After decades at Marcarini, Elvio Cogno bought his own estate in Novello in 1990, in the heart of Ravera. A year later, the family planted a new vineyard, and in the same year he became a grandfather. The vines were named after the little girl: Elena, daughter of Nadia and Valter Fissore. To this day, the label features a chick that Elena drew herself when she was three years old. It would be hard to fit any more of her personal touch onto a bottle. Only the Nebbiolo clone "Rosé" was planted, chosen for its vibrant garnet-red colour and intense floral aromas.
Around one hectare is situated on calcareous clay, at an altitude of 380 metres and sloping towards the south-east, with 4,000 vines per hectare, in a vineyard where the estate, with its 9.5 hectares, is one of the leading growers. Wild yeasts initiate fermentation in steel tanks, after which the wine remains on the skins for 30 days with the cap submerged. This is followed by 36 months in large Slavonian oak barrels and a further 18 months in the bottle – a total of four and a half years in the cellar – before the Riserva leaves the estate.
Redcurrant and rose petals, accompanied by spicy, balsamic notes. On the palate, it displays great elegance and precision, with a fine texture and a long, lingering final. A Riserva that prioritises finesse over body and, despite the chick on the label, is by no means lacking in maturity. SUPERIORE.DE
"Subtle and elegant, with notes of cedar, pepper, fresh violets and redcurrants, as well as candied rhubarb. It has an almost timeless flavour. Full-bodied, meaty and firm on the palate with a savoury character, lively acidity and firm, youthful yet fine-grained tannins. A concentrated finish. Ready to drink now, but best from 2028." James Suckling
"This wine doesn't simply enter the room; it dances – whirling and floating through notes of rose petals, bright red cherries, delicate herbs and savoury spices, with an invigoratingly beautiful energy that only the rare and exceptional Nebbiolo rosé clone can convey. Produced exclusively in the finest vintages from a single, irreplaceable hectare in Ravera, this is a Barolo for purists – uncompromising and utterly honest, with tannins that glide rather than grip, and a finish that lingers with radiant and unforgettable grace. Drinking window: Now – 2050." Wine Enthusiast
"An initial spiciness of fresh mint and sage progresses to tobacco, before a flood of heady strawberry blossoms breezes in. Demonstrating density with impossible lightness, the palate is fluid and sensual. It expands with raspberry, pressed rose and sapid minerals. Long, silky tannins weave seamlessly throughout. Finishes with blood orange juiciness. As tempting as it might be to open soon, patience will be highly rewarded." Decanter
