Moscato d’Asti DOCG 2025
When people say "Novello", they mean "Barolo". The Cogno family cultivates around 15 hectares here, 9.5 of which are in the Ravera vineyard, and the fact that there is also one hectare of Moscato at an altitude of 400 metres is one of the estate's charming quirks. The vineyard is called Primo Bacio; with 4,000 vines per hectare trained on wires on sandy soil, the grapes are harvested in September. Gentle pressing, clarification and cool fermentation at 15 degrees using selected yeasts, without malolactic fermentation, result in a wine with an alcohol content of just 5.5% by volume.

This plot is situated in Elvio Cogno's traditional wine-growing heartland and epitomises local provenance and authenticity. In the glass, Vigna del Mandorlo displays a vibrant ruby red colour. The expressive bouquet ranges from juicy cherry and blackberry to fresh, spicy notes. The combination of freshness, a soft texture and a delicate hint of almond on the finish lends the wine its harmonious elegance and drinking pleasure. Barbera d’Alba DOC 2023
The Barbera vines for this wine are rooted in plots around Novello, partly in the renowned Ravera zone, on calcareous and clayey marl soils with good water retention. Deep ruby red in colour with a violet rim. The bouquet opens with ripe cherry, plum and blackcurrant, underpinned by violets, delicate herbal spice and a hint of liquorice. Full-bodied and harmonious on the palate, carried by juicy fruit and lively acidity that counteracts the warmth of the vintage with freshness. The tannins are soft but present and give the wine contour. Ageing for 12 months in large, used wooden barrels and a short period of maturation in the bottle round off the profile: a beautiful Barbera with a balance between fruitiness and elegance that is a true reflection of its origins. Montegrilli is a declaration of love for the Langhe terroir and a deliberate departure from the estate's Barolo style: there are no woody notes; instead, the focus here is on the pure essence of Nebbiolo. They ripen on sandy, limestone-rich soil beneath the sun on the south-facing slopes, in a microcosm that ensures immediate, elegant freshness. ![Barolo "Cascina Nuova" DOCG 2022]()
Barolo “Cascina Nuova” DOCG 2022
Elvio Cogno produced his first vintage in 1964 from the Brunate vineyard near Marcarini, initially on a voluntary basis and later as a partner in the estate; the wine is still regarded as legendary in Barolo to this day. In 1990, he fulfilled his own dream and bought an estate in Novello, in the heart of Ravera. The manor house, which gives the wine its name, also serves as the estate's headquarters. Cogno died in 2016; his daughter Nadia and son-in-law Valter Fissore have taken over the business, and with 9.5 hectares, the estate is one of the most significant producers in the area. Three hectares of Nebbiolo grow here on calcareous clay, at an altitude of 380 metres and on a south-facing slope; the vines are 23 years old on average. Fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks using wild yeasts; the wine is then left on the skins for 30 days with the cap submerged, matures for 24 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and spends a further six months in the bottle.

A rare and very limited-production wine that is more than just a Barbera: it is a living monument. The vines come from a tiny plot in the hamlet of Berri near La Morra, which was planted before the phylloxera epidemic (prefilossera) and survived it – ungrafted, without rootstock, a rare treasure that is now almost unique in Italy. Barolo Ravera “Vigna Elena” Riserva DOCG 2018
Barolo Ravera Vigna Elena Riserva DOCG 2018 is a monument to precision craftsmanship and at the same time a rare one-off: it comes from a pure planting of the historic Nebbiolo variety Nebbiolo Rosé – an independent, genetically distinct variety that almost disappeared from the Barolo vineyards over the course of the 20th century. Elvio Cogno and his family have consciously preserved this rare grape variety in the Vigna Elena monopoly position. The parcel is located in the upper Ravera zone near Novello, on poor, calcareous and clayey soils with optimal south-west exposure. The result is low yields, late-ripening grapes and a distinctive style: lighter colour, beguiling floral depth, fine, almost silky tannins and enormous aromatic precision.

Barolo Ravera “Vigna Elena” Riserva DOCG 2020
After decades at Marcarini, Elvio Cogno bought his own estate in Novello in 1990, in the heart of Ravera. A year later, the family planted a new vineyard, and in the same year he became a grandfather. The vines were named after the little girl: Elena, daughter of Nadia and Valter Fissore. To this day, the label features a chick that Elena drew herself when she was three years old. It would be hard to fit any more of her personal touch onto a bottle. Only the Nebbiolo clone "Rosé" was planted, chosen for its vibrant garnet-red colour and intense floral aromas.

The beautiful Azienda Agricola Elvio Cogno is located in Novello, away from the famous wine routes of the Langhe, on a hill above the marvellous Ravera vineyards. The village is one of the eleven municipalities in which Barolo is produced. In the family business run by Valter Fissore and Nadia Cogno in the fourth generation with a sure hand and great passion, elegant and balanced wines in the classic style are produced in a former granary with the sparing use of technology.
The guarantee for success? Discipline.
In recent years, the wines from the winery founded by Nadia's father Elvio have developed a strong identity. The estate, which served as a manor house in the 18th century, stands for rigour and precision. Both characteristics are reflected in the ten wines produced. The finest Barolo single-vineyard wines, followed by Barbera d'Alba, dominate. The winery's products are regularly awarded high ratings by relevant critics.
Focus on indigenous grape varieties
Nebbiolo, Barbera, Dolcetto and Nascetta are the autochthonous grape varieties consistently cultivated in the vineyards. A few years ago, the estate even revived the historic white variety Anas-Cëtta, which was cultivated in the Novello region. It produces wines of a brilliant straw-yellow colour with golden reflections. The dynamic couple deliberately keeps the yields per hectare low and always endeavours to ensure the organic balance of the vines in order to promote sustainable viticulture.
Novello's best Barolo vineyards
The Barolo vineyards of the estate are all located in the renowned MGA Ravera of Novello, one of the coolest and structurally strongest zones of the appellation. Cascina Nuova opens the programme at the foot of the slopes: Younger vineyards on calcareous and clayey soils produce a fresh, accessible Barolo with clear fruit. The classic Barolo Ravera comes from a carefully selected blend of different parcels from this cru and embodies the archetypal expression of Novello with its balance of structure, depth and elegance. Further up, on a steeper slope, lies the historic Bricco Pernice parcel, whose broodingmarl soils and south-easterly exposure produce powerful, long-lasting wines with a distinctive flavour. Finally, the centrepiece and crown jewel is Vigna Elena at an altitude of around 380 metres – a monopoly position exclusively planted with Nebbiolo Rosé, which gives it a unique stylistic signature. The finest, delicate Baroli are produced here, which are characterised by incomparable aromatic precision and elegance despite their great ageing potential.
Always worth a trip
For those interested in wine, a visit to Elvio Cogno is a real recommendation. The winery opens its doors for guided wine tastings in an authentic setting, where you can savour the terroir of the Langhe. Visitors have the opportunity to take a look at the historic corridors of the wine cellar, the current vintages in the tasting room and, if necessary, the vineyards. The experience of a well-guided dialogue with the dedicated hosts about the style and signature of the wines is particularly exciting. An all-round lively approach to the philosophy and care of this family-run top winery in the Langhe region. SUPERIORE.DE
