively late ripening Cabernet Sauvignon. Frequent rainfall at harvest time is less of a problem for the Cabernet Franc than for its more prominent relative.

Cabernet Franc is widespread in northern Italy, where it has only recently begun to be distinguished from Cabernet Sauvignon. Labelling practices have evolved in such a way that Cabernet Sauvignon is now identified by its full name, while the numerous bottles labelled Cabernet usually contain Cabernet Franc. The Cabernet Franc cultivation centres are located in South Tyrol/Alto Adige, Trentino, the Garda Bresciano Riviera, the whole of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia.

The wines are spicy and spicy and usually have a herbal aroma. They are also lighter, lighter and have fewer tannins than Cabernet Sauvignon. SUPERIORE.DE
