Marianova is the first Bolgheri Superiore to be produced without Bordeaux grape varieties. Instead, it is a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Sangiovese, an idea of Michele Satta's son Giacomo, which was first produced in 2015.
Ruby red and restrained, it focuses on vibrant raspberry and cherry flavours overlaid with Indian spice notes and a hint of leather. It shows a firm but ripe tannin structure with crisp acidity and a great, spicy finish with roasted notes and plums. SUPERIORE.DE
"A convincing blend of Sangiovese and Syrah, which smells of raspberries, rose hips and violets, also fine spice; the attack is elegant, the tannins robust, supported by an excellent acidity, with smart mineral components on the long finish. A very successful wine that goes well with Viennese boiled beef." Vinum
"Bright ruby colour with a fine rim. Intense nose of juicy cherry and dried plum, black pepper, followed by slightly smoky, meaty notes. Powerful on the palate, spans a wide range, precise, ripe fruit at the core on finely woven tannins, keeps coming back on the long finish." Falstaff
"The Marianuova 2021 is a common blend of Sangiovese and Syrah in equal parts. The Sangiovese seems to dominate the aromatics, while the structure and depth of the Syrah is more prominent in the mid-palate and finish. Crushed flowers, sweet red cherry fruit, mint, spice and pipe tobacco take beautiful shape in the glass. I would cellar this wine for a few more years as the tannins are a bit firm." Vinous
"Currants, blackberries and dried herbs on the nose. Some nutmeg and paprika. The palate is firm and concentrated, with chewy tannins that are a little dusty but meld with broad layers of savoury fruit. Long and dense." James Suckling
"The 2021 Bolgheri Superiore Marianova is bottled in numbered bottles and consists of equal parts Syrah and Sangiovese. It offers medium to high intensity and bright red and purple fruit, which is a nice change of pace in this heavily Bordeaux orientated wine region. The lighter and more approachable concentration of this food-friendly wine contains spicy notes with sweet liquorice and grilled herbs on the finish." Wine Advocate
"A blend of Syrah and Sangiovese that opens with inviting scents of wild strawberries and herbs. In the mouth it is precise and vertical, with fresh and creamy red and black berry flavours, supported by fine, sandy tannins and good acidity. It is still a little closed, but there is still a lot to look forward to. Michele Satta's work is characterised by experimentation and innovation, and his wines have helped drive the name forward since its inception. Today, his son Giacomo runs the winery, and the Marianova, which was launched in the 2015 vintage, is the first Bolgheri Superiore DOC to be made entirely without Bordeaux varieties." Decanter
