    Their credo can be summed up in eight words: "The grape is a gift; the cellar is its guardian." Everything Pian dell'Orino does – and, more importantly, everything it does not do – follows this conviction with absolute consistency. Caroline Pobitzer and Jan Hendrik Erbach arrived in Montalcino in 1999; a German couple who found what they were looking for in the hills to the north of the appellation: twelve hectares, varied soils, a site that was crying out to be farmed biodynamically. Today, Pian dell'Orino ranks among the appellation's quiet benchmark estates, without fanfare and without haste.

    The Rosso comes from three vineyards: Scopeta, Pian dell'Orino and Pian Bassolino. The grapes are selected to the same exacting standards as those for the Brunello. Spontaneous fermentation using the natural yeasts on the grape skins, no additives, no intervention that would distort the wine's origin. Fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place in large wooden vats, without cooling and without the addition of sulphur at this stage. The wine is bottled unfiltered. The 2018 vintage was released late: that speaks for itself. The estate releases its wines only when they are ready.

    The bouquet reveals pronounced notes of fruit and freshness, underpinned by a complex, nuanced character. Lively on the palate with a delicate structure, and a long, clean finish. Sangiovese that truly speaks of its terroir. SUPERIORE.DE
