Trefiano was created in 1979 from an idea by Vittorio Contini Bonacossi to show all the complexity and longevity that Carmignano is capable of. Named after the historic hamlet of Trefiano, where a magnificent 16th century villa is surrounded by two exquisite vineyards, this Riserva represents the absolute pinnacle of what Tenuta di Capezzana has to offer. With just over 5,000 bottles produced each year, Trefiano is one of the rarest and most sought-after Tuscan riservas – a wine that not only celebrates the present, but was created for the future.
The history of Capezzana dates back to 804, when the first parchments document the leasing of vineyards and olive groves. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times until Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi returned to Italy in 1920 after years in Spain and acquired the estate from Sara de Rothschild, the widow of Raimondo Franchetti. Not satisfied with this first property, Alessandro acquired the two neighbouring estates "Il Poggetto" and "Trefiano" – the estate that today lends its name to the family's most prestigious wine. What Alessandro began, his descendants continued with tireless passion: his son Augusto, then his son Ugo, who, after studying agriculture, was determined to raise the quality of the wines to a new level – a remarkable vision at a time when most producers still sold their grapes by weight. It was Ugo who replanted Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1950s and fought tirelessly for Carmignano to be granted DOC status in 1975 – as the first Tuscan appellation to officially include Cabernet in the cuvée.
Trefiano embodies this tradition to perfection. The cuvée of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet and 10% Canaiolo comes from the two vineyards around Villa Trefiano at an altitude of 200 metres, facing south to south-west. The vines, which are on average 23 years old, are rooted in slatey clay soil, which gives the wine the mineral depth and structure that distinguishes it from other Carmignanos. Seven days of alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by thirteen days of maceration with the skins at 26 to 28 degrees. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French tonneaux, where the wine then matures for eighteen months – significantly longer than the Villa di Capezzana. Bottling is followed by at least one year of ageing in the bottle before Trefiano leaves the estate. In total, a good three years pass from the vineyard to marketing – time that you can taste in every sip.
Intense ruby red with garnet-coloured reflections. The bouquet unfolds an opulent aroma of ripe red fruit – cherry, plum, blackberry –sweet spicy notes of vanilla, cinnamon and clove, underpinned by liquorice and fine leather nuances. A revelation on the palate: the wine is perfectly balanced and harmonious, with a delicate, finely woven tannin structure that lends elegance to the full body. The acidity is present but flawlessly integrated and carries the long, spicy finish, which ends with notes of sweet liquorice and dark chocolate. Trefiano is not a wine for the impatient. Capezzana knows that Carmignano Riserva needs years to develop its full complexity and is therefore deliberately holding back thousands of bottles to release after a decade. Its true potential will only be revealed in the coming years. A wine of monumental elegance and impressive longevity, proving that Carmignano wines are among the great growths of Tuscany. "Intriguing aroma of cherries, liquorice and dried flowers; powerful texture, the tannins powdery and in harmony with the fresh acidity, ending on notes of forest fruits and leather. Convinces with its character." Vinum
"Provençal herbs and fresh plums on the nose. On the palate, it is medium to full-bodied and clear, with plums and a hint of orange peel. It still needs some time to mellow." James Suckling
