“Barbazzale” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Barbazzale Rosso presents itself in dark purple and is a beautifully primary-fruity and solid Nerello from Cottanera. On the palate, it convinces with complex aromas of black berries and mocha. Full, harmonious and ducely fruity, with beautiful tannin, then an interesting fine bitter note in the long fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"Some nice red-fruit character, but there's a rather simple feel to this. Medium body, lightly firm tannins and a clean finish." James Suckling

Etna Rosato DOC 2020
Fresh rosato that smells of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness, a fine mineral note and last but not least a winning drinkability. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Etna Rosato is incredibly pretty with its bouquet of dusty dried flowers, peaches and white smoke. Its silky textures give way to a more tactile and almost crunchy display of pit fruits and minerals, yet it's all under an air of honeyed florals. There's a lovely salinity that lingers long, while residual acids keep the mouth watering for more." Vinous
"Loads of mineral character to this, from hot tile to chalk, together with notes of sour cherries and even a hint of damson. Medium-bodied with the same complex character to the lingering flavors. Well-balanced, serious rosé, made from nerello mascalese grapes." James Suckling

“Erse” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Sweet cherries, flowers, spices and a hint of mint on the nose. Firm yet harmonious tannin in the lively, very intense flavour, which never feels heavy but elegant until the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle aromas suggesting scorched earth, hazelnut and hay form the nose along with a whiff of eucalyptus. The lithe, bone-dry palate offers mineral-driven restraint, showing flinty mineral, toasted almond, pomegranate and a hint of citrus." Wine Enthusiast
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Erse has a lot of spice on its lively bouquet with cumin seed, white pepper and a touch of dried ginger. These lifted aromas frame a core of wild berry fruit. It is a mid-weight, very drinkable and enjoyable wine, especially in the near-term with a Chinese takeout of beef and broccoli." Robert Parker

“Alta Mora” Rosso Etna DOC 2018
Bright, lightening garnet, very clear bouquet with emphatically fresh fruit notes of berries and rhubarb, elegant on the palate with well-dosed power, smooth tannin; juicy, persistent and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2018 Etna Rosso impresses with masses of black cherry and balsam herbs complemented by a whiff of fresh mint. It’s round yet juicy in feel, focused on purity of fruit, with tart berries cascading across its mineral core and lovely inner rose tones that build toward the close. This tapers off a bit short yet fresh, leaving a subtle tug of tannin and a bitter hint behind. The 2018 vintage was challenging on Etna, yet Alta Mora managed to cull an impressive entry-level Rosso from it in spite of that." Vinous
"Frank and attractive red-cherry, cranberry and floral aromas, plus a sleek and vivid palate make this a classic Etna red. Very good balance at the clean, mineral finish." James Suckling

Sweet cherries, flowers, spices and a hint of mint on the nose. Firm yet harmonious tannin in the lively, very intense flavour, which never feels heavy but elegant until the final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 Etna Rosso Erse keeps me coming back to the glass to take in its lively and spicy bouquet, as sour cherries are complemented by dried roses, cloves and hints of fresh mint. This is round and juicy in feel, yet focused on purity, with mineral-tinged red berries that saturate, just as brisk acidity maintains fantastic freshness. A subtle coating of fine tannins and a salty flourish define the finale, as the 2020 tapers off gently grippy under an air of red inner florals. This is an excellent “entry-level” Etna Rosso." Vinous

