• Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Rose blossoms, mint, cinnamon, dark sweet cherries and smoke lift themselves out of the glass in a translucent, wiry Brunello that builds on energy, power and opulence. The 2015 edition is particularly precise and nuanced. Length and fruit are in the foreground here, and together with a clearly defined tannin structure, the team around Leopoldo Franceschi has created a real masterpiece here, which will only really reveal itself in the coming years. As in every good vintage, it is one of our favourites, and its outstanding value is also great fun! SUPERIORE.DE

"Firm, almost astringent, deep and complex, slightly cedar and tobacco scent of ripe red and a little black berries with a little tar, coffee and cocoa. Very firm, juicy, ripe fruit with a certain acid bite and present, youthful, yet fine and ripe tannins, delicately roasted and hinted bacon on the palate, spicy and dried vegetable to tobacco notes, again a hint of tar, persistent on the palate, has substance and depth, salty minerality, cedar notes, multi-layered, very good, extremely firm, concentrated finish with tart juice, salt and spice. Great." Wein-Plus

"Bright, intense ruby grenade. Reveals itself with a seductive nose of blackberry, cherry and plum, with a hint of leather and cloves. Shows good tension on the palate, handy tannin in many layers, lots of juicy fruit, long finish." Falstaff

"Tasted blind. Lustrous mid ruby. Lots of concentrated, sweet fruit on the nose. Fantastic chewy tannins and energetic, juicy fruit deliver tactile fireworks on the palate." Jancis Robinson

"In 2015, the Brunello was crafted only from their highest vineyards, up to 400 metres. True to its balmy southern origins, it demonstrates immense concentration and ripeness, yet it remains balanced in its considerable proportions. Luxuriously textured fruit is firmly girdled by powerful, chewy tannins and there is no sacrifice of flavour either - iodine, earth, leather, sweet tobacco and dried thyme are woven throughout. The sapid finish lingers leisurely." Decanter

"Wild herb and Mediterranean (i)macchia(n) notes mark this expressive red. Though well-endowed with tannins, this is on the sleek side, showing vibrant acidity. Cherry, strawberry, floral and tobacco flavors join the party as this cruises to a long finish. Best from 2023 through 2042." Wine Spectator

"So many sour cherries rise up from the glass, along with orange rind and lemon peel. The full-bodied palate has a very serious and concentrated core of florals and fruit, and the tannins have an iron-fisted, strapping build. Long, chewy and structured. One of the best in years from here. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

"The Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows a darker and more concentrated appearance than many of its peers. The wine is beautifully abundant and fragrant in the most exuberant and expressive manner. You will recognize aromas of moist soil, tobacco and smoke. Candied cherry hovers over the entire bouquet. Fruit is sourced from older vines (all over 25 years old). Il Poggione occupies a special spot within the Montalcino appellation, and the area always produces slightly more concentrated and powerful wines. I find that to be particularly true in this gorgeous 2015 vintage. I am also very attracted to that almost dusty note of crushed mineral that rides long on the full-bodied finish. Il Poggione's Brunello is also distinguished by firm, youthful tannin that need a few more years to unwind." Robert Parker

"Il Poggione 2015 Brunello di Montalcino offers up a dark, earthy, almost animal-like expression, showing black soil and undergrowth, giving way to crushed black cherry, dusty spice, and dried florals which lift the experience. On the palate, soft, fleshy textures usher in fresh cherry and strawberry, as brisk acids add energy, with savory herbs and minerals saturating, as the 2015 Il Poggione’s fruit nearly masks its structural core. The finish is long yet fresh, with classic, fine tannins, dried red fruits and pretty inner floral tones lingering throughout this perfectly balanced expression. The 2015 s pure class and built for the cellar." Vinous

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

Through the strictest selection, almost 50% of the normal grape quantity was vinified for the 2014 edition of Brunello. In the nose tempting fruity notes, spices, leather and a pinch of tobacco. Beautiful texture and a fine acidity lead this as always great Brunello in a long, fresh finish. Generous and already very accessible today. SUPERIORE.DE

