Felsina's entry-level wine made from 100% Sangiovese from the border between Chianti Classico and the Colli Senesi. The vineyard, acquired by Domenico Poggiali in 1966, is located in Castelnuovo Berardenga on diverse soils of sandstone, marl and limestone. After temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel, the wine matures for twelve months in medium-sized Slovenian oak barrels. Ruby red in colour with violet hues in the glass. Fruity aromas of wild berries and berry bush on the nose, complemented by pleasant spicy notes. Round and supple on the palate with well-structured tannins and a delicate final of red fruit and vanilla. A classic Chianti from the Colli Senesi, perfect for everyday enjoyment with meat dishes. Tenuta Il Palagio is located in the hills south of Florence, where Sting and Trudie Styler have been cultivating a 350-hectare estate dating back to the 16th century biodynamically since 1997. The Vermentino comes from eleven hectares of vineyards on the calcareous soils of the Chianti Colli Fiorentini – vinified under the aegis of Riccardo Cotarella. The grapes are harvested by hand at the end of September and fermented in stainless steel at low temperatures to preserve freshness and primary fruit.

Borrigiano – named after the inhabitants of the medieval village of Il Borro – marks a special chapter in the history of the Ferragamo family. As the estate's first wine under the prestigious Valdarno di Sopra DOC, it combines the tradition of an appellation that was recognised as one of the first four Tuscan wine regions by Cosimo III de' Medici back in 1716. This elegant cuvée of 70% Sangiovese and 30% Cabernet Sauvignon comes from organically cultivated vineyards between 300 and 500 metres above sea level in the Valdarno Valley. The unique soil composition – characterised by sandstone, clay and fossilised marine deposits from a prehistoric lake – gives the wine its characteristic minerality. Ten months of ageing in large wooden barrels preserves the lively fruit and creates a harmonious interplay between tradition and innovation.

The name tells of ancient craftsmanship: "Gerla" was the name the winegrowers gave to the conical baskets they carried on their backs during the harvest. In 1976, Sergio Rossi acquired the estate from Tedina Biondi-Santi – together with her family's legendary Sangiovese clones. Today, La Gerla is the only family-run winery in Montalcino that still works with this historic heritage. Poggio gli Angeli comes from young vines in Castelnuovo dell'Abate, the warm south of the appellation, vinified with the same care as the Brunelli of the house, only matured for a shorter time: four months in large Slavonian barrels preserve the impetuous fruit.

The name is self-explanatory: Ansonica + Morisfarms = AMOR. A play on words that is also a commitment. Since 2019, Morisfarms has dedicated its own wine to this old coastal variety – proving that the Tuscan Maremma is not just red wine country. Ansonica grows on the Poggetti estate in Massa Marittima, seven kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, on clay-rich, slightly acidic soils of the Colline Metallifere. South-west exposure, hot days, cool nights, sea breeze. Harvest is in mid-October – late, typical of this variety, which takes its time. The must is processed under dry ice protection, fermented in steel at 18 degrees and left on the fine lees for 45 days.

Fuori Misura – beyond all standards. The name is not coquetry. It is a description. This rosato is not made like other rosés. It is not a by-product, not a separate decision. It is a saignée – a bloodletting – from the same mash vats in which the Chianti Classico, the Riserva Le Baròncole and the Percarlo are produced at the same time. The must is drawn off 12 to 24 hours after maceration. To this is added 10% freshly pressed grapes, which are left to macerate for up to 12 days. Sangiovese, Canaiolo – the souls of the house in a different light.

The grapes for this special blend of Alicante Nero, Sangiovese, Carignano, Mourvèdre and Alicante Bouschet come from the organically farmed vineyards near Roccatederighi. Here, just a few kilometres from the Tyrrhenian Sea, the vines thrive on the characteristic Galestro and Alberese soils of the Maremma at an altitude of 200-400 metres. The name is a dedication. Maria Iris Bertarelli – co-founder and soul of Collemassari – is the woman who, together with her brother Claudio Tipa, acquired the abandoned castle in Montecucco in 1998 and planted it with a vision: that this forgotten hilly landscape between Montalcino and Scansano has what it takes to become its own appellation. Irisse is their wine. Vermentino with up to 25% Grechetto – more body, more substance. But what really sets Irisse apart from Melacce: short maceration on the skins, then twelve months of ageing in large oak barrels. This results in a depth that is rarely expected from Vermentino.