“Ghiaia Nera” Rosso Etna DOC 2018
Ghiaia, a single varietal Nerello Mascalese from the slopes of Etna, exudes sweet aromas of cherries and flowers. A refined, very detailed and seductive wine with great charm, character and personality. SUPERIORE.DE
"Packaged with a bright red label, the Tenuta Tascante 2018 Etna Rosso Ghiaia Nera offers an accurate portrayal of the native Sicilian grape, Nerello Mascalese. The wine pours forth to a medium ruby color and a lean consistency from a cool and humid vintage. The bouquet offers delicate berry aromas with bitter almond and even a touch of fried cannoli pastry crust. The wine is streamlined but persistent. Serve it with mini veggie pizzette for lunch." Etna Rosato DOC 2019
Delicate old pink with shimmering reflections, elegant bouquet with notes of wild strawberries and light currants, plus restrained, spicy tones. On the palate with creamy freshness and lively acidity, fine and distinguished. SUPERIORE.DE
"Tangy and delicious, this bright rosato has delicate scents evoking yellow spring flowers, wild red berries and crushed Mediterranean herbs. The savory, bone-dry palate delivers wild strawberry, juicy sour cherry and citrus before a salty finish. Crisp acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast
"Here I'm finding a seductive yet extroverted bouquet of sweet peaches in cream, exotic spice, and roasted almond. On the palate, the 2019 Graci Etna Rosato takes a leaner stance, as soft textures give way to white orchard fruits with subtle hints of savory herbs and minerals. The finish is long and perfumed, also with a tug of tart citrus that makes the mouth water for another sip. This Nerello Mascalese Rosato is a wine of contrasts, which I find quite appealing." Vinous
"The 2019 Etna Rosato is made with Nerello Mascalese that is harvested a bit earlier-in September, as opposed to the traditional October harvest-for more brightness. It opens to a pale pink color reminiscent of a Provençal rosé, yet it also shows the shiny copper hues that are specific to this indigenous Etna grape. The wine is beautifully fine and polished in terms of aromas with subtle little embellishments of wild berry, violet and candied grapefruit. Yet that volcanic mineral side is also nicely developed and is ultimately what ties this wine so faithfully to its very exciting volcanic territory. This could set the table for a nice summer meal of smoked salmon." Robert Parker
"This has such attractive, fresh strawberry and watermelon with a stony, mineral edge. The palate is delivered with bright, fresh acidity and has a very vivid, succulent and lively attitude." James Suckling

“Pietradolce” Rosso Etna DOC 2020
Pietradolce Rosso is reminiscent of an elegant red from Burgundy. Sparkling, intense garnet red. Light, aromatic tones of cherry, cigar tobacco and cedar, medium-bodied and well-proportioned on the palate, tasty fruit, salty, balanced and long. SUPERIORE.DE
"For a young Etna Rosso this is very easy to enjoy, thanks to the ripe red-berry character, delicate earthiness and the full-bodied, silky palate." James Suckling
"With a bouquet of black raspberries in an air of cracked slate, flint, ashen stone and smoke, the 2020 Etna Rosso makes itself known. It’s round and silky, with an initial burst of inner sweetness that’s quickly contrasted by tart wild berries and mineral tones that saturate toward the close. The 2020 keeps the energy high, even as it finishes lightly structured, leaving sour citrus and blackberries to linger. I love the vibrancy and vivid fruit here, but do give this some air to blow off a bit of its youthful reduction." Vinous

“Diciasettesalme” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Brilliant ruby red. Diciasette Salme offers a wonderful bouquet of dark fruit aromas and Cuban cigar tobacco. Balanced, elegant, full-bodied and fresh on the palate. Stylistically and qualitatively very successful. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright, radiant ruby red. In the nose of rich red berries, a hint of flint and delicate toast, then in the reverberation of ripe cherries. Clear and radiant on the palate, with tight, salty tannin, spans a wide arc, with emphasis and extremely delicate tasting." Falstaff
"Still very young, this Etna red has attractive, bright red-berry, wild-herb and candied-orange aromas. The palate has a level of creaminess that's unusual for this appellation, but behind that is a solid tannin structure that powers the moderately dry, mineral finish." James Suckling
"The Cottanera 2019 Etna Rosso Diciassettesalme offers a lean and pure expression of Nerello Mascalese without too many extra bells or whistles. The wine finishes fermentation in oak and continues its evolution in large casks for eight months. There are dusty notes that frame cassis and sour cranberry. But both the fruity and the mineral sides of the wine are well-contained and measured." Robert Parker

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018
In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.
It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Brilliant bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a buoyant elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE
"Light red; reductive, discreetly fruity-foliagey, not intense; delicate attack, fine, depth of fruit, then also power and tannin." Merum
"Sparkling, brightening ruby. Appealing and open nose, opens with notes of raspberry, some blackberry, fine spice in the background. Lots of present tannin on the palate, hearty bite at the core, firm pressure on the final, juicy and salty." Falstaff
"As if you can smell the ashen volcanic soils that these vines grow in, the 2018 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 wafts up smoky and musky, with a complement of cherry and dried strawberry that fully completes the experience. This is soft and fleshy in feel, boasting a noticeable inner sweetness nicely balanced by brisk acids and pretty inner florals." Vinous
"Pretty plum and raspberry fruit flavors are accented by a fine, aromatic thread of dried thyme, smoky mineral and rosehip in this harmonious, light- to medium-bodied red." Wine Spectator
"The 2018 Sicilia Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 is a beautifully elegant and streamlined wine that reflects the precision and careful winemaking that is a hallmark of the Planeta family. This wine opens to fine and nuanced aromas of wild berry, cassis and rose. Etched mineral notes and light spice frame a core of pretty fruit. This is a classic Etna red that can be stretched out to a 10-year drinking window if desired, although there's no reason not to enjoy this bottle straight out of the gate." Robert Parker

