• Chardonnay Sicilia Menfi DOC 2019

      Chardonnay Sicilia Menfi DOC 2019

Planetas Chardonnay exudes a large and rich bouquet with aromas of apricot, apple, lemon, honey and lime. On the palate, these same intense flavours, delicate melting paired with fruity freshness and beautiful length. A Sicilian white wine at the highest level. SUPERIORE.DE

"The sweetly scented 2019 Chardonnay opens up with an alluring bouquet of dusty yellow florals, dried apricot, sage and hints of almond. It boasts oily, glycerol-like textures, lifted by stimulating acids, citrus-tinged orchard fruits and minerals. This is rich and savory with power in reserve, tapering off a bit tropical yet in perfect balance. A salty flourish keeps you coming back to the glass for more." Vinous

    • "Santa Cecilia" Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

“Santa Cecilia” Sicilia Noto DOC 2017

Strong, bright ruby red. This one hundred percent Nero d'Avola is a captivating wine with its rich, fruity-spicy aroma of blackcurrants, cherries, undergrowth, liquorice and dark chocolate. The soft but firm, warm taste of ripe berry fruit, fine spice and the noble tannin inspire us very much. SUPERIORE.DE

"Elegantly shining ruby red. On the nose of blood oranges, rose hips, sealing wax and wild strawberries. Precise, fresh and clear on the palate, spans the tongue with plenty of juice and fruit, balanced on the finish with a slight saltiness." Falstaff

"The 2017 Nero d'Avola Santa Cecilia explodes from the glass with masses of crushed stone, blackberries, cherries, wild herbs and hints of brown sugar. This is silky in texture with depths of sapid dark fruits complemented by sweet spice and pretty violet florals that form toward the close. The power of the warm southern coast comes through as the 2017 traverses richness with a beautiful acid-driven lift. It tapers off long to mineral-tinged wild berries framed by subtle tannins." Vinous

"Plenty of iodine and volcanic ash on the nose with preserved lemon and dried cranberries. It's both juicy and mineral on the palate with a medium body and silky tannins. Distinct ash and olive stones at the finish." James Suckling

    • "Eruzione 1614" Riesling Terre Siciliane IGT 2016

“Eruzione 1614” Riesling Terre Siciliane IGT 2016

In the history of Etna, the eruption of 1614 is legendary because it lasted ten years and is the longest recorded eruption of the volcano, which is still active today. A very impressive and fitting name for Planeta's Etna series of equally impressive wines.

Riesling from Etna? Initially an experiment, admittedly. But it can truly be described as a success: the newest scion of Planeta's Etna family with delicate pale colour with green reflections; in the nose with a great variety of aromas, such as white apple, plum, lemon and yellow flowers. Perfect, dry on the palate, with mild acidity, fine minerality and (especially with increasing maturity) pronounced fruitiness. SUPERIORE.DE

    • "Maroccoli" Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2015 <br>MAGNUM

“Maroccoli” Syrah Sicilia Menfi DOC 2015 · MAGNUM

Fresh, bright ruby. The Syrah convinces with its intense and ripe bouquet with hints of figs, red currants, pickled cherries, blueberries, spices and vanilla. Velvety, noble tannins accompany the opulent and lively structure until the lingering final. SUPERIORE.DE

"The 2015 Syrah Maroccoli makes the case for Syrah grown on the southernmost tip of Sicily. This is dark, brooding and earthy in the glass, with notes of dark chocolate, peppery herbs and hints of tobacco. It leans more toward savory than sweet, as black fruits, exotic spices and minerals settle in. Grippy tannins slowly sneak in and clench the senses with youthful poise. Consider me a fan." Vinous

"The overlay of dried violets, lavender and spices works very well with the more overt vanilla and tar notes. Soft and plummy with ripe tannins and plenty of concentration, but there's a fine line of bright acidity within the texture." James Suckling

"Syrah and Sicily are two peas in a pod, and the 2015 Menfi Syrah Maroccoli affirms this fact with exuberant precision and charm. This wine is packed tight with dark fruit, tobacco, spice, bacon fat and even a touch of bitter chocolate. Both Syrah and Sicily love the sunshine and the summer heat, and luckily, both of these things were delivered with abundance in this happy vintage." Robert Parker

    • "Didacus" Chardonnay Sicilia Menfi DOC 2018

“Didacus” Chardonnay Sicilia Menfi DOC 2018

Didacus is the youngest of the Planeta growth and comes from the first vines planted on the shores of Lake Ulm in 1985. It is dedicated to the founder of the winery, Diego Planeta, and on the one hand represents the history of the winery, on the other hand it stands for elegance, tradition, family and future. At the same time, it embodies Planeta's vision of Sicilian viticulture at the highest level.