"Slightly nutty and tobaccoy scent of more red than black berries with a hint of iodine and iron as well as spicy and clearly floral nuances. Firmly worked, tart, juicy, ripe fruit with herbaceous, nutty and slightly spicy aromas, some bite, fine sandy, youthful tannin, persistent on the palate, a hint of paprika powder and laurel, quite complex, good depth, moderate wood, very good, again multi-layered finish."Marcus Hofschuster

"Sparkling ruby with a garnet shimmer. Attractive and fragrant nose, fine cloves, cherries and roses. Juicy and round on the palate, shows fine cherry, grippy, present tannin, hearty." Falstaff

"The Fuligni 2014 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautiful wine. To my mind, it represents one of the best interpretations you will find from this difficult vintage that caused so much unease. The Fuligni family shows a deft hand, resulting in a wine that offers more balance, intensity and depth than a good majority of its peers. It opens to a compact and streamlined style, but it follows through with an articulate set of aromas including cassis, red rose, camphor ash and aniseed. The mouthfeel is thin in texture but lengthy in flavor and freshness. This is a very traditional expression of Sangiovese in heart and soul." Robert Parker

"The grapes for this Brunello come from Fuligni's oldest vines which typically go into the Riserva. In 2014, harvest was pushed back until mid-October in order to achieve full ripeness. The wine spent the first four to five months in small 5hl barrels to stabilise the colour, with the remaining time spent in traditional large botti. It opens with iron and savoury spice before revealing leather and tobacco leaf notes. There's definitely some flesh to pad out the structure in this well-balanced example, with smoky incense notes on the finish." Decanter

"Some smoky notes with savory and sanguine aromas, as well as deeply spicy red cherries. The palate delivers an impressively concentrated core of red-cherry and red-plum flavor. The tannins are succulent and the depth is good for this vintage." James Suckling

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2014

In the Bouquet beautiful primary fruits like cherry and blackberry, as well as cinnamon, spices and a smoky note. Very rich and complex on the palate, fleshy, with hints of dried spices and smoked ham. A persistent wine with beautiful depth and length, which already today gives a lot of pleasure. SUPERIORE.DE

"Deep ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of ripe dark cherry and spicy underbrush. Remarkably big and round, exuding notes of coffee, tobacco, ripe, sweet dark cherry and herbs; very enjoyable and very ripe, with greater definition and precision than many 2014 Brunellos from the southern reaches of the denomination." Antonio Galloni

"Dry-wood and floral aromas with a wealth of red cherries. On the palate there’s a smooth array of bright red berries, delivered on nutty, supple and even-paced tannins." James Suckling

"The Uccelliera 2014 Brunello di Montalcino exhibits the elegant and delicate side of this mighty Tuscan appellation. This vintage is characterized by mid-weight wines that are thinner in structure and less impactful in terms of overall intensity. However, there is a good argument to make that this softer approach is especially well-suited to a wine like Brunello that is never shy in terms of power. The vintage conditions in 2014 hold the wine back just a tad, and that restraint is welcome. From one of my absolute favorite Brunello producers, this wine is elegant and fine with bright fruit tones followed by sour cherry, licorice and dried rose bud." Robert Parker

Brunello di Montalcino “Poggio alle Mura” DOCG 2012

Of great substance and seductive softness, balance and fruitiness, Poggio alle Mura 2012 shows its best side. Ruby with violet reflections, the fragrance elegant, concentrated and bodily. Great potential for maturity. SUPERIORE.DE

"Fresh berry bouquet, sandalwood and leather notes; supple attack, pithy, tannins and acidity well balanced, solid fruit finish, slightly woodsy. Vinum

"Maturing ruby with bricky rim. Big nose with hints of fruit cake and minerals. Sweet palate tightly packed with tannins. The rich fruit closes up on the finish, and the tannins take centre ground at the moment." Jancis Robinson

"Plummy aromas mix in the glass with whiffs of pressed blue flower, vanilla and mocha. The taut structured palate offers dried black cherry, coconut, licorice, espresso and black pepper while firm fine-grained tannins provide the framework. A note of pipe tobacco closes the tight finish. Give it a few more years to unwind and fully develop." Wine Enthusiast

"A dense, burly style, displaying cherry, iron, leather, earth, tobacco and spice flavors. Unyielding and compact now, yet also complex and long." Wine Spectator

"Very ripe and dense with lots of dried-fruit, spice and cedar character. Some cigar box, too. Full-bodied, velvety and rich. Powerful. Give it two to three years of bottle age." James Suckling

