When a woman who brought Valpolicella wines to the world as "Lady Amarone" acquires a vineyard in Montalcino in 2007, it is not to repeat the tried and tested, but to break new ground – but to break new ground. Marilisa Allegrini, the first Italian woman on the cover of Wine Spectator and named "Cavaliere del Lavoro" in 2020, now runs San Polo together with her daughters Carlotta and Caterina. The estate is located on the south-eastern flank of the hill, in Podernovi, at an altitude of around 450 metres – where the extinct volcano Monte Amiata protects the vineyards from hot winds and has left behind pyroclastic soils that give the Sangiovese an unmistakable mineral signature.
San Polo was the first Tuscan winery with CasaClima certification: the underground cellar utilises natural ventilation, spring water and solar energy – organic architecture as a built philosophy. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2017 and the work follows the principles of regenerative agriculture. The Rosso di Montalcino comes from the Vigna Rossa and Vigna d'Oriente vineyards, is fermented in cement and matures for twelve months in large oak barrels. It has a bright ruby red colour in the glass, fresh wild berries and sour cherries on the nose and a juiciness on the palate that celebrates the Sangiovese without overpowering it. Not a simple prelude to Brunello, but a wine with its own voice. SUPERIORE.DE
"Bright ruby red colour. Very fresh on the nose, notes of light red fruit such as sour cherry and raspberry, also slightly spicy with cedar wood and hints of tobacco. Balanced on the palate, very juicy. Medium-bodied with soft tannins." Falstaff
"The nose has an umami feel like early fall, as sour cherries and wild strawberries gleam above anchoring aromas of damp earth, herbs and low tide. On the palate, raspberries and orange peel bring out the texture of the strawberries, above that enduring umami anchor. Taut tannins keep lively acid in check." Wine Enthusiast
