Although the family coat of arms indicates a long history as notaries, the Bisol family also has a deep-rooted tradition in viticulture around Valdobbiadene. Old tax documents prove that it has been cultivating vineyards in the heart of the Prosecco zone since 1542. Today the company Ruggeri, founded by Giustino Bisol in 1950 in the municipality of Santo Stefano, is run by his son Paolo. Today it is one of the most internationally renowned sparkling wine producers in Veneto. In his work the winegrower, who has very good knowledge and decades of experience, is supported by his children Isabella and Giustino.
In 1993, the winery moved to Valdobbiadene, where it moved into new, large premises designed according to ergonomic principles. Up to 30,000 tons of grapes per harvest can be processed there fresh and without delay. When in 2010 the area between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, supplemented by Cartizze, was declared a DOCG area, this was the start of another stage in the company's quality offensive, despite the economic crisis that still prevailed at that time.
Ruggeri itself has a small vineyard in the Cartizze area and larger vineyards near Montello, most of which are planted with Pinot Grigio and Glera. About one hectare of the cultivated area is reserved for the rare native red variety Recantina. The grape harvest begins very early, often even in the first half of September. The soils consist mainly of limestone, clay and sandstone. In addition to a perfect and well organised cellar technique, the strength of Ruggeri lies in its long-standing close and trusting relationship with more than a hundred top winemakers from the areas around Valdobbiadene and Cartizze. The suppliers have the best historical locations in San Stefano, Santo Pietro and Saccol. The enormous quantities of grapes, which arrive at the estate within a short time at harvest time, are gently processed in pneumatic presses. With around one million bottles per year, Ruggeri's production has remained at a constant level for a long time.
Paolo Ruggeri led the Venetian wine house to its present bloom. At work, the winemaker relies almost without exception on the great potential of the Prosecco grape. In the old local vines and autochthonous clones as well as in the steep, traditional terraces around Valdobbiadene, the winemaker sees a regional legacy that he absolutely wants to preserve.
