Anyone who thinks of Chianti as a classic in a straw basket is not historically wrong – but is wrong when it comes to the reality of one of Italy's most diverse wine denominations. Today, Chianti DOCG covers a huge area in Tuscany that stretches from Florence to Siena and includes seven subzones: Colli Senesi, Colli Fiorentini, Rufina, Montalbano, Montespertoli, Colli Aretini – and the heart, Chianti Classico, which has long had its own DOCG. What remains is a denomination with great geographical breadth that reflects the Tuscan hinterland – and where, if you are serious about it, you can make fascinatingly honest wines, today even without Fiasco Classico.

Salcheto is known above all for its Vino Nobile di Montepulciano – this is where the heart of the company lies, where Michele Manelli's lifeblood lies. But Salcheto's vineyards are situated in three different locations: Poggio Piglia near Chiusi, Greppo in Abbadia di Montepulciano and Casa Lucii near San Gimignano – all within the Chianti DOCG. The Biskero grapes come from this wide network, and the wine bears the breadth of its origins with dignity. The name itself is the programme. "Biskero" is Tuscan dialect, a mixture of tongue-in-cheek and self-irony – someone who takes things light-heartedly and in his own way. For a winery that was the first in the world to certify the carbon footprint of a wine bottle in 2011, operates an off-grid cellar and has officially recognised itself as a "Società Benefit" – as a company that works for the common good – this is not a bad self-portrait. Take lightly what is serious. Taking seriously what seems easy.

85 per cent Sangiovese, plus Canaiolo, Mammolo and a hint of Merlot. Organic and biodynamic, hand-picked, natural yeasts, no sulphite. 30 per cent matured for four months in Liters American oak tonneaux, the rest in steel. The 2024 vintage was not an easy one: extreme summer heat forced the plants to slow down the ripening process. The result is wines with less body than usual – but with pronounced freshness and balance, which become a real strength in an everyday wine like this.

Bright ruby red in the glass. The nose is direct and inviting: raspberry, cherry, herbs, a hint of earth and subtle spice. Fresh and supple on the palate, with elegant tannins and the typical Sangiovese acidity that makes this wine indispensable at the table.
