Bisci not only produces excellent Verdicchio, but also very appealing Rosso, which is now made from 100% Merlot. Pure Merlot from the gentle slopes around the village of Togliano – powerful, but not heavy, and deliberately vinified without ageing in wood. The ageing in stainless steel and glass fermentation tanks allows the grape variety to appear with undisguised clarity: dark fruit, animating freshness and finely structured tannins. Rich ruby red in the glass with violet reflections. The aroma is intense and typical of the variety: black cherry, plum, some herbal spice and a hint of violet. The grapes for this smooth red wine thrive on loamy, calcareous soils with gravelly subsoil in the hills around Tramin. The extreme interplay of sunny Mediterranean days and cool downslope winds from the surrounding mountains ensures an intense aroma. After maceration at a controlled temperature, the wine matures in large wooden barrels. The colour in the glass is a deep ruby red. The nose exudes aromas of wild cherry and redcurrant, accompanied by delicate spice and a hint of plum. The palate is full-bodied and soft with a velvety texture, supple tannins and a tart, fruity length. In 1981, the Swiss Widmer family purchased the Brancaia hill in Castellina in Chianti; in 1998, they acquired land in the coastal Maremma region, overlooking the sea. This is where the Merlot vines for this Rosato are grown, at altitudes of between 75 and 175 metres on sandy loam, facing south-south-west and cooled by an almost constant sea breeze. The must ferments at a cool 16 degrees and rests on the fine lees for three months in a stainless-steel tank. A vibrant salmon-pink colour. On the nose, sliced white peach, lemon and apple, along with floral notes and a hint of watermelon. On the palate, it is medium-bodied, fresh and dry, with a crisp finish. For decades, Margreid has been considered the Merlot Eldorado of South Tyrol – and Alois Lageder as its master. On the gentle slopes between 230 and 320 metres above sea level, where the first international vines were planted back in 1934, Merlots of impressive clarity are produced. The bouquet reveals intense notes of wild berries and plums, interspersed with fine spices and a hint of graphite. The 2023 vintage brought a balanced climate with warm days and cool nights, which harmoniously combined freshness and ripeness. Martin Foradori's Merlot is characterised by cool noblesse and a clear structure. Dark berries, fine herbs and a hint of graphite characterise the bouquet. The ageing partly in large wooden barrels and partly in cement eggs gives the wine depth without excess weight. In 1984, Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti bought a dilapidated farmstead near Suvereto. No wine background, no generations of tradition – just a conviction: that the Colline Metallifere terroir can do more than it seemed at the time. The metal-rich, ferruginous clays of these hills between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Apuan Alps bear a fingerprint that no other growing region in Tuscany can replicate: mineral, salty, with a depth reminiscent of both earth and sea. Tierre is Tua Rita's 100 per cent Merlot expression of this terroir – more accessible than the legendary Redigaffi, but with the same soils, the same hands, the same attitude.

Mario Schiopetto was born in 1930, he grew up in the family-owned Osteria ai Pompieri and had his first professional experiences as a fireman and later as a truck driver. In 1963, guided only by his taste and love of wine, he began to devote himself to wine production in his parents' farm and produced the first pure Tocai in 1965. The historic label at the time included the drawing of his fire engine, which he also used to deliver the wine to customers. With the 2019 vintage, the winery recalled these historical roots and resumed the cute drawing on part of its wine labels.

Merlot from Friuli – this is no imitation of Bordeaux, but, like Refosco, a distinct style that balances ripe fruit, freshness and a connection to the terroir. With its single-varietal Merlot, Tunella has produced a wine that is both charming and full of character. The vines are planted on the stony Ponca soils of the Colli Orientali, which lend the wine structure and depth. On the nose: black cherry, ripe plum, subtle spice and a hint of tobacco. On the palate, it is juicy, balanced and lively, with good tannin structure and moderate alcohol. The vintage brings ripe fruit, yet ageing in stainless steel preserves the freshness and directness. The "Collection" range from the Bolzano Winery is based on a simple principle: the wines bear the winemaker’s name, and each bottle is a portrait of a person and their vineyard site – and thus entails a mutual responsibility. Christian Graf Huyn cultivates the Steinerhof in Siebeneich, one of the warmest wine-growing areas near Bolzano, on sun-exposed porphyry soils at altitudes of between 250 and 300 metres. Merlot is the predominant variety grown on his vineyards. Photovoltaic power is used to run the farm machinery, alongside electric tools, and brush work is used instead of herbicides. Hand-harvesting, thinning the foliage by hand – and much of the work is done by muscle power rather than machinery. Traditional fermentation of the must takes place in steel tanks, followed by ageing in large oak barrels and then bottle ageing.

