    • "Barbazzale" Rosso Etna DOC 2019

      “Barbazzale” Rosso Etna DOC 2019

Barbazzale Rosso presents itself in dark purple and is a beautifully primary-fruity and solid Nerello from Cottanera. On the palate, it convinces with complex aromas of black berries and mocha. Full, harmonious and ducely fruity, with beautiful tannin, then an interesting fine bitter note in the long fresh finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2019 Etna Rosso Barbazzale keeps you coming back to the glass with a woodland-inspired display of wild berries, lavender, wet stone and undergrowth. It's soft-textured and fleshy in feel, maintaining balance through a pure display of fresh strawberries laced with sweet spice and florals. Round tannins frame the expression nicely as the Barbazzale tapers off to a dusting of violet candies. This blend of 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio is easy to like, showing quite well today, and it is a fantastic bargain." Vinous

      Etna Rosato DOC 2020

Fresh rosato that smells of dark berries and a hint of lavender. Clear fruit on the palate, with elegant suppleness, a fine mineral note and last but not least a winning drinkability. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2020 Etna Rosato is incredibly pretty with its bouquet of dusty dried flowers, peaches and white smoke. Its silky textures give way to a more tactile and almost crunchy display of pit fruits and minerals, yet it's all under an air of honeyed florals. Bright, bright garnet, very clear bouquet with emphatically fresh fruit notes of berries and rhubarb, elegant on the palate with well-dosed power, smooth tannin; juicy, persistent and long SUPERIORE.DE

"Coconut and hazelnut aromas mingle with ripe, dark-skinned berry aromas. Reflecting the nose, the tight palate offers toast, licorice and blackberry jam alongside tightly knit, drying tannins." Wine Enthusiast

"A compact, minerally version, with tobacco and smoke notes leading to flavors of dried cherry, pomegranate, coffee and spice. Medium-bodied and fresh, with grippy tannins that should integrate well with short cellaring." Wine Spectator

"Luminous red. Aromas of flinty red berries, red cherries and minerals have a bright floral overlay. Then very good inner-mouth perfume too, with exhilarating lift to the red fruit and stony flavors. The finish is long and clean, nicely framed by suave tannins and harmonious acidity." Vinous

"Aromas of lemon, watermelon and black cherries follow through to a medium body, firm, silky tannins and a solid, bright finish. Tighter style to this." James Suckling

"The 2017 Etna Rosso is a terrific entry-level red wine from the Sicilian volcano that boasts the power and electric charge that I associate with wines from this fascinating territory. If you are new to the wines of Etna, this Rosso is a great place to start. This is a well-made and carefully shaped Nerello Mascalese that ushers forth smaller berry fruit, smoke and pencil shavings. The fruit is pure and precise. The wine's overall presentation is sharp and accessible." Robert Parker

On the palate with excellent, silky texture and ripe melon with white stone fruit. Delicate old rose with shimmering reflexes, elegant fragrance with notes of wild strawberries and light currants, in addition to reserved, spicy tones. On the palate with creamy freshness and lively acidity, fine and distinguished. SUPERIORE.DE

"Tangy and delicious, this bright rosato has delicate scents evoking yellow spring flowers, wild red berries and crushed Mediterranean herbs. The savory, bone-dry palate delivers wild strawberry, juicy sour cherry and citrus before a salty finish. Crisp acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast

"Here I’m finding a seductive yet extroverted bouquet of sweet peaches in cream, exotic spice, and roasted almond. On the palate, the 2019 Graci Etna Rosato takes a leaner stance, as soft textures give way to white orchard fruits with subtle hints of savory herbs and minerals. The finish is long and perfumed, also with a tug of tart citrus that makes the mouth water for another sip. This Nerello Mascalese Rosato is a wine of contrasts, which I find quite appealing." Bright garnet red, youthfully fresh wine with a bouquet of strawberry and citrus fruit, in addition stone-mineral tones, flowers and spices. In the taste of subtle elegance with a pleasant fresh breeze. SUPERIORE.DE

"Brightening, brightening ruby. Clear and fresh nose, smells of raspberries and moist tree bark, spicy. Pithy, handy tannin on the palate, shows fine raspberry notes in the middle course, juicy." Falstaff

Donnafugata's impressive declaration of love for the currently hottest wine hotspot Etna began with the Sul Vulcano line.

Bright ruby red, on the nose wild strawberry with delicate hints of cinnamon and nutmeg. The corresponding fresh taste and a subtle elegance lead into a harmonious and energetic finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium red; warm, red-fruited, spicy notes, appealing; round attack, fluid, spicy fruit, long, pleases well." (JLF) Merum

"Aromas of dried cranberries and cherries interlace with crushed oyster shell, iron and volcanic ash. More ash and bitter berries on the palate. It’s medium-bodied with elegant, silky tannins and a complex, savory character." James Suckling

    • "Eruzione 1614" Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018

“Eruzione 1614” Nerello Mascalese Sicilia DOC 2018

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary, as it lasted ten years and is thus to date the longest recorded eruption of the volcano that is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

