There are stories that the volcano itself has written – with fire, time and the inexorable force of geological eras. Feudo di Mezzo is one such story: once a coherent contrada, it was torn in two by Etna's explosive fury and has borne its name ever since, like a reminder of that night when glowing lava flows divided the land and "di Mezzo" – in the centre – a place between two worlds. Giuseppe Russo has created his most complex and ambitious red wine from this dramatic testimony to the terroir. He selected just 0.76 hectares of the very best plot for this extraordinary wine, where hundred-year-old Nerello Mascalese vines sink their gnarled trunks into the volcanic earth like sculptures. Here, at an altitude of 670 metres in Castiglione di Sicilia, the unique microclimate that prompted the ancient Greeks to plant their first vines here prevails. A terroir so extraordinary that history itself has chosen it as a wine-growing region.
Feudo di Mezzo 2022 shines in deep ruby red with garnet reflections and opens with a bouquet of extraordinary complexity: black cherries and wild berries combine with notes of dark chocolate, Mediterranean herbs and that characteristic smoky minerality that only the split soils of this unique contrada can produce. Hints of rosemary, thyme and crushed tobacco leaves tell the story of a terroir that has been moulded by volcanic force and refined by time. On the palate, a wine of monumental structure and silky elegance unfolds at the same time – powerful enough to carry the intensity of its century-old vines, yet characterised by the aristocratic finesse that only the best Etna vineyards can produce. Silky tannins envelop layers of dark fruit, spicy balsamic notes and a salty minerality that lingers for minutes, reflecting the geological dramaturgy of this extraordinary contrada. SUPERIORE.DE
"Pomegranate with violets, light body, crisp palate, juicy acidity and a balanced finish. A wine that emphasises freshness and goes very well with food." James Suckling
"This is one of the estate's best wines, characterised by a unique persistence and proven ageing potential. These 3,000 bottles show a beautiful elegance with blue flowers, redcurrants and bright ash sensations. This medium-bodied wine finishes with fine tannins and a hint of salinity." Wine Advocate
"The 2022 Etna Rosso Feudo di Mezzo reveals itself in the glass with dark, floral and rich notes of black cherry, chestnut, clove and sage, accompanied by a hint of crushed stone. It also impresses with its supple character and depth of ripe wild berries balanced by a hint of salty minerality. The 2022 rejuvenates with soft tannins and a rosy finish that lingers, yet is powerful and intense. The Feudo di Mezzo offers a great deal of pleasure." Vinous
