Luigi Veronelli was regarded as Italy’s most influential wine critic of the 20th century. In the 1970s, he named the Müller-Thurgau from Pojer e Sandri’s Località Palai vineyard his absolute benchmark wine for the variety. Mario Pojer recalls: “Today, 50 years on, we pay tribute to the variety that has found its ideal habitat.” Fifty years later – the character remains the same. The conviction remains. Palai lies at 700 metres. This is the estate’s highest vineyard – the very same that gives Pinot Noir its alpine coolness and Riesling its precision! For Müller-Thurgau, it is the ideal terroir: a long growing season, cool nights, pronounced temperature variation, chalky soils, and the breeze of the Ora del Garda.
The grapes for the Monogramma are harvested 10 to 12 days after normal ripeness – deliberately late to allow for a hint of botrytis, which lends the wine additional aromatic depth. Then comes the estate’s philosophy: grape washing, oxygen-free pressing, fermentation in steel, and bottle ageing. Bottled, like almost all their wines, with a screw cap – a deliberate statement: this wine needs no cork to be taken seriously, and it certainly remains fresh and unadulterated as a result.
Straw-yellow with greenish highlights. The bouquet is intense and slightly aromatic: yellow fruit, citrus, tropical fruit, and, in the background, the characteristic hydrocarbon notes that betray the Riesling heritage of the crossbreed. On the palate, full-bodied, round and smooth, with a freshness that carries the final. Veronelli’s benchmark – still holds true today and makes a statement. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2022 Müller Thurgau Monogramma mixes crushed nectarines and apricots with white smoke and dried herbs. It is pure and lifted in style, with distinct minerality and depths of crisp orchard fruits. This wine echoes with zesty tension, leaving nuances of sour citrus and a salty flourish that lingers long." Vinous
"The nose opens with late-picked tropical fruit and citrus and then the floral aromas of the variety and at the back, a delicate note of evolution. On the palate, the fruit and the luscious texture is underpinned by firm acidity that gives freshness to the lingering dry finish. A wine with the elegance and precision that are the hallmarks of the pioneering estate founded by Fiorentino Sandri and genial winemaker Mario Pojer." Decanter