This Chardonnay comes from the best grapes of just 4 hectares of Chardonnay, all hand selected, pressed and fermented in barriques. With just 6,996 bottles, this drop is hand-picked and distributed to the best importers and restaurants worldwide.

straw yellow with golden reflections. Fine fragrance of herbs, white pome fruit, lychee and a hint of vanilla. Very complexly built, needs further bottle ageing until it unfolds all its elegance and minerality in a terrific long finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"With a golden hue and a rich bouquet to match, the 2018 Chardonnay Didacus presents aromas of hazelnut and crushed almond before blossoming further with layers of sweet peach, young mango and honeysuckle. It's silky in texture and lifted in feel, balancing ripe nectarine, apple and an inner air of custard against cooling acids and pretty inner florals. From its bouquet, you might expect a beast; instead, what you find is a beauty, as the Didacus Chardonnay tapers off clean and refined with hints of tropical citrus and a subtle tug of framing tannins. You might not think to look to Sicily for world-class Chardonnay, but in this case, you'd be missing out." Vinous

"The Planeta 2018 Sicilia Menfi Chardonnay Didacus is a crowning achievement for a landmark Sicilian winery that has already proved its mettle with a long and illustrious library collection of Chardonnay, Fiano and Carricante-based whites, among others. All the knowledge and experience amassed over the decades has resulted in this latest project, Didacus, dedicated to the family patriarch Diego Planeta who sadly left us last year. This stunning wine certainly puts Planeta in the running for one of the best Chardonnays made in Italy. It is tirelessly creamy and rich, with an abundant bouquet expressed with apricot, honey, star jasmine, crushed rock and sweet Sicilian almond. From a cool vintage, the aromas are fine and pinpoint in their intensity, unfolding like a long story told chapter by chapter. The big takeaway here is the Mediterranean, purely Sicilian character of this wine. It is generous, embracing, noble and strong. I enthusiastically recommend this bottle to lovers of age-worthy Chardonnay." Robert Parker

    • "Didacus" Cabernet Franc Sicilia Menfi DOC 2016

“Didacus” Cabernet Franc Sicilia Menfi DOC 2016

The first vintage of the red counterpart to the Didacus Chardonnay impressively reflects the vision of the Planeta family: elegance and tradition, family and future. This 100% Cabernet Franc comes from vines over 20 years old that were still planted by Diego Planeta, and it is simply stunning, delicious and unforgettable. Superb aromas of sensual dark fruits, some leather and tobacco. Explosive, penetrating and powerful on the palate, but at the same time seamless and silky smooth. The tannin management is excellent. This is a wine to keep in the cellar - assuming some self-control. SUPERIORE.DE

"From a classic vintage and a long growing season, this Cabernet Franc is slow to open and reveals a long range of aromas to coincide with various intervals one hour after the bottle is open, six hours later and even two days later. Give it time. Didacus reveals textbook varietal purity with dark fruit, bramble, white pepper, crushed stone and rosemary essence. There is little sweetness to the fruit, and the wine's personality embraces a more tonic or focused style with inner tension and verve. It focuses on length, not textural width. Compared to the Chardonnay, which is full-on Mediterranean with a kaleidoscope of bold fruit intensity, this wine is more reserved and timid. It adopts the silent, noble and insular side of the Sicilian persona and is a wine that succinctly relays its intention and uses few words to do so." Robert Parker

"The finest dark chocolate, roses, cedar, sage, dried red currants, spiced orange peel; you can go on and on with a new note each time you tilt the glass as the 2016 Cabernet Franc Didacus slowly blossoms. Its textures are like weighted velvet, yet the expression is medium-bodied in feel, with a polished display of black fruits lifted by vibrant acids as hints of white pepper give way to dark inner florals. This is still youthfully dense, leaving a fine coating of tannin under a savory display of dried plums and blackberries. There's a sheen to the 2016 that allows for an early peek into its evolution today, yet the cellar potential is remarkably high as well." Vinous
