About the winemakersTenuta dei Pianali | AntinoriTuscany | Bolgheri

"When I was offered this vineyard, I could not resist"smiles Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the youngest of the three Antinori heirs, who first emigrated to the USA, then made a name for himself in Asia as a photojournalist and finally returned to Italy in the 1980s and became famous with Ornellaia.

With the Tenuta dei Pianali, the estate owner Lodovico Antinori added another outstanding winery to his empire. Only one wine is made from the grapes of the 32-hectare Bolgheri Rosso Coronato. The Swedish cellar master Helena Lindberg and the star oenologist Michel Rolland from Bordeaux have given him all their attention and experience. The vines thrive on well-balanced loamy and sandy soils, which here in the Alta Maremma, as these northern areas of the Bolgheri DOC are also called, are traversed by tongues of former lava flows. The vineyards are situated on a plateau that slopes gently towards the sea. Just under a hundred metres above sea level, the constant sea breeze ensures a balanced microclimate, good ventilation and optimum ripening conditions.

As usual here, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot dominate, supplemented by a small percentage of Petit Verdot. The original cement tanks in the small winery, first mentioned in 1910, were renovated and supplemented with modern temperature control technology. The barrel cellar is in the farmhouse next door, here the wines mature 12 months in traditional new and biennial (50% each) barriques.