Sodale presents Merlot in its purest and, at the same time, most charming form: this single-varietal wine is grown on limestone-rich hillsides around Montefiascone – where the cool evening air enhances its sophistication and elegance. In the glass, it is a luminous ruby red with a slight violet rim. The bouquet entices with aromas of blackcurrant, ripe plum, dark cherry and a hint of floral violet notes, underpinned by delicate herbal undertones. On the palate, it is juicy and harmonious, with velvety tannins, sustained fruit sweetness and a lively texture. The subtle acidity lends freshness and makes it a pleasure to drink, whilst the elegant, spicy finish leaves you wanting more. Not an opulent statement, but a stylish Merlot with balance, drinkability and character. Authentic, charming and quintessentially Cotarella. SUPERIORE.DE

South of Margreid lies the "15er" vineyard, which is characterised by deposits from the Fenner stream and the Adige river and has been planted largely with Merlot vines since 1957. Its location enjoys particularly good aeration thanks to the warm wind from Lake Garda, the Ora, which gives the wine a delicate structure and great finesse. Cherry red in colour with a ruby red sheen. Impressive bouquet of concentrated fruit, pepper and vegetal notes. The body is pleasantly medium-bodied, precise and balanced, with a fine bittersweet flavour and convincing freshness. SUPERIORE.DE

The Ponca stretches from the north-east of Udine to the south of Istria in Croatia. The part closest to the winery, which formed in the northernmost bays of the lagoon, lies on the current border between Italy and Slovenia. More precisely, it is divided between two countries, three provincial governments and four protected designations of origin from the Collio, the Colli Orientali del Friuli, the Brda and the Vipava. Initially, with the help of a few Slovenian friends and colleagues, they only experimented with Merlot grapes, but now the grapes are vinified in their own cellar. SUPERIORE.DE

One of the finest rosés from Lazio, with just 2,800 bottles produced: the grapes for the rare Sorèlle come from Cotarella's younger Merlot vineyards and the historic Aleatico vineyard. The grapes, pressed at different times, are left in the press for two hours at a temperature of 10°C after destemming. This allows the aromas to be locked in and their characteristics to be brought to the fore. Once alcoholic fermentation is complete, the wine remains in stainless steel tanks in contact with its fine lees. Only then is the blending carried out.

Cortona is only thirty kilometres from Montepulciano – and yet it is a different world. Here, on the high plateau with its dense Pliocene clays and iron oxide soils, around 300 metres above sea level, Merlot grows as if it had never been at home anywhere else. Federico Carletti recognised the potential early on – and In Violas was created in 2006. This was catalysed by his friendship with the Aliotti Tommasi family, owners of the same land. A Merlot that Carletti himself calls "con un'anima toscana". With a Tuscan soul. 100% Merlot, certified organic, 5,600 vines per hectare. Hand-picked, careful selection in the vineyard and in the cellar, fermentation and maceration in conical vats for 18 to 22 days, ageing in large oak barrels.

The grapes come from the historic centrepiece of the Planeta estate in Ulmo near Sambuca di Sicilia – a vineyard that was planted back in the mid-1980s. The vines are rooted at an altitude of around 250 metres in loamy-sandy soils with a high lime content, not far from Lake Arancio. Deep ruby red in the glass with a purple rim. The nose opens powerfully and invitingly: black cherry, plum, cassis and blueberry, accompanied by cocoa, tobacco, fresh leather and a subtle herbal spice. On the palate, Sito dell'Ulmo is both full-bodied and elegant: dense, with polished tannins, fresh acidity and a long, silky finish. The integration of the wood is finely balanced and the fruit always remains in the foreground. A Sicilian Merlot with format, origin and depth. SUPERIORE.DE

Le Redini Rosso consists mainly of Merlot and a small proportion of Alicante. The wine opens with dark intensity and a velvety texture with lots of fresh blackberry, plum, earth and wild rose. Pure red fruit on the palate, very supple, the delicate wood note well integrated. The refined notes of a Merlot from the Conca d'Oro come across wonderfully. SUPERIORE.DE

Merlot in South Tyrol – this may sound like a misunderstanding, but it is one of the most convincing arguments in favour of the versatility of the southern lowlands. Margreid, the southernmost corner of the winery, supplies the white wine grapes to Gennen and Magred. The same soil, the same climate, the same ora – is used by Levad for something completely different. White limestone gravel soil with a high humus content, 220 to 350 metres, south-east exposure. Warm summers, mild winters, the daily afternoon wind from Lake Garda. Conditions that allow Merlot to fully ripen without suffocating it in opulence. Hand-picked, careful destemming, fermentation in steel tanks with gentle pumping over – then twelve months in barriques and a further year of bottle ageing. The ageing gives structure, the soil gives minerality, the climate gives depth.
