Anyone who thinks of Chianti as the classic wine in a straw basket is not historically wrong – but is mistaken when it comes to the reality of one of Italy’s most diverse wine appellations. Chianti DOCG now covers a vast area in Tuscany, stretching from Florence to Siena and comprising seven sub-zones: Colli Senesi, Colli Fiorentini, Rufina, Montalbano, Montespertoli, Colli Aretini – and at its heart, Chianti Classico, which has long held its own DOCG status. What remains is a designation with a vast geographical scope, reflecting the Tuscan hinterland – and where, if one is serious about it, one can produce fascinatingly authentic wines, even without Fiasco Classico these days.

Salcheto is best known for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano – this is the heart of the estate, and the passion of Michele Manelli's life. But Salcheto's vineyards are spread across three different sites: Poggio Piglia near Chiusi, Greppo in Abbadia di Montepulciano and Casa Lucii near San Gimignano – all within the Chianti DOCG. The Biskero grapes come from this extensive network, and the wine embodies the diversity of its origins with dignity. The name itself says it all. "Biskero" is a word from the Tuscan dialect, a blend of a twinkle in the eye and self-deprecating humour – someone who approaches things with a light-hearted attitude and in their own unique way. For a winery that, in 2011, was the first in the world to certify the carbon footprint of a bottle of wine, operates an off-grid cellar and has been officially registered since 2021 as a "Società Benefit" – a company dedicated to the public good – since 2021, that's not a bad self-portrait. Take what is serious lightly. Take what seems light seriously.

Organic and biodynamic, hand-harvested, natural yeasts, no sulphites. 30% is aged for four months inLiters American oakLiters, the rest in steel. The 2024 vintage was no easy one: extreme summer heat forced the vines to slow down their ripening. The result is wines with less body than usual – but with pronounced freshness and balance, which become a real strength in an everyday wine like this.

A brilliant ruby red in the glass. The nose is direct and inviting: raspberry, cherry, herbs, a hint of earth and subtle spice. On the palate, it is fresh and supple, with elegant tannins and the characteristic Sangiovese acidity that makes this wine a must-have at the table.