“Sul Vulcano” Rosso Etna DOC 2019
Donnafugata's impressive declaration of love for Etna, currently the hottest wine hotspot, began with the Sul Vulcano line.
Bright ruby red, in the bouquet wild strawberry with delicate hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The corresponding fresh taste and a subtle elegance lead into a harmonious and energetic finish. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2019 Etna Rosso Sul Vulcano lifts from the glass with a rich and slightly confectionary bouquet, showing sugar-dusted black cherries, licorice and dried roses. It’s silky-smooth, quite elegant in feel, as ripe red and black fruits wash across the palate, leaving a staining of minerality and subtly grippy tannins in their wake. There’s a hint of custard and balsam herbal tones that linger through the finale, as this tapers off lightly structured and tart. The Etna Rosso Sul Vulcano is primarily Nerello Mascalese with a dollop of Nerello Cappuccio." Vinous
"A sophisticated Etna red with the bright red-fruit and orange-zest aromas that make this appellation stand out in the Sicilian context. Elegant balance of fine tannins and fruit on the medium-bodied palate that shunts up the energy level when the mineral acidity kicks in at the finish." James Suckling

Etna Rosso DOC 2020
This archetype of an Etna Rosso presents itself with a lot of grace and beautiful varietal typicity. Aromas of strawberry and cherry on the nose, a medium-bodied fruit on the palate, slightly salty hints and spicy nuances in the beautiful final. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2020 is the total package when it comes to “entry-level” Etna Rosso. Its bouquet is remarkably pretty, yet also deep and vibrant, with masses of crushed red berries and rose tones excited by a minty freshness. The textures are silky and pliant, matched by medium-bodied weight, delivering a bright mix of ripe strawberries and sweet spices. All the while, a core of juicy acidity maintains marvelous freshness, even as a subtle coating of grippy tannins linger through the well-framed finale. Bravo, Alberto Graci." Vinous

The shooting stars of recent years are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. At the moment they are the "hottest" red wines from Italy. The Sicilians, however, call Etna tender "Mamma Etna", because the black lava soil is very fertile. Here there are ancient vineyards whose planting rights were sold to Tuscany during the boom in the Maremma. In 2001 there were no more than 20 farms. Today there are again more than 140 active around Mount Etna. Many of them with mini estates under 10 hectares.
The love of the lateral beginners made the locals change their minds.
After the success of a few cross-country beginners, the people recalled Etna, which had been neglected until then, and revitalised the ancient steep vineyards. The price of land exploded when one well-known company after another wanted to buy vineyards here. Big names such as Cusumano, Tasca d'Almerita or Planeta have also invested here, because the elegance, mineral spice and clear fruit of Rossi dell'Etna has spread quickly and also the international wine critics' guild considers the wines of Passopisciaro, Pietradolce and Tenute delle Terre Nere every year with high scores.
The elegance of Bourgogne with the finesse of the Langhe.
What do these reds from the slopes of the volcano taste like? Imagine something between a good Burgundy and a Barbaresco. That's Rosso dell'Etna. Nerello Mascalese is the more elegant brother, always in the majority, often to 100%. And Nerello Cappuccio is the somewhat more robust, full-bodied and high-yield little brother, who is allowed to play with max. 10-20%. Most of the vineyards are situated on steep slopes between 500 and 1,000m above sea level. The interplay of cold falling winds from the long snow-covered Etna, which is over 3,300 metres high, and the summer heat, as well as the constant breeze from the east coast only a few kilometres away as the crow flies, create a unique micro-climate that promotes fruit formation in the best possible way. The mostly 60-100 years old vines in Albarello vine culture produce extremely low yields, but mineral, elegant wines with good ripening potential. SUPERIORE.DE
