Michele Satta's Bolgheri Rosso is far more than just his bestseller – it is the authentic calling card of a non-conformist who was one of the first in Bolgheri to have the courage to blend international grape varieties with Tuscan Sangiovese. As early as 1982, two years before the Bolgheri DOC was established, Satta took this revolutionary step, thereby creating an archetype of the modern Bolgheri style. What makes this wine so special is its unconventional blend: 30% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon form the backbone, complemented by 20% Merlot and 10% each of Syrah and – here lies Satta's stroke of genius – Teroldego. This rare grape variety, native to Trentino, lends the blend a unique freshness and mineral tension that clearly sets it apart from other Bolgheri wines.
The grapes come from the Torre, Vignanova, Poderini and Campastrello vineyards, where the various grape varieties are harvested by hand between early September (Merlot) and early October (Cabernet Sauvignon). Fermentation takes place in steel and concrete tanks using indigenous yeasts – the maceration period is determined by frequent tastings, a luxury that Satta, as a small producer, can afford. Following natural malolactic fermentation in November, the individual vinifications are blended and aged for 12 months – partly in 30-hl cement tanks, partly in second- and third-use barriques.
The result is an intense, ruby-red wine with lively fruit: redcurrant, blackberry and liquorice blend with floral notes of orange blossom and lemon zest. On the palate, the full finesse of this exceptional cuvée comes to the fore – medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a crisp freshness that lends the wine remarkable energy. The characteristic Teroldego component provides the mineral depth and elegance that make Michele Satta's wines unmistakable, even amongst the supposed giants of Bolgheri. SUPERIORE.DE
"A restrained style with aromas of embers, bark, violets and roses soaked in cassis. Crunchy on the medium-bodied palate, showing crisp acidity and ripe, chewy tannins. Slightly grainy yet flavorful in the finish." James Suckling