"Bright and generous, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Poggio alle Mura opens to a darkly concentrated appearance and bold aromatic intensity. The wine is forthcoming and immediate in appeal. The bouquet is redolent of blackberry, cherry confit, exotic spice, cola and dark chewing tobacco. The mouthfeel shows a higher degree of tannic astringency, however that may come from the oak. Poggio alle Mura sees up to 80% aged in barrique for two years and the rest in botte grand. I'd suggest giving it a few more years to let that firmness subside and soften." Robert Parker

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015

Medium bright, shiny ruby red. Juicy dark cherries, rose petals, spicy herbs, mint and wild flowers. A wine with depth, silky tannins and a round, smooth finish that will delight lovers of fruity Brunello. The 2015 edition is a prime example of harmony and expression, very successful! SUPERIORE.DE

"Shiny, rich ruby garnet. Intense and dense nose with aromas of ripe raspberries, some liquorice and plums. Shows fine tannin with a firm bite, fine fruit, in the final firm pressure, clear and straightforward. Falstaff

"A more delicate style than many 2015s, this displays cherry, strawberry, mineral and tobacco flavors. Builds in weight as the solid matrix of tannins asserts itself on the lively finish. Best from 2022 through 2038." Wine Spectator

"Recognized by its red shield-shaped label, the Poggio San Polo 2015 Brunello di Montalcino is a dark and nicely concentrated expression of Sangiovese. This wine shows proverbial meat on its bones with rich cherry and cassis, backed by cola, potting soil and balsam wood. The bouquet grows in intensity as the wine warms in the glass. The tannins are well integrated within the depth and length of the mouthfeel. Give this Brunello a few more years to flesh out and soften." Robert Parker

"The ripe red fruit here is so expressive and floral, featuring dried rose petals, hibiscus, poppies, dried strawberries and raspberries. It falls inwards on the palate, compressed and captivating, gathering rough-edged strands of tannins as it goes, threading them through an iron-fisted, central core of flavor and texture. Drink from 2025." James Suckling

"Wild berry, camphor, tobacco and cocoa aromas fill the glass. Smooth, juicy and delicious, the full-bodied palate delivers ripe black cherry, raspberry compote and licorice while firm fine-grained tannins offer support. Fresh acidity keeps it balanced." Wine Enthusiast

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Radiant ruby, vibrant aromas of dark cherries, black berries, cocoa and leather. Fruity, juicy and bright at the base, dense and with a solid backbone of acidity and tannin. Then powerful dark fruit aromas, complexity and an immense length. A brilliant Brunello. SUPERIORE.DE

"So much crushed dark fruit such as raspberries and blueberries. Hints of sandalwood, too. Full-bodied, chewy and powerful with ripe tannins and a flavorful finish. Just a hint of lemon rind." James Suckling

"Dark and deep in appearance, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino bears many of the hallmark characteristics of the vintage. Sangiovese produced smaller berries and thicker color extraction in this vintage. This Brunello does indeed show more muscle and brawn, but it does so with an impeccable sense of balance and persistence. I cannot but admire this achievement. The quality of fruit is succulent and rich, and there are many pretty aromas of dark cherry, pressed blackberry, underbrush, cola and licorice to earn your admiration. Its textural fortitude is equally admirable." Robert Parker

"Medium, ripening red; inviting fruit, multi-layered; round and fine, fruity deep, some caramel, delicate tannin, long." Merum (JLF)

"Sparkling, clear ruby garnet. Opened with notes of saffron and liquorice, then lots of cherry, some pomegranate. Fine-meshed tannin on the palate, spreads well, much ripe fruit, smooth and long, salty." Falstaff

"Wow. I love the texture and beauty of this young Brunello. Medium to full body with a dense and tightly compacted palate. Dried cherry light cedar and chocolate. It goes on for minutes. Gorgeous now. Excellent acid fruit balance, but will improve with age." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with narrow orange rim. Spicy nose that is not showing a lot of fruit (yet). Generous, long palate that is already accessible." Jancis Robinson

