Salcheto is not just an organic winery – it is a manifesto. Since 2011, the winery has been completely self-sufficient, detached from the regional electricity grid and powered by photovoltaics, geothermal energy and biomass. Gambero Rosso named Salcheto "Sustainable Winery of the Year" in 2014, and Michele Manelli, who has managed the estate since 1997, is Vice President of Equalitas, the organisation that sets standards for sustainable wine production in Italy. The lightest bottles in the industry, certified CO₂ balances, energy-independent winery – at Salcheto, sustainability is not a claim, but a reality.

The Rosso di Montepulciano comes from the estate's younger vineyards and is the accessible, uncomplicated brother of the great Vino Nobile. The cuvée of 85 per cent Prugnolo Gentile (the local Sangiovese clone), eight per cent Canaiolo and seven per cent Merlot is fermented spontaneously with wild yeasts and matured exclusively in stainless steel – four months in steel, three months in the bottle, finished. No wood, no frills, just pure fruit and freshness.

Rich ruby red colour. The nose exudes intense aromas of blackberries, juicy cherries, plums, violets, undergrowth and fine herbal notes. Lively and grippy on the palate: a subtle acidity structure carries the fruit, the tannins are fine-grained and present, the finish is medium-long with a balsamic freshness.
