The Consorzio awarded this vintage five stars in Montalcino – a classic Mediterranean climate in its purest form. A cool start to spring with little rainfall and slightly below-average temperatures nevertheless produced a good fruit set, followed by a rather hot summer with a pronounced day-night temperature range. Light rainfall and falling temperatures in September ultimately ensured perfect ripeness, pleasant freshness and truly fantastic phenolic development.

At Poggio Antico, the Riserva is produced according to a completely different principle to the basic Brunello: it is not the identity of a single vineyard that counts, but the intrinsic potential of the fruit harvested in each vintage – selected only in those years in which certain plots demonstrate exceptional vigour. The grapes come from a south-facing high plateau at 500 metres, rich in gravel and full of stones, and were harvested on 10 and 11 October. Following three days of cold maceration, the wine ferments for three weeks in truncated-cone-shaped steel tanks, followed by a further period of maceration. Ageing takes place in traditional large Slavonian and French oak barrels for 30 months, followed by a further 30 months in the bottle – one of the longest ageing periods in the estate’s entire range. Only 6,000 bottles were produced in 2016.

A deep, rich ruby red. The bouquet offers ripe dark cherry and forest fruits, underpinned by leather, roasted coffee and a hint of aniseed. Velvety and dense on the palate, with finely woven, supportive tannins and a long, spicy finish that highlights the exceptional phenolic ripeness of this vintage. SUPERIORE.DE
