What is in this glass does not come from separate, less highly regarded plots, but exclusively from grapes classified for the Brunello itself – Rosso di Montalcino is an earlier, more immediate expression of the same noble material, not a separate, lesser category. The same transparency and the same tension that characterise the estate's great wines are found here in a sleeker, more direct form.

The vines are situated at an altitude of between 480 and 520 metres – one of the highest sites in the whole of Montalcino – on brooding, clay-rich soil with excellent water-retention capacity. Cordon-spur and Guyot training systems, managed organically and sustainably: green manure to balance nutrients and aerate the soil; pruning tailored to the age, soil, vigor and aspect to minimise stress and extend the vines' lifespan, copper, sulphur and natural antagonists against pathogens, natural manure and plant-based fortifiers. One hundred% Sangiovese, hand-harvested from late September to early October. Fermentation lasts eight days in truncated cone-shaped steel tanks at a maximum of 23°C, followed by a further six days of gentle maceration – without punching down, only with gentle wetting of the cap to homogenise the mass. Ageing takes place in equal parts in steel tanks and large French oak barrels, for twelve months in each.

On the nose, spices, ripe red cherries and a hint of fine leather. On the palate, lively, ripe red fruit and subtle spice, underpinned by that inner density characteristic of grapes worthy of a Brunello, even in this more youthful form. SUPERIORE.DE