"The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino is a beautifully finessed and elegant wine. It offers a very pleasing sense of balance in which no one characteristic overpowers the next. A dark ruby appearance gives the wine an open and inviting personality. The bouquet produces a subtle medley of wild berry, blueberry, underbrush and toasted almond aromas. The mouthfeel is lean, but it also shows polished and silky persistence. If you don't have the patience to wait, it tastes great even at this early stage." Robert Parker

"Dark spice, ripe berry, forest floor, Mediterranean brush and new leather aromas lead the nose on this powerfully structured wine. On the full-bodied palate, baking spice, licorice and pipe tobacco notes accent a juicy black cherry core while firm, velvety tannins provide the framework." Wine Enthusiast

Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2015 (BIO)

Impressive once again the Brunello from the almost unknown and now certified organic winery La Serena. In the bouquet fine layers of cassis, balsamic herbs and a hint of tobacco. On the palate it is full of pressure and primary fruit, fleshy and with excellently integrated tannins, which will provide increasing elegance as the wine matures in the bottle. A harmonious and well composed red wine from A to Z with exciting ageing potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"La Serena's 2015 Brunello di Montalcino shows dusty florals up front, mingling with dried cherries, mint leaf, cedar box, and white smoke, as hints of undergrowth and animal musk develope in the glass. On the palate, I'm finding a soft, silky expression, showing earthy red berry tones amidst nervous acidity, adding sweetness and saturating minerality, as grippy tannins drench the senses. The finish is long, structured, and spicy, displaying a hint of orange citrus over a layer of fine tannin and inner earth tones, with cheek-puckering acids linger on. The 2015 is a powerful wine built on a core of primary fruit and acid, yet with enough tannic clout to find beautiful balance over time." Vinous

"Enticing aromas and flavors of cherry, plum, earth, iron and blood mark this smooth, harmonious Brunello. Rich and dense, with chalky tannins. This will need some time to integrate fully." Wine Spectator

    • Brunello di Montalcino "Vallocchio" DOCG 2015

Brunello di Montalcino “Vallocchio” DOCG 2015

Royal is this powerful and long-lasting Brunello from the great vintage 2015, using only the best grapes from our own vineyards for this selection. It perfectly embodies the powerful elegance of the great Tuscan red wines. Ruby red, with a space-filling bouquet. One tastes the dense dark berry fruit, roast and tobacco aromas accompany the lingering finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Warm, quite deep scent of preserved red and black berries with slightly toasted and cedar wood notes, plum notes, a little tobacco, liquorice and spicy aromas. Firm, very juicy, ripe fruit, slightly smoky and cedar wood spice, some acid bite and present, yet very fine tannin, tar and tobacco on the palate, ethereal notes, salt in the background, a lot of power, but well-integrated alcohol, a touch of ice confectionery, plus dried herbs, very good, firm, juicy finish". Wein-Plus

"Intense, dark ruby red. Delicate spiciness on the nose of smoke and pepper, light undergrowth, truffle, liquorice. On the palate very polished with tight tannin, powerful, shows ripe fruit nuances." Falstaff

"A broad, powerful version, featuring black cherry, plum, tar, iron and underbrush flavors that mingle with the thick, pointed tannins. Ripe fruit occupies the center, offsetting the muscular structure, while the finish lingers, picking up a salty element." Wine Spectator

"The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Vallocchio shows depth and a more sophisticated approach with ample textural richness and more evident spice and smoke from its oak aging. However, the style fundamentally embraces the same lithe and lifted elegance that we saw in Fanti's classic Brunello. The color saturation of the Vallocchio is a degree or two darker, and the bouquet reveals dark cherry, tilled earth, cola and smoked cedar wood. Give the wine a few more years in your cellar to flesh out." Robert Parker

"What a nose of dried meat, tar, tobacco, dried boysenberries, red licorice and baking spices. Hearty tannins surround the full-bodied palate from every side, wringing bursting acidity from a full-throttle core of ripe, chewy fruit. The power and intensity are undeniable, but as you seep in the rich dried spices and died meat on the finish, you catch a glimpse of crystalline acidity through the looking glass." James Suckling

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

A wonderful Brunello di Montalcino with a generous bouquet of red berries, cherries and spices that contrast perfectly. Slim and firm with ethereal hints on the palate, the harmonious taste with great finesse goes towards a lingering finish. SUPERIORE.DE