Maremma is red wine country. Morellino di Scansano, Saffredi, great Sangiovese and Cabernet – these are the images that characterise this coastal region of southern Tuscany. Elisabetta Geppetti, who has been an ambassador for this region for decades, dared to do something different in 1997: a white wine that works with Nordic varieties – sauvignon Blanc, Petit Manseng, Traminer, Semillon – and planted them in the south. The result is called Poggio Argentato, a white wine with – as Geppetti himself calls it – "French accent and Tuscan soul". The grapes come from two vineyards: Pian di Fiora near Pereta on tufaceous, alabaster-rich soil with south-east exposure and San Vittorio near Scansano on clayey silt with quartz and magmatic rock, open to the sea breezes to the north-east. 200 to 250 metres above sea level, 6,500 vines per hectare. The Sauvignon Blanc matures exclusively in steel. The other varieties spend a short time in secondary tonneau. Five months on the fine lees – for texture and depth without the impression of wood.

Suvereto, south of Bolgheri – where the Tuscan Maremma lies between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the metalliferous hills of the Colline Metallifere, the Frascolla family continues the legacy of Rita Tua and Virgilio Bisti. They began in 1984 with a modest ten hectares, and today Tua Rita is one of the most respected addresses in the region. The Palazzetto epitomises the philosophy of the house, even in the entry-level segment: top quality without pretence. Sangiovese forms the backbone of this cuvée, with Cabernet Sauvignon providing structure and small proportions of Merlot and Syrah. The grapes come from various plots on the estate and are vinified according to organic principles. The red message in a bottle from Tuscany conveys a different message: that modern Tuscan red wine can combine tradition and cosmopolitanism. 70% Sangiovese forms the basis, supplemented by 15% each of Syrah and Merlot – a cuvée in the spirit of the Super Tuscans, but without their price ambitions. The grapes are harvested by hand, fermented for seven to eight days at a controlled temperature and matured for twelve months in French barriques.

In the heart of Bolgheri, where Marilisa Allegrini and her late brother Walter realised their Tuscan dream in 2001, an old tradition is being revived. Cassiopea bears the name of the constellation that shines brightly over the 70-hectare estate of Poggio al Tesoro - a cosmic W for Walter or M for Marilisa, depending on the angle of view in the night sky of the Costa Toscana. This elegant Rosato comes from the prestigious Le Sondraie vineyard, which was once leased to Ornellaia and now forms the centrepiece of the Allegrini vision. The "soprastrada" vineyard, located to the east of the famous Strada Bolgherese, is considered the most valuable area of Bolgheri in terms of quality. Here, where the Seggio stream has transported minerals from the nearby hills for centuries, complex soils of sand, clay and pebbles with a high magnesium content create ideal conditions for both grape varieties.

The Maremma was Etruscan country before it became wine country – and on the hill of Gavorrano, where the cellar building designed by Renzo Piano is cut into the landscape, excavations have brought to light wine remains from a past almost three thousand years old. What began back then, Rocca di Frassinello continues today: as a joint venture between Castellare di Castellina and the Domaines Barons de Rothschild-Lafite, with the aim of uniting the best of two wine worlds on a single estate. The Vermentino grows at an altitude of 90 metres in a natural wind tunnel along the old Via Aurelia – a constant sea breeze blows over the hills from the coast near Castiglione della Pescaia, keeping humidity and heat at bay. Vinification in steel tanks, six months maturation on the lees.

The name "The Whale" refers to the Tyrrhenian Sea, which can be seen from the hills of Suvereto and whose breeze sweeps daily over the San Lorenzo vineyard in the single vineyard of the same name. What is produced here carries this sea within it. 50% Vermentino, 50% Viognier – a meeting of two Mediterranean characters on loamy-sandy, slightly chalky soil, 18-year-old vines, Guyot. Three months on the fine lees. What ends up in the bottle is one of those white wines that you don't analyse, but simply drink.
