Montalcino is not a homogeneous terroir – it is a mosaic of microclimates, altitudes and soil formations that produces completely different interpretations of Sangiovese in a very small area. San Polo is located in the south-east, on the hill of Podernovi, where the extinct volcano Monte Amiata shields the vineyards from the hot Scirocco winds and has left behind pyroclastic deposits that give the Sangiovese a mineral signature that few other sites possess. At 450 metres above sea level, the estate belongs to the cooler zones of the appellation – large temperature amplitudes between day and night promote flavour and acidity structure, while the dryness of the summer concentrates the berries without stressing them.
The basic Brunello combines grapes from the historic core vineyards of the estate: vineyards that were planted between 1990 and 2000 and have now reached the maturity that makes great Sangiovese possible. The vinification follows the principle of restraint: fermentation in cement, malolactic fermentation and thirty months of ageing in large oak barrels of 1,000 to 4,000 Liters– vessels that give the wine oxygen without overpowering it with wood flavours. A further six months of bottle ageing complete the integration.
Bright ruby red in colour with garnet reflections, amarena cherry and raspberry on the nose, underpinned by hibiscus blossom and a hint of tobacco. The elegance that San Polo stands for unfolds on the palate: present but never coarse tannins, lively acidity and a depth that tells of the terroir, not the cellar. A Brunello from a very good vintage that shows what this south-east flank has to offer – and which still whets the appetite for the single vineyards that are yet to come. SUPERIORE.DE
"The 2021 Brunello di Montalcino from organic farming opens with a generous and complete bouquet that highlights dark fruits, spices, blue flowers, grilled herbs and a hint of freshly picked white pepper. It aptly expresses the Sangiovese and the nuances of the vintage. After fermentation in cement and 30 months of ageing in oak barrels, the wine gains clarity and precision without excessive oak influence. On the palate, it is powerful, with a lot of vigour in the mid-palate, with chalky tannins and a dry finish carried by a bright freshness. The fruit comes from the Vigneti San Polo with south-eastern and south-western exposures on limestone and clay soils." Wine Advocate
"Plums, red berries, cherries and cedar on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied with fine, creamy, velvet tannins and a long and flavorful finish. A rich wine that shows energy and focus. From organically grown grapes. Needs two or three yeas to come together, but it’s already very juicy and savory." James Suckling
