Marc de Grazia made Etna history when he rediscovered the forgotten volcanic slopes over two decades ago. His Etna Rosso – the estate's 'calling card' – now blends grapes from various vineyards at altitudes between 600 and 900 metres, where Nerello Mascalese grows on ancient volcanic soils. The vines are situated on the cool northern slopes of Mount Etna, surrounded by black pumice and lava rock – a terroir that lends every sip its unmistakable mineral character.

Following spontaneous fermentation, the wine matures for a year in second-use oak, revealing even in its youth what sets it apart: elegant freshness, silky tannins and that typical Burgundian finesse which Robert Parker once compared to Pinot Noir. Ripe cherry, pomegranate and orange zest blend with thyme and floral notes, whilst volcanic minerality pulses in the background. "The Tenuta delle Terre Nere 2024 Etna Rosso contains a hint of Nerello Cappuccio, which is planted amongst the old Nerello Mascalese vines. Marco de Grazia describes the 2024 vintage as a "baroque" vintage: it has everything, but perhaps a little too much. High alcohol content, abundant sugar and ripe tannins required careful maceration and extraction to prevent the wine from seeming excessive. The estate had already faced similarly hot conditions in 2004, its first vintage, as well as in the more tannic 'monster' vintage of 2014. These experiences helped the team to manage phenolic ripeness more precisely in 2024 and to produce tannins that feel silky and supple. This is an outstanding vintage for those who have worked diligently. The wine is bursting with fruit, and its opulent, ripe character is simply beautiful. Around 90% comes from the north-facing slopes, including four hectares in San Lorenzo as well as younger vines in Calderara Sottana and Santo Spirito, whilst 10% from the south-facing slopes adds further opulence.