It could hardly be more autochthonous: this excellent wine from the Nerello Mascalese grape comes from the hotspot on the east coast of Sicily, from the slopes of Mount Etna. Brilliant bright cherry red, fine scent of raspberry and blood orange, gripping, taut acidity, silky tannin and a buoyant elegance with beautiful minerality. Great, long and unique! SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling, brightening ruby. Appealing and open nose, opens with notes of raspberry, some blackberry, fine spice in the background. Lots of present tannin on the palate, hearty bite at the core, firm pressure on the final, juicy and salty." Falstaff

"As if you can smell the ashen volcanic soils that these vines grow in, the 2018 Nerello Mascalese Eruzione 1614 wafts up smoky and musky, with a complement of cherry and dried strawberry that fully completes the experience. This is soft and fleshy in feel, boasting a noticeable inner sweetness nicely balanced by brisk acids and pretty inner florals." Vinous

      Rosso del Soprano IGT 2015

Stirring liveliness, great elegance and an undreamt-of abundance is offered by this almost unknown Sicilian from mainly Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. Freshness and juiciness in the harmonious taste, which merges into an intense and long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Sparkling garnet red. Fine, intense nose with notes of raspberry and plum, open and accessible. Juicy at the base, fine tannins with a good grip." Falstaff

"Aromas of honeysuckle and Granny Smith apple jump out of the glass. The green apple aroma carries on to the racy palate together with lemon zest and yellow peach. A vibrant perlage provides the backdrop." (Editors' Choice) Wine Enthusiast

    • "Erse Contrada Moscamento 1911" Rosso Etna DOC 2017

“Erse Contrada Moscamento 1911” Rosso Etna DOC 2017

Rovittello, like Passiposciaro and Pietramarina, is located on the north and northeast sides of the volcano Etna. In 1911, another eruption took place, which caused, among other things, the area from which Fessina's red of the same name originates to be flooded by lava rock, thus creating a terroir rich in basalt and sand, on which bush vines up to 100 years old grow today. The microclimate of this special site in the form of an amphitheatre ensures that the Nerello grapes ripen slowly and completely, giving the wines a unique identity, elegance and depth.

Bright, brilliant ruby red. Animating bouquet of violet flowers, pink pepper and small red forest berries. On the palate then spicy and velvety, the harmony between acidity and fruit extract combined with round, elegant tannins create a wine of aristocratic grace and finesse, which will increase in depth and complexity in the years to come. Just 3,000 bottles of this wine are sold in selected specialist shops and top restaurants. SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, brightening ruby garnet. Very clear and appealing nose of raspberries and dark cherries, some cotton candy. On the palate juicy and with a lot of tension, unfolds with present, handy tannin, in the final firm pressure, still appears very young. Falstaff

    • Etna Rosso DOC 2018

      Etna Rosso DOC 2018

This archetype of an Etna Rosso presents itself with a lot of grace and beautiful varietal typicity. On the nose, aromas of strawberry and cherry, on the palate a medium-weight fruit, slightly salty hints and spicy nuances in the beautiful final. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2018 Etna Rosso bursts from the glass with sweetly spiced cherries and wild berries nicely contrasted by hints of sage. This is silky and pliant in feel, motivated by juicy acids that further enliven its ripe red and blue fruits. Notes of lavender and purple-tinged inner florals linger long, as the 2018 tapers off to a twang of salty minerality. This zesty and pure Nerello Mascalese is refined completely in concrete. Nicely done." Vinous

    Things to know aboutNerello

The shooting stars of recent years are Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. At the moment they are the "hottest" red wines from Italy. The Sicilians, however, call Etna tender "Mamma Etna", because the black lava soil is very fertile. Here there are ancient vineyards whose planting rights were sold to Tuscany during the boom in the Maremma. In 2001 there were no more than 20 farms. Today there are again more than 140 active around Mount Etna. Many of them with mini estates under 10 hectares.

The love of the lateral beginners made the locals change their minds.

After the success of a few cross-country beginners, the people recalled Etna, which had been neglected until then, and revitalised the ancient steep vineyards. The price of land exploded when one well-known company after another wanted to buy vineyards here. Big names such as Cusumano, Tasca d'Almerita or Planeta have also invested here, because the elegance, mineral spice and clear fruit of Rossi dell'Etna has spread quickly and also the international wine critics' guild considers the wines of Passopisciaro, Pietradolce and Tenute delle Terre Nere every year with high scores.

The elegance of Bourgogne with the finesse of the Langhe.

What do these reds from the slopes of the volcano taste like? Imagine something between a good Burgundy and a Barbaresco. That's Rosso dell'Etna. Nerello Mascalese is the more elegant brother, always in the majority, often to 100%. And Nerello Cappuccio is the somewhat more robust, full-bodied and high-yield little brother, who is allowed to play with max. 10-20%. Most of the vineyards are situated on steep slopes between 500 and 1,000m above sea level. The interplay of cold falling winds from the long snow-covered Etna, which is over 3,300 metres high, and the summer heat, as well as the constant breeze from the east coast only a few kilometres away as the crow flies, create a unique micro-climate that promotes fruit formation in the best possible way. The mostly 60-100 years old vines in Albarello vine culture produce extremely low yields, but mineral, elegant wines with good ripening potential. SUPERIORE.DE