"Riper style with dried berry character that turns to flowers. Full body, very fruity with tannins that are covered with plum and cherry flavors. A friendly and opulnet red." James Suckling

"Bright red with a pale rim. Pungently floral and spicy notes of cardamom and rose complicate red cherry aromas and flavors. Boasts a steely backbone and a very fresh, piercing personality. The long, very flinty finish showcases an enticing rising quality with aeration." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Sweet plum and cherry flavors course through this round, fleshy red, with supporting roles from earth, spice and tobacco notes. Balanced yet firm enough, with excellent freshness on the long finish." Wine Spectator

    • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2013

In the fragrance black cherries, light spicy notes, some vanilla. Full body, fresh fruit, flattering texture and a clean, silky finish on the palate. Long lasting. SUPERIORE.DE

"Medium intense, warm red; deep fruity notes, berry jam; powerful, dense, fine astringent tannin." Merum

"Bright, bright garnet red. Charming, inviting nose, smells of rose petals, pomegranate and raspberries, interwoven. On the palate it shows a polished, much fine-meshed tannin, spreads for a long time, ripe fruit, in the finale light bitter note." Falstaff

"This wine initially comes off as more somber, brooding and dark in personalty. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcino takes a few moments in the glass before its starts to relax and grow in volume and context. Before long, opulent tones of black fruit, spice and pipe tobacco. The wine is elegantly tempered and finessed on the close." Robert Parker

"Bright red. The fresh, clean, perfumed nose hints at red cherry and blood orange. Then sweet and supple on the palate, but with a lively mouthfeel to the red fruit and underbrush flavors thanks to harmonious, vibrant acidity. Has much more midpalate flesh to support its acidity than some other less successful 2013 Brunellos, all of which are made in a similar high-acid style typical of the vintage. Finishes broad, savory and nicely persistent. This 2013 from Ciacci Piccolomini is made in a much cooler-climate style than is usual for this producer." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)

"Exuding cherry, strawberry, floral and tobacco aromas and flavors, this effusive, fruity style is bright and elegant, with terrific harmony and a long, mouthwatering finish that leaves a mineral impression. Very compelling." Wine Spectator

"Aromas of light coffee, plum and cherry follow through to a full body with a wealth of dried fruit and hints of figs." James Suckling

"Underbrush, tobacco, ripe berry and balsamic aromas abound in this delicious red. Smooth, full-bodied and savory, the succulent palate doles out Marasca cherry, raspberry compote, licorice and white pepper. It's well balanced, with firm yet refined tannins and fresh acidity." • Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

      Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012

Brunello 2012 by Mastrojanni seduces with beautiful charisma, intensity and finesse. Characterful bouquet of sweet cherries, Mediterranean herbs, smoke and tobacco. The splendid fruit and the tightly woven tannins are carried by a light acidity. Very good storage potential. SUPERIORE.DE

"A multi-facetted nose of plums, leather and tobacco; juicy in the mouth, the acidity perceptible, the tannin well integrated, racy and powerful, without forgetting the finesse." Vinum

"A very typical Brunello with berry and tobacco character plus hints of cedar. Full-bodied, chewy and tannic. Needs time to soften and come together. Savory wine." James Suckling

"Mid ruby with bright bricky rim. Open, red-fruit nose and solid fruit palate. Grainy tannins that are a little demanding right now. Building up in complexity on the finish." Jancis Robinson

"Beautifully saturated and dark, the 2012 Brunello di Montalcino offers a distinctively sophisticated personality. There's an air of nobility that is natural to Brunello, but that comes in limited supply in this warm vintage. You definitely get it here. The wine's bouquet offers a compelling medley of dark fruit tones that shift into savory spicy and balsam herb. Those automatic transitions are smooth and seamless. Another nice quality of the wine is that no one element overpowers or overshadows the other. It offers a great sense of balance. This wine has many cards to play and I am confident it will play them well over the next ten years of its evolution." Robert Parker

"Luminous red. Highly complex nose offers aromas of red cherry, raspberry, flint and violet, plus a touch of beef bouillon; this is a candidate for the most complex nose of the vintage. Then textbook Sangiovese flavors of flinty red cherries, licorice and minerals. Long and clean on the perfumed, highly mineral finish." Ian d’Agata (vinous.com)
