Trefiano was created in 1979 based on an idea by Vittorio Contini Bonacossi, with the aim of showcasing the full complexity and longevity of which Carmignano is capable. Named after the historic hamlet of Trefiano, where a magnificent 16th-century villa is surrounded by two exquisite vineyards, this Riserva represents the very pinnacle of what the Tenuta di Capezzana has to offer. With just over 5,000 bottles produced each year, Trefiano is one of the rarest and most sought-after Tuscan Riservas – a wine that not only celebrates the present but was created for the future.
The history of Capezzana dates back to the year 804, when the first parchments documented the leasing of vineyards and olive groves. Over the centuries, the estate changed hands several times until Count Alessandro Contini Bonacossi returned to Italy in 1920 after years spent in Spain and purchased the estate from Sara de Rothschild, the widow of Raimondo Franchetti. Not content with this initial acquisition, Alessandro purchased the two neighbouring estates, ‘Il Poggetto’ and ‘Trefiano’ – the very estate that today lends its name to the family’s most prestigious wine. What Alessandro began, his descendants continued with tireless passion: his son Augusto, then his grandson Ugo, who, after studying agriculture, was determined to raise the quality of the wines to a new level – a remarkable vision at a time when most producers were still selling their grapes by weight. It was Ugo who replanted Cabernet Sauvignon in the 1950s and fought tirelessly to ensure that Carmignano was granted DOC status in 1975 – , making it the first Tuscan appellation to officially include Cabernet in its blend.
Trefiano embodies this tradition to perfection. The cuvée, comprising 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet and 10% Canaiolo, comes from the two vineyards surrounding Villa Trefiano, situated at an altitude of 200 metres and facing south to south-west. The vines, averaging 23 years of age, are rooted in schist-rich clay soil, which lends the wine that mineral depth and structure that sets it apart from other Carmignanos. Seven days of alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel tanks, followed by thirteen days of maceration on the skins at 26 to 28 degrees. Malolactic fermentation takes place in French tonneaux, where the wine then matures for eighteen months – —significantly longer than the Villa di Capezzana. After bottling, the wine is aged in the bottle for at least one year before Trefiano leaves the estate. In total, a good three years pass from vineyard to market – — a period you can taste in every sip.
An intense ruby red with garnet-coloured highlights. The bouquet reveals opulent aromas of ripe red fruits – cherry, plum and blackberry –, accompanied by sweet spicy notes of vanilla, cinnamon and clove, underpinned by liquorice and subtle leathery nuances. On the palate, it is a revelation: the wine is perfectly balanced and harmonious, with a delicate, finely woven tannin structure that lends elegance to its full-bodied character. The acidity is present but impeccably integrated, supporting the long, spicy finish, which lingers with notes of sweet liquorice and dark chocolate. Trefiano is not a wine for the impatient. Capezzana knows that Carmignano Riserva takes years to develop its full complexity, and therefore deliberately holds back thousands of bottles to release them after a decade. Its true potential will only become apparent in the years to come. A wine of monumental elegance and impressive longevity, proving that Carmignano wines rank amongst Tuscany’s great wines. "An intriguing aroma of cherries, liquorice and dried flowers; a powerful texture, with powdery tannins in harmony with the fresh acidity, finishing on notes of wild berries and leather. Impressive for its character." Vinum
"On the nose, Provençal herbs and fresh plums. On the palate, it is medium-bodied to full-bodied and crisp, with notes of plum and a hint of orange peel. It still needs a little time to soften." James Suckling
"This Riserva from 2021 is dark black-red in colour, with splendidly ripe aromas of dimpled black plums, sage leaf and woodland undergrowth. It's full and expansive in the mouth with a rich, succulent tannic frame, sweeping yet fruit-saturated acidity and a long and reverberatively savoury finish: one of the most generous of this year's Top 50 reds, yet without sacrificing the nerve and nuance that seems to be a birthright of fine Tuscan red wines."
